The experimental characterization of particle dynamics in fluidized beds is of great importance in fostering an understanding of solid phase motion and its effect on particle properties in granulation processes.Commonly used techniques such as particle image velocimetry rely on the cross-correlation of illumination intensity and averaging procedures. It is not possible to obtain single particle velocities with such techniques. Moreover, the estimated velocities may not accurately represent the local particle velocities in regions with high velocity gradients.Consequently, there is a need for devices and methods that are capable of acquiring individual particle velocities. This paper describes how particle tracking velocimetry can be adapted to dense particulate flows. The approach presented in this paper couples high-speed imaging with an innovative segmentation algorithm for particle detection, and employs the Voronoi method to solve the assignment problem usually encountered in densely seeded flows.Lagrangian particle tracks are obtained as primary information, and these serve as the basis for calculating sophisticated quantities such as the solid-phase flow field, granular temperature, and solid volume fraction. We show that the consistency of individual trajectories is sufficient to recognize collision events.  相似文献

With a concise review on some basic and novel algorithms and methods for the techniques of particle-imaging velocimetry (PIV), the paper reports an application of the PIV techniques to the investigation of particle motion in a gas–solid two-phase spiral flow in a horizontal tube. Axial velocities of the transported particles are obtained. Some important features of particle motion governing high transportation efficiency of the spiral flow are revealed by investigating probability density distribution of particle locations in a pipe cross-section.  相似文献

Digital particle image velocimetry   总被引:51,自引:13,他引:51
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is the digital counterpart of conventional laser speckle velocitmetry (LSV) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques. In this novel, two-dimensional technique, digitally recorded video images are analyzed computationally, removing both the photographic and opto-mechanical processing steps inherent to PIV and LSV. The directional ambiguity generally associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images. The images are recorded at video rate (30 Hz or slower) which currently limits the application of the technique to low speed flows until digital, high resolution video systems with higher framing rates become more economically feasible. Sequential imaging makes it possible to study unsteady phenomena like the temporal evolution of a vortex ring described in this paper. The spatial velocity measurements are compared with data obtained by direct measurement of the separation of individual particle pairs. Recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.  相似文献

Particle fluctuation and gas turbulence in dense gas-particle flows are less studied due to complexity of the phenomena. In the present study, simulations of gas turbulent flows passing over a single particle are carried out first by using RANS modeling with a Reynolds stress equation turbulence model and sufficiently fine grids, and then by using LES. The turbulence enhancement by the particle wake effect is studied under various particle sizes and relative gas velocities, and the turbulence enhancement is found proportional to the particle diameter and the square of velocity. Based on the above results, a turbulence enhancement model for the particle-wake effect is proposed and is incorporated as a sub-model into a comprehensive two-phase flow model, which is then used to simulate dilute gas-particle flows in a horizontal channel. The simulation results show that the predicted gas turbulence by using the present model accounting for the particle wake effect is obviously in better agreement with the experimental results than the prediction given by the model not accounting for the wake effect. Finally, the proposed model is incorporated into another two-phase flow model to simulate dense gasparticle flows in a downer. The results show that the particle wake effect not only enhances the gas turbulence, but also amplifies the particle fluctuation.  相似文献

In vivo whole-field blood velocity measurement techniques   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:3
In this article a number of whole-field blood velocity measurement techniques are concisely reviewed. We primarily focus on optical measurement techniques for in vivo applications, such as laser Doppler velocimetry (including time varying speckle), laser speckle contrast imaging and particle image velocimetry (including particle tracking). We also briefly describe nuclear magnetic resonance and ultrasound particle image velocimetry, two techniques that do not rely on optical access, but that are of importance to in vivo whole-field blood velocity measurement. Typical applications for whole-field methods are perfusion monitoring, the investigation of instantaneous blood flow patterns, the derivation of endothelial shear stress distributions from velocity fields, and the measurement of blood volume flow rates. These applications require individual treatment in terms of spatial and temporal resolution and number of measured velocity components. The requirements further differ for the investigation of macro-, meso-, and microscale blood flows. In this review we describe and classify those requirements and present techniques that satisfy them.  相似文献

Volumetric-correlation particle image velocimetry (VPIV) is a new technique that provides a 3-dimensional 2-component velocity field from a single image plane. This single camera technique is simpler and cheaper to implement than multi-camera systems and has the capacity to measure time-varying flows. Additionally, this technique has significant advantages over other 3D PIV velocity measurement techniques, most notably in the capacity to measure highly seeded flows. Highly seeded flows, often unavoidable in industrial and biological flows, offer considerable advantages due to higher information density and better overall signal-to-noise ratio allowing for optimal spatial and temporal resolution. Here, we further develop VPIV adding the capability to measure concentration and increasing the robustness and accuracy of the technique. Particle concentrations are calculated using volumetric auto-correlations, and subsequently the velocities are calculated using volumetric cross-correlation corrected for variations in particle concentration. Along with the ability to calculate the particle concentration profile, our enhanced VPIV produces significant improvement in the accuracy of velocity measurements. Furthermore, this technique has been demonstrated to be insensitive to out-of-plane flows. The velocity measurement accuracy of the enhanced VPIV exceeds that of standard micro-PIV measurements, especially in near-wall regions. The 3D velocity and particle-concentration measurement capability of VPIV are demonstrated using both synthetic and experimental results.  相似文献

