Background

Image-based global correlation involves a class of ill-posed inverse problems associated with speckle quality and deformation gradients on specimen surfaces. However, the method used to simultaneously integrate the prior information related to images and deformations and effectively regularize these inverse problems still faces severe challenges, especially when complex heterogeneous deformation gradients exist over sample surfaces with locally degraded speckle patterns.

Objective

We propose a novel self-adaptive meshing-based regularization for global image correlation to determine spatially complex heterogeneous deformations.

Methods

A virtual truss system with a linearly elastic constitutive relationship is employed to self-adaptively implement surface meshing by numerically balancing the exerted virtual forces under the constraints of the local speckle image quality and deformation gradients. The 2-norm-based condition number of the local stiffness matrix is introduced to ensure numerical stability during meshing.

Results

The algorithms can behave as a smart regularization procedure integrating all the prior information during numerical calculations, consequently achieving an accurate, precise and robust characterization of heterogeneous deformations, as demonstrated by virtual simulations and actual experiments.

Conclusions

The regularization strategy coupled to image-based correlation is also promising for automatic quantification of complex heterogeneous deformations, particularly from images with locally degraded speckle patterns.

Background

Developments in digital image correlation (DIC) in the last decade have made it a practical and effective optical technique for displacement and strain measurement at high temperatures.

Objective

This overview aims to review the research progress, summarize the experience and provide valuable references for the high-temperature deformation measurement using DIC.

Methods

We comprehensively summarize challenges and recent advances in high-temperature DIC techniques.

Results

Fundamental principles of high-temperature DIC and various approaches to generate thermal environment or apply thermal loading are briefly introduced first. Then, the three primary challenges presented in performing high-temperature DIC measurements, i.e., 1). image saturation caused by intensified thermal radiation of heated sample and surrounding heating elements, 2) image contrast reduction due to surface oxidation of the heated sample and speckle pattern debonding, and 3) image distortion due to heat haze between the sample and the heating source, and corresponding countermeasures (i.e., the suppression of thermal radiation, fabrication of high-temperature speckle pattern and mitigation of heat haze) are discussed in detail. Next, typical applications of high-temperature DIC at various spatial scales are briefly described. Finally, remaining unsolved problems and future goals in high-temperature deformation measurements using DIC are also provided.

Conclusions

We expect this review can guide to build a suitable DIC system for kinematic field measurements at high temperatures and solve the challenging problems that may be encountered during real tests.

Background

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is a length scale independent surface pattern matching and tracking algorithm capable of providing full field deformation measurements. The confident registration of this pattern within the imaging system becomes key to the derived results. Practically, conventional speckling methods use non-reliable, non-repeatable patterning methodologies including spray paints and air brushing leading to increased systematic and random errors based on the user’s experience.

Objective

A methodology to develop a speckle pattern tailored to the imaging and experimental conditions of the given system is developed in this paper.

Methods

In this context, a novel bio-inspired speckle pattern development technique is introduced, leveraging spatial imaging parameters in addition to frequency characteristics of speckle patterns, enhancing the results obtained through DIC. This novel technique leverages gradient parameters in the frequency spectrum obtained from patterns fabricated using a bio-templating manufacturing technique.

Results

The analysis presented shows that optimized gradient features alongside tailored spatial characteristics reduce errors while increasing the usefulness of DIC results across the entire region of interest. With this new approach, gradient information is derived from the bio-templated pattern, extracted, optimized and then convolved with spatial properties of a numerically generated 2D point clouds which can then be transferred onto actual specimens. Numerical error analysis shows that the optimized patterns result in significant reduction in root mean square error compared to conventional speckling methods.

Conclusions

Physical experiments show the scalability of this optimized pattern to allow for varying working distances while consistently maintaining a lower error threshold compared to conventional speckling techniques.

Background

Soft tribology is increasingly important in the design and engineering of materials used in robotics, haptics, and biomechanics studies. When patterned surfaces are part of a lubricated tribopair that undergoes sliding and compressive deformation, the patterns experience a bending strain that affects the lubrication film thickness and elastohydrodynamic friction. The contribution of bending patterns to soft tribology is not well understood because earlier studies focused on hard tribopairs with effectively flat surfaces.

Objective

We investigate and model the differences in lubricated friction for poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) elastomer and PEGDA/alginate double network hydrogel patterns in order to determine the effect of height-to-width aspect ratio and bending angle on the elastohydrodynamic friction.

Methods

Photoresists of two different viscosities are spin coated onto silicon substrates to fabricate molds with pattern heights ranging from 20 μm to 50 μm.

