We attempt to improve accuracy in the high‐wavenumber region in DNS of incompressible wall turbulence such as found in fully developed turbulent channel flow. In particular, it is shown that the improvement of accuracy of viscous terms in the Navier–Stokes equations leads to the improvement of accuracy of higher‐order statistics and various spectra. It is emphasized that increase in required computational cost will not be crucial when incompressible flow is simulated, because the introduction of a higher‐order scheme into the viscous terms does not increase computational cost for solving the Poisson equation. We introduced fourth‐order and eighth‐order central compact schemes for discretizing the viscous terms in DNS of a fully developed turbulent channel flow. The results are compared with those using second‐order and fourth‐order central‐difference schemes applied to the viscous terms and those obtained by the spectral method. The results show that accuracy improvement of the viscous terms improve accuracy of higher‐order statistics (i.e., skewness and flatness factors of streamwise velocity fluctuation) and various spectra of velocity and pressure fluctuations in the high‐wavenumber region. This paper presents computational solutions for unsteady viscous flows in channels with a downstream-facing step, followed by an oscillating floor. These solutions of the unsteady Navier–Stokes equations are obtained with a time-integration method using artificial compressibility in a fixed computational domain, which is obtained via a time-dependent coordinate transformation from the fluid domain with moving boundaries. The computational method is first validated for steady viscous flows past a downstream-facing step by comparison with previous numerical solutions and experimental results. This method is then used to obtain solutions for unsteady viscous flows with multiple separation regions over a downstream-facing step with oscillating walls, for which there are no previously known solutions. Thus, the present results may be used as benchmark solutions for the unsteady viscous flows with multiple separation regions between fixed and oscillating walls.  相似文献

A finite element method for quasi‐incompressible viscous flows is presented. An equation for pressure is derived from a second‐order time accurate Taylor–Galerkin procedure that combines the mass and the momentum conservation laws. At each time step, once the pressure has been determined, the velocity field is computed solving discretized equations obtained from another second‐order time accurate scheme and a least‐squares minimization of spatial momentum residuals. The terms that stabilize the finite element method (controlling wiggles and circumventing the Babuska–Brezzi condition) arise naturally from the process, rather than being introduced a priori in the variational formulation. A comparison between the present second‐order accurate method and our previous first‐order accurate formulation is shown. The method is also demonstrated in the computation of the leaky‐lid driven cavity flow and in the simulation of a crossflow past a circular cylinder. In both cases, good agreement with previously published experimental and computational results has been obtained. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a novel pressure-based semi-implicit finite volume solver for the equations of compressible ideal, viscous, and resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The new method is conservative for mass, momentum, and total energy, and in multiple space dimensions, it is constructed in such a way as to respect the divergence-free condition of the magnetic field exactly, also in the presence of resistive effects. This is possible via the use of multidimensional Riemann solvers on an appropriately staggered grid for the time evolution of the magnetic field and a double curl formulation of the resistive terms. The new semi-implicit method for the MHD equations proposed here discretizes the nonlinear convective terms as well as the time evolution of the magnetic field explicitly, whereas all terms related to the pressure in the momentum equation and the total energy equation are discretized implicitly, making again use of a properly staggered grid for pressure and velocity. Inserting the discrete momentum equation into the discrete energy equation then yields a mildly nonlinear symmetric and positive definite algebraic system for the pressure as the only unknown, which can be efficiently solved with the (nested) Newton method of Casulli et al. The pressure system becomes linear when the specific internal energy is a linear function of the pressure. The time step of the scheme is restricted by a CFL condition based only on the fluid velocity and the Alfvén wave speed and is not based on the speed of the magnetosonic waves. Being a semi-implicit pressure-based scheme, our new method is therefore particularly well suited for low Mach number flows and for the incompressible limit of the MHD equations, for which it is well known that explicit density-based Godunov-type finite volume solvers become increasingly inefficient and inaccurate because of the more and more stringent CFL condition and the wrong scaling of the numerical viscosity in the incompressible limit. We show a relevant MHD test problem in the low Mach number regime where the new semi-implicit algorithm is a factor of 50 faster than a traditional explicit finite volume method, which is a very significant gain in terms of computational efficiency. However, our numerical results confirm that our new method performs well also for classical MHD test cases with strong shocks. In this sense, our new scheme is a true all Mach number flow solver.  相似文献