In this work, structural finite element analyses of particles moving and interacting within high speed compressible flow are directly coupled to computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer analyses to provide more detailed and improved simulations of particle laden flow under these operating conditions. For a given solid material model, stresses and displacements throughout the solid body are determined with the particle–particle contact following an element to element local spring force model and local fluid induced forces directly calculated from the finite volume flow solution. Plasticity and particle deformation common in such a flow regime can be incorporated in a more rigorous manner than typical discrete element models where structural conditions are not directly modeled. Using the developed techniques, simulations of normal collisions between two 1 mm radius particles with initial particle velocities of 50–150 m/s are conducted with different levels of pressure driven gas flow moving normal to the initial particle motion for elastic and elastic–plastic with strain hardening based solid material models. In this manner, the relationships between the collision velocity, the material behavior models, and the fluid flow and the particle motion and deformation can be investigated. The elastic–plastic material behavior results in post collision velocities 16–50% of their pre-collision values while the elastic-based particle collisions nearly regained their initial velocity upon rebound. The elastic–plastic material models produce contact forces less than half of those for elastic collisions, longer contact times, and greater particle deformation. Fluid flow forces affect the particle motion even at high collision speeds regardless of the solid material behavior model. With the elastic models, the collision force varied little with the strength of the gas flow driver. For the elastic–plastic models, the larger particle deformation and the resulting increasingly asymmetric loading lead to growing differences in the collision force magnitudes and directions as the gas flow strength increased. The coupled finite volume flow and finite element structural analyses provide a capability to capture the interdependencies between the interaction of the particles, the particle deformation, the fluid flow and the particle motion.  相似文献

Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) data processing has been developed to the point where DPIV image data are processed via auto- or cross-correlation techniques in near real time and the results are displayed on screen as they are processed. Correlation techniques are highly desirable, since they provide velocity measurements on a regular grid, which are readily comparable to CFD predictions of the flow field. In high-speed flows, particle lag effects are always of concern; however, the correlation operation does not provide any means for minimization or elimination of systematic errors in the recorded particle image data. In this paper, we present a combined correlation processing/particle tracking technique providing “super-resolution” velocity measurements. Fuzzy-logic principles are employed to maximize the information recovery in the correlation operation and to determine the correct particle pairings in the tracking operation. The combined correlation/particle tracking technique is applied to DPIV data obtained in the diffuser region of a high-speed centrifugal compressor producing velocity vector maps with an average density of 6 vectors/mm2. Inspection of the particle tracking results revealed large particles that were not following the flow. Using preknowledge of the flow field, the biased velocity estimates arising from large particles in the flow were removed, thereby improving the accuracy of the measurements. In applying a video-based particle image velocimetry (PTV) system in a complex fluid flow, it is common to find both regions of fast and slow moving flow intermixing-particularly in highly turbulent or reversing flows. When one attempts to track the movement of particles in such a flow with a wide velocity range (and hence, separation distance between particle images), resolution problems are encountered. Inability to cover a wide range of velocities is actually a limitation of PTV. A method is introduced here that extends the dynamic range of PTV when implemented on a video-based system. It combines the use of multiple frames and multiple exposures on a single frame. The method is subsequently verified by tracking dots painted on a spinning flat disc.  相似文献

Free-surface flows of concentrated suspensions exhibit many interesting phenomena such as particle segregation and surface corrugation. In this work the flow structures associated with free-surface has been studied experimentally. The free-surface velocity for neutrally buoyant suspension of uniform spheres in a gravity driven inclined channel flow was determined by particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) technique. Experiments were carried out for concentrated suspensions with particle fractions ? ranging from 0.40 to 0.50. The measured velocities show blunted profile in the channel. The blunting of the velocity profile increases with the particle concentration. The rms velocity fluctuations measured at the free-surface progressively increase with particle fraction ? and are linear in shear rate γ. The surface roughness were characterized by analyzing the power spectral density of the refracted light from the free-surface. The characteristics observed are in support of earlier findings.  相似文献

A new algorithm using polar coordinate system similarity (PCSS) for tracking particle in particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) is proposed. The essence of the algorithm is to consider simultaneously the changes of the distance and angle of surrounding particles relative to the object particle. Monte Carlo simulations of a solid body rotational flow and a parallel shearing flow are used to investigate flows measurable by PCSS and the influences of experimental parameters on the implementation of the new algorithm. The results indicate that the PCSS algorithm can be applied to flows subjected to strong rotation and is not sensitive to experimental parameters in comparison with the conventional binary image cross-correlation (BICC) algorithm. Finally, PCSS is applied to images of a real experiment. The project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (50206019) The English text was polished by Yunming Chen.  相似文献

