The theory of plane waves in nonlinear materials described by the Murnaghan potential is proposed. The theory takes into account both the classical quadratic nonlinearity and the cubic nonlinearity of the basic wave equations. Some new opportunities for the wave interaction analysis are commented on: in addition to the second harmonics, a longitudinal plane wave generates the third one, a transverse plane wave generates the third harmonics, and horizontally and vertically polarized transverse plane waves jointly generate new waves  相似文献

An analysis of the linear and nonlinear acoustic responses from an interface between rough surfaces in elastoplastic contact is presented as a model of the ultrasonic wave interactions with imperfect interfaces and closed cracks. A micromechanical elastoplastic contact model predicts the linear and second order interfacial stiffness from the topographic and mechanical properties of the contacting surfaces during a loading–unloading cycle. The effects of those surface properties on the linear and nonlinear reflection/transmission of elastic longitudinal waves are shown. The second order harmonic amplitudes of reflected/transmitted waves decrease by more than an order of magnitude during the transition from the elastic contact mode to the elastoplastic contact mode. It is observed that under specific loading histories the interface between smooth surfaces generates higher elastoplastic hysteresis in the interfacial stiffness and the acoustic nonlinearity than interfaces between rough surfaces. The results show that when plastic flow in the contacting asperities is significant, the acoustic nonlinearity is insensitive to the asperity peak distribution. A comparison with existing experimental data for the acoustic nonlinearity in the transmitted waves is also given with a discussion on its contact mechanical implication.  相似文献

We demonstrate that it is expedient to use the complete expansion of the potential in terms of strain gradients for materials whose deformation is described by Murnaghan's potential. The cubic terms are retained in the constitutive equations, in addition to the classical quadratic terms. An analysis of the nonlinear system of wave equations reveals that the third harmonics can be generated. As an example, the nonlinear interaction of plane waves is analyzed for the following three cases of waves entering a medium: (i) a longitudinal wave, (ii) a vertically polarized transverse wave, and (iii) vertically and horizontally polarized transverse waves  相似文献

The propagation and interaction of hyperelastic cylindrical waves are studied. Nonlinearity is introduced by means of the Murnaghan potential and corresponds to the quadratic nonlinearity of all basic relationships. To analyze wave propagation, an asymptotic representation of the Hankel function of the first order and first kind is used. The second-order analytical solution of the nonlinear wave equation is similar to that for a plane longitudinal wave and is the sum of the first and second harmonics, with the difference that the amplitudes of cylindrical harmonics decrease with the distance traveled by the wave. A primary computer analysis of the distortion of the initial wave profile is carried out for six classical hyperelastic materials. The transformation of the first harmonic of a cylindrical wave into the second one is demonstrated numerically. Three ways of allowing for nonlinearities are compared __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika, Vol. 41, No. 7, pp. 73–82, July 2005.  相似文献

The use of nonlinear ultrasonic waves has been accepted as a potential technique to characterize the state of material micro-structure in solids. The typical nonlinear phenomenon is generation of second harmonics. Second harmonic generation of ultrasonic waves propagation has been vigorously studied for tracking material micro-damages in unbounded media and plate-like waveguides. However, there are few studies of launching second harmonic guided wave propagation in tube-like structures. Considering that second harmonics could provide useful information sensitive for material degradation condition, this research aims at developing a procedure for detecting second harmonics of ultrasonic guided wave in an isotropic pipe. The second harmonics generation of guided wave propagation in an isotropic and stress-free elastic pipe is investigated. Flexible polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) comb transducers are used to measure fundamental wave and second harmonic one. Experimental results show that nonlinear parameters increase monotonically with propagation distance. This work experimentally verifies that the second harmonics of guided waves in pipe have the cumulative effect with propagation distance. The proposed procedure is applied to assessing thermal fatigue damage indicated by nonlinearity in an aluminum pipe. The experimental observation verifies that nonlinear guided waves can be used to assess damage levels in early thermal fatigue state by correlating them with the acoustic nonlinearity.  相似文献

