Single point turbulence statistics measured directly above and in close proximity to the wall in a fully developed, fully rough, turbulent open channel flow are reported. In order to investigate the spatial inhomogeneity of the turbulence, the measurements were obtained over a matrix of measurement points in a plane parallel to the roughness-bed surface. The measurements were obtained with a three-component laser Doppler velocimeter (3D-LDV) system. The turbulence statistics associated with the vertical velocity component, including conditioned mean vertical velocities, rms distributions, and mean vertical momentum fluxes are emphasized. For the Reynolds and Froude numbers associated with this investigation, and with the specific roughness geometry employed in this study (a packed bed of uniform-diameter spheres), it is found that the distribution of the local mean vertical velocity, <w>, has non-zero contributions over the roughness pattern and that this contributes to a mean net vertical momentum flux into the roughness bed. However, the net vertical momentum flux due to turbulent fluctuations is positive out of the bed, consistent with smooth-wall behavior. These results are relevant to the study of sediment entrainment and suspension/deposition as well as the exchange and transport of chemical species between the channel core flow and the fluid within the roughness bed.  Two techniques are generally used to extract turbulence information from engine flows: the ensemble and cyclic, or scale-based average. A new method is proposed here that uses an energy-based cyclic averaging technique. The energy-based filter proves to be superior in removing the coherent events associated with the cycle-to-cycle variations in the mean flow. Received: 8 June 1998/Accepted: 20 March 2000  相似文献

Development and characterization of a variable turbulence generation system   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Experimental turbulent combustion studies require systems that can simulate the turbulence intensities [u′/U 0 ~ 20–30% (Koutmos and McGuirk in Exp Fluids 7(5):344–354, 1989)] and operating conditions of real systems. Furthermore, it is important to have systems where turbulence intensity can be varied independently of mean flow velocity, as quantities such as turbulent flame speed and turbulent flame brush thickness exhibit complex and not yet fully understood dependencies upon both U 0 and u′. Finally, high pressure operation in a highly pre-heated environment requires systems that can be sealed, withstand high gas temperatures, and have remotely variable turbulence intensity that does not require system shut down and disassembly. This paper describes the development and characterization of a variable turbulence generation system for turbulent combustion studies. The system is capable of a wide range of turbulence intensities (10–30%) and turbulent Reynolds numbers (140–2,200) over a range of flow velocities. An important aspect of this system is the ability to vary the turbulence intensity remotely, without changing the mean flow velocity. This system is similar to the turbulence generators described by Videto and Santavicca (Combust Sci Technol 76(1):159–164, 1991) and Coppola and Gomez (Exp Therm Fluid Sci 33(7):1037–1048, 2009), where variable blockage ratio slots are located upstream of a contoured nozzle. Vortical structures from the slots impinge on the walls of the contoured nozzle to produce fine-scale turbulence. The flow field was characterized for two nozzle diameters using three-component Laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and hotwire anemometry for mean flow velocities from 4 to 50 m/s. This paper describes the key design features of the system, as well as the variation of mean and RMS velocity, integral length scales, and spectra with nozzle diameter, flow velocity, and turbulence generator blockage ratio.  相似文献

