The strain energy density factor S was first proposed by Sih for the prediction of the critical of the load and failure direction under monotonic, mixed mode loading condition. It seems a natural extension to apply the same concept to fatigue crack propagation. However, a close examination of the existing theory indicates that the Strain Energy Density Factor cannot logically account for the phenomena of the R-ratio effect and crack arrest. Thus, modification is necessary before the concept can be applied successfully for the prediction of mixed mode fatigue crack propagation.Based on the concept of hysteresis energy dissipation, an effective strain energy density factor range, ΔSp,eff, is proposed for the correlation of fatigue crack growth data. ΔSp,eff is consistent with the concept of crack closure. Experimental investigation indicates that it could predict the crack growth rates and trajectories.  相似文献

The fatigue crack growth characteristics of CrlMo steel have been investigated at 861 K over the R-ratio range 0.1–0.7 utilising a dwell time of 10 min. at maximum load. All tests were conducted under load control in a laboratory air environment. It was established that the R-ratio significantly affected the fatigue crack extension behaviour inasmuch that with increasing R-ratio, the critical ΔK level for the onset of creep fatigue interactive growth, ΔKIG, decreased from 20 to 7 MPa√m and the threshold stress intensity, ΔKth, decreased from 9 to about 3 MPa√m. At intermediate ΔK levels, i.e. between ΔKth and ΔKIG, the fatigue crack extension rates, for all R-ratio values, resided on or slightly below the CTOD line, which represents the upper bound for contrnuum controlled fatigue crack growth. Creep fatigue interactive growth was typified by crack extension rates that reside above the CTOD line with a ΔKIG dependence; the attainment of some critical creep condition or crack linkage condition which causes the abrupt change in crack extension behaviour at ΔKIG; and crack extension occurs almost exclusively in an intergranular manner. The R-ratio and ΔKIG followed a linear relation. A literature review concerning the effect of temperature on the threshold fatigue crack growth characteristics of low alloy ferritic steels demonstrated powerful effects of temperature; the magnitude of these effects, however, were dependent upon the testing temperature regime and R-ratio level. The effect of R-ratio on ΔKth was greatest at temperatures >400°C, significant at ambient temperatures and least in the temperature range 90°C to <300°C. The relationship between temperature and ΔKth, at a given R-ratio, exhibited a through and a minimum ΔKth value was observed in the temperature range 200–250°C. The magnitude of the temperature effects on ΔKth decreased with increasing R-ratio. Such effects of temperature and R-ratio on ΔKth was reasonably explained in terms of crack closure effects. Finally, the present elevated temperature fatigue crack growth data exhibited massive crack extension enhancement values when compared to ambient near-threshold fatigue crack growth data for CrlMo steel. Such large enhancement values were the combined effects of temperature (environment) and frequency.  相似文献

Presented are the effect of stress ratio and thickness on the fatigue crack growth rate of CK45 steel according to DIN 17200. Test results are obtained for constant amplitude load in tension with three stress ratios of R=0, 0.2 and 0.4 and three specimen thicknesses of B=6, 12 and 24 mm. Microgauge crack opening values were used to calculate ΔKeff values from which the da/dN − ΔKeff curves are obtained. Crack closure can be applied to explain the influence of mean stress and specimen thickness on the fatigue crack growth rate in the second regime of the two-parameter crack growth rate relation. An empirical model is chosen for calculating the normalized load ratio parameter U as a function of R, B and ΔK and, for correlating the test data.  相似文献

A pseudo-elastic damage-accumulation model is developed by application of the strain energy density theory. The three-point bending specimen is analyzed to illustrate the crack growth characteristics according to a linear elastic softening constitutive law that is typical of concrete materials. Damage accumulation is accounted for by the decrease of elastic modulus and fracture toughness. Both of these effects are assessed by means of the strain energy density functions in the elements around a slowly moving crack. The rate of change of the strain energy density factor S with crack growth as expressed by the relation dS/da = constant is shown to describe the failure behavior of concrete. Results are obtained for different loading steps that yield different slopes of lines in an S versus a (crack length) plot. The lines rotate about the common intersect in an anti-clockwise direction as the load steps are increased. The intersect shifts upward according to increase in the specimen size. In this way, the combined interaction of material properties, load steps and specimen geometry and size are easily analyzed in terms of the failure mode or behavior that can change from the very brittle to the ductile involving stable crack growth. An upper limit on specimen or structural size is established beyond which stable crack growth ceases to occur and failure corresponds to unstable crack propagation or catastrophic fracture. The parameters that control the failure mode are the threshold values of the strain energy density function (dW/dV)c and the strain energy density factor Sc.  相似文献