The particle image velocimetry technique was used to measure characteristics of a turbulent flow over a transitionally-rough fixed bed in an open-channel flow. These conditions are typical of flows encountered in sediment transport problems. Measurements obtained with this technique were used to investigate the distributions of velocities, turbulence intensities, Reynolds stress, and third- and fourth-order moments in a region above y + = 10. The present results are in good agreement to those previously obtained on smooth walls and provide further evidence that PIV can be applied successfully to investigate turbulence in open-channel flows over a rough bed.  相似文献

The behavior of particles impacting the surface of a charged droplet involves adhesion, rebound, and submersion. In the present study, a numerical model for simulating particle impacts on charged droplets is presented that takes into account the various impact modes. With the droplet considered as a solid boundary, the criterion for rebounding is that the particle’s impact angle is <85°. The simulated trajectories of the particles are verified by comparing with experimental data for low-velocity particles to assess the reliability of the model. For impact angles >85°, particles undergo three distinct modes depending on normal impact velocities. The critical velocity of adhesion/rebound and rebound/submersion is used to identify the mode that the particles are undergoing. The criteria are also verified by comparing with analytical data. The results show that the impact angle of particles increases with increasing Coulomb number and decreases dramatically with increasing Stokes number, both of which lead to a high probability for particle rebound.  相似文献

Application of particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques for measurement of fluid velocities typically requires two steps. The first of these is the photography step in which one or more exposures of a particle field are taken. The second step is the evaluation of the particle pattern and production of appropriate velocities. Each of these steps involves optimization which is usually specific to the experiment being conducted and there is significant interaction between photographic parameters and evaluation characteristics.Among the various evaluation techniques suggested for analysis of PIV images is the evaluation of the scattered interference pattern (Young's fringes) by numerical Fourier transform. An alternative to the numerical calculation of the Fourier transform of the Young's fringes has been suggested, using a modified liquid crystal television as an optical correlator to allow the transform to be performed optically. Both transform techniques are affected by the quality of the input function, specifically the Young's fringes. This paper will compare the performance of optical and numerical Fourier transform analysis of Young's fringes using speckle images. The repeatability and an estimate of the accuracy of the particle displacement will be shown for each method. A brief examination of the effects of small particle number density of PIV evaluation will also be presented. Finally, for a small part of an actual unsteady flow, the optical and numerical Fourier transform analysis methods will be compared.  相似文献

A two-frequency dual-plane stereo particle image velocimetry (DSPIV) technique is described for highly resolved measurements of the complete nine-component velocity gradient tensor field ui/xj on the quasi-universal intermediate and small scales of turbulent flows. The method is based on two simultaneous, independent stereo particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements in two differentially spaced light sheet planes, with light sheet characterization measurements demonstrating the required sheet thicknesses, separation, and two-axis parallelism that determine the measurement resolution and accuracy. The present approach uses an asymmetric forward–forward scatter configuration with two different laser frequencies in conjunction with filters to separate the scattered light onto the individual stereo camera pairs, allowing solid metal oxide particles to be used as seed particles to permit measurements in nonreacting as well as exothermic reacting turbulent flows.  相似文献

Information regarding the flow properties in bubble columns with a three-phase flow is of great interest for research into its performance, as well as for the validation of computer models. In an earlier paper, we proposed an X-ray based particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), called XPTV. This method allows not only the measurement of the velocities of both solid and fluid phases in a three-phase flow, but also the assessment of the time-averaged local solid phase content. In this paper, we are concerned with the statistical significance of the obtained measurements.  相似文献

Measurements have been accomplished within the aqueous surface viscous sublayer of wind-forced microscale breaking waves using particle image velocimetry. These measurements have been used to derive surface velocities and tangential stresses. Assessment is made of the performance of the experimental equipment and techniques developed to accomplish these measurements. Comparison is made with previous studies of viscous sublayer behaviour at the air–water interface and at smooth solid surfaces. Received: 7 June 1996/Accepted: 30 April 1997  相似文献

An experimental study of particle velocities in micro-abrasive jets by using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique is presented. It has been found that the particle jet flow has a nearly linear expansion downstream. The particle velocities increase with air pressure, and the increasing rate increases with nozzle diameter within the range considered. The instantaneous velocity profile of the particle flow field in terms of the particle velocity distribution along the axial and radial directions of the jets is discussed. For the axial profile in the jet centerline downstream, there exists an extended acceleration stage, a transition stage, and a deceleration stage. For the radial velocity profiles, a relatively flat shape is observed at a jet cross-section near the nozzle exit. Mathematical models for the particle velocities in the air jet are then developed. It is shown that the results from the models agree well with experimental data in both the variation trend and magnitude.  相似文献
