The fully digital evaluation of photographic PIV recordings   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The performance of a purely digital evaluation system for photographic PIV recordings is described. High resolution digital images are obtained from the 35 mm negatives using a commonly available slide scanner. Together with the continually improving capabilities of standard computers, this evaluation system is a cost effective alternative to the traditional analog optical/digital (Young's fringe method) and purely optical PIV interrogation systems. Compared to the optical systems the fully digital evaluation can provide a higher spatial resolution while maintaining a similar measurement uncertainty. Using actual PIV recordings absolute measurement uncertainties are obtained and further predictions toward optimal displacement data recovery are made with the aid of Monte-Carlo simulations. Measurement uncertainties are minimized for particle image diameters on the order of 2 pixels while the reduction of the image depth (i.e. bits/pixel) has little effect. The overall performance of the described digital evaluation is compared to two types of optical evaluation systems.Affiliated with DNW-NWB, DLR-Braunschweig.  相似文献

A phase discrimination method for two-phase PIV is presented that is capable of simultaneously separating the two phases from time-resolved stereoscopic PIV images taken in a particle-laden jet. The technique developed expands on previous work done by Khalitov and Longmire (Exp Fluids 32:252–268, 2002), where by means of image processing techniques, a raw two-phase PIV image can be separated into two single-phase images according to particle size and intensity distributions. The technique is expanded through the use of three new image processing algorithms to separate particles of similar size (up to an order of magnitude better than published work) for fields of view much larger than previously considered. It also addresses the known problem of noisy background images produced by high-speed CMOS cameras, which makes the particle detection and separation from the noisy background difficult, through the use of a novel fast Fourier transform background filter.  相似文献

In this paper digital processing techniques for PIV (Partical Image Velocimetry) using double-exposed particle images have been studied. It has been found that a pattern matching technique is significantly superior to the traditional autocorrelation method in the case that a large particle displacement between the double exposures is present on the image. In PIV using double-exposed images, the image shifting technique is usually used to solve the directional ambiguity problem. The performance of PIV using autocorrelation technique is dependent on the flow speed and the amount of image shift applied. This dependence, for example, causes a difficulty of autocorrelation in flows close to a solid boundary. The present study shows that a pattern matching technique eliminates such a difficulty. At the same signal-to-noise ratio, the pattern matching techndique has a better spatial resolution than that of autocorrelation. In concert with the pattern matching technique, PID (Particle Image Distortion) can be applied to double-exposed images, further improving the reliability and accuracy of velocity estimates of PIV in the presence of large velocity gradients. Generally speaking, PIP-matching and PID extend the validity of PIV using double-exposed images. The total processing time required by the PIV using the pattern matching technique and one PID iteration is of the same order as that required by the PIV using autocorrelation. This paper presents a PIV (particle image velocimetry) image processing method for measuring flow velocities around an arbitrarily moving body. This image processing technique uses a contour-texture analysis based on user-defined textons to determine the arbitrarily moving interface in the particle images. After the interface tracking procedure is performed, the particle images near the interface are transformed into Cartesian coordinates that are related to the distance from the interface. This transformed image always has a straight interface, so the interrogation windows can easily be arranged at certain distances from the interface. Accurate measurements near the interface can then be achieved by applying the window deformation algorithm in concert with PIV/IG (interface gradiometry). The displacement of each window is evaluated by using the window deformation algorithm and was found to result in acceptable errors except for the border windows. Quantitative evaluations of this method were performed by applying it to computer-generated images and actual PIV measurements.  相似文献

A sophisticated strategy for the evaluation of time-resolved PIV image sequences is presented which takes the temporal variation of the particle image pattern into account. The primary aim of the method is to increase the accuracy and dynamic range by locally adopting the particle image displacement for each interrogation window to overcome the largest drawback of PIV. This is required in order to resolve flow phenomena which have so far remained inaccessible. The method locally optimizes the temporal separation between the particle image pairs by taking first and second order effects into account. The validation of the evaluation method is performed with synthetically generated particle image sequences based on the solution of a direct numerical simulation. In addition, the performance of the evaluation approach is demonstrated by means of a real image sequence measured with a time-resolved PIV system.  相似文献

