The rheological properties of a series of lightly crosslinked carboxy copolymers in aqueous solutions have been evaluated in steady shear and dynamic oscillatory modes. Viscosity profiles and the behavior of storage modulus are related to the chemical composition of the copolymers and their crosslinking density. A maximum in viscosity and in storage modulus which depends on the type of crosslinking agent used is explained by a combination of a chain entanglement mechanism and a closely-packed spheres model. The recovery of viscosity and storage modulus after shearing is very fast and is related to the very fast rearrangement of the microgel structure as a function of time.  相似文献

Viscosity, modulus, and yield stress for 0–6 wt% aqueous solutions of Carbopol 941 were investigated using constant shear rate, constant shear stress, and dynamic oscillatory experiments. The microgel character of the polymer was evident from the solid-like behavior of the solutions above 1 wt%. Yield stress increased with concentration, but yield occurred at a critical shear strain of 40%, independent of concentration. The static stress-strain relationship became non-linear at ~ 25% strain, in fair agreement with the onset of non-linear response in the storage modulus at ~ 10% strain. Small strain moduli from static and low frequency measurements agreed rather well; modulus values obtained from the recoverable strain after yielding were 30–40% smaller. Solutions flowed at near-constant stress in the low shear rate regime; at higher rates the stress increases with shear rate more rapidly. The viscosity did not obey the Cox-Merz rule. Steady-state viscosity scaled with polymer concentration to the 3/4 power. Results were interpreted using a cellular, deformable sphere model for the polymer, in analogy to emulsions and foams.  相似文献

Using a power-law ansatz for the temperature dependence of the shear modulus on the level of internal variables, the thermorheological behavior is modeled for viscoelastic fluids of a special group of rheological constitutive equations (rate-type models). The model parameter introduced characterizes thermoelastic contributions. The relation between the model parameter and the physical quantities appearing in deformation processes is discussed. Based on the chosen temperature dependence of the shear modulus, thermodynamically consistent equations like the nonlinear rheological constitutive equation and the temperature equation are derived. The special cases of entirely entropy and energy elastic fluids are also considered. The thermorheological behavior (exo-, - or endothermal processes) of a viscoelastic fluid in a stress-growth experiment followed by relaxation is analyzed with respect to the model parameter.  相似文献

It is shown that extended irreversible thermodynamics can be used to account for the shear rate and frequency dependences of several material functions like shear viscosity, first and second normal stress coefficients, dynamic viscosity and storage modulus. Comparison with experimental data on steady shearing and small oscillatory shearing flows is performed. A good agreement between the model and experiment is reached in a wide scale of variation of the shear rate and the frequency of oscillations. The relation between the present model which includes quadratic terms in the pressure tensor and the Giesekus model is also examined.  相似文献

Model composites of spherical glass particles dispersed in a matrix of high density polyethylene were prepared both with and without interfacial modification by an azidofunctional trialkoxysilane. Dynamic mechanical measurements of the composites in the melt state were recorded. The unmodified composites behave as theoretically predicted and the effect of particle—particle interaction at high volume fractions can be measured. The composites with a modified interfacial region have greater shear moduli due to the effect of a region surrounding the particle modified by the silane. The material in this region is largely bound to the glass surface and was examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy after extraction of the bulk matrix. Theoretical calculations are shown to be useful in calculating the mechanical properties and volume fraction of the interfacial region.  相似文献

A theory of extrudate swell for short, intermediate or long dies is presented. In our experiment, we consider that the swelling phenomenon is mainly due to the recoverable elongational strain induced by the converging flow at the die entrance, as well as by recoverable shear strain originating within the die. From these concepts, an equation has been derived for the quantitative prediction of extrudate swell from the elastic material properties such as the entrance pressure drop, the relaxation modulus and the recoverable shear strain. Excellent agreement is found between predicted and measured values of extrudate swell obtained on commercial polystyrene melt, using capillaries of length-to-diameter ratios ranging from 1 to 20 and in a wide range of shear rates.  相似文献

The rheological properties of rennet-induced skim milk gels were determined by two methods, i.e., via stress relaxation and dynamic tests. The stress relaxation modulusG c (t) was calculated from the dynamic moduliG andG by using a simple approximation formula and by means of a more complex procedure, via calculation of the relaxation spectrum. Either calculation method gave the same results forG c (t). The magnitude of the relaxation modulus obtained from the stress relaxation experiments was 10% to 20% lower than that calculated from the dynamic tests.Rennet-induced skim milk gels did not show an equilibrium modulus. An increase in temperature in the range from 20° to 35 °C resulted in lower moduli at a given time scale and faster relaxation. Dynamic measurements were also performed on acid-induced skim milk gels at various temperatures andG c (t) was calculated. The moduli of the acid-induced gels were higher than those of the rennet-induced gels and a kind of permanent network seemed to exist, also at higher temperatures. Kinetic theory of dilute macromolecular solutions is applied to pressure driven flow in a small channel where wall- (and interfacial) layers have to be reckoned with. The complete rheology is studied. It turns out that for very small channels both the shear stress and the normal stress are an order of magnitude larger than corresponding quantities in simple shear. On the other hand, when the channel is so wide that the wall layers are very thin in comparison, agreement with results appropriate for simple shear is found. The volume flow rate-pressure difference relation is derived and compared to the prediction which utilizes the slip velocity concept. For very small channels, this concept is five orders of magnitude off, but reproduces asymptotically correct results for very large channels.  相似文献