In a recent paper [1] it was shown that the evaluation of certain bounding solutions for a structure subjected to cyclic loading was equivalent to assuming that the cycle time Δt was short compared with a stress redistribution time. Comparisons between values which are likely to occur in creep design situations indicated that Δt may often be assumed to be small and the bounding solution may be expected to closely approximate the actual stress history. In this paper the solution for the limiting case when Δt → 0 is evaluated for a class of constitutive relationships which may be expressed in terms of a finite number of state variables. Strain-hardening viscous, visco-elastic and Bailey-Orowan equations are discussed and particular solutions for which the residual stresses remain constant in time are derived. The solution for a non-linear visco-elastic model indicates that, for the stationary cyclic state, the constitutive equation need only predict the creep strain over a discrete number of cycles and need not predict the strains during a cycle. This observation should considerably simplify creep analysis. The solution of a simple example demonstrates the similarity between the predicting of the various constitutive relationships for isothermal problems. In fact they provide virtually identical solutions when expressed in terms of reference stress histories. The finite element solution of a plate containing a hole and subjected to variable edge loading is also presented for a viscous material. The solutions show behaviour which is similar to that of the two bar structure.  相似文献

In a recent study, Ganpule and Khomami (submitted to J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech.) have shown that in order to accurately describe the experimentally observed interfacial instability phenomenon in superposed channel flow of viscoelastic fluids, a constitutive equation that can accurately depict not only the steady viscometric properties of the experimental test fluids, but also their transient viscoelastic properties must be used in the analysis. In the present study, the effect of differences in transient viscoelastic properties which can arise either due to the differences in the predictive capabilities of various constitutive models or from the presence of multiple modes of relaxation on the interfacial instabilities of the superposed pressure driven channel flows has been investigated. Specifically, a linear stability analysis is performed using nonlinear constitutive equations which predict identical steady viscometric properties but different transient viscoelastic properties. It is shown that different nonlinear constitutive equations give rise to the same mechanism of interfacial instability, but the boundaries of the neutral stability contours and the magnitudes of the growth/decay rates, especially at intermediate and shortwaves, are shifted due to the overshoots in the transient viscoelastic responses predicted by the constitutive equations. In addition, the effect of the presence of multiple modes of relaxation on interfacial stability is studied using single and multiple mode upper convected Maxwell (UCM) fluids and it is shown that pronounced differences in the intermediate and shortwave linear stability predictions arise due to the fact that the increase in the number of modes gives rise to additional fast as well as slow relaxation modes and the presence of these additional relaxation modes gives rise to differences in the transient viscoelastic response of the fluids in the absence of any overshoots. The effect of fluid inertia on the interfacial stability of viscoelastic liquids is examined and it is shown that at longwaves, inertia has a pronounced effect on the stability of the interface, whereas at shortwaves, elastic and viscous effects dominate. Furthermore, the mechanism of viscoelastic interfacial instabilities is studied by a careful examination of disturbance eigenfunctions as well as performing a disturbance energy analysis. The results indicate that the mechanism of viscoelastic interfacial instabilities can be described in terms of interaction of mechanisms of purely viscous and purely elastic instabilities. However, since more than one mechanism for the instability is at work, the disturbance energy analysis can not clearly distinguish between them due to the fact that the eigenfunctions used in the energy analysis contain the information regarding both viscous and elastic effects. Hence, the mechanism of the instability must be determined by a careful examination of disturbance eigenfunctions.  相似文献

The response of a slender, clastic, cantilevered beam to a transverse, vertical, harmonic excitation is investigated. The effects of nonlinear curvature, nonlinear inertia, viscous damping and static load are included. Previous work often has neglected the static deflection caused by the weight of the beam, which adds quadratic terms in the governing equations of motion. Galerkin's method is used with three modes and approximate solutions of the temporal equations are obtained by the method of multiple scales. Primary resonance is treated here, and out-of-plane motion is possible in the first and second modes when the principal moments of inertia of the beam cross-section are approximately equal. In Parts II and III, secondary resonances and nonstationary passages through various resonances are considered.  相似文献

