The dynamical behavior of a general n-dimensional delay differential equation (DDE) around a 1:3 resonant double Hopf bifurcation point is analyzed. The method of multiple scales is used to obtain complex bifurcation equations. By expressing complex amplitudes in a mixed polar-Cartesian representation, the complex bifurcation equations are again obtained in real form. As an illustration, a system of two coupled van der Pol oscillators is considered and a set of parameter values for which a 1:3 resonant double Hopf bifurcation occurs is established. The dynamical behavior around the resonant double Hopf bifurcation point is analyzed in terms of three control parameters. The validity of analytical results is shown by their consistency with numerical simulations.

In this paper, bifurcation trees of period-3 motions to chaos in the periodically forced, hardening Duffing oscillator are investigated analytically. Analytical solutions for period-3 and period-6 motions are used for the bifurcation trees of period-3 motions to chaos. Such bifurcation trees are based on the Hopf bifurcations of asymmetric period-3 motions. In addition, an independent symmetric period-3 motion without imbedding in chaos is discovered, and such a symmetric period-3 motion possesses saddle-node bifurcations only. The switching of symmetric to asymmetric period-3 motions is completed through saddle-node bifurcations, and the onset of asymmetric period-6 motions occurs at the Hopf bifurcations of asymmetric period-3 motions. Continuously, the onset of period-12 motions is at the Hopf bifurcation of asymmetric period-6 motions. With such bifurcation trees, the chaotic motions relative to asymmetric period-3 motions can be determined analytically. This investigation provides a systematic way to study analytical dynamics of chaos relative to period-m motions in nonlinear dynamical systems.

A delayed oncolytic virus dynamics with continuous control is investigated. The local stability of the infected equilibrium is discussed by analyzing the associated characteristic transcendental equation. By choosing the delay ?? as a bifurcation parameter, we show that Hopf bifurcation can occur as the delay ?? crosses some critical values. Using the normal form theory and the center manifold reduction, explicit formulae are derived to determine the direction of bifurcations and the stability and other properties of bifurcating periodic solutions. Numerical simulations are carried out to support the theoretical results.

A kind of 2-dimensional neural network model with delay is considered. By analyzing the distribution of the roots of the characteristic equation associated with the model, a bifurcation diagram was drawn in an appropriate parameter plane. It is found that a line is a pitchfork bifurcation curve. Further more, the stability of each fixed point and existence of Hopf bifurcation were obtained. Finally, the direction of the Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions were determined by using the normal form method and centre manifold theory. Spatiotemporal periodic patterns, including phase-locked oscillations, mirror-reflecting waves, standing waves, in-phase or anti-phase oscillations are investigated in a ring of bidirectionally coupled oscillators with neutral delay feedback. It is confirmed that neutral feedback makes Hopf bifurcation occur in a larger domain of parameters. We calculate the normal forms near Hopf bifurcation, D N equivariant Hopf bifurcation and double-Hopf bifurcation in this neutral equation by using the method of multiple scales. Theoretically, the appearance of the in-phase, anti-phase and phase-locked oscillations that we observed in the simulation about a ring of delay coupled Hindmarsh–Rose neurons with neutral feedback is explained.

The postcritical behavior of a generaln-dimensional system around a resonant double Hopf bifurcation isanalyzed. Both cases in which the critical eigenvalues are in ratios of1:2 and 1:3 are investigated. The Multiple Scale Method is employedto derive the bifurcation equations systematically in terms of thederivatives of the original vector field evaluated at the criticalstate. Expansions of the n-dimensional vector of state variables andof a three-dimensional vector of control parameters are performed interms of a unique perturbation parameter ε, of the order ofthe amplitude of motion. However, while resonant terms only appear atthe ε3-order in the 1:3 case, they already arise at theε2-order in the 1:2 case. Thus, by truncating theanalysis at the ε3-order in both cases, first orsecond-order bifurcation equations are respectively drawn, the latterrequiring resort to the reconstitution principle. A two-degrees-of-freedom system undergoing resonant double Hopf bifurcations isstudied. The complete postcritical scenario is analyzed in terms of thethree control parameters and the asymptotic results are compared withexact numerical integrations for both resonances. Branches of periodicas well as periodically modulated solutions are found and theirstability analyzed.

