The control of complex, unsteady flows is a pacing technology for advances in fluid mechanics. Recently, optimal control theory has become popular as a means of predicting best case controls that can guide the design of practical flow control systems. However, most of the prior work in this area has focused on incompressible flow which precludes many of the important physical flow phenomena that must be controlled in practice including the coupling of fluid dynamics, acoustics, and heat transfer. This paper presents the formulation and numerical solution of a class of optimal boundary control problems governed by the unsteady two‐dimensional compressible Navier–Stokes equations. Fundamental issues including the choice of the control space and the associated regularization term in the objective function, as well as issues in the gradient computation via the adjoint equation method are discussed. Numerical results are presented for a model problem consisting of two counter‐rotating viscous vortices above an infinite wall which, due to the self‐induced velocity field, propagate downward and interact with the wall. The wall boundary control is the temporal and spatial distribution of wall‐normal velocity. Optimal controls for objective functions that target kinetic energy, heat transfer, and wall shear stress are presented along with the influence of control regularization for each case. An unstructured non‐nested multigrid method is presented for efficient simulation of unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes flows. The Navier–Stokes solver is based on the artificial compressibility approach and a higher‐order characteristics‐based finite‐volume scheme on unstructured grids. Unsteady flow is calculated with an implicit dual time stepping scheme. For efficient computation of unsteady viscous flows over complex geometries, an unstructured multigrid method is developed to speed up the convergence rate of the dual time stepping calculation. The multigrid method is used to simulate the steady and unsteady incompressible viscous flows over a circular cylinder for validation and performance evaluation purposes. It is found that the multigrid method with three levels of grids results in a 75% reduction in CPU time for the steady flow calculation and 55% reduction for the unsteady flow calculation, compared with its single grid counterparts. The results obtained are compared with numerical solutions obtained by other researchers as well as experimental measurements wherever available and good agreements are obtained. We present in this paper test results of flexible micro-pillars and pillar arrays for wall shear stress measurements in flows with fluctuating wall shear stress such as unsteady separated flows or turbulent flows. Previous papers reported on the sensing principle and fabrication process. Static calibrations have shown this sensor to have a maximum nonlinearity of 1% over two orders of wall-shear-stress. For measurements in flows with fluctuating wall shear stress the dynamic response has been experimentally verified in an oscillating pipe flow and compared to a calculated response based on Stokes’ and Oseen’s solution for unsteady flow around a cylinder. The results demonstrate good agreement under the given boundary conditions of cylindrical micro-pillars and the limit of viscous Stokes-flow around the pillar. Depending on the fluid and pillar geometry, different response curves result ranging from a flat low-pass filtered response to a strong resonant behavior. Two different methods are developed to detect the frequency content and the directional wall shear stress information from image processing of large sensor films with arrays of micro-pillars of different geometry. Design rules are given to achieve the optimal conditions with respect to signal-to-noise ratio, sensitivity and bandwidth for measurements in turbulent flows.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper is concerned with numerical solutions of optimal control problems for unsteady, viscous, incompressible flows. In general, controls can be of the distributed type (external body force) or Dirichlet type 7lpar;e.g., boundary velocity). Here, wc only consider the former case, although most of what we present is also applicable to the latter. Two different optimization objectives and associated solution methodologies are described. One involves a global-in-time functional, the other a local-in-time functional. Which method is preferred depends on the specific application. Some test computational results are presented.  相似文献

This paper presents a stabilized extended finite element method (XFEM) based fluid formulation to embed arbitrary fluid patches into a fixed background fluid mesh. The new approach is highly beneficial when it comes to computational grid generation for complex domains, as it allows locally increased resolutions independent from size and structure of the background mesh. Motivating applications for such a domain decomposition technique are complex fluid‐structure interaction problems, where an additional boundary layer mesh is used to accurately capture the flow around the structure. The objective of this work is to provide an accurate and robust XFEM‐based coupling for low‐ as well as high‐Reynolds‐number flows. Our formulation is built from the following essential ingredients: Coupling conditions on the embedded interface are imposed weakly using Nitsche's method supported by extra terms to guarantee mass conservation and to control the convective mass transport across the interface for transient viscous‐dominated and convection‐dominated flows. Residual‐based fluid stabilizations in the interior of the fluid subdomains and accompanying face‐oriented fluid and ghost‐penalty stabilizations in the interface zone stabilize the formulation in the entire fluid domain. A detailed numerical study of our stabilized embedded fluid formulation, including an investigation of variants of Nitsche's method for viscous flows, shows optimal error convergence for viscous‐dominated and convection‐dominated flow problems independent of the interface position. Challenging two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional numerical examples highlight the robustness of our approach in all flow regimes: benchmark computations for laminar flow around a cylinder, a turbulent driven cavity flow at Re = 10000 and the flow interacting with a three‐dimensional flexible wall. This paper presents computational solutions for unsteady viscous flows in channels with a downstream-facing step, followed by an oscillating floor. These solutions of the unsteady Navier–Stokes equations are obtained with a time-integration method using artificial compressibility in a fixed computational domain, which is obtained via a time-dependent coordinate transformation from the fluid domain with moving boundaries. The computational method is first validated for steady viscous flows past a downstream-facing step by comparison with previous numerical solutions and experimental results. This method is then used to obtain solutions for unsteady viscous flows with multiple separation regions over a downstream-facing step with oscillating walls, for which there are no previously known solutions. Thus, the present results may be used as benchmark solutions for the unsteady viscous flows with multiple separation regions between fixed and oscillating walls.  相似文献