A new and accurate relationship for the shear modulus in the fiber direction of unidirectional fiber composites is derived, based on the Kerner model concepts but not using its approximate relationships. Furthermore, this model is extended by taking into account the mesophase between the fiber and the matrix accomodating smoothly the mechanical properties between neighbouring phases. The introduction of the mesophase results in an improvement of the theoretical predictions, which now approach close to experimental values for the moduli of different fibrous composites.  相似文献

Based on the Cox-Merz rule and Eyring's expression for the nonlinear shear viscosity, a Wagner-type constitutive relation with no nontrivial adjustable parameters is proposed for simple shear viscoelasticity. The predictions for a number of non-steady shear flows are worked out analytically. It is shown that most features of shear viscoelasticity are reproduced by the model.  相似文献

The orthogonal superposition of small and large amplitude oscillations upon steady shear flow of elastic fluids has been considered. Theoretical results, obtained by numerical methods, are based on the Leonov viscoelastic constitutive equation. Steady-state components, amplitudes and phase angles of the oscillatory components of the shear stress, the first and second normal stress differences as functions of shear rate, deformation amplitude and frequency have been calculated. These oscillatory components include the first and third harmonic of the shear stresses and the second harmonic of the normal stresses. In the case of small amplitude superposition, the effect of the steady shear flow upon the frequency-dependent storage modulus and dynamic viscosity has been determined and compared with experimental data available in literature for polymeric solutions. The predicted results have been found to be in fair agreement with the experimental data at low shear rates and only in qualitative agreement at high shear rates and low frequencies. A comparison of the present theoretical results has also been made with the predictions of other theories. In the case of large amplitude superposition, the effect of oscillations upon the steady shear flow characteristics has been determined, indicating that the orthogonal superposition has less influence on the steady state shear stresses and the first difference of normal stresses than the parallel superposition. However, in the orthogonal superposition a more pronounced influence has been observed for the second difference of normal stresses.  相似文献

Starting from an analysis of the rheological behavior of the complex modulus predicted by the Cole-Cole formalism, a generalized Cole-Cole ansatz is suggested in order to overcome the related difficulties. The corresponding rheological constitutive equation with fractional derivatives belonging to the generalized Cole-Cole respondance is stated and the characteristic material functions of the linear viscoelasticity theory (like the dynamic modulus and compliance, the relaxation and ratardation functions, the spectra, etc.) are derived. Model predictions of these functions will be compared with experimental results from dynamical measurements and creep data on different polymer systems which show cooperative phenomena (polymeric glasses and gelling systems). One can see that the modified ansatz fits the data very well, in spite of its relative simplicity.  相似文献

The experimental properties of different polymer melts, polystyrene, high density polyethylene and low density polyethylene are compared for the first time in three different deformations: step shear, step biaxial extension and steady uniaxial extension. Properties of three other melts are also studied in step biaxial and shear experiments. For our comparative purposes some data of Laun and Winter from the literature are used, as well as new data reported here. In all the step strain experiments, the stresses can be factored into a time dependent relaxation modulus and a strain dependent damping function. The data are interpreted using a differential constitutive equation of Larson which satisfies this time-strain separability and has a single parameter that describes the strain softening character of the material. Results show that differences in the properties of the melts are most pronounced in uniaxial extension and least in biaxial extension. All melts follow the Doi-Edwards prediction relatively closely in biaxial extension. In uniaxial extension, the branched material shows a strong strain hardening effect although its shear and biaxial properties are similar to the other melts. The constitutive model gives a reasonably good fit to the data in all three deformations for unbranched materials for the same value of the adjustable parameter; the model, however, fails for the branched low density polyethylene.  相似文献

In dynamic rheological experiments melt behavior is usually expressed in terms of complex viscosity * () or complex modulusG * (). In contrast, we attempted to use the complex fluidity * () = 1/µ * () to represent this behavior. The main interest is to simplify the complex-plane diagram and to simplify the determination of fundamental parameters such as the Newtonian viscosity or the parameter of relaxation-time distribution when a Cole-Cole type distribution can be applied. * () complex shear viscosity - () real part of the complex viscosity - () imaginary part of the complex viscosity - G * () complex shear modulus - G() storage modulus in shear - G() loss modulus in shear - J * () complex shear compliance - J() storage compliance in shear - J() loss compliance in shear - shear strain - rate of strain - angular frequency (rad/s) - shear stress - loss angle - * () complex shear fluidity - () real part of the complex fluidity - () imaginary part of the complex fluidity - 0 zero-viscosity - 0 average relaxation time - h parameter of relaxation-time distribution  相似文献

