Two-thousand and ninety-two data of two-phase flow pressure drop were collected from 18 published papers of which the working fluids include R123, R134a, R22, R236ea, R245fa, R404a, R407C, R410a, R507, CO2, water and air. The hydraulic diameter ranges from 0.506 to 12 mm; Rel from 10 to 37,000, and Reg from 3 to 4 × 105. Eleven correlations and models for calculating the two-phase frictional pressure drop were evaluated based upon these data. The results show that the accuracy of the Lockhart–Martinelli method, Mishima and Hibiki correlation, Zhang and Mishima correlation and Lee and Mudawar correlation in the laminar region is very close to each other, while the Muller-Steinhagen and Heck correlation is the best among the evaluated correlations in the turbulent region. A modified Chisholm correlation was proposed, which is better than all of the evaluated correlations in the turbulent region and its mean relative error is about 29%. For refrigerants only, the new correlation and Muller-Steinhagen and Heck correlation are very close to each other and give better agreement than the other evaluated correlations.  相似文献

Pressure-drop and phase-distribution data were generated for air–water flows in a horizontal impacting tee junction. All three sides of the junction (37.8-mm i.d.) were oriented horizontally. The data correspond to a junction pressure of 1.5 bar (abs), ambient temperature, inlet flow regimes of wavy, stratified, and annular, and a wide range of mass splits at the junction. Most of the range for the phase-distribution data corresponds to conditions that were untested in previous investigations. In general, it was found that the phases did not distribute themselves evenly between the two outlets unless the mass split is equal. There is a serious lack of data in the literature on the two-phase pressure drop in impacting tee junctions and therefore, the present data add substantially to the existing data. A mechanistic model capable of predicting the phase distribution and pressure drop was developed and shown to be in general good agreement with the present data and others from the literature.  相似文献

In the present paper, two correlations have been developed to predict the effect of DRP on friction factor of two-phase flow for any pipe diameter. The correlations have been verified using published experimental results of DRP added to air–liquid annular flow and for oil–water flows with any flow pattern at the asymptotic state (maximum drag reduction). Such correlations are not available in literature and considered to be very useful in predicting the drag reduction using DRP and in understanding the most significant parameters that affecting the mechanism of drag reduction by polymers in multiphase flow.  相似文献

Multiphase chemical microreactors require a detailed knowledge of the flow conditions inside the reaction system. This paper reports flow visualization measurements of the two-phase gas–liquid flow pattern and the liquid velocity distribution inside liquid plugs of an intermittent flow. Rectangular cross-section silicon microchannels with hydraulic diameters between 187.5 and 218 μm are fabricated. Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) is used to determine the flow pattern. To analyze the influence of the liquid properties and the channel diameter on the two-phase flow pattern, we present flow regime maps using different channel geometries and fluids. A universal flow pattern map based on dimensional analysis is presented. In contrast to microchannel flows, a great number of correlations for flow characteristics for multiphase flow in (round) pipes with diameters >1 mm exist. We compare our experimental results from optical flow visualizations in microreactors with common flow correlations and regime maps for macro- and microchannels. The recirculation motion in the liquid segments of an intermittent gas–liquid flow is analyzed using micron-resolution particle image velocimetry (μPIV). The velocity distribution influences the mixing and the mass transport towards the reactive phase interface dealing with two-phase chemical reactions. For straight microchannels hardly any mass transport over the center line is quantified. For enhanced mixing geometrical adaptations are suggested.  相似文献

Flow patterns, the pressure drag reduction and the heat transfer in a vertical upward air–water flow with the surfactant having negligible environmental impact were studied experimentally in a tube of 2.5 cm in diameter. Visual observations showed that gas bubbles in the air–water solution with surfactant are smaller in size but much larger in number than in pure air–water mixture, at the all flow regimes. The transition lines in the flow regime map for the solution of air–water mixture with surfactant of the 300 ppm concentration are mainly consistent with the experimental data obtained in clear air–water mixture. An additive of surfactant to two-phase flow reduces the total pressure drop and decrease heat transfer, especially in the churn flow regime.  相似文献