Digital particle image velocimetry   总被引:51,自引:13,他引:51
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is the digital counterpart of conventional laser speckle velocitmetry (LSV) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques. In this novel, two-dimensional technique, digitally recorded video images are analyzed computationally, removing both the photographic and opto-mechanical processing steps inherent to PIV and LSV. The directional ambiguity generally associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images. The images are recorded at video rate (30 Hz or slower) which currently limits the application of the technique to low speed flows until digital, high resolution video systems with higher framing rates become more economically feasible. Sequential imaging makes it possible to study unsteady phenomena like the temporal evolution of a vortex ring described in this paper. The spatial velocity measurements are compared with data obtained by direct measurement of the separation of individual particle pairs. Recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.  相似文献

Because of the inherent small size of optical fiberscopes, they provide access and relative handling ease in given closed vessels, which are hardly equipped with extra windows for conventional flow visualization. The use of an optical fiberscope in conjunction with a conventional particle image velocimetry/particle tracking velocimetry (PIV/PTV) system without optimization can lead to degraded transmission of images. The present study proposes a processing technique to filter background noise contained within the coarse bundle image by subtracting the original image of the bundle as reference image. Additionally, efforts were made to increase the reliability of vector processing using particle streak images via judicious pulse interval and duration adjustments. As an applications test we measured classic jet flow using the developed system and using established conventional measurement techniques. Our tests confirmed that our fiberscope PTV system provides vector fields with sufficient accuracy.  相似文献

Limitation of fourier transform photoelasticity: Influence of isoclinics   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The application of the Fourier transform to photoelasticity was used in the evaluation of the retardation using a carrier system of fringes. In photoelasticity, the light intensity from the analyzer in a circular polariscope depends on both the retardation (isochromatics) and the isoclinic parameter. The theoretical analysis shows that the angle between the principal stresses in the model and in the carrier system of fringes influences the evaluation of the retardation (isochromatics), as occurs when misaligned compensators (namely, Babinet) are used. As a consequence, this method may not be applied as a full-field technique, although the error is small if the angle between the principal stresses in the model and in the carrier is less than 25 deg. Numerical simulations and experimental tests were conducted to corroborate this prediction.  相似文献

We examine the dynamics of a high-speed shock-induced flow near the open end of a shock tube using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) and the background oriented schlieren (BOS) methods along with two- and three-dimensional numerical simulations. In experiments, planar shock waves (\(M=1.3\)–1.6) are discharged from a rectangular (\(24\,\hbox {mm} \times 48\,\hbox {mm}\)) low-pressure section of a shock tube open to the atmosphere. Due to the rectangular exit geometry, the resulting flow is highly three-dimensional and, thus, more complicated, compared to well-studied circular/axisymmetric geometries. The study focuses on the spatio-temporal flow structure up to 1 ms after the shock wave diffraction. PIV and BOS visualization techniques share the same post-processing principle, and the iterative multi-step cross-correlation algorithm applied in the PIV software is adapted here for the calculation of background pattern displacement on the BOS images. Particular attention is given to the resolution of flow regions where sharp gradients are present, such as a diffracted shock front or embedded shocks. Computational fluid dynamic simulations of the problem are also conducted to validate the experimental results and methods and to gain more insight into the three-dimensional flow dynamics. PIV and BOS images are found to be consistent with the corresponding numerical flow visualizations.  相似文献

