A face-centered cubic polycrystal under cyclic loading is considered. It is shown that slip in the primary slip system causes the resolved shear stress in a second slip system to increase to the critical value and then this second slip system slides. Slip in this second slip system greatly increases the rate of the local plastic strain build-up in the primary slip system. Hence the occurrence of the second active slip system may greatly increase the rate of extrusion and intrusion commonly observed in face-centered cubic metals.  相似文献

This research supports recent efforts to provide an energetic approach to the prediction of stress–strain relations for single crystals undergoing single slip and to give precise formulations of experimentally observed connections between hardening of single crystals and separation of active slip-bands. Non–classical, structured deformations in the form of two-level shears permit the formulation of new measures of the active slip-band separation and of the number of lattice cells traversed during slip. A formula is obtained for the Helmholtz free energy per unit volume as a function of the shear without slip, the shear due to slip, and the relative separation of active slip-bands in a single crystal. This formula is the basis for a model, under preparation by the authors, of hardening of single crystals in single slip that is consistent with the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect and the existence of a critical resolved shear stress.  相似文献

At high shear rates a steady state of shear flow with constant shear rate, constant shear stress, and constant recoverable shear strain is observed in the short-time sandwich rheometer after some few shear units already. The melt exhibits rather high elastic shear deformations and the recovery occurs at much higher speed than it is observed in the newtonian range. The ratio of first normal stress difference and twice the shear stress, being equal to the recoverable strain in the second-order fluid limit, significantly underestimates the true elastic shear strains at high shear rates. The observed shear rate dependence of shear stress and first normal stress difference as well as of the (constrained) elastic shear strain is correctly described on the basis of a discrete relaxation time spectrum. In simple shear a stick-slip transition at the metal walls is found. Necessary for the onset of slip is a critical value of shear stress and a certain amount of elastic shear deformation or orientation of the melt.  相似文献

The analytical solution is derived for the plane strain stress field around a cylindrical void in a hexagonal close-packed single crystal with three in-plane slip systems oriented at the angle π/3 with respect to one another. The critical resolved shear stress on each slip system is assumed to be equal. The crystal is loaded by both internal pressure and a far-field equibiaxial compressive stress. The deformation field takes the form of angular sectors, called slip sectors, within which only one slip system is active; the boundaries between different sectors are radial lines. The stress fields are derived by enforcing equilibrium and a rigid, ideally plastic constitutive relationship, in the spirit of anisotropic slip line theory. The results show that each slip sector is divided into smaller regions denoted as stress sectors and the stress state valid within each stress sector is derived. It is shown that stresses are unique and are continuous within stress sectors and across stress sector boundaries, but the gradient of stresses is not continuous across the boundaries between stress sectors. The solution shows self-similarity in that the stresses over the entire domain can be determined from the stresses within a small region adjacent to the void by invoking certain scaling and symmetry properties. In addition, the stress state exhibits periodicity along logarithmic spirals which emanate from the void. The results predict that the mean value of in-plane pressure required to activate plastic deformation around a void in a single crystal can be higher than that necessary for a void in an isotropic material and is sensitive to the orientation of the slip systems relative to the void.  相似文献

This study presents a dynamic-induced direct-shear model to investigate the dynamic triggering of frictional slip on simulated granular gouges. An incident P-wave is generated as a shear load and a normal stress is constantly applied on the gouge layer. The shear stress accumulates in the incident stage and the frictional slip occurs in the slip stage without the effect of the reflected wave. The experimental results show a non-uniform shear stress distribution along the gouge layer, which may be induced by a shear load induced torque and by normal stress vibration along the layer. The shear stress at the trailing edge strongly affects the frictional slip along the P-wave loading direction, while the rebound stress at the leading edge propagates along the opposite direction. The frictional slip is triggered when the maximum shear stress at the trailing edge reaches a critical value. The normal stress influences the maximum shear stress at the trailing edge, the maximum slip displacement and the slip velocity. The advantages and the limitations of this model are discussed at the end.  相似文献