In this article, we present a new constitutive model for studying ultrasonic third harmonic generation in elastic solids. The model is hyperelastic in nature with two parameters characterizing the linear elastic material response and two other parameters characterizing the nonlinear response. The limiting response of the model as the nonlinearity parameters tend to zero is shown to be the well-known St Venant–Kirchhoff model. Also, the symmetric response of the model in tension and compression and its role in third harmonic generation is shown. Numerical simulations are carried out to study third harmonic generation in materials characterized by the proposed constitutive model. Predicted third harmonic guided wave generation reveals an increasing third harmonic content with increasing nonlinearity. On the other hand, the second harmonics are independent of the nonlinearity parameters and are generated due to the geometric nonlinearity. The feasibility of determining the nonlinearity parameters from third harmonic measurements is qualitatively discussed.  相似文献

The propagation of elastic waves is studied in a porous solid saturated with two immiscible viscous fluids. The propagation of three longitudinal waves is represented through three scalar potential functions. The lone transverse wave is presented by a vector potential function. The displacements of particles in different phases of the aggregate are defined in terms of these potential functions. It is shown that there exist three longitudinal waves and one transverse wave. The phenomena of reflection and refraction due to longitudinal and transverse waves at a plane interface between an elastic solid half-space and a porous solid half-space saturated with two immiscible viscous fluids are investigated. For the presence of viscosity in pore-fluids,the waves refracted to the porous medium attenuate in the direction normal to the interface. The ratios of the amplitudes of the reflected and refracted waves to that of the incident wave are calculated as a nonsingular system of linear algebraic equations. These amplitude ratios are used to further calculate the shares of different scattered waves in the energy of the incident wave. The modulus of the amplitude and the energy ratios with the angle of incidence are computed for a particular numerical model. The conservation of the energy across the interface is verified. The effects of variations in non-wet saturation of pores and frequencies on the energy partition are depicted graphically and discussed.  相似文献

The two-dimensional elastic wave propagation in an infinite layered structure with nonlinear interlayer interfaces is analyzed theoretically to investigate the second-harmonic generation due to interfacial nonlinearity. The structure consists of identical isotropic linear elastic layers that are bonded to each other by spring-type interfaces possessing identical linear normal and shear stiffnesses but different quadratic nonlinearity parameters. Explicit analytical expressions are derived for the second-harmonic amplitudes when a single monochromatic Bloch mode propagates in the structure in arbitrary directions by applying the transfer-matrix approach and the Bloch theorem to the governing equations linearized by a perturbation method. The second-harmonic generation by a single nonlinear interface and by multiple consecutive nonlinear interfaces are shown to be profoundly influenced by the band structure of the layered structure, the fundamental Bloch wave mode, and its propagation direction. In particular, the second harmonics generated at multiple consecutive interfaces are found to grow cumulatively with the propagation distance when the phase matching occurs between the Bloch modes at the fundamental and double frequencies.  相似文献

Consideration is given to the nonlinear theory of elastic waves with cubic nonlinearity. This nonlinearity is separated out, and the interaction of four harmonic waves is studied. The method of slowly varying amplitudes is used. The shortened and evolution equations, the first integrals of these equations (Manley–Rowe relations), and energy balance law for a set of four interacting waves (quadruplet) are derived. The interaction of waves is described using the wavefront reversal scheme  相似文献

The influence of the second and third harmonics on the evolution of a harmonic longitudinal wave propagating through a nonlinearly elastic material has been simulated for real composite materials (the most typical plots are presented for a granulated composite with copper granules and molybdenum matrix). The frequency and initial amplitude are varied beginning from conditionally small values (at which visible distortions appear after a great number of oscillations) to extremely large values (at which the profile becomes distorted already after the second or third oscillation). Four and three different stages of profile evolution due to the influence of the second and third harmonics, respectively, are observed. It is found out that the effect of the initial amplitude on the evolution process is weaker for the second harmonic, and the effect of the frequency on the evolution process is weaker for the third harmonics. It is also revealed that the ranges of frequencies and initial amplitudes within which the evolution caused by different harmonics is very intensive are different—the effect of the third harmonic is stronger at larger values of both parameters. The effects of both harmonics are tantamount within the boundary ranges where the second harmonic is already predominant and the third harmonic is at the early stage of development  相似文献