In this paper, an investigation of fatigue crack propagation in rectangular plates containing an inclined surface crack is presented. A criterion for the three-dimensional stress state is proposed to predict fatigue crack initiation angles. It is assumed that the direction of crack initiation coincides with the direction of the minimum radius of the plastic zone defined by the von Mises yield criterion. The maximum energy release rate criterion, i.e., Gmax criterion, is extended to study the fatigue crack growth characteristics of mixed mode cracks. A modification has been made to this criterion to implement the consideration of the plastic strain energy. Subsequently, this concept is applied to predict crack growth due to fatigue loads. Experiments for checking the theoretical predictions from the proposed criterion have been conducted. The results obtained are compared with those obtained using the commonly employed fracture criteria and the test data.  相似文献

The ferrite and ferroelectric phase of magnetoelectroelastic (MEE) material can be selected and processed to control the macroscopic behavior of electron devices using continuum mechanics models. Once macro- and/or microdefects appear, the highly intensified magnetic and electric energy localization could alter the response significantly to change the design performance. Alignment of poling directions of piezomagnetic and piezoelectric materials can add to the complexity of the MEE material behavior to which this study will be concerned with.Appropriate balance of distortional and dilatational energy density is no longer obvious when a material possesses anisotropy and/or nonhomogeneity. An excess of the former could result in unwanted geometric change while the latter may lead to unexpected fracture initiation. Such information can be evaluated quantitatively from the stationary values of the energy density function dW/dV. The maxima and minima have been known to coincide, respectively, with possible locations of permanent shape change and crack initiation regardless of material and loading type. The direction of poling with respect to a line crack and the material microstructure described by the constitutive coefficients will be specified explicitly with reference to the applied magnetic field, electric field and mechanical stress, both normal and shear. The crack initiation load and direction could be predicted by finding the direction for which the volume change is the largest. In contrast to intuition, change in poling directions can influence the cracking behavior of MEE dramatically. This will be demonstrated by the numerical results for the BaTiO3–CoFe2O4 composite having different volume fractions where BaTiO3 and CoFe2O4 are, respectively, the inclusion and matrix.To be emphasized is that mode I and II crack behavior will not have the same definition as that in classical fracture mechanics where load and crack extension symmetry would coincide. A striking result is found for a mode II crack. By keeping the magnetic poling fixed, a reversal of electric poling changed the crack initiation angle from θ0=+80° to θ0=−80° using the line extending ahead of the crack as the reference. This effect is also sensitive to the distance from the crack tip. Displayed and discussed are results for r/a=10−4 and 10−1. Because the theory of magnetoelectroelasticity used in the analysis is based on the assumption of equilibrium where the influence of material microstructure is homogenized, the local space and temporal effects must be interpreted accordingly. Among them are the maximum values of (dW/dV)max and (dW/dV)min which refer to as possible sites of yielding and fracture. Since time and size are homogenized, it is implicitly understood that there is more time for yielding as compared to fracture being a more sudden process. This renders a higher dW/dV in contrast to that for fracture. Put it differently, a lower dW/dV with a shorter time for release could be more detrimental.  相似文献

The direction of propagation of rolling contact fatigue cracks is observed to depend upon the direction of motion of the load. In this paper approximate calculations are described of the variation of Mode II stress intensity factors at each tip of a subsurface crack, which lies parallel to the surface of an elastic half-space, due to a load moving over the surface. In particular the effect of frictional locking of the crack faces under the load is investigated. In consequence of frictional locking the range of SIF at the trailing tip ΔKT is found to be about 30% greater than that of the leading tip ΔKL, which is consistent with observations that subsurface cracks propagate predominantly in the direction of motion of the load over the surface. The effects on kt and klof crack length, crack face friction, traction forces at the surface and residual shear stresses are also investigated.  相似文献

This paper describes the influence of material toughness degradation, through reversed temper embrittlement (RTE) and mean stress on the near threshold fatigue crack growth characteristics of a CrMoV turbine bolting steel at ambient and elevated temperatures. It was established at ambient temperatures that strong effects of R-ratio and material condition (toughness) were observed on near threshold fatigue crack growth characteristics. At elevated temperatures it was shown that for the non-embrittled material that only under low R-ratio conditions did increased temperature increase the level of threshold stress intensity ΔKth, by some 20%. In the case of embrittled material, increasing the temperature increased ΔKth levels by around 30% and decreased near threshold growth rates by an order of magnitude at low to intermediate R-ratio levels.The effects of R-ratio on ΔKth for all material and mechanical testing conditions could be simply expressed by the difference between ΔKth at R = O and a constant B multiplied by R.Quantitative fractographic observations indicated that, generally, the incidence of intergranular failure prevalent in embrittled and non-embrittled steels exhibited a maximum at some specific ΔK level. Also in embrittled steels large effects of environmental assisted crack (EAC) growth were observed at near threshold fatigue crack growth rates. It was suggested that this was the result of the much reduced material cohesive strength which was caused by the presence of both impurity and hydrogen atoms.  相似文献