In order to better quantify two-phase flow regime transitions, a sensor is developed which measures the electric capacitance of two-phase flows. A large number of experiments are done with air–water flow in a 9 mm ID horizontal tube. Based on a multivariate analysis, the most suitable sensor signal parameters are selected for building a flow regime classifier. This classifier is based on a fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm together with a regression technique. The output of the algorithm is used to create a probabilistic flow regime map. A comparison between a visual classification based on high speed camera images and the outcome of the flow regime classifier shows a remarkable agreement. The flow regime transitions are further quantified and discussed based on the probabilistic information and the sensor signal characterization. Probabilistic mapping makes it possible to combine flow regime dependent correlations in the two-phase flow models for heat transfer and pressure drop with smooth and appropriately quantified transitions from one flow regime to another.  相似文献

Flow condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) and pressure drop of R22, propylene, propane, DME and isobutane are measured on a horizontal plain tube. The main test section in the experimental flow loop is made of a plain copper tube of 8.8 mm inner diameter and 530 mm length. The refrigerant is cooled by passing cold water through the annulus surrounding the test section. Tests are performed at a fixed refrigerant saturation temperature of 40 ± 0.2 °C with mass fluxes of 100, 200, and 300 kg/m2 s and heat flux of 7.3–7.7 kW/m2. The heat transfer and pressure drop data are obtained in the vapor quality range of 10–90%. Test results show that for a given mass flux the flow condensation HTCs of propylene, propane, DME and isobutane are higher than those of R22 by up to 46.8%, 53.3%, 93.5% and 61.6%, respectively. Also well-known correlations developed based upon conventional fluorocarbon refrigerants predict the present data within a mean deviation of 33%. Finally, the pressure drop increases as the mass flux and quality increase and isobutane shows the highest pressure drop due to its lowest vapor pressure among the fluids tested.  相似文献

As part of a study on the effect of tube diameter on the mean drop size and liquid film flow rate in annular two-phase flow, data was obtained for the vertical upflow of an air-water system in a 20 mm internal diameter tube, held at a pressure of 1.5 bar and ambient temperature. This complements data taken in earlier experiments on 10 and 32 mm tubes. Increases in the superficial gas velocity caused reductions in the mean drop size whilst increasing the liquid mass flux in all but the lowest gas velocity case, caused the drop size to rise. Comparisons were made between the current drop size data and that from a 10 mm and 32 mm internal diameter tube, for similar conditions of temperature and pressure. The current drop size measurements, which fall between those from earlier work, confirm the dependence of drop size on tube diameter. The performance of several drop size correlations have been tested. Because the correlations do not account for the influence of tube diameter, they fail to predict the drop size data accurately. The influence of gas and liquid flow rate on the measured film flow rate show trends similar to those seen in data from the 10 mm and 32 mm diameter tubes. Models, to calculate the entrained liquid mass flux were tested; good predictions were given.  相似文献

Gas–solid momentum transfer is a fundamental problem that is characterized by the dependence of normalized average fluid–particle force F on solid volume fraction ? and the Reynolds number based on the mean slip velocity Rem. In this work we report particle-resolved direct numerical simulation (DNS) results of interphase momentum transfer in flow past fixed random assemblies of monodisperse spheres with finite fluid inertia using a continuum Navier–Stokes solver. This solver is based on a new formulation we refer to as the Particle-resolved Uncontaminated-fluid Reconcilable Immersed Boundary Method (PUReIBM). The principal advantage of this formulation is that the fluid stress at the particle surface is calculated directly from the flow solution (velocity and pressure fields), which when integrated over the surfaces of all particles yields the average fluid–particle force. We demonstrate that PUReIBM is a consistent numerical method to study gas–solid flow because it results in a force density on particle surfaces that is reconcilable with the averaged two-fluid theory. The numerical convergence and accuracy of PUReIBM are established through a comprehensive suite of validation tests. The normalized average fluid–particle force F is obtained as a function of solid volume fraction ? (0.1 ? ? ? 0.5) and mean flow Reynolds number Rem (0.01 ? Rem ? 300) for random assemblies of monodisperse spheres. These results extend previously reported results of  and  to a wider range of ?, Rem, and are more accurate than those reported by Beetstra et al. (2007). Differences between the drag values obtained from PUReIBM and the drag correlation of Beetstra et al. (2007) are as high as 30% for Rem in the range 100–300. We take advantage of PUReIBM’s ability to directly calculate the relative contributions of pressure and viscous stress to the total fluid–particle force, which is useful in developing drag correlations. Using a scaling argument, Hill et al. (2001b) proposed that the viscous contribution is independent of Rem but the pressure contribution is linear in Rem (for Rem > 50). However, from PUReIBM simulations we find that the viscous contribution is not independent of the mean flow Reynolds number, although the pressure contribution does indeed vary linearly with Rem in accord with the analysis of Hill et al. (2001b). An improved correlation for F in terms of ? and Rem is proposed that corrects the existing correlations in Rem range 100–300. Since this drag correlation has been inferred from simulations of fixed particle assemblies, it does not include the effect of mobility of the particles. However, the fixed-bed simulation approach is a good approximation for high Stokes number particles, which are encountered in most gas–solid flows. This improved drag correlation can be used in CFD simulations of fluidized beds that solve the average two-fluid equations where the accuracy of the drag law affects the prediction of overall flow behavior.  相似文献