This paper presents a stabilized extended finite element method (XFEM) based fluid formulation to embed arbitrary fluid patches into a fixed background fluid mesh. The new approach is highly beneficial when it comes to computational grid generation for complex domains, as it allows locally increased resolutions independent from size and structure of the background mesh. Motivating applications for such a domain decomposition technique are complex fluid‐structure interaction problems, where an additional boundary layer mesh is used to accurately capture the flow around the structure. The objective of this work is to provide an accurate and robust XFEM‐based coupling for low‐ as well as high‐Reynolds‐number flows. Our formulation is built from the following essential ingredients: Coupling conditions on the embedded interface are imposed weakly using Nitsche's method supported by extra terms to guarantee mass conservation and to control the convective mass transport across the interface for transient viscous‐dominated and convection‐dominated flows. Residual‐based fluid stabilizations in the interior of the fluid subdomains and accompanying face‐oriented fluid and ghost‐penalty stabilizations in the interface zone stabilize the formulation in the entire fluid domain. A detailed numerical study of our stabilized embedded fluid formulation, including an investigation of variants of Nitsche's method for viscous flows, shows optimal error convergence for viscous‐dominated and convection‐dominated flow problems independent of the interface position. Challenging two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional numerical examples highlight the robustness of our approach in all flow regimes: benchmark computations for laminar flow around a cylinder, a turbulent driven cavity flow at Re = 10000 and the flow interacting with a three‐dimensional flexible wall. The objective of this paper is the development and assessment of a fourth‐order compact scheme for unsteady incompressible viscous flows. A brief review of the main developments of compact and high‐order schemes for incompressible flows is given. A numerical method is then presented for the simulation of unsteady incompressible flows based on fourth‐order compact discretization with physical boundary conditions implemented directly into the scheme. The equations are discretized on a staggered Cartesian non‐uniform grid and preserve a form of kinetic energy in the inviscid limit when a skew‐symmetric form of the convective terms is used. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are demonstrated in several inviscid and viscous flow problems. Results obtained with different combinations of second‐ and fourth‐order spatial discretizations and together with either the skew‐symmetric or divergence form of the convective term are compared. The performance of these schemes is further demonstrated by two challenging flow problems, linear instability in plane channel flow and a two‐dimensional dipole–wall interaction. Results show that the compact scheme is efficient and that the divergence and skew‐symmetric forms of the convective terms produce very similar results. In some but not all cases, a gain in accuracy and computational time is obtained with a high‐order discretization of only the convective and diffusive terms. Finally, the benefits of compact schemes with respect to second‐order schemes is discussed in the case of the fully developed turbulent channel flow. Results are presented for finite element computations involving high speed, viscous compressible internal and external flows. The stabilized finite-element formulations for the Navier-Stokes equations in the conservation law form are solved using the conservation variables. To improve the accuracy of the base method, especially in the regions of flow that are associated with shocks, boundary-layers and their interactions, the Enhanced-Discretization Interface-Capturing Technique (EDICT) is utilized. An error indicator is employed to identify the regions in the computational domain that need enhanced discretization for increased accuracy. The method is implemented on a shared-memory parallel computer and is used to study complex flows, that involve shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions, in supersonic diffusers and wind-tunnels. The start-up problem in supersonic wind-tunnels, caused by a narrow second throat in the diffuser section, is simulated. This computation brings out some of the very interesting features of the unsteady dynamics of the start-up shock.  相似文献