Results

Tribological characterization of the tribopairs in the elastohydrodynamic lubrication regime shows that the patterns generate a friction peak that is independent of aspect ratio for short patterns but displays a “power-law fit” decrease with increasing aspect ratio for taller patterns. Two independent models are used to estimate the theoretical bending and deflection angles for the tribopairs.

Conclusions

The decrease in lubricated friction is attributed to taller patterns having large bending angles and a reduced effective surface for fluid load bearing. Results suggest that the bending of micropatterns could be harnessed to engineer lubricated friction in a variety of applications.

Background

The mechanical stimulus (i.e., stress or stretch) for growth occurring in the pressure-overloaded left ventricle (LV) is not exactly known.

Objective

To address this issue, we investigate the correlation between local ventricular growth (indexed by local wall thickness) and the local acute changes in mechanical stimuli after aortic banding.

Methods

LV geometric data were extracted from 3D echo measurements at baseline and 2 weeks in the aortic banding swine model (n?=?4). We developed and calibrated animal-specific finite element (FE) model of LV mechanics against pressure and volume waveforms measured at baseline. After simulation of the acute effects of pressure-overload, the local changes of maximum, mean and minimum myocardial stretches and stresses in three orthogonal material directions (i.e., fiber, sheet and sheet-normal) over a cardiac cycle were quantified. Correlation between mechanical quantities and the corresponding measured local changes in wall thickness was quantified using the Pearson correlation number (PCN) and Spearman rank correlation number (SCN).

Results

At 2 weeks after banding, the average septum thickness decreased from 10.6?±?2.92 mm to 9.49?±?2.02 mm, whereas the LV free-wall thickness increased from 8.69?±?1.64 mm to 9.4?±?1.22 mm. The FE results show strong correlation of growth with the changes in maximum fiber stress (PCN?=?0.5471, SCN?=?0.5111) and changes in the mean sheet-normal stress (PCN?=?0.5266, SCN?=?0.5256). Myocardial stretches, however, do not have good correlation with growth.

Conclusion

These results suggest that fiber stress is the mechanical stimuli for LV growth in pressure-overload.

The four-dimensional (4D) printing technology, as a combination of additive manufacturing and smart materials, has attracted increasing research interest in recent years. The bilayer structures printed with smart materials using this technology can realize complicated deformation under some special stimuli due to the material properties. The deformation prediction of bilayer structures can make the design process more rapid and thus is of great importance. However, the previous works on deformation prediction of bilayer structures rarely study the complicated deformations or the influence of the printing process on deformation. Thus, this paper proposes a new method to predict the complicated deformations of temperature-sensitive 4D printed bilayer structures, in particular to the bilayer structures based on temperature-driven shape-memory polymers (SMPs) and fabricated using the fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology. The programming process to the material during printing is revealed and considered in the simulation model. Simulation results are compared with experiments to verify the validity of the method. The advantages of this method are stable convergence and high efficiency, as the three-dimensional (3D) problem is converted to a two-dimensional (2D) problem. The simulation parameters in the model can be further associated with the printing parameters, which shows good application prospect in 4D printed bilayer structure design.

Background

Experimental analyses of the 3D strain field evolution during loading allows for better understanding of deformation and failure mechanisms at the meso- and microscale in different materials. In order to understand the auxetic behaviour and delamination process in paperboard materials during tensile deformation, it is essential to study the out-of-plane component of the strain tensor that is, in contrast to previous 2D studies, only achievable in 3D.

Objective

The main objective of this study is to obtain a better understanding of the influence of different out-of-plane structures and in-plane material directions on the deformation and failure mechanisms at the meso- and microscale in paperboard samples.

Methods

X-ray tomography imaging during in-situ uniaxial tensile testing and Digital Volume Correlation analysis was performed to investigate the 3D strain field evolution and microscale mechanical behaviour in two different types of commercial paperboards and in two material directions. The evolution of sample properties such as the spatial variation in sample thickness, solid fraction and fibre orientation distribution were also obtained from the images. A comprehensive analysis of the full strain tensor in paperboards is lacking in previous research, and the influence of material directions and out-of-plane structures on 3D strain field patterns as well as the spatial and temporal quantification of the auxetic behaviour in paperboard are novel contributions.