The phase-averaging window size is shown to affect the measurement of phase-averaged turbulence quantities in unsteady turbulent flows. The flow turbulence is usually estimated on the assumption of quasi-constant flow velocity during the duration of the phase-averaging window. The calculated turbulence level then consists of two parts: one due to the turbulent velocity fluctuations and the other due to the changes in the mean flow velocity. This second part is shown to be directly proportional to the averaging window size. In order to determine the true turbulence the averaging window size has to be made as small as possible, especially if the unsteady flow exhibits large temporal gradients and the flow turbulence itself is small. In many cases, turbulence is superimposed on an unsteady organized motion of a mean flow. In the past, these turbulent flows have been studied by time or ensemble averaging methods and some decomposition techniques such as proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). In this study, a new decomposition technique called the turbulence filter will be used to decompose the forced turbulent jet flows. By using the turbulence filtering technique, the fluctuating (turbulent) part and the more organized (forced) part of the velocity field are analyzed. Within this context several experiments on organized turbulent jet flow have been carried out. In the experiments, variable frequency and amplitude oscillation are imposed on a 1D jet. An elliptical plate was used in order to obtain sinusoidal forcing. The axial distance, Reynolds number and the forcing frequency of the signal were varied. The multiple hot wires (six probes) were used to investigate the evolution of the signal along the radial distance. The obtained results of the turbulence filter are compared with those of phase-averaging and POD techniques. The eigenmodes of the data are also evaluated by using the POD method. Conclusions The data we have presented comparing mean velocity and turbulence intensity measurements from scavenged and unscavenged engine cycles were obtained for two engine speeds, two intake flow configurations, and two locations of the spark plug relative to the LDV probe volume. The results show that in some circumstances the gas flow in the hotter unscavenged cycles is significantly different from the cooler scavenged cycles, but that for other cases the differences are within the uncertainty of the measurements. In addition, it is apparent that seemingly small changes in the geometry can strongly influence the local flow field. This sensitivity to detail leads us to conclude that it is not possible to make a comprehensive statement about the similarities of gas velocities in motored and fired engines. However, we do feel that some guidelines can be proposed: (1) It should never be presumed that the pre-ignition gas velocities in motored and fired engines are similar. Very large differences can occur. (2) Swirl that persists up to the time of ignition adds order and energy to the flow field, which reduces the likelihood for velocity differences between motored and fired engines; if the swirl motion is destroyed prior to ignition, to produce turbulence, this statement is far less likely to be valid. (3) Motored engine studies are sometimes dictated by the need to use the spark plug port for optical access; in this instance it is doubly important not to presume that the velocities measured are representative of the flow in the spark gap of a fired engine. (4) Skip-firing an engine is a valuable research technique for eliminating the complications of residual gases; however, the pre-ignition flow field of the fired cycles cannot be presumed to be applicable to a continuously fired engine.  相似文献

Flow interaction with a bluff body generates a highly complex flow field and has been the subject of much experimental and theoretical analysis. It has been shown that large eddy simulation (LES) modelling provides a more realistic analysis of the flow for such situations where the large scales of turbulence must be resolved. The inherent small-scale spatial velocity averaging in particle image velocimetry (PIV) is commensurate with the sub-grid scale modelling of LES and, therefore, offers potential as a code refinement technique. To demonstrate this potential, however, PIV must be performed with a temporal resolution of typically kHz and a spatial resolution of sub-mm2 to be relevant for the vast majority of flows of engineering interest. This paper reports the development of a high-speed PIV system capable of operating at 20 kHz with a spatial resolution of 0.9 mm2. This is the combined highest speed, highest resolution PIV data reported to date. The experiment chosen to demonstrate the system is the study of the steady flow interaction with circular and square cross-section obstacles. A Reynolds number of 3,900 is chosen for the cylinder flow to extend the database used by Breuer M. (1998 Int J Heat Fluid 19:512–521) in his extensive LES modelling of this flow. Data presented include a sequence of two-dimensional velocity and vorticity fields, including flow streamlines. Importantly, the random error, inherent in a PIV measurement, is discussed and a formula presented which allows the error to be estimated and regions of the flow identified where LES comparisons would be uncertain.  相似文献

Stereoscopic PIV: validation and application to an isotropic turbulent flow   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
A new stereoscopic PIV system to measure the three velocity components is developed and applied to grid turbulence flows. This system uses two CCD cameras coupled with an accurate cross-correlation calculation method. An experimental test (based upon three-dimensional displacements) has been carried out to demonstrate the capability of this process to locate the maximum of correlation, and to detect accurately the 3D displacements. Experiments in a well-established turbulent flow have validated the method for quantitative measurements and a comparison with LDV results showed a good agreement in terms of mean and fluctuating velocities. Combined PIV and stereoscopic PIV measurements on a turbulent flow revealed the need to the stereoscopic systems to measure accurate 2D velocity fields. It has been shown that an error of up to 10% in the velocity fluctuation measured by conventional PIV could be attained due to 3D effects in highly turbulent cases. Finally, the digital cross-correlation technique adapted to the determination of small displacements seems to be the most suitable technique for stereoscopic PIV. The results of numerically modeling two-dimensional two-phase flow of the “gas-solid particles” type in a vertical turbulent jet are presented for three cases of its configuration, namely, descending, ascending, and without account of gravity. Both flow phases are modeled on the basis of the Navier-Stokes equations averaged within the framework of the Reynolds approximation and closed by an extended k-? turbulence model. The averaged two-phase flow parameters (particle and gas velocities, particle concentration, turbulent kinetic energy, and its dissipation) are described using the model of mutually-penetrating continua. The model developed allows for both the direct effect of turbulence on the motion of disperse-phase particles and the inverse effect of the particles on turbulence leading to either an increase or a decrease in the turbulent kinetic energy of the gas. The model takes account for gravity, viscous drag, and the Saffman lift. The system of equations is solved using a difference method. The calculated results are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data which confirms the effect of solid particles on the mean and turbulent characteristics of gas jets.  相似文献