The perturbation (small-parameter) method is used to obtain the first three approximations for the problem of a harmonic longitudinal plane wave propagating in a quadratic nonlinear hyperelastic material described by the classical Murnaghan model. The subsequent approximations are discussed. The contribution of each approximation to the overall wave pattern is analyzed. It is shown that the third approximation corrects the prediction of the evolution of the initial wave profile. Which of the harmonics dominates depends on the distance traveled by the wave: the second harmonic is generated first, then it transforms into the fourth harmonic, and finally, as the distance increases, the eighth harmonic shows  相似文献

Based on the poroelasticity theory, this article investigates the reflection and transmission characteristics of an incident plane transverse wave at a plane interface between an isotropic elastic half-space and an unsaturated poroelastic solid half-space. For this purpose, the effect of the saturation degree and frequency on the properties of the four bulk waves in unsaturated porous medium, i.e., three longitudinal waves and one transverse wave, are discussed at first. Two general cases of mode conversion are considered: (i) The initial transverse wave is incident from an unsaturated poroelastic half-space to the interface, and (ii) the initial transverse wave is incident from an elastic solid half-space to the interface. The expressions for the partition of energy at the interface during transmission and reflection process of waves are presented in explicit forms. At last, numerical computations are performed for these two cases and the results obtained are depicted, respectively. The variation of the amplitude ratios and energy ratios with the saturation degree and incident angle is illustrated in detail. It is also verified that, at the interface, the sum of energy ratios is approximately equal to unity as expected.  相似文献

We propose a mass sensing scheme in which amplitude shifts within a nonlinear ultra-wide broadband resonance serve as indicators for mass detection. To achieve the broad resonance bandwidth, we considered a nonlinear design of the resonator comprised of a doubly clamped beam with a concentrated mass at its center. A reduced-order model of the beam system was constructed in the form of a discrete spring-mass system that contains cubic stiffness due to axial stretching of the beam in addition to linear stiffness (Duffing equation). The cubic nonlinearity has a stiffening effect on the frequency response causing nonlinear bending of the frequency response toward higher frequencies. Interestingly, we found that the presence of the concentrated mass broadens the resonant bandwidth significantly, allowing for an ultra-wide operational range of frequencies and response amplitudes in the proposed mass sensing scheme. A secondary effect of the cubic nonlinearity is strong amplification of the third harmonic in the beam’s response. We computationally study the sensitivity of the first and third harmonic amplitudes to mass addition and find that both metrics are more sensitive than the linearized natural frequency and that in particular, the third harmonic amplitude is most sensitive. This type of open-loop mass sensing avoids complex feedback control and time-consuming frequency sweeping. Moreover, the mass resolution is within a functional range, and the design parameters of the resonator are reasonable from a manufacturing perspective.  相似文献

Shear to longitudinal mode conversion via second harmonic generation is studied theoretically and computationally for plane waves in a two-dimensional, adhesive, hexagonally close-packed microscale granular medium. The model includes translational and rotational degrees of freedom, as well as normal and shear contact interactions. We consider fundamental frequency plane waves in all three linear modes, which have infinite spatial extent and travel in one of the high-symmetry crystal directions. The generated second harmonic waves are longitudinal for all cases. For the lower transverse–rotational mode, an analytical expression for the second harmonic amplitude, which is derived using a successive approximations approach, reveals the presence of particular resonant and antiresonant wave numbers, the latter of which is prohibited if rotations are not included in the model. By simulating a lattice with adhesive contact force laws, we study the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis for non-resonant, resonant, and antiresonant cases. This work is suitable for the analysis of microscale and statically compressed macroscale granular media, and should inspire future studies on nonlinear two- and three-dimensional granular systems in which interparticle shear coupling and particle rotations play a significant role.  相似文献

The effect of elastic nonlinearity on the propagation of Rayleigh waves in an anisotropic elastic solid is considered. A nonlinear integro-differential equation is derived for a quantity which is related to the Fourier transform of the displacement component on the surface. The variation of this quantity along the surface accounts for the slow modulation of the wave through formation and depletion of the different harmonics. Explicit results are given for harmonic generation in an initially sinusoidal wave and for parametric amplification of a weak signal by a pump wave of twice its frequency.  相似文献