This paper attempts to describe the fatigue crack growth response of a plasma spray 80%---20%Cr material, utilised in the corrosion protection of engineering components, whose microstructure consisted of (i) an austenitic matrix, (ii) a secondary dispersion of a chromite non-metallic inclusion phase and (iii) regions of closed and connected porosity.It was demonstrated that little or no effect of R-ratio was observed on the threshold stress intensity range ΔKth, which was attributed to both the materials fine to intermediate grain size and probable plain stress testing conditions which significantly decrease crack closure effects. At intermediate fatigue crack growth rates high ratio results were an order of magnitude faster than the low R-ratio data. This was the result of the high R-ratio case seeking out more regions of porosity which then increased the local ΔK on the remaining ligaments leading to accelerated crack growth rates.Porosity was shown to significantly decrease the value of ΔKth and the extent of porosity observed on fatigue fracture surfaces increased with ΔK level and was well in excess of that of 5% recorded by metallography. Hence the growing fatigue crack preferentially sought out regions of porosity as they represented locations of low fracture energy.  相似文献

This paper investigates the effect of load shedding steps on constant-ΔK testing. ASTM fatigue crack growth specimens have been used in constant-ΔK tests for many fatigue investigations. In the tests, load levels need to be gradually stepped down to keep the stress intensity factor constant. This work points out that care should be taken in choosing the length of the step in order to control ΔK variation. Formulas for ΔK as well as crack growth rate variability are derived. The experimental application of these techniques is also presented.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth studies in rail steels and associated weld metal have shown that (a) deformed rail steel exhibited fatigue crack growth rates that are slightly faster than undeformed rail steel and (b) weld metal growth data are appreciably faster than rail steel growth results and exhibit growth rate plateaux that reside above the upper bound reported for rail steel fatigue crack growth.In rail steel microstructures at low ΔK levels fatigue crack extension occurred by a ductile striated growth mechanism. However at Kmax values approaching 40 MPa √m transgranular cleavage facets initially formed and their incidence increased with Kmax until final fast fracture. The average cleavage facet size agreed well with pearlite nodule dimensions of 60–100 μm.The weld metal microstructure was much coarser than the rail steel and contained highly directional columnar grain growth. At all ΔK levels the dominant fracture mode was transgranular cleavage containing small isolated regions of ductile striated fatigue crack growth. The cleavage facet size varied from 150 to 600 μm; such a large variation was explained by the fact that in general crack extension tended to occur in association with the proeutectoid ferrite phase.  相似文献

Experiments are described which determined the effects of various residual stress distributions on the growth rate of fatigue cracks. For each stress distribution, the contribution (KRS) to the net stress intensity at the crack tip is determined, and a comparison is then made with the behaviour predicted using a fracture mechanics approach based on a weight function analysis and a simple crack closure model. The example studied is a thickwalled pressure vessel containing a longitudinal crack which grows radially from the inner surface; fatigue cracks were grown under laboratory conditions in ring test specimens. sectioned from vessels which had been cold-expanded by different amounts to increase their pressure limits, and so contained various complex residual stress distributions. The experiments provide direct evidence that the effects of residual stress (and by extension, thermal stress) on the crack tip stress intensity may be modelled conveniently using weight function techniques, and can be incorporated satisfactorily in fatigue crack growth analyses.  相似文献

Finite element analyses were conducted in order to evaluate the mode I and mode II stress intensity factors for inclined edge cracks under cyclic contact load under rolling and rolling–sliding condition. The SIF range depends on crack orientation, crack length to Hertzian contact zone half-width ratio, friction between the crack faces and friction on the contact surface. The results were combined in two compact functions that determine the ΔKI and ΔKII values. The crack propagation mode and direction were investigated using both the maximum stress criterion and the minimum strain energy density criterion. The results are displayed in graph form, which allows a fast evaluation of the crack growth condition.  相似文献