A single subcooled jet of water which undergoes boiling upon impingement on a discrete heat source is studied experimentally using time-resolved stereo particle image velocimetry (PIV). The impinging jet issues from a 3.75 mm diameter sharp-edged orifice in a confining orifice plate positioned 4 orifice diameters from the target surface. The behavior at jet Reynolds numbers of 5,000 and 15,000 is compared for a constant jet inlet subcooling of 10 °C. Fluorescent illumination allows for simultaneous imaging of both the flow tracers and the vapor bubbles in the flow. Flow structure, time-averaged velocities, and turbulence statistics are reported for the liquid regions within the confinement gap for a range of heat inputs at both Reynolds numbers, and the effect of the vapor generation on the flow is discussed. Vapor generation from boiling is found to modify the liquid velocities and turbulence fluctuations in the confinement gap. Flow in the confinement gap is dominated by vapor flow, and the vapor bubbles disrupt both the vertical impinging jet and horizontal wall jet flow. Moreover, vapor bubbles are a significant source of turbulence kinetic energy and dissipation, with the bubbly regions above the heated surface experiencing the most intense turbulence modification. Spectral analysis indicates that a Strouhal number of 0.023 is characteristic of the interaction between bubbles and turbulent liquid jets.  相似文献

This study revealed the three-dimensional instantaneous topologies of the large-scale turbulence structures in the separated flow on the suction surface of wind turbine’s blade during stall delay. These structures are the major contributors to the first two POD (proper orthogonal decomposition) modes. The two kinds of instantaneous flow structures as major contributors to the first POD mode are: (1) extended regions of downwash flow with an upstream upward flow beside it and a compact vortex pair closer to the blade’s leading edge; (2) a large-scale clockwise vortex with strong induced flows. The two kinds of flow structures contributing significantly to the second POD mode are: (1) large counter-rotating vortices inducing strong upward velocities and a series of small vortices; (2) strong downwash flow coming from the leading-edge shear layer with a large and strong vortex on the left side and small vortices upstream. The statistical impacts of these large-scale and energetic structures on the turbulence have also been studied. It was observed that when these turbulence structures were removed from the flow, the peak values of some statistics were significantly reduced.

It is known from smoke visualizations that in a transitional boundary layer subjected to free-stream turbulence, streaks appear and eventually break down to turbulence after wavy motions. In order to observe the streaky structures directly, a stereo particle-tracking velocimetry system using hydrogen bubbles in a water channel has been developed and validated against laser Doppler velocimetry. Mean flow statistics show good agreement with previous results. With the developed measurement system, the instantaneous spanwise distribution of the streamwise and wall-normal velocities can be measured fast enough to resolve the time development of the streaky structures. Measurements of instantaneous spanwise distributions of the streamwise and wall-normal velocity disturbances show strong negative correlation between the wall-normal and streamwise velocities in the streaks.  Fringe distortion with linear longitudinal variation in fringe spacing over the length of LDA measurement volume has been considered to influence the accuracy of flow measurement. The overestimation of the mean velocity and especially of the flow turbulence due to fringe distortion has been derived to be a function both of the fringe distortion number (which is a purely geometrical parameter of the measurement volume) and the flow turbulence to be measured. Against the usual expectation, it has been shown that the overestimation of the flow turbulence due to fringe distortion in the measurement volume could be neglected. Only for very low turbulence intensity dose the error become significant. As a reference this result could be used to estimate measurement errors which occur in the presence of other types of fringe distortion. Received: 2 December 1997/Accepted: 2 May 1998  相似文献