Results

The results show that volumetric and deviatoric strain, dominated by the out-of-plane normal strain component of the strain tensor, localize in the out-of-plane centre already in the initial linear stress-strain regime. In-plane strain field patterns differ between samples loaded in the Machine Direction (MD) and Cross Direction (CD); in MD, strain localizes in a more well-defined zone close to the notches and the failure occurs abruptly at peak load, resulting in angular fracture paths extending through the stiffer surface planes of the samples. In CD, strain localizes in more horizontal and continuous bands between the notches and at peak load, fractures are not clearly visible at the surfaces of CD-tested samples that appear to fail internally through more well-distributed delamination.

Conclusions

In-plane strain localization preceded a local increase of sample thickness, i.e. the initiation of the delamination process, and at peak load, a dramatic increase in average sample thickening occurred. Different in-plane material directions affected the angles and continuity of the in-plane strain patterns as well as the sample and fracture properties at failure, while the out-of-plane structure affected how the strain fields distributed within the samples.

Background

Hypertension drives myocardial remodeling, leading to changes in structure, composition and mechanical behavior, including residual stress, which are linked to heart disease progression in a gender-specific manner. Emerging therapies are also targeting constituent-specific pathological features. All previous studies, however, have characterized remodeling in the intact tissue, rather than isolated tissue constituents, and did not include sex as a biological variable.

Objective

In this study we first identified the contribution of collagen fiber network and myocytes to the myocardial residual stress/strain in Dahl-Salt sensitive rats fed with high fat diet. Then, we quantified the effect of hypertension on the remodeling of the left ventricle (LV), as well as the existence of sex-specific remodeling features.

Methods

We performed mechanical tests (opening angle, ring-test) and histological analysis on isolated constituents and intact tissue of the LV. Based on the measurements from the tests, we performed a stress analysis to evaluate the residual stress distribution. Statistical analysis was performed to identify the effects of constituent isolation, elevated blood pressure, and sex of the animal on the experimental measurements and modeling results.

Results

Hypertension leads to reduced residual stress/strain in the intact tissue, isolated collagen fibers, and isolated myocytes in male and female rats. Collagen remains the largest contributor to myocardial residual stress in both normotensive and hypertensive animals. We identified sex-differences in both hypertensive and normotensive animals.

Conclusions

We observed both constituent- and sex-specific remodeling features in the LV of an animal model of hypertension.

Background

Measuring true stress–strain curve over a large-strain-range is essential to understand mechanical behavior and simulate non-linear plastic deformation. The digital image correlation (DIC) technique, a non-contact full-field optical measurement technique, is a promising candidate to obtain a long-range true stress–strain curve experimentally.

Objective

This paper proposes a method for measuring true stress–strain curves over a large-strain-range during tensile testing using DIC.

Methods

The wide-strain-range true stress–strain curves of dual-phase and low carbon steels were extracted on the transverse direction in the neck region. The axial strain on the neck section was estimated by averaging the inhomogeneous deformation on the cross-section of the tensile specimen. The true stress was calculated from the engineering stress and the cross-sectional area of the neck.

Results

The validity of the proposed method was assessed by comparing the experimental load–displacement responses during tensile testing with the finite element method (FEM) simulation results. The stress and strain on the neck section estimated using the FEM and DIC, respectively, were proven to satisfy the uniaxial condition and successfully obtained.

Conclusions

The experimental results agree well with the FEM results. The proposed concept can be applied to various deformation modes for accurately measuring long-range true stress–strain curves.

Background

Optical metrology is widely used to measure materials’ deformation and mechanical properties but current fundamental research requires more precise measurement of microstructure and deformation in internal materials. Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) technique measures crystal orientation in individual grain and high resolution EBSD (HR-EBSD) method provides information about residual strain and GND density.

Objective

Deformation of two stainless steels Nitronic 60 and Tristelle 5183 with different proportions of ferrite and carbides are characterised.

Methods

Push-release bend testing was used to provide progressive increasing bending stress in two iron-based material samples. HR-EBSD and high resolution digital image correlation (HR-DIC) methods characterised residual strain, GND density and plastic strain distributions in each sample.

Results

Nitronic 60 and Tristelle 5183 were deformed and obtained 3.8% and 0.9% plastic strain ?xx. High GND densities distributed neighbouring grain boundaries in Nitronic 60 while high GND densities distributed around carbides, especially intragranular carbides in Tristelle 5183.

Conclusions

HR-EBSD and HR-DIC quantitative characterised deformation in two iron-based alloys, grain/twin boundaries and carbides resulted in GND density increase, promoted work hardening and accumulated high residual elastic strain. Heterogeneous grain/carbide size distribution leaded to stress concentration and cause carbide decohesion and brittle fracture of sample.