In this article we discuss the reduced basis method (RBM) for optimal control of unsteady viscous flows. RBM is a reduction method in which one can achieve the versatility of the finite element method or another for that matter and gain significant reduction in the number of degrees of freedom. The essential idea in this method is to define a reduced order subspace spanned by few basis elements and then obtain the solution via a Galerkin projection. We present several ways to define this subspace. Feasibility of the approach is demonstrated on two boundary control problems in cavity and wall bounded channel flows. Control action is effected through boundary surface movement on part of the solid wall. Application of RBM to the control problems leads to finite dimensional optimal control problems which are solved using Newton's method. Through computational experiments we demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of the reduced basis method for control of unsteady viscous flows.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to investigate high‐order numerical approximations of scalar conservation laws with nonlocal viscous term. The viscous term is given in the form of convolution in space variable. With the help of the characteristic of viscous term, we design a semidiscrete local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method to solve the nonlocal model. We prove stability and convergence of semidiscrete LDG method in L2 norm. The theoretical analysis reveals that the present numerical scheme is stable with optimal convergence order for the linear case, and it is stable with sub‐optimal convergence order for nonlinear case. To demonstrate the validity and accuracy of our scheme, we test the Burgers equation with two typical nonlocal fractional viscous terms. The numerical results show the convergence order accuracy in space for both linear and nonlinear cases. Some numerical simulations are provided to show the robustness and effectiveness of the present numerical scheme.  相似文献

The finite volume method with exact two‐phase Riemann problems (FIVER) is a two‐faceted computational method for compressible multi‐material (fluid–fluid, fluid–structure, and multi‐fluid–structure) problems characterized by large density jumps, and/or highly nonlinear structural motions and deformations. For compressible multi‐phase flow problems, FIVER is a Godunov‐type discretization scheme characterized by the construction and solution at the material interfaces of local, exact, two‐phase Riemann problems. For compressible fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problems, it is an embedded boundary method for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) capable of handling large structural deformations and topological changes. Originally developed for inviscid multi‐material computations on nonbody‐fitted structured and unstructured grids, FIVER is extended in this paper to laminar and turbulent viscous flow and FSI problems. To this effect, it is equipped with carefully designed extrapolation schemes for populating the ghost fluid values needed for the construction, in the vicinity of the fluid–structure interface, of second‐order spatial approximations of the viscous fluxes and source terms associated with Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS)‐based turbulence models and large eddy simulation (LES). Two support algorithms, which pertain to the application of any embedded boundary method for CFD to the robust, accurate, and fast solution of FSI problems, are also presented in this paper. The first one focuses on the fast computation of the time‐dependent distance to the wall because it is required by many RANS‐based turbulence models. The second algorithm addresses the robust and accurate computation of the flow‐induced forces and moments on embedded discrete surfaces, and their finite element representations when these surfaces are flexible. Equipped with these two auxiliary algorithms, the extension of FIVER to viscous flow and FSI problems is first verified with the LES of a turbulent flow past an immobile prolate spheroid, and the computation of a series of unsteady laminar flows past two counter‐rotating cylinders. Then, its potential for the solution of complex, turbulent, and flexible FSI problems is also demonstrated with the simulation, using the Spalart–Allmaras turbulence model, of the vertical tail buffeting of an F/A‐18 aircraft configuration and the comparison of the obtained numerical results with flight test data. A flexible, fully automated, computer‐algebra algorithm is developed for solving a class of non‐linear partial‐differential evolution equations arising frequently in the modeling of two‐dimensional transient free‐surface viscous thin‐film flows. The method, which is formulated for solving spatially periodic problems, is based upon an explicit multiple‐timescale asymptotic approximation of the thin‐film thickness. It admits the resolution of diverse physical phenomena by employing a finite geometric progression of increasingly slow timescales. The method is implemented on a challenging test problem comprising the evolution of an annular film of viscous liquid, with a free surface, adhering to the exterior of a horizontal rotating circular cylinder; as a model for numerous industrially motivated coating flows, this benchmark problem has been analyzed in diverse numerical and theoretical studies, against whose results those of the present method are compared. The explicit algebraic form of the solution admits a study of large‐time evolutionary dynamics that lies beyond the reach of considerably more expensive conventional numerical solvers, thereby shedding new light on the hitherto‐undiscovered explicit dependence of large‐time evolutionary fluid dynamics in terms of independent parameters describing gravitational and capillary effects. The results obtained from the new computer‐algebra procedure are demonstrated to be in good agreement with those obtained from a bespoke efficient numerical integration method that is spectrally accurate in space and 8th‐order (Runge–Kutta) in time. Newly discovered mechanisms describing the decay of free‐surface wave modes, from arbitrary initial conditions to the steady state, are presented. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This work simulates a complex fluid flow in fluid–structure interaction (FSI). The flow under consideration is governed by Navier–Stokes equations for incompressible viscous fluids and modeled with the finite volume method. Large eddy simulation is used to simulate the unsteady turbulent flow. The structure is represented by a finite element formulation. The present work introduces a strongly coupled partitioned approach that is applied to complex flow in fluid machinery. In this approach, the fluid and structure equations are solved separately using different solvers, but are implicitly coupled into one single module based on sensitivity analysis of the important displacement and stress modes. The applied modes and their responses are used to build up a reduced‐order model. The proposed model is used to predict the unsteady flow fields of a 3D complete passage, involving in stay, guide vanes, and runner blades, for a Francis hydro turbine and FSI is considered. The computational results show that a fairly good convergence solution is achieved by using the reduced‐order model that is based on only a few displacement and stress modes, which largely reduces the computational cost, compared with traditional approaches. At the same time, a comparison of the numerical results of the model with available experimental data validates the methodology and assesses its accuracy. A Lagrangian framework is set out to describe turbulent non-premixed combustion in high speed coflowing jet flows. The final aim is to provide a robust computational methodology to simulate, in various conditions, the underexpanded GH2/GO2 torch jet that is used to initiate combustion in an expander cycle engine. The proposed approach relies on an early modelling proposal of Borghi and his coworkers. The model is well suited to describe finite rate chemistry effects and its recent extension to high speed flows allows one to take the influence of viscous dissipation phenomena into account. Indeed, since the chemical source terms are highly temperature sensitive, the influence of viscous phenomena on the thermal runaway is likely to be all the more pronounced since the Mach number values are high. The validation of the extended model has been recently performed through the numerical simulation of two distinct well-documented experimental databases. Only a brief summary of this preliminary validation step is provided here. The main purpose of the present work is to proceed with the numerical simulation of geometries that bring together the essential peculiarities of the underexpanded GH2/GO2 torch. The behavior of the corresponding supersonic coflowing jet flames for various conditions is discussed in the light of computational results. To cite this article: J.-F. Izard, A. Mura, C. R. The truncation error associated with different numerical schemes (first order finite volume, second order finite difference, control volume finite element) and meshes (fixed Cartesian, fixed structured triangular, fixed unstructured triangular and dynamically adapting unstructured triangular) is quantified in terms of apparent longitudinal and transverse diffusivity in tracer displacements and in terms of the early time growth rate of immiscible viscous fingers. The change in apparent numerical longitudinal diffusivity with element size agrees well with the predictions of Taylor series analysis of truncation error but the apparent, numerical transverse diffusivity is much lower than the longitudinal diffusivity in all cases. Truncation error reduces the growth rate of immiscible viscous fingers for wavenumbers greater than 1 in all cases but does not affect the growth rate of higher wavenumber fingers as much as would be seen if capillary pressure were present. The dynamically adapting mesh in the control volume finite element model gave similar levels of truncation error to much more computationally intensive fine resolution fixed meshes, confirming that these approaches have the potential to significantly reduce the computational effort required to model viscous fingering.

$\epsilon$ , the aspect ratio of the ice sheet, , the maximum bed slope (), and one of either a, the maximum amplitude of the topography, or s, the span over which local topography extends. For steady plane flow of nonlinearly viscous ice the form of the leading order and two correction terms in the asymptotic expansion is deduced and the boundary value problems for the leading order and first correction terms are presented. As illustrations, the leading order and correction terms of the horizontal velocity are calculated and plotted for typical bed configurations. Comparison are then made with the three simpler cases of ice response: isothermal and nonlinearly viscous, then temperature dependent and linearly viscous, and finally isothermal and linearly viscous. It is found that for all three the correction terms in the horizontal velocity are very small. Received June 25, 2001 / Published online November 15, 2001  相似文献