Experiments are carried out in order to investigate the flow structure past a rectangular, triangular and semi-circular cavity of length-to-depth ratio of 2:1 using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. The experiments are performed in a large scale water channel with three different upstream velocities resulting in Reynolds numbers of 1230, 1460 and 1700, based on inflow momentum thickness, for each cavity type. Contours of constant averaged streamwise and transverse components of velocity, contours of constant averaged vorticity, Reynolds stress and streamline plots for each cavity type for the aforementioned three Reynolds numbers are presented. In addition, streamwise velocity, Reynolds stress and turbulence intensity values are compared for all cavity types. Effect of cavity shape on flow structure within the cavity is discussed in detail. Moreover, spectrum of instantaneous streamwise velocity fluctuations in shear layer near the downstream of the leading corner and the upstream of the trailing corner of the cavities are obtained and it was found that no organized oscillations are present in the flow; rectangular and triangular cavities have the largest amplitudes while semi-circular cavity has the smallest. Calculated turbulence intensities also reveal that the maximum turbulence intensities occur at cavity lid in the centerline section and rectangular and triangular cavities have larger turbulence intensity compared to semi-circular cavity.  相似文献

The flow structure in a steady hydraulic jump in both the non-aerated and aerated regions was measured using the image-based particle image velocimetry and bubble image velocimetry techniques, respectively. Three highly aerated steady jumps with Froude numbers varying from 4.51 to 5.35 were tested, and a weak jump with a Froude number of 2.43 was generated for comparison. Mean velocities and turbulence statistics were obtained by ensemble averaging the repeated velocity measurements. Based on the mean velocities, the flow structure in the steady jumps was classified into four regions to distinguish their distinct flow behaviors; they are the potential core region, the boundary layer region, the mixing layer region, and the recirculation region. The flow structure in the weak jump features only three regions without the recirculation region. In addition, spatial variations of mean velocities, turbulence intensity, and Reynolds stresses were also presented. It was observed that the maximum horizontal bubble velocity and maximum horizontal water velocity occur at the same location in the overlapping regions of potential core and mixing layer. The ratio between the maximum horizontal bubble velocity and maximum horizontal water velocity is between 0.6 and 0.8, depending on the Froude number. Examining the mean horizontal bubble velocities in the mixing layer, a similarity profile was revealed with representative mixing layer thickness as the characteristic length scale and the difference between the maximum positive and maximum negative velocities as the characteristic velocity scale. It was also found that the mean horizontal water velocities in the near-wall region are self-similar and behave like a wall jet. Further analyzing autocorrelation functions and energy spectra of the water and bubble velocity fluctuations found that the energy spectra in the water region follow the ?5/3 slope, whereas the spectra in the bubble region follow a ?2/5 slope. In addition, the integral length scale of bubbles is one order of magnitude shorter than that of water.  相似文献

In this communication, the Digital Image Compression (DIC) – PIV system is introduced. The present system allows the measurement of mean and RMS velocities in turbulent flow fields, using JPEG digital image compression technique for on-line recording of thousands of images. The decompression and subsequent analysis of the images, performed by means of digital cross-correlation technique, is carried out off-line. Errors incurred by the application of the compression method are assessed and discussed. The effect of the compression is firstly analysed by linearly traversing (synthetic) computer-generated PIV-images at constant velocity. Secondly, accurate LDA measurements and data from direct numerical simulation (DNS) are used as a basis for the analysis in a low Reynolds number open water channel flow. The results show that excellent agreement between LDA and DIC–PIV measurements for mean and RMS velocities can be achieved using a compression factor up to 12. A turbulent plane offset jet with small offset ratio   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Mean velocities and turbulence characteristics of a turbulent plane offset jet with a small offset ratio of 2.125 have been studied using laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). Static pressure measurements highlight the importance of side plates in enhancing two-dimensionality of the jet. The spatial distributions of turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stress show a high turbulence recirculating flow region close to the nozzle plate between the jet and the offset plate. The LDA results have been used to examine the capability of three different turbulence models (i.e. k–ɛ, RNG and Reynolds stress) in predicting the velocity field of this jet. While all three models are able to predict qualitatively the recirculation, converging and reattachment regions observed experimentally, the standard k–ɛ turbulence model predicts a reattachment length that best agrees with the experimentally determined value. A detail study involving flow visualization, Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) measurements and numerical prediction is presented. The visualization experiments revealed striking results of a pulsatile motion in the separated flow region associated with the formation and passage of large eddy structures. Measurements of mean velocities and turbulence intensity profiles across the separated flow field, provided information about the separated shear layer development and the recirculating flow pattern. The numerical predictions, obtained with a two-layer turbulence model in conjunction with the SIMPLE algorithm, failed to reproduce the coherent eddies and the pulsatile motion, but the mean velocities are reasonably reproduced.  相似文献