Background

Determination of near-surface residual stresses is challenging for the available measurement techniques due to their limitations. These are often either beyond reach or associated with significant uncertainties.

Objective

This study describes a critical comparison between three methods of surface and near-surface residual stress measurements, including x-ray diffraction (XRD) and two incremental central hole-drilling techniques one based on strain-gauge rosette and the other based on electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI).

Methods

These measurements were performed on standard four-point-bend beams of steel loaded to known nominal stresses, according to the ASTM standard. These were to evaluate the sensitivity of different techniques to the variation in the nominal stress, and their associated uncertainties.

Results

The XRD data showed very good correlations with the surface nominal stress, and with superb repeatability and small uncertainties. The results of the ESPI based hole-drilling technique were also in a good agreement with the XRD data and the expected nominal stress. However, those obtained by the strain gauge rosette based hole-drilling technique were not matching well with the data obtained by the other techniques nor with the nominal stress. This was found to be due to the generation of extensive compressive residual stress during surface preparation for strain gauge installation.

Conclusion

The ESPI method is proven to be the most suitable hole-drilling technique for measuring near-surface residual stresses within distances close to the surface that are beyond the penetration depth of x-ray and below the resolution of the strain gauge rosette based hole-drilling method.

Background

High-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF)-sprayed metallic coating can be used to create a surface layer that plays a significant role in enhancing the overall strength, stiffness, and fatigue life of the treated material. The micro-deformation around a single impacted particle is a critical factor that must be considered for the optimization of the HVOF process.

Objective

In this study, the micro-deformation field of stainless steel impacted by a ceramic particle was characterized at the micro-scale.

Method

A grid with a frequency of 1200 lines/mm was fabricated on the surface of stainless steel specimen. The microscopic deformation field formed on the substreate surface, induced by the impact of micro-particles with a diameter of 18 µm, was determined using the electron moiré method and numerical simulations.

Results

The in-plane plastic strain around the impacted particle was found to be as high as 9.1%, and the value sharply decreased with the increase of the distance to the edge of the impacted particle. The diameter of the plastic area was about 40 µm, which was approximately 2.2 times larger than the particle size. The experimental results were compared with numerical simulation results, and good agreement between the results was found.

Conclusions

The electron moiré technique can be a useful tool for the measurement of the deformation field induced by an impacted particle in a very local area with a size on the order of microns.

A shape-memory double network hydrogel consists of two polymer networks: a chemically crosslinked primary network that is responsible for the permanent shape and a physically crosslinked secondary network that is used to fix the temporary shapes. The formation/melting transition of the secondary network serves as an effective mechanism for the double network hydrogel's shape-memory effect. When the crosslinks in the secondary network are dissociated by applying an external stimulus, only the primary network is left to support the load. When the secondary network is re-formed by removing the stimulus, both the primary and secondary networks support the load. In the past, models have been developed for the constitutive behaviors of double network hydrogels, but the model of shape-memory double network hydrogels is still lacking. This work aims to build a constitutive model for the polyacrylamide-gelatin double network shape-memory hydrogel developed in our previous work. The model is first calibrated by experimental data of the double network shape-memory hydrogel under uniaxial loading and then employed to predict the shape-fixing performance of the hydrogel. The model is also implemented into a three-dimension finite element code and utilized to simulate the shape-memory behavior of the double network hydrogel with inhomogeneous deformations related to applications.

A more thorough understanding of the properties of bulk material structures in solid–liquid separation processes is essential to understand better and optimize industrially established processes, such as cake filtration, whose process outcome is mainly dependent on the properties of the bulk material structure. Here, changes of bulk properties like porosity and permeability can originate from local variations in particle size, especially for non-spherical particles. In this study, we mix self-similar fractions of crushed, irregularly shaped Al2O3 particles (20 to 90 µm and 55 to 300 µm) to bimodal distributions. These mixtures vary in volume fraction of fines (0, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 100 vol.%). The self-similarity of both systems serves the improved parameter correlation in the case of multimodal distributed particle systems. We use nondestructive 3D X-ray microscopy to capture the filter cake microstructure directly after mechanical dewatering, whereby we give particular attention to packing structure and particle–particle relationships (porosity, coordination number, particle size and corresponding hydraulic isolated liquid areas). Our results reveal widely varying distributions of local porosity and particle contact points. An average coordination number (here 5.84 to 6.04) is no longer a sufficient measure to describe the significant bulk porosity variation (in our case, 40 and 49%). Therefore, the explanation of the correlation is provided on a discrete particle level. While individual particles?<?90 µm had only two or three contacts, others?>?100 µm took up to 25. Due to this higher local coordination number, the liquid load of corresponding particles (liquid volume/particle volume) after mechanical dewatering increases from 0.48 to 1.47.