Gas–liquid slug flow occurs over a wide range of phase flow rates and in a variety of practical applications during gas–liquid two-phase flows. The range of slug flow increases further in narrow pipes (<0.0254 m), undulated pipelines, riser tube, etc. On the other hand, the past literature shows that slug flow is rarely observed for liquid–liquid cases. In the present study, an interest was felt to investigate whether liquid–liquid slug flow occurs in situations known for excessive slugging in gas–liquid cases. For this, experiments have been performed in narrow (0.012 m ID) vertical and horizontal pipes and an undulated pipeline of 0.0254 m internal diameter where the V-shaped undulation comprises of an uphill and a downhill section between two horizontal pipes. The studies have been performed for both peak and valley orientation of the undulation. Kerosene and water have been selected as the test fluids and the optical probe technique has been used to supplement visual observations especially at higher flow rates. The studies have revealed the existence of the slug flow pattern over a wide range of phase flow rates in all the three geometries. Interestingly, it has been noted that the introduction of an undulation induces flow patterns which bear a closer resemblance to gas–liquid flows as compared to liquid–liquid flows through a horizontal pipe of 0.0254 m diameter.  相似文献

Two models are presented for predicting magnetohydrodynamic pressure drop in two phase gas—liquid flows of conducting fluids for large values of Hartmann number. The first of these models treats the gas—liquid mixture as a single homogeneous pseudofluid with averaged mixture properties. The second model assumes that the flow pattern is one where the liquid is displaced to the duct walls as a liquid film and the gas flows in the central core. It is shown that the two models do not differ significantly in their predictions of overall pressure drop for vaporising two-phase flow of potassium. There is little experimental data available for testing the models but very satisfactory agreement is found between measurements of magnetic pressure drop of NaK—nitrogen mixtures at low quality and the predictions of both models.  相似文献

Despite the importance of air–oil slug flows to many industrial applications, their available data reported in the literature are limited compared to air–water slug flows. The main objective of the present study is to explain how air–oil slug flow parameters can be experimentally investigated using hot-film anemometry, capacitance sensors and image processing. Experiments were performed using air–oil slug flow through a horizontal pipe for air superficial velocities ranged from 0.01 m/s to 0.65 m/s and oil superficial velocities ranged from 0.03 m/s to 2.3 m/s. The signal obtained from the hot-film anemometer was used to determine the time-averaged local void fraction and liquid velocity and turbulence intensity for air–oil slug flow. The capacitance signals along with the data obtained by image processing of the flow were used to determine the elongated bubble length and velocity. The measurements techniques used found to describe in detail the internal structure of the slug flow. Finally, the experimental results were compared to existing models and correlations.  相似文献