In this work, a 1D Pseudo-Spectral Time Domain (PSTD) algorithm has been developed for solving elastic wave equation in nonlinear heterogeneous solids using FFTs for calculation of the spatial differential operator on staggered grid. The solver uses a staggered fourth order Adams–Bashforth method, by which stress and particle velocity are updated at alternating half time steps, to integrate forward in time. To circumvent wraparound inherent to FFT-based pseudo-spectral simulation, Convolution Perfectly Matched Layer (CPML) boundary condition has been used to eliminate implementation problems linked in classical PML to the introduction in nonlinear elasticity of a time dependent bulk modulus. Different kinds of nonlinear elastic models (quadratic and cubic nonlinearity, Nazarov hysteretic nonlinearity, bi-modular nonlinearity, PM-Space nonlinearity) have been implemented. The present study will focus on the comparison of nonlinear signature (harmonics generation, shock, frequency shift and attenuation) of these different kinds of nonlinearity for rod resonance, shock wave generation. These results are expected to be useful in helping to determine the predominant nonlinear mechanism in a specific experiment.  相似文献

The paper discusses the results of theoretical and numerical analysis of the interaction of nonlinear elastic plane harmonic waves in a composite material whose nonlinear properties are described by modeling it with a two-phase mixture. The interaction of two transverse vertically polarized harmonic waves is studied using the method of slowly varying amplitudes. The truncated and evolutionary equations as well as the Manley-Rowe relations are derived. The mechanism of energy pumping from a strong pumping wave with frequency ω to a weak signal wave with frequency 3ω is analyzed. The switching mechanism for hypersonic waves in a nonlinear elastic composite is similar to the switching mechanism observed in transistors __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika, Vol. 43, No. 7, pp. 35–46, July 2007.  相似文献

The reflection and transmission of elastic waves through a couple-stress elastic slab that is sandwiched between two couple-stress elastic half-spaces are studied in this paper. Because of the couple-stress effects, there are three types of elastic waves in the couple-stress elastic solid, two of which are dispersive. The interface conditions between two couple-stress solids involve the surface couple and rotation apart from the surface traction and displacement. The nontraditional interface conditions between the slab and two solid half-spaces are used to obtain the linear algebraic equation sets from which the amplitude ratios of reflection and transmission waves to the incident wave can be determined. Then, the energy fluxes carried by the various reflection and transmission waves are calculated numerically and the normal energy flux conservation is used to validate the numerical results. The special case, couple-stress elastic slab sandwiched by the classical elastic half-spaces, is also studied and compared with the situation that the classical elastic slab sandwiched by the classical elastic half-spaces. Incident longitudinal wave (P wave) and incident transverse wave (SV wave) are both considered. The influences of the couple-stress are mainly discussed based on the numerical results. It is found that the couple-stress mainly influences the transverse modes of elastic waves.  相似文献

Wave propagation in a porous elastic medium saturated by two immiscible fluids is investigated. It is shown that there exist three dilatational waves and one transverse wave propagating with different velocities. It is found that the velocities of all the three longitudinal waves are influenced by the capillary pressure, while the velocity of transverse wave does not at all. The problem of reflection and refraction phenomena due to longitudinal and transverse wave incident obliquely at a plane interface between uniform elastic solid half-space and porous elastic half-space saturated by two immiscible fluids has been analyzed. The amplitude ratios of various reflected and refracted waves are found to be continuous functions of the angle of incidence. Expression of energy ratios of various reflected and refracted waves are derived in closed form. The amplitude ratios and energy ratios have been computed numerically for a particular model and the results obtained are depicted graphically. It is verified that during transmission there is no dissipation of energy at the interface. Some particular cases have also been reduced from the present formulation.  相似文献

The nonlinear interactions of longitudinal and shear waves in an isotropic solid medium are discussed in the nine-constant theory of elasticity. Expressions are obtained describing the generation of second and third harmonics of elastic waves in the approximations of a non-dispersive medium and in the presence of quasistatic elastic fields.  相似文献