This paper focuses on the local stability of a FAST TCP model of Internet congestion control algorithms. Necessary and sufficient stability conditions in terms of key system parameters are given, which can provide exact guideline for setting system parameters. In addition, the complex dynamics of the system is also addressed. We demonstrate that Hopf bifurcation would occur when the gain parameter ?? is less than a critical value. Furthermore, the direction and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions are determined by applying the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. Finally, some numerical examples are given to verify the theoretical analysis.

The effect of the nonlinear terms on bifurcation behaviors of limit cycles of a simplified railway wheelset model is investigated. At first, the stable equilibrium state loses its stability via a Hopf bifurcation. The bifurcation curve is divided into a supercritical branch and a subcritical one by a generalized Hopf point, which plays a key role in determining the occurrence of flange contact and derailment of high-speed railway vehicles, and the occurrence of this critical situation is an important decision-making criteria for design parameters. Secondly, bifurcations of limit cycles are discussed by comparing the bifurcation behavior of cycles for two different nonlinear parameters. Unlike local Hopf bifurcation analysis based on a single bifurcation parameter in most papers, global bifurcation analysis of limit cycles based on two bifurcation parameters is investigated, simultaneously. It is shown that changing nonlinear parameter terms can affect bifurcation types of cycles and division of parameter domains. In particular, near the branch points of cycles, two symmetrical limit cycles are created by a pitchfork bifurcation and then two symmetrical cycles both undergo a period-doubling bifurcation to form two stable period-two cycles. Around the resonant points, period orbits can make several turns, whose number of turns corresponds to the ratio of resonance. Thirdly, near the Neimark–Sacker bifurcation of cycles, a stable torus is created by a supercritical Neimark–Sacker bifurcation, which shows that the orbit of the model exhibits modulated oscillations with two frequencies near the limit cycle. These results demonstrate that nonlinear parameter terms can produce very complex global bifurcation phenomena and make obvious effects on possible hunting motions even though a simple railway wheelset model is concerned.

In this paper, a more general two-neuron model with distributed delays and weak kernel is investigated. By applying the frequency domain approach and analyzing the associated characteristic equation, the existence of bifurcation parameter point is determined. Furthermore, we found that if the mean delay is used as a bifurcation parameter, Hopf bifurcation occurs for the weak kernel. This means that a family of periodic solutions bifurcates from the equilibrium when the bifurcation parameter exceeds a critical value. The direction and stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions are determine by the Nyquist criterion and the graphical Hopf bifurcation theorem. Some numerical simulations for justifying the theoretical analysis are also given.

We consider a novel congestion control model, i.e., the exponential RED algorithm with a single link and single source. Using the gain parameter of the system instead of the delay as the bifurcation parameter, the linear stability and Hopf bifurcation are investigated, and the stability and direction of the Hopf bifurcation are determined by employing the normal form method and the center manifold reduction. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate our theoretical results.

This paper investigates the dynamical behaviors for a four-dimensional energy resource system with time delay, especially in terms of equilibria analyses and Hopf bifurcation analysis. By setting the time delay as a bifurcation parameter, it is shown that Hopf bifurcation would occur when the time delay exceeds a sequence of critical values. Furthermore, the stability and direction of the Hopf bifurcation are determined via the normal form theory and the center manifold reduction theorem. Numerical examples are given in the end of the paper to verify the theoretical results.

In this paper, we consider a classical van der Pol equation with a general delayed feedback. Firstly, by analyzing the associated characteristic equation, we derive a set of parameter values where the Hopf bifurcation occurs. Secondly, in the case of the standard Hopf bifurcation, the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions and bifurcation direction are determined by applying the normal form theorem and the center manifold theorem. Finally, a generalized Hopf bifurcation corresponding to non-semisimple double imaginary eigenvalues (case of 1:1 resonance) is analyzed by using a normal form approach.