A kilohertz frame rate cinemagraphic particle image velocimetry (PIV) system has been developed for acquiring time-resolved image sequences of laboratory-scale gas and liquid-phase turbulent flows. Up to 8000 instantaneous PIV images per second are obtained, with sequence lengths exceeding 4000 images. The two-frame cross-correlation method employed precludes directional ambiguity and has a higher signal-to-noise ratio than single-frame autocorrelation or cross-correlation methods, facilitating acquisition of long uninterrupted sequences of valid PIV images. Low and high velocities can be measured simultaneously with similar accuracy by adaptively cross-correlating images with the appropriate time delay. Seed particle illumination is provided by two frequency-doubled Nd:YAG lasers producing Q-switched pulses at the camera frame rate. PIV images are acquired using a 16 mm high-speed rotating prism camera. Frame-to-frame registration is accomplished by imaging two pairs of crossed lines onto each frame and aligning the digitized image sequence to these markers using image processing algorithms. No flow disturbance is created by the markers because only their image is projected to the PIV imaging plane, with the physical projection device residing outside the flow field. The frame-to-frame alignment uncertainty contributes 2% to the overall velocity measurement uncertainty, which is otherwise comparable to similar film-based PIV methods. High-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV) is first used to measure two components of the fluctuating particle velocities for different particle sizes and solid mass flow rates at low air velocity in a horizontal pipe. Then, the continuous wavelet transform and orthogonal wavelet multi-resolution techniques are employed to analyze and decompose the fluctuating particle velocities to provide both quantitative and qualitative information on the particle fluctuation velocity of various frequencies. It is revealed that the fluctuating energy of axial particle velocity is mainly contributed from the wavelet components of low frequency, accounting for about 84%, near the bottom part of the pipe cross-section. However, the contribution to the fluctuating energy of vertical particle velocity accounts for about 82% from the wavelet components of high frequency. The auto-correlation analysis suggests a quasi-periodical large-scale axial particle fluctuating velocity. On the other hand, the spatial correlation analysis indicates that the low-frequency components of the axial particle velocity exhibit a large correlation near the bottom part of the pipe cross-section. From the probability density function (PDF) distribution, it is found that the low-frequency components of the axial particle velocity exhibit larger fluctuation, and this fluctuation reduces as the frequencies increase near the bottom part of the pipe cross-section. Near the top part of the pipe cross-section, however, a larger fluctuating axial particle velocity appears in the high-frequency range.  相似文献

In this communication, the Digital Image Compression (DIC) – PIV system is introduced. The present system allows the measurement of mean and RMS velocities in turbulent flow fields, using JPEG digital image compression technique for on-line recording of thousands of images. The decompression and subsequent analysis of the images, performed by means of digital cross-correlation technique, is carried out off-line. Errors incurred by the application of the compression method are assessed and discussed. The effect of the compression is firstly analysed by linearly traversing (synthetic) computer-generated PIV-images at constant velocity. Secondly, accurate LDA measurements and data from direct numerical simulation (DNS) are used as a basis for the analysis in a low Reynolds number open water channel flow. The results show that excellent agreement between LDA and DIC–PIV measurements for mean and RMS velocities can be achieved using a compression factor up to 12. The laser based interferometric Strain/Displacement Gage (ISDG) measures the in-plane surface deformation between two small reflecting surface markers. When illuminated with a coherent beam of light, the reflected beams from the two markers form an interference pattern, and monitoring the shift of the fringe pattern allows strain in the gage section of a specimen to be directly measured. A minimum on the fringe pattern can be isolated and tracked as the test proceeds, but this technique utilizes only a small part of the optical signal and often requires a complex programming scheme. This paper presents the application of Fourier transform and phase shifting techniques to the use of the ISDG during microsample tensile testing. The Fourier transform samples the entire fringe pattern and greatly improves the optical signal to noise ratio, and the phase shifting fringe pattern analysis has proven to be more robust and less affected by speckle or optical noise than fringe pattern minimum tracking. This results in the ability to measure larger deformations with a system resolution of ∼5 microstrain and an uncertainty of ±15.5 microstrain. An example involving the microsample tensile testing of a MEMS related LIGA Ni specimen is included to demonstrate the utility of these new techniques.  相似文献