Atomistic simulations are used to investigate how the stress required for homogeneous nucleation of partial dislocations in single crystal copper under uniaxial loading changes as a function of crystallographic orientation. Molecular dynamics is employed based on an embedded-atom method potential for Cu at 10 and 300 K. Results indicate that non-Schmid parameters are important for describing the calculated dislocation nucleation behavior for single crystal orientations under tension and compression. A continuum relationship is presented that incorporates Schmid and non-Schmid terms to correlate the nucleation stress over all tensile axis orientations within the stereographic triangle. Simulations investigating the temperature dependence of homogeneous dislocation nucleation yield activation volumes of ≈0.5- and activation energies of . For uniaxial compression, full dislocation loop nucleation is observed, in contrast to uniaxial tension. One of the main differences between uniaxial tension and compression is how the applied stress is resolved normal to the slip plane on which dislocations nucleate—in tension, this normal stress is tensile, and in compression, it is compressive. Last, the tension-compression asymmetry is examined as a function of loading axis orientation. Orientations with a high resolved stress normal to the slip plane on which dislocations nucleate have a larger tension-compression asymmetry with respect to dislocation nucleation than those orientations with a low resolved normal stress. The significance of this research is that the resolved stress normal to the slip plane on which dislocations nucleate plays an important role in partial (and full) dislocation loop nucleation in FCC Cu single crystals.  相似文献

Modeling of scale-dependent characteristics of mechanical properties of metal polycrystals is studied using both discrete dislocation dynamics and continuum crystal plasticity. The initial movements of dislocation arc emitted from a Frank-Read type dislocation source and bounded by surrounding grain boundaries are examined by dislocation dynamics analyses system and we find the minimum resolved shear stress for the FR source to emit at least one closed loop. When the grain size is large enough compared to the size of FR source, the minimum resolved shear stress levels off to a certain value, but when the grain size is close to the size of the FR source, the minimum resolved shear stress shows a sharp increase. These results are modeled into the expression of the critical resolved shear stress of slip systems and continuum mechanics based crystal plasticity analyses of six-grained polycrystal models are made. Results of the crystal plasticity analyses show a distinct increase of macro- and microscopic yield stress for specimens with smaller mean grain diameter. Scale-dependent characteristics of the yield stress and its relation to some control parameters are discussed.

By defining the yield stress in a latent hardening test as the first deviation from the elastic straight line, the yielding and hardening behavior on a latent system in the positive and negative slip direction was studied in aluminium single crystals. It is shown that the yield stresses on both the positive and negative latent systems are about equal to or a little lower than the maximum resolved shear stress in the primary test, but much higher than that of the active system. The influence of relative orientation and prestrain on latent hardening and initial work-hardening in the secondary test was also investigated, and it was found that there is a considerable effect on initial work-hardening, but none on latent hardening. With reasonable approximation, a hardening rule for single crystal could be proposed from the experimental results, that is, except for the yield stress on the system negative to the active system that is very low, hardening on the other systems is nearly the same as self-hardening.  相似文献

The present study aims at determining the influence of cyclic straining on the behavior of pure extruded magnesium. For this purpose, tensile, compressive and cyclic tests are performed (small plastic strains are applied (Δεp/2 = 0.1% and 0.4%). Deformation mechanisms (slip and twin systems) have been observed by TEM and the different critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) have been determined. Based on microscopic observations, a crystal-plasticity-based constitutive model has been developed. The asymmetry between tensile and compressive loadings mainly results from the activation of hard slip systems in tension (such as 〈a〉 pyramidal and prismatic and 〈c + a〉 pyramidal glides) and twinning in compression. It is shown that basal slip is very easy to activate even for small Schmid factors. Numerical simulations reveal that untwinning in tension subsequent to compression must be considered to correctly fit the experimental S-shaped hysteresis curves. TEM observations indicate also intense secondary slips or twins inside the mother twins under cyclic conditions, so that twinning in compression and dislocation glide in tension are affected by cycling. The polycrystalline model allows to predict slip activities and twin volume fraction evolutions.  相似文献

We study the deformation of a crack between a soft elastomer and a rigid substrate with finite interfacial slippage. It is assumed that slippage occurs when the interfacial shear traction exceeds a threshold. This leads to a slip zone ahead of the crack tip where the shear traction is assumed to be equal to the constant threshold. We perform asymptotic analysis and determine closed-form solutions describing the near-tip crack opening displacement and the corresponding stress distributions. These solutions are consistent with numerical results based on finite element analysis. Our results reveal that slippage can significantly affect the deformation and stress fields near the tip of the interface crack. Specifically, depending on the direction of slippage, the crack opening profile may appear more blunted or sharpened than the parabola arising from for the case of zero interfacial shear traction or free slippage. The detailed crack opening profile is determined by the constant shear traction in the slip zone. More importantly, we find that the normal stress perpendicular to the interface can increase or decrease when slippage occurs, depending on the direction of slippage and the shear traction in the slip zone.  相似文献