This paper describes a three-step finite element method and its applications to unsteady incompressible fluid flows. Stability analysis of the one-dimensional pure convection equation shows that this method has third-order accuracy and an extended numerical stability domain in comparison with the Lax--Wendroff finite element method. The method is cost-effective for incompressible flows because it permits less frequent updates of the pressure field with good accuracy. In contrast with the Taylor-Galerkin method, the present method does not contain any new higher-order derivatives, which makes it suitable for solving non-linear multidimensional problems and flows with complicated boundary conditions. The three-step finite element method has been used to simulate unsteady incompressible flows. The numerical results obtained are in good agreement with those in the literature.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is the development and assessment of a fourth‐order compact scheme for unsteady incompressible viscous flows. A brief review of the main developments of compact and high‐order schemes for incompressible flows is given. A numerical method is then presented for the simulation of unsteady incompressible flows based on fourth‐order compact discretization with physical boundary conditions implemented directly into the scheme. The equations are discretized on a staggered Cartesian non‐uniform grid and preserve a form of kinetic energy in the inviscid limit when a skew‐symmetric form of the convective terms is used. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are demonstrated in several inviscid and viscous flow problems. Results obtained with different combinations of second‐ and fourth‐order spatial discretizations and together with either the skew‐symmetric or divergence form of the convective term are compared. The performance of these schemes is further demonstrated by two challenging flow problems, linear instability in plane channel flow and a two‐dimensional dipole–wall interaction. Results show that the compact scheme is efficient and that the divergence and skew‐symmetric forms of the convective terms produce very similar results. In some but not all cases, a gain in accuracy and computational time is obtained with a high‐order discretization of only the convective and diffusive terms. Finally, the benefits of compact schemes with respect to second‐order schemes is discussed in the case of the fully developed turbulent channel flow. This paper presents an immersed boundary method for compressible Navier–Stokes equations in irregular domains, based on a local radial basis function approximation. This approach allows one to define a reconstruction of the radial basis functions on each irregular interface cell to treat both the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions accurately on the immersed interfaces. Several numerical examples, including problems with available analytical solutions and the well-documented flow past an airfoil, are presented to test the proposed method. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method provides accurate solutions for viscous compressible flows.  相似文献

A Cartesian grid method using immersed boundary technique to simulate the impact of body in fluid has become an important research topic in computational fluid dynamics because of its simplification, automation of grid generation, and accuracy of results. In the frame of Cartesian grid, one often uses finite volume method with second order accuracy or finite difference method. In this paper, an h‐adaptive Runge–Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method on Cartesian grid with ghost cell immersed boundary method for arbitrarily complex geometries is developed. A ghost cell immersed boundary treatment with the modification of normal velocity is presented. The method is validated versus well documented test problems involving both steady and unsteady compressible flows through complex bodies over a wide range of Mach numbers. The numerical results show that the present boundary treatment to some extent reduces the error of entropy and demonstrate the efficiency, robustness, and versatility of the proposed approach. We present a new surface-intrinsic linear form for the treatment of normal and tangential surface tension boundary conditions in C0-geometry variational discretizations of viscous incompressible free-surface flows in three space dimensions. The new approach is illustrated by a finite (spectral) element unsteady Navier-Stokes analysis of the stability of a falling liquid film.  相似文献

A discontinuity-capturing scheme of finite element method (FEM) is proposed. The unstructured-grid technique combined with a new type of adaptive mesh approach is developed for both compressible and incompressible unsteady flows, which exhibits the capability of capturing the shock waves and/or thin shear layers accurately in an unsteady viscous flow at high Reynolds number. In particular, a new testing variable, i.e., the disturbed kinetic energyE, is suggested and used in the adaptive mesh computation, which is universally applicable to the capturing of both shock waves and shear layers in the inviscid flow and viscous flow at high Reynolds number. Based on several calculated examples, this approach has been proved to be effective and efficient for the calculations of compressible and incompressible flows. In this paper, we present higher order least-squares finite element formulations for viscous, incompressible, isothermal Navier–Stokes equations using spectral/hp basis functions. The second-order Navier–Stokes equations are recast as first-order system of equations using stresses as auxiliary variables. Both steady-state and transient problems are considered. For a better coupling of pressure and velocity, especially in transient flows, an iterative penalisation strategy is employed. The outflow-type boundary conditions are applied in a weak sense through the least-squares functional. The formulation is verified by solving various benchmark problems like the lid-driven cavity, backward-facing step and flow over cylinder problems using direct serial solver UMFPACK.  相似文献