Extensive experimental data on the birefringence in converging and diverging flows of a polymeric melt have been obtained. The birefringence and pressure drop measurements were carried out in working cells of planar geometry having different contraction angles and contraction ratios. For investigation of diverging or abrupt expansion flow, the direction of flow in the cells was reversed. The theoretical predictions are based upon the Leonov constitutive equation and a finite element scheme with streamwise integration. In contrast to Newtonian and second-order fluids, viscoelastic fluids at high shear rates show significant differences in pressure drop and birefringence (i.e. stresses) in converging and diverging flows. For a constant flow rate, the pressure drop is higher and the birefringence smaller in diverging flows than in converging flows. This difference increases with increasing flow rate. Further, for the same contraction ratio but different contraction angles, the birefringence maximum increases considerably with contraction angle. In addition, an increase in contraction ratio has the same effect. The viscoelastic constitutive equation of Leonov has been shown to describe all the above viscoelastic effects observed in the experiments. In general, a reasonable agreement between theory and experiment has been obtained, which shows the usefulness of the Leonov model in describing actual flows.  相似文献

Immiscible viscous liquid–liquid two-phase flow patterns and pressure drop characteristics in a circular microchannel have been investigated. Water and silicone oil with a dynamic viscosity of 863 mPa s were injected into a fused silica microchannel with an inner diameter of 250 μm. As the microchannel was initially filled with the silicone oil, an oil film was found to always form and remain on the microchannel wall. Different flow patterns were observed and classified over a wide range of water and oil flow rates. A flow pattern map is presented in terms of Re, Ca, and We numbers. Two-phase pressure drop data have also been collected and analyzed to develop a simple correlation for slug, annular and annular-droplet flow patterns in terms of superficial water and oil velocities.  相似文献

Subcooled flow boiling heat transfer for refrigerant R-134a in vertical cylindrical tubes with 0.83, 1.22 and 1.70 mm internal diameter was experimentally investigated. The effects of the heat flux, q″ = 1–26 kW/m2, mass flux, G = 300–700 kg/m2 s, inlet subcooling, ΔTsub,i = 5–15 °C, system pressure, P = 7.70–10.17 bar, and channel diameter, D, on the subcooled boiling heat transfer were explored in detail. The results are presented in the form of boiling curves and heat transfer coefficients. The boiling curves evidenced the existence of hysteresis when increasing the heat flux until the onset of nucleate boiling, ONB. The wall superheat at ONB was found to be essentially higher than that predicted with correlations for larger tubes. An increase of the mass flux leads, for early subcooled boiling, to an increase in the heat transfer coefficient. However, for fully developed subcooled boiling, increases of the mass flux only result in a slight improvement of the heat transfer. Higher inlet subcooling, higher system pressure and smaller channel diameter lead to better boiling heat transfer. Experimental heat transfer coefficients are compared to predictions from classical correlations available in the literature. None of them predicts the experimental data for all tested conditions.  相似文献

In order to properly design and safely operate two-phase flow systems, especially those deployed on future space missions, it is necessary to have accurate predictive capabilities. The application of a novel predictive method, the interfacial area transport equation (IATE), to dynamically predict the change of interfacial area concentration for reduced-gravity two-phase flows is described in this paper. Fluid particle interaction mechanisms such as coalescence and breakup that are present in reduced-gravity two-phase flows have been studied experimentally as reported in a previous paper by the current authors [Vasavada et al., 2007]. These mechanisms represent the source and sink terms in the IATE and their mechanistic models are benchmarked using experimental data obtained in a 25 mm inner diameter ground-based test section wherein reduced-gravity conditions were simulated. The comparison of the predictions from the model against experimental data shows good agreement. It has been found that, in contrast to the hypothesis extended in the literature, the wake entrainment based coalescence mechanism is present in reduced-gravity two-phase flows and in some cases is more important than coalescence due to random collision. Physics based arguments are extended to support this conclusion.  相似文献