A new procedure for analyzing the stochastic Hopf bifurcation of quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian systems is proposed. A quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian system is first reduced to an one-dimensional Itô stochastic differential equation for the averaged Hamiltonian by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian systems. Then the relationship between the qualitative behavior of the stationary probability density of the averaged Hamiltonian and the sample behaviors of the one-dimensional diffusion process of the averaged Hamiltonian near the two boundaries is established. Thus, the stochastic Hopf bifurcation of the original system is determined approximately by examining the sample behaviors of the averaged Hamiltonian near the two boundaries. Two examples are given to illustrate and test the proposed procedure.

An axially symmetric perturbed isotropic harmonic oscillator undergoes several bifurcations as the parameter adjusting the relative strength of the two terms in the cubic potential is varied. We show that three of these bifurcations are Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcations. To this end we analyse an appropriately chosen normal form. It turns out that the linear behaviour is not that of a typical Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation as the eigen-values completely vanish at the bifurcation. However, the nonlinear structure is that of a Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation. The result is obtained by formulating geometric criteria involving the normalized Hamiltonian and the reduced phase space.

It is usually essential to reveal the relationship between continuous-time systems and discrete-time ones. First, a discrete-time recurrent neural network is presented by the Euler scheme in this paper. Then, the time step size is set to a bifurcation parameter and frequency domain approach is adopted for Hopf bifurcation analysis. Moreover, the periodic solutions are obtained by the harmonic balance method; then the stability conditions are presented. The critical step size is determined with which the discrete-time recurrent neural network can inherit the stable state of the continuous-time one. Finally, one numerical example of the discrete-time recurrent neural network is given to support the theoretical analysis.

A van der Pol type system with delayed feedback is explored by employing the two variable expansion perturbation method. The perturbation scheme is based on choosing a critical value for the delay corresponding to a Hopf bifurcation in the unperturbed ε=0 system. The resulting amplitude–delay relation predicts two Hopf bifurcation curves, such that in the region between these two curves oscillations will be quenched. The perturbation results are verified by comparison with numerical integration.

In this paper, we address the problem of the bifurcation control of a delayed fractional-order dual model of congestion control algorithms. A fractional-order proportional–derivative (PD) feedback controller is designed to control the bifurcation generated by the delayed fractional-order congestion control model. By choosing the communication delay as the bifurcation parameter, the issues of the stability and bifurcations for the controlled fractional-order model are studied. Applying the stability theorem of fractional-order systems, we obtain some conditions for the stability of the equilibrium and the Hopf bifurcation. Additionally, the critical value of time delay is figured out, where a Hopf bifurcation occurs and a family of oscillations bifurcate from the equilibrium. It is also shown that the onset of the bifurcation can be postponed or advanced by selecting proper control parameters in the fractional-order PD controller. Finally, numerical simulations are given to validate the main results and the effectiveness of the control strategy.

In this paper we revisit a 3D autonomous chaotic system, which contains both the modified Lorenz system and the conjugate Chen system, presented in [Huang and Yang, Chaos Solitons Fractals 39:567–578, 2009]. First by citing two examples to show the errors and limitations for the local stability of the equilibrium point S + obtained in this literature, we formulate a complete determining criterion for the local stability of S + of this system. Although the local bifurcation problem of this system, mainly for Hopf bifurcation, etc., has been studied, the invoking of incorrect proposition leads to an incorrect result for Hopf bifurcation. We then renew the study of the Hopf bifurcation of this system by utilizing the Project Method. The global bifurcation problem, relatively speaking, should be more difficult than the local bifurcation problem for a given system. However, the global bifurcation problem of this system, to the best of our knowledge, has not been investigated yet in the literatures. So next we consider the global bifurcation problem for this system, mainly for the existence of homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits. Our results, one of which shows the existence of two heteroclinic orbits, not only correct and further supplement the ones obtained in the literature, but also give something new to theoretically help fully understand the occurrence of chaos.