There are many problems of the dynamics of viscous flows of liquids and gases at high Reynolds numbers for the solution of which the classical theory of the boundary layer cannot be used. This applies, in particular, to all the problems with various sorts of local singularities in the stream-flows in the vicinity of corners, in regions of interaction of the boundary layer with an incident shock, flows near points of separation or attachment of the stream, etc. The purpose of the present paper is to attempt the theoretical investigation of problems of this type on the basis of the general analysis of the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. In order to do this, use is made of the familiar method of the construction and splicing of a combination of asymptotic expansions representing the solutions in the various characteristic regions of the stream with viscosity decreasing without bound [1].As an example, detailed consideration is given to the problem of viscous supersonic flow near a wall with large local curvature of the surface.  相似文献

This study investigates a new energy relaxation method designed to capture the dynamics of unsteady, viscous, real gas flows governed by the compressible Navier–Stokes equations. We focus on real gas models accounting for inelastic molecular collisions and yielding temperature‐dependent heat capacities. The relaxed Navier–Stokes equations are discretized using a mixed finite volume/finite element method and a high‐order time integration scheme. The accuracy of the energy relaxation method is investigated on three test problems of increasing complexity: the advection of a periodic set of vortices, the interaction of a temperature spot with a weak shock, and finally, the interaction of a reflected shock with its trailing boundary layer in a shock tube. In all cases, the method is validated against benchmark solutions and the numerical errors resulting from both discretization and energy relaxation are assessed independently. A finite element algorithm for solving the Navier-Stokes equations is presented for the analysis of high-speed viscous flows. The algorithm uses triangular elements. The unsteady equations are integrated to steady state with a Runge-Kutta time-marching scheme. A postprocessing artificial dissipation term is introduced to stabilize the computations and to dampen dissipation errors. Numerical results are compared with the calculation of uniform flow on a rectangular region which encounters an embedded oblique shock. A shock/turbulent boundary layer problem is also solved and results are compared with experimental data. It is shown that the postprocessing smoothing term and boundary conditions similar to the finite difference method work well in the present numerical studies.  相似文献

The finite volume method with exact two‐phase Riemann problems (FIVER) is a two‐faceted computational method for compressible multi‐material (fluid–fluid, fluid–structure, and multi‐fluid–structure) problems characterized by large density jumps, and/or highly nonlinear structural motions and deformations. For compressible multi‐phase flow problems, FIVER is a Godunov‐type discretization scheme characterized by the construction and solution at the material interfaces of local, exact, two‐phase Riemann problems. For compressible fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problems, it is an embedded boundary method for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) capable of handling large structural deformations and topological changes. Originally developed for inviscid multi‐material computations on nonbody‐fitted structured and unstructured grids, FIVER is extended in this paper to laminar and turbulent viscous flow and FSI problems. To this effect, it is equipped with carefully designed extrapolation schemes for populating the ghost fluid values needed for the construction, in the vicinity of the fluid–structure interface, of second‐order spatial approximations of the viscous fluxes and source terms associated with Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS)‐based turbulence models and large eddy simulation (LES). Two support algorithms, which pertain to the application of any embedded boundary method for CFD to the robust, accurate, and fast solution of FSI problems, are also presented in this paper. The first one focuses on the fast computation of the time‐dependent distance to the wall because it is required by many RANS‐based turbulence models. The second algorithm addresses the robust and accurate computation of the flow‐induced forces and moments on embedded discrete surfaces, and their finite element representations when these surfaces are flexible. Equipped with these two auxiliary algorithms, the extension of FIVER to viscous flow and FSI problems is first verified with the LES of a turbulent flow past an immobile prolate spheroid, and the computation of a series of unsteady laminar flows past two counter‐rotating cylinders. Then, its potential for the solution of complex, turbulent, and flexible FSI problems is also demonstrated with the simulation, using the Spalart–Allmaras turbulence model, of the vertical tail buffeting of an F/A‐18 aircraft configuration and the comparison of the obtained numerical results with flight test data. This paper presents the application of a general shape sensitivity equation method (SEM) to unsteady laminar flows. The formulation accounts for complex parameter dependence and is suitable for a wide range of problems. The flow and sensitivity equations are solved on 3D meshes using a Streamline-Upwind Petrov Galerkin (SUPG) finite element method. In the case of shape parameters, boundary conditions for sensitivities depend on the flow gradient at the boundary. Therefore, an accurate recovery of solution gradients is crucial to the success of shape sensitivity computations. In this work, solution gradients at boundary points are extracted using the Finite Node Displacement (FiND) method on which the finite element discretization is enriched locally via the insertion of nodes close to the boundary points. The normal derivative of the solution is then determined using finite differences. This approach to evaluate shape sensitivity boundary conditions is embedded in the continuous SEM. The methodology is applied to the flow past a cylinder in ground proximity. First, the proposed method is verified on a steady state problem. The computed sensitivity is compared to the actual change in the solution when a small perturbation is imposed to the shape parameter. Then, the study investigates the ability of the SEM to anticipate the unsteady flow response to changes in the ground to cylinder gap. A reduction of the gap causes damping of the vortex shedding while an increase amplifies the unsteadiness.  相似文献