Endoscopic PIV measurements in a low pressure turbine rig   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Particle-Image-Velocimetry (PIV) is a useful way to acquire information about the flow in turbomachinery. Several premises have to be fulfilled to achieve high-quality data, for example, optical access, low vibrations and low reflections. However, not all test facilities comply with these requirements. If there is no optical access to the test area, measurements cannot be performed. The use of borescopic optics is a possible solution to this issue, as the access required is very small. Several different techniques can be used to measure the three components of the velocity vector, one of which is Stereo-PIV. These techniques require either large optical access from several viewing angles or highly complex setups. Orthogonal light sheet orientations in combination with borescopic optics using Planar-PIV can deliver sufficient information about the flow. This study will show the feasibility of such an approach in an enclosed test area, such as the interblade space in a Low-Pressure-Turbine-Rig. The results from PIV will be compared with data collected with conventional techniques, such as the Five-Hole-Probe and the 2-component Hot-Wire-Anemometry. An analysis of time- and phase-averaged data will be performed.  相似文献

With a concise review on some basic and novel algorithms and methods for the techniques of particle-imaging velocimetry (PIV), the paper reports an application of the PIV techniques to the investigation of particle motion in a gas–solid two-phase spiral flow in a horizontal tube. Axial velocities of the transported particles are obtained. Some important features of particle motion governing high transportation efficiency of the spiral flow are revealed by investigating probability density distribution of particle locations in a pipe cross-section.  相似文献

In this paper the peak-locking phenomenon is investigated in the evaluation of digital PIV recordings by using a correlation-based interrogation algorithm with a discrete window shift and a correlation-based tracking algorithm. Statistical analyses indicate that nonuniformly distributed bias errors are the main cause of the peak-locking effect, and the amplitude variation of the random error is also an important source of the peak locking. Simulations and experimental examples demonstrate that very strong peak-locking effects exist for the correlation-based interrogation algorithm with discrete window shift in the cases of large particle images, small interrogation windows, and very small particle images. Very strong peak-locking effects are also observed for the correlation-based tracking algorithm when the particle images are overexposed, binarized, or very small. These strong peak-locking effects can be avoided without loss of evaluation accuracy by using a continuous window-shift technique in combination with the correlation-based interrogation algorithm. A new approach for simultaneous planar measurement of droplet velocity and size with gas phase velocities is reported, which combines the out-of-focus imaging technique ‘Interferometric Laser Imaging Droplet Sizing’ (ILIDS) for planar simultaneous droplet size and velocity measurements with the in-focus technique ‘Particle Image Velocimetry’ (PIV) for gas velocity measurements in the vicinity of individual droplets. Discrimination between the gas phase seeding and the droplets is achieved in the PIV images by removing the glare points of focused droplet images, using the droplet position obtained through ILIDS processing. Combination of the two optical arrangements can result in a discrepancy in the location of the centre of a droplet, when imaging through ILIDS and PIV techniques, of up to about 1 mm, which may lead to erroneous identification of the glare points from droplets on the PIV images. The magnitude of the discrepancy is a function of position of the droplet’s image on the CCD array and the degree of defocus, but almost independent of droplet size. Specifically, it varies approximately linearly across the image along the direction corresponding to the direction of propagation of the laser sheet for a given defocus setting in ILIDS. The experimental finding is supported by a theoretical analysis, which was based on geometrical optics for a simple optical configuration that replicates the essential features of the optical system. The discrepancy in the location was measured using a monodisperse droplet generator, and this was subtracted from the droplet centres identified in the ILIDS images of a polydisperse spray without ‘seeding’ particles. This reduced the discrepancy between PIV and ILIDS droplet centres from about 1 mm to about 0.1 mm and hence increased the probability of finding the corresponding fringe patterns on the ILIDS image and glare points on the PIV image. In conclusion, it is shown that the proposed combined method can discriminate between droplets and ‘seeding’ particles and is capable of two-phase measurements in polydisperse sprays.  相似文献