Gamma densitometry is a frequently used non-intrusive method for measuring component volume fractions in multiphase flow systems. The application of a single-beam gamma densitometer to investigate oil–water flow in horizontal and slightly inclined pipes is presented. The experiments are performed in a 15 m long, 56 mm diameter, inclinable stainless steel pipe using Exxsol D60 oil (viscosity 1.64 mPa s, density 790 kg/m3) and water (viscosity 1.0 mPa s, density 996 kg/m3) as test fluids. The test pipe inclination is changed in the range from 5° upward to 5° downward. Experimental measurements are reported at three different mixture velocities, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 m/s, and the inlet water cut is varied from 0 to 1. The gamma densitometer is composed of radioactive isotope of Am-241 with the emission energy of 59.5 keV, scintillation detector [NaI(Tl)] and signal processing system. The time averaged cross-sectional distributions of oil and water phases are measured by traversing the gamma densitometer along the vertical pipe diameter. Based on water volume fraction measurements, water hold-up and slip ratio are estimated. The total pressure drop over the test section is measured and frictional pressure drop is estimated based on water hold-up measurements. The measurement uncertainties associated with gamma densitometry are also discussed. The measured water hold-up and slip ratio profiles are strongly dependent on pipe inclination. In general, higher water hold-up values are observed in upwardly inclined pipes compared to the horizontal and downwardly inclined pipes. At low mixture velocities, the slip ratio decreases as the water cut increases. The decrease is more significant as the degree of inclination increases. The frictional pressure drop for upward flow is slightly higher than the horizontal flow. In general, there is a marginal difference in frictional pressure drop values for horizontal and downwardly inclined flows.  相似文献

In this work, co-current flow characteristics of air/non-Newtonian liquid systems in inclined smooth pipes are studied experimentally and theoretically using transparent tubes of 20, 40 and 60 mm in diameter. Each tube includes two 10 m long pipe branches connected by a U-bend that is capable of being inclined to any angle, from a completely horizontal to a fully vertical position. The flow rate of each phase is varied over a wide range. The studied flow phenomena are bubbly flow, stratified flow, plug flow, slug flow, churn flow and annular flow. These are observed and recorded by a high-speed camera over a wide range of operating conditions. The effects of the liquid phase properties, the inclination angle and the pipe diameter on two-phase flow characteristics are systematically studied. The Heywood–Charles model for horizontal flow was modified to accommodate stratified flow in inclined pipes, taking into account the average void fraction and pressure drop of the mixture flow of a gas/non-Newtonian liquid. The pressure drop gradient model of Taitel and Barnea for a gas/Newtonian liquid slug flow was extended to include liquids possessing shear-thinning flow behaviour in inclined pipes. The comparison of the predicted values with the experimental data shows that the models presented here provide a reasonable estimate of the average void fraction and the corresponding pressure drop for the mixture flow of a gas/non-Newtonian liquid.  相似文献

The effect of oil and water velocities, pipe diameter and oil viscosity on the transition from stratified to non-stratified patterns was studied experimentally in horizontal oil-water flow. The investigations were carried out in a horizontal acrylic test section with 25.4 and 19 mm ID with water and two oil viscosities (6.4 and 12 cP) as test fluids. A high-speed video camera was used to study the flow structures and the transition. At certain oil velocity, stratified flow was found to transform into bubbly and dual continuous flows as superficial water velocity increased for both pipe diameters using the 12 cP oil viscosity. The transition to bubbly flow was found to disappear when the 6.4 cP oil viscosity was used in the 25.4 mm pipe. This was due to the low E?tv?s number. Transition to dual continuous flow occurred at lower water velocity for oil velocity up 0.21 m/s when 6.4 cP oil was used in the 25.4 mm ID pipe, while for Uso > 0.21 m/s, the transition appeared at lower water velocity with the 12 cP oil.The effect of pipe diameter was also found to influence the transition between stratified and non-stratified flows. At certain superficial oil velocity, the water velocity required to form bubbly flow increased as the pipe diameter increased while the water velocity required for drop formation decreased as the pipe diameter increased. The maximum wave amplitude was found to grow exponentially with respect to the mixture velocity. The experimental maximum amplitudes at the transition to non-stratified flow agreed reasonably well with the critical amplitude model. Finally, it was found that none of the available models were able to predict the present experimental data at the transition from stratified to non-stratified flow.  相似文献

Two-phase pressure drop measurements were taken for air/water mixtures in a 0.052-m diameter horizontal pipe with special focus on the superficial liquid velocity range of 0.03–1.2 m/s at superficial gas velocities of 3.8, 5.2, and 6.6 m/s. It was found that the addition of 400 ppm of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to the water reduced the pressure drop by 25–40% when compared to equal flow rates without SDS. The pressure drop reduction occurred where the SDS eliminated the occurrence of the intermittent flow present with water. It was also found that the same concentration of SDS had virtually no effect on single phase liquid pressure drop. The pressure drop reduction appears to be due solely to the suppression of intermittent flow patterns.  相似文献