Background

Polymer mechanics and characterization is an active area of research where a keen effort is directed towards gaining a predictive and correlative relationship between the applied loads and the specific conformational motions of the macromolecule chains.

Objective

Therefore, the objective of this research is to introduce the preliminary results based on a novel technique to in situ probe the mechanical properties of polymers using non-invasive, non-destructive, and non-contact terahertz spectroscopy.

Methods

A dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) structure is used as the loading mechanism to avoid obscuring the beam path of transmission terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. In DEAs, the applied voltage results in mechanical stresses under the active electrode area with far-reaching stretching in the passive area. Finite element analysis is used to model and simulate the DEA to quantify the induced stresses at the observation site over a voltage range spanning from 0 V to 3000 V. Additionally, a novel analysis technique is introduced based on the Hilbert-Huang transform to exploit the time-domain signals of the ultrathin elastomeric film and to defy the limits set forth by the current state-of-the-art analysis techniques.

Results

The computational result shows a nonlinear relationship between the effective stresses and the applied voltage. Analysis of the terahertz time-domain signals shows a shift in the delay times and a decrease in signal peak amplitudes, whereas these characteristics are implicitly related to the change in the index of refraction.

Conclusions

In all, the results evidentially signify the interrelationship between the conformational changes and applied mechanical stress.

The Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect is closely associated with inhomogeneous deformation, which is characterized by the band of strain localization. In this work, the spatio-temporal dynamics of the Portevin-Le Chatelier deformation bands are investigated by a novel digital speckle pattern metrology technique consisting of digital speckle pattern interferometry (DSPI) and digital speckle correlation (DSC). A series of tension process of a commercial aluminum alloy (A2017) under different imposed strain rates in a range from 10−6 to 10−3 s−1 are monitored in real time with this technique. The formation of the PLC band, the evolution of the band structure and the propagation of the band are visualized and followed by fringe patterns. The distribution of the deformation in the specimen containing the band is measured precisely. It is shown that even for a tensile test, an elastic shrinkage deformation, which is caused by the avalanche-like shearing deformation within the band, occurs outside the band.  相似文献

Background

Digital image correlation (DIC) has advanced to become a flexible, reliable and fast optical method for the measurement of non-contact and full-field surface deformation. However, the accuracy of existing methods in measuring heterogeneous deformation fields—especially for the high gradient strain field – can be improved.

Objective

In state-of-art local DIC applications, several methods have been put forward to adapt a subset to unknown deformation. Although improvements in performance using these methods are obtained, results are still ungratified for severely heterogeneous deformation such as the Star 2 and Star 5 images from DIC Challenge 2.0.

Methods

In this paper, a rotated Gaussian weighted zero-mean normalized sum of squared difference (RGW-ZNSSD) criterion function is proposed as the basis for RGW-DIC subset size adaptation. RGW-DIC can automatically determine the optimum weight distribution, hence self-adaptivity in subset size and orientation are achieved simultaneously.

Results

The effectiveness of the proposed RGW-DIC is verified using DIC-challenge 2.0 images and simulated sinusoidal deformation images. Results reveal that the adaptively determined subset weight distribution can significantly improve the accuracy of heterogeneous deformation measurement compared with traditional DIC and DIC with isotropic Gaussian weight functions.

Conclusions

The proposed RGW-DIC can be applied to unknown severely heterogeneous deformation measurement.

Background

This paper is Part 2 of a study on the scope of the ultrasonic Surface Reflection Method (SRM). Part 1 deals with the theoretical conditions for a satisfactory usage of this method.

Objective

This second part validates the practical feasibility and reliability of the SRM method by comparison with the conventional Transmission Method (TM) in cases where the latter is applicable.

Methods

Two experimental devices (one for SRM and one for TM) are developed and measurements of shear and bulk moduli are carried out at ultrasonic frequency (610 kHz) and at room temperature.

Results

The experimental conditions in terms of sample geometry, pulse characteristics and interfacial transmission required to obtain a given accuracy on the measurement are stated. The SRM is then validated against other experimental methods and is used to determine the shear modulus of a carbon black filled neoprene at ambient temperature (T?=?21 °C) and ultrasonic frequency.

Conclusions

The benefit brought by this method is well demonstrated: a unique measurement allows the determination of all the moduli of a highly damping isotropic material (carbon black filled neoprene) not achievable by other methods.