The interface between soil and structure can be referred to as a soil-structure system, and its behavior plays an important role in many geotechnical engineering practices. In this study, results are presented from a series of monotonic direct shear tests performed on a sand-structure interface under constant normal stiffness using the discrete element method (DEM). Strain localization and dilatancy behavior of the interface is carefully examined at both macroscopic and microscopic scales. The effects of soil initial relative density and normal stress on the interface shear behavior are also investigated. The results show that a shear band progressively develops along the structural surface as shear displacement increases. At large shear displacement a unique relationship between stress ratio and void ratio is reached in the shear band for a certain normal stress, indicating that a critical state exists in the shear band. It is also found that the thickness and void ratio of the shear band at the critical state decreases with increasing normal stress. Comparison of the DEM simulation results with experimental results provides insight into the shear behavior of a sand-structure interface and offers a means for quantitative modeling of such interfaces based on the critical state soil mechanics.  相似文献

A crystal-plasticity finite-element analysis of the loading-unloading process under uniaxial tension of a rolled magnesium alloy sheet was carried out, and the mechanism of the inelastic response during unloading was examined, focusing on the effects of basal and nonbasal slip systems. The prismatic and basal slip systems were mainly activated during loading, but the activation of the prismatic slip systems was more dominant. Thus the overall stress level during loading was determined primarily by the prismatic slip systems. The prismatic slip systems were hardly activated during unloading because the stress level was of course lower than that during loading. On the other hand, because the strength of the basal slip systems was much lower than that of the prismatic slip systems, the basal slip systems would be easily activated under the stress level during unloading in the opposite direction when their Schmid’s resolved shear stresses changed signs because of the inhomogeneity of the material. These results indicated that one explanation for the inelastic behavior during unloading was that the basal slip systems were primarily activated owing to their low strengths compared to that of the prismatic slip systems. Numerical tests using the sheets with random orientations and with the more pronounced texture were conducted to further examine the mechanism.  相似文献

The influence of extrusion under strong slip conditions on the extensional properties of linear low-density polyethylene was studied in this work. The material was extruded at two different temperatures under strong slip and no slip conditions, and was subsequently subjected to uniaxial elongational flow by means of a Rheotens device. Strong slip was evident through the elimination of sharkskin distortions and the stick-slip instability, as well as by the electrification of the extrudates. The extrudate swell was smaller in the presence of slip when comparing with no slip conditions at constant apparent shear rate, but it was found to be a unique function of the shear stress if comparison was performed at constant stress. The draw ratio and melt strength of the filaments obtained under slip conditions were larger compared to those without slip. In addition, draw resonance was postponed to higher draw ratios during the extrusion with strong slip at constant apparent shear rate. It is suggested that slip of the polymer at the die wall decreases the shear stress in the bulk, and therefore, restricts the disentanglement and orientation of macromolecules during flow, which subsequently produces the increase in draw ratio and melt strength during stretching.  相似文献

Large strain plastic deformation of metallic materials is investigated. The rate of change of the resolved shear stress applied to a slip system in a grain is expressed as a linear function of the slip rates. For this purpose, using an elastic-plastic analysis of the inclusion problem, the Jaumann rate of change of the stress state applied to the grain, together with its total spin, are obtained as a function of its deformation rate in the rigid-plastic case. It is shown that the existing stress has a significant influence on the accommodation tensors involved in the solution.  相似文献