An investigation is presented on the suitability and accuracy of a thermoelastic technique for the analysis of fatigue cracks. The stress intensity factor ranges ΔK I and ΔK II are determined from thermoelastic data recorded from around the tip of a sharp slot in a steel specimen under biaxial load, in order to assess the accuracy of the technique. ΔK I and ΔK II are determined to within 4% and 9% of a theoretical prediction, respectively. The results from a similar test on a fatigue crack under biaxial load are also presented. These show that thermoelastic stress analysis is a rapid and accurate way of analyzing mixed-mode fatigue cracks. A discussion is given on the potential of thermoelastic stress analysis of propagating cracks.  相似文献

The fatigue crack initiation and propagation in the pure aluminum single crystals with different orientations are investigated. Acoustic Emission (AE) technique is used to monitor the fatigue crack initiation and propagation data. The results show that the acoustic emission technique could be used for detecting fatigue crack initiation and propagation. The total counts of AE are plotted as a function of the number of fatigue cycles, and change in slope of the curve corresponded to the initiation of the fatigue crack. The fatigue crack initiation and propagation are related to the specimen crystalline orientation. Specifically, they depend on the ratio K of the Schmid factor of the secondary slip system, to that of the primary one. The greater the ratio K, the easier the fatigue crack initiates and the faster the fatigue crack propagates. When the ratio K is equal or close to one, the fatigue crack grows either along a cleavage plane which intersects both the primary plane and the secondary one or along the primary slip plane and the secondary one. Growth along alternating planes can also occur giving rise to a zigzag path. When the ratio K is much less than one, the fatigue crack grows along the primary slip plane only. The results are explained with a model for the faceted mode of fatigue crack growth.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth is caused primarily by shear decohesion due to dislocation motion in the crack tip region. The resolved shear stress, which drives dislocation in a crystal, is strongly orientation dependent, and therefore, the cyclic plastic deformation of the shear decohesion process is highly anisotropic.The crack planes are often inclined to the loading axis both in the inplane orientation and in the thickness direction. This inclination induces all three modes of the crack tip stress field, KI, KII, and KIII.Fatigue crack growth in large-grain Al 7029 aluminum alloy was studied. The crack tip stress fields of the test specimens are calculated with the finite element method. The values of KI, KII, and KIII are evaluated. The orientation of the crystal at a crack tip was determined with the Laue X-ray method. The crystal orientation and the calculated crack tip stress fields are used to compute the resolved shear stress intensity of each of the twelve slip systems of the crystal at the crack tip. The resolved shear stress field of a slip system is linearly proportional to the resolved shear stress intensity coefficient, RSSIC.The values of RSSIC thus evaluated are used to analyze the orientations of the crack plane and to correlate with the shear fatigue crack growth rate.  相似文献

The maximum energy release rate criterion, i.e., G max criterion, is commonly used for crack propagation analysis. This fracture criterion is based on the elastic macroscopic strength of materials. In the present investigation, however, the G max criterion has been modified in order to accommodate the consideration of plastic strain energy. This modified criterion is extended to study the fatigue crack growth characteristics of mixed-mode cracks. To predict crack propagation due to fatigue loads, a new elasto–plastic energy model is presented. This new model includes the effects of material properties such as strain hardening exponent n, yield strength σ y , and fracture toughness and stress intensity factor ranges. The results obtained are compared with those obtained using the commonly employed crack growth law and the experimental data.  相似文献

Two parameters, Kmax* and δKth*, are presented to describe fatigue threshold behaviour and damage under any load ratio without invoking crack closure. Modelled are two fatigue thresholds that are coherently related to fatigue limit δσFL; they predict the fundamental threshold curves for aluminium alloys. By using a continuous configuration of dislocations in pile-up, fatigue limit behaviour is simulated as pile-up of dislocations against grain boundaries. A fatigue limit is determined in terms of a critical condition at which a fictitious microcrack associated with the pile-up corresponds to the onset of propagation. These two fatigue thresholds are attainable as the local stresses at the crack front approaching the fatigue limit. Microstructure is incorporated in the model to account for the effect on threshold behaviour. As a result, two fatigue threshold criteria are required. Quantitative assessment of the two criteria requires only knowledge of the conventional material properties in conjunction with microstructure. The micromechanical modelling exhibits a strong dependence of fatigue thresholds upon local microstructure.  相似文献

A loading effect on a-c potential difference measured for two-dimensional stationary surface crack is examined under opening load without shear. An increment of potential difference caused by a load change is revealed to have a proportional relationship with an increment of the stress-intensity factor,K I. Also, the constant of proportionality of the relationship is found to be independent of the crack length. Based on this relationship, a procedure is developed for measurement ofK Iby means of the a-c potential drop technique.  相似文献