The rheological behavior of stable slurries is shown to be characterized by a bimodal model that represents a slurry as made up of a coarse fraction and a colloidal size fine fraction. According to the model, the two fractions behave independently of each other, and the non-Newtonian behavior of the viscosity is solely caused by the colloidal fraction, while the coarse fraction increases the viscosity level through hydrodynamic interactions. Data from experiments run with colloidal coal particles of about 2–3 µm average size dispersed in water show the viscosity of these colloidal suspensions to exhibit a highly shearrate-dependent behavior and, in the high shear limit, to match very closely the viscosity of suspensions of uniform size rigid spheres although the coal volume fraction must be determined semi-empirically. Different amounts of coarse coal particles are added to the colloidal suspension and the viscosity of the truly bimodal slurries measured as a function of shear rate. In agreement with the bimodal model, the measured shear viscosities show the coarse fraction to behave independently of the colloidal fraction and its contribution to the viscosity rise to be independent of the shear rate. It is shown that the shear rate exerted on the colloidal fraction is higher than that applied by the viscometer as a result of hydrodynamic interactions between the coarse particles, and that it is this effective higher shear rate which is necessary to apply in the correlations. For determining the coal volume fraction a relatively simple and quite accurate measurement technique is developed for determining the density and void fraction of coarse porous particles; the technique directly relates volume fraction to mass fraction.  相似文献

A new relation for the prediction of the transverse shear modulus in unidirectional fiber composites has been derived. The theoretical results of this relationship are in better agreement with the experiments than those of other relations, existing in the literature. The discrepancies, which are observed among the theoretical predictions and the experimental values, are explained by the consideration of the boundary layers existing between the matrix and the fibers of the composite. A new model, which includes the intermediate phase between the matrix and the fiber, called the mesophase, is considered in order to take into account the above-mentioned layers.  相似文献

The complex viscosity of microemulsions shows relaxation processes of which the largest relaxation time is about 10–5 s or less. This time can be attributed to relaxation of stresses in the surface of emulsion droplets pertaining to interfacial tension. Superimposed on a spherical droplet surface shape fluctuations can occur due to thermal energies. Our aim is to show the influence of thermal shape fluctuations on the complex viscosity of emulsions. The method used in the derivation has also been applied to inflexible rods to demonstrate its feasibility by showing the formal rheological equivalence of in length thermally fluctuating rods and Rouse's simple model of polymers. The emulsion results have been applied to a dilution series of a non-ionic microemulsion.  相似文献

Streaming of a non-Newtonian fluid around a sphere is of special importance not only for measuring viscosities with falling spheres, but also for many problems connected with polymer processing. Using the mentioned measuring principle, attention has to be paid to the following points: The sphere is moving in a fluid (melt) of finite extension which requires the application of wall and perhaps end corrections. These are possibly not the same for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. To calculate the viscosity with the help of Stokes law the steady-state velocity is necessary, and it is essential, how long it takes the sphere to reach it. To compare our results with other data, an average shear rate has to be calculated, since there is no uniform shear rate around the sphere. Velocities being very low in our experiments result in very small Reynolds numbers (Re < 10–3), which allows the application of Stokes law practically without corrections. The experiments were performed at zero shear and in the transition region above. It turned out, that it is usually not possible to extrapolate from shear-dependent viscosity data to zero-shear viscosity.Dedicated to Prof. A. Neckel on the occasion of his 60th birthday  相似文献

Superposition of oscillatory shear imposed from the boundary and through pressure gradient oscillations and simple shear is investigated. The integral fluid with fading memory shows flow enhancement effects due to the nonlinear structure. Closed-form expressions for the change in the mass transport rate are given at the lowest significant order in the perturbation algorithm. The elasticity of the liquid plays as important a role in determining the enhancement as does the shear dependent viscosity. Coupling of shear thinning and elasticity may produce sharp increases in the flow rate. The interaction of oscillatory shear components may generate a steady flow, either longitudinal or orthogonal, resulting in increases in flow rates akin to resonance, and due to frequency cancellation, even in the absence of a mean gradient. An algorithm to determine the constitutive functions of the integral fluid of order three is outlined.Nomenclature A n Rivlin-Ericksen tensor of order . - A k Non-oscillatory component of the first order linear viscoelastic oscillatory velocity field induced by the kth wave in the pressure gradient - d Half the gap between the plates - e x, e z Unit vectors in the longitudinal and orthogonal directions, respectively - G(s) Relaxation modulus - G History of the deformation - Stress response functional - I() Enhancement defined as the ratio of the frequency dependent part of the discharge to the frequencyindependent part of it at the third order - I *() Enhancement defined as the ratio of the increase in discharge due to oscillations to the total discharge without the oscillations - k Power index in the relaxation modulus G(s) - k i –1 Relaxation times in the Maxwell representation of the quadratic shear relaxation modulus (s 1, s 2) - m i –1, n i –1 Relaxation times in the Maxwell representations of the constitutive functions 1(s 1,s 2,s 3) and 4 (s 1, s 2,s 3), respectively - P Constant longitudinal pressure gradient - p Pressure field - mx ,(3) nz ,(3) Mean volume transport rates at the third order in the longitudinal and orthogonal directions, respectively - 0,(3), 1,(3) Frequency independent and dependent volume transport rates, respectively, at the third order - s = t- Difference between present and past times t and   相似文献