Edge fracture is an instability of cone-plate and parallel plate flows of viscoelastic liquids and suspensions, characterised by the formation of a `crack' or indentation at a critical shear rate on the free surface of the liquid. A study is undertaken of the theoretical, experimental and computational aspects of edge fracture. The Tanner-Keentok theory of edge fracture in second-order liquids is re-examined and is approximately extended to cover the Criminale-Ericksen-Filbey (CEF) model. The second-order theory shows that the stress distribution on the semi-circular crack is not constant, requiring an average to be taken of the stress; this affects the proportionality constant, K in the edge fracture equation −N 2c = KΓ/a, where N 2c is the critical second normal stress difference, Γ is the surface tension coefficient and a is the fracture diameter. When the minimum stress is used, K = 2/3 as found by Tanner and Keentok (1983). Consideration is given to the sources of experimental error, including secondary flow and slip (wall effect). The effect of inertia on edge fracture is derived. A video camera was used to record the inception and development of edge fracture in four viscoelastic liquids and two suspensions. The recorded image was then measured to obtain the fracture diameter. The edge fracture phenomenon was examined to find its dependence on the physical dimensions of the flow (i.e. parallel plate gap or cone angle), on the surface tension coefficient, on the critical shear rate and on the critical second normal stress difference. The critical second normal stress difference was found to depend on the surface tension coefficient and the fracture diameter, as shown by the theory of Tanner and Keentok (1983); however, the experimental data were best fitted by the equation −N 2c = 1.095Γ/a. It was found that edge fracture in viscoelastic liquids depends on the Reynolds number, which is in good agreement with the inertial theory of edge fracture. Edge fracture in lubricating grease and toothpaste is broadly consistent with the CEF model of edge fracture. A finite volume method program was used to simulate the flow of a viscoelastic liquid, obeying the modified Phan-Thien-Tanner model, to obtain the velocity and stress distribution in parallel plate flow in three dimensions. Stress concentrations of the second normal stress difference (N 2) were found in the plane of the crack; the velocity distribution shows a secondary flow tending to aid crack formation if N 2 is negative, and a secondary flow tending to suppress crack formation if N 2 is positive. The general latent hardening law of single slip derived in the first paper of this series (Havner, Baker and Vause, 1979) is applied to an analysis of “overshooting” phenomena in bcc crystals in tension and compression. This new law, which predicts anisotropic hardening of latent slip systems, is based upon the simple theory of finite distortional crystal hardening introduced by Havner and Shalaby (1977).Because of historical ambiguities regarding identification of the slip plane in bcc metals, parallel analyses are presented corresponding to two separate criteria: (i) slip on {110}, {112} and {123} crystallographic planes only; and (ii) slip on the plane of maximum resolved shear stress containing a 〈111〉 direction. It is established that the new hardening law is a theory of “overshooting” in bcc crystals according to either identification of the slip plane.A qualitative comparison between theoretical results and two experimental papers on Fe crystals is included. The general difficulties in making comparisons with the experimental literature on finite distortional latent hardening are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Instrumented nanoindentation techniques have been widely used to characterize the small-scale mechanical behavior of materials. The elastic-plastic transition during nanoindentation is often indicated by a sudden displacement burst (pop-in) in the measured load-displacement curve. In defect-free single crystals, the pop-in is believed to be the result of homogeneous dislocation nucleation because the maximum shear stress corresponding to the pop-in load approaches the theoretical strength of the materials and because the statistical distribution of pop-in stresses is consistent with what is expected for a thermally activated process of homogeneous dislocation nucleation. This paper investigates whether this process is affected by crystallography and stress components other than the resolved shear stress. A Stroh formalism coupled with the two-dimensional Fourier transformation is used to derive the analytical stress fields in elastically anisotropic solids under Hertzian contact, which allows the determination of an indentation Schmid factor, namely, the ratio of maximum resolved shear stress to the maximum contact pressure. Nanoindentation tests were conducted on B2-structured NiAl single crystals with different surface normal directions. This material was chosen because it deforms at room temperature by {1 1 0}〈0 0 1〉 slip and thus avoids the complexity of partial dislocation nucleation. Good agreement is obtained between the experimental data and the theoretically predicted orientation dependence of pop-in loads based on the indentation Schmid factor. Pop-in load is lowest for indentation directions close to 〈1 1 1〉 and highest for those close to 〈0 0 1〉. In nanoindentation, since the stress component normal to the slip plane is typically comparable in magnitude to the resolved shear stress, we find that the pressure sensitivity of homogeneous dislocation nucleation cannot be determined from pop-in tests. Our statistical measurements generally confirm the thermal activation model of homogeneous dislocation nucleation. That is, the extracted dependence of activation energy on resolved shear stress is almost the same for all the indentation directions considered in this study, except for those close to 〈0 0 1〉. Because very high pop-in loads are measured for orientations close to 〈0 0 1〉, which implies a large contact area at pop-in, there is a higher probability of activating pre-existing dislocations in these orientations, which may explain the discrepancy near 〈0 0 1〉.  相似文献
