A holographic interferometric study was made of the focusing of reflected shock waves from a circular reflector. A diaphragmless shock tube was used for incident shock Mach numbers ranging from 1.03 to 1.74. Hence, the process of reflected shock wave focusing was quantitatively observed. It is found that a converging shock wave along the curved wall undergoes an unsteady evolution of mach reflection and its focusing is, therefore, subject to the evolution of the process of shock wave reflections. The collision of triple points terminates the focusing process at the geometrical focus. In order to interprete quantitatively these interferograms, a numerical simulation using an Eulerian solver combined with adaptive unstructured grids was carried out. It is found numerically that the highest density appears immediately after the triple point collision. This implies that the final stage of focusing is mainly determined by the interaction between shock waves and vortices. The interaction of finite strength shock waves, hence, prevents a curved shock wave from creating the infinite increase of density or pressure at a focal point which is otherwise predicted by the linear acoustic theory.

Shock wave propagation in a branched duct
The propagation of a planar shock wave in a 90° branched duct is studied experimentally and numerically. It is shown that the interaction of the transmitted shock wave with the branching segment results in a complex, two-dimensional unsteady flow. Multiple shock wave reflections from the duct's walls cause weakening of transmitted waves and, at late times, an approach to an equilibrium, one-dimensional flow. While at most places along the branched duct walls calculated pressures are lower than that existing behind the original incident shock wave, at the branching segment's right corner, where a head on-collision between the transmitted wave and the corner is experienced, pressures that are significantly higher than those existing behind the original incident shock wave are encountered. The numerically evaluated pressures can be accepted with confidence, due to the very good agreement found between experimental and numerical results with respect to the geometry of the complex wave pattern observed inside the branched duct. The head-on collision of a planar shock wave with a dust-air suspension is studied numerically. In this study the suspension is placed inside a conduit adjacent to its rigid end-wall. It is shown that as a result of this collision two different types of transmitted shock waves are possible, depending on the strength of the incident shock wave and the dust loading ratio in the suspension. One possibility is a partially dispersed shock wave, the other is a compression wave. The flow fields resulting in these two options are investigated. It is shown that in both cases, at late times after the head-on reflection of the transmitted shock wave from the conduit end-wall a negative flow (away from the end-wall) is evident. The observed flow behavior may suggest a kind of dust particle lifting mechanism that could shed new light on the complex phenomenon of dust entrainment behind sliding shock waves.

Observations are presented from calculations where a laminar spherical CH4/air flame was perturbed successively by incident and reflected shock waves reflected from a planar or concave wall. The two-dimensional axi-symmetric Navier–Stokes equations with detailed chemistry were used. The computational results were qualitatively validated with experiments which were performed in a standard shock tube arrangement. Under the influence of the incident shock wave, a Richtmyer–Meshkov instability is induced in the flame, and the distorted flame finally takes the form of two separated elliptical burning bubbles in the symmetric cross plane. Then, under subsequent interactions with the shock wave reflected from the planar or the concave wall, the flame takes a mushroom-like shape. Transverse waves produced by the shock reflection from the concave wall can compress the flame towards the axis, and the focusing shock generated on the concave wall will lead to a larger mushroom-like flame than that induced by the planar reflection.

The propagation of stress waves through a chain of discs has been studied experimentally. Optically transparent 20-mm diameter discs, made of epoxy, were loaded dynamically by head-on collision with an incident planar shock wave. The loading was done in a vertical shock tube. The head-on collision between the punch-plate, placed on top of the chain of discs, and the incident shock wave resulted in a head-on reflected shock wave inducing behind it a fairly uniform step-wise pressure pulse having duration of about 6 ms. The recorded fringe patterns of the stress field, in the discs-chain, show that the input pressure pulse was broken into several oscillating cycles. The back and forth bouncing of stress waves gave rise to two different modes of the contact stress oscillations, which continued until the overall stress reaches equilibrium with the input conditions. The registered propagation velocity of the stress wave was significantly lower than the appropriate speed of sound in the material from which the discs were made.

This study explores the interaction between shock waves and dual-element porous plates used to ameliorate the hazardous effects of these waves. Tests were performed in a shock tube to determine the effects that a pair of porous plates with directional resistance properties had on the initial peak pressure and impulse amelioration experienced by an end wall. Mild steel test specimens, ranging in porosity values from 6.6% to 41.1%, were mounted two at a time at different spacings in the test section. Each plate had directional properties, i.e. resistance to flow was different for flow coming from either side. Four plates were used, and 48 plate configurations were tested. Side wall and end wall pressure measurements and schlieren photographs were taken of the interactions. Tests were run at Mach numbers of 1.23, 1.35 and 1.42. The separation distances between the plate specimens were varied between 30 mm and 60 mm; however, the distance between the downstream plate and the end wall was kept constant at 140 mm for all tests. Both the initial peak pressure and impulse amelioration values were found to be dependant on the plate combination porosity. As the porosity of the combination increased, the amelioration values decreased. Complementary plate combinations produced differing results as different wave interactions occur when plate positions were interchanged. The porosity of the combined plates was found to have an overriding influence on the end wall peak pressure and impulse amelioration values when compared to the effect that plate arrangement (i.e. geometrical influences) had. Impulse amelioration values were found to increase as the separation distance between plates were increased. The amplitude of the end wall pressure trace was found to increase as the incident Mach number was increased. The significant attenuation of the incident shock wave obtained during this study is attributed to the system of multiple reflected and transmitted waves that are produced by the presence of the plate specimens in series. This increases the frequency of shock wave and barrier interactions, when compared to just using a single barrier.

Experimental investigation of the interaction of shock waves with textiles
Experimental studies have been performed to investigate the pressure amplification experienced behind a textile when exposed to a shock wave. Three textiles with different masses and air permeabilities were studied. Mach numbers for tests varied between 1.23 and 1.55. The distance between the back wall and the textile was varied between 3 and 15 mm. It was found that in most cases the presence of the textile led to a pressure amplification at the back wall. This amplification was dependent on the textile, Mach number and distance from the back wall. The processes causing the pressure amplification were identified by analysing pressure traces and contact shadowgraphs. It was found that when the incident wave impinges on the textile, a part is reflected upstream and a part is transmitted through the textile. The transmitted portion reflects back and forth in the gap between the textile and the back wall leading to a back wall pressure trace with a stepped profile. In addition, the textile moves towards the back wall causing compression waves to propagate towards the back wall. The combination of the stepped profile and the compression waves cause the pressure amplification. The contribution of each mechanism depends on the textile properties. Approximate wave diagrams have been constructed. Tests involving multiple layers of textiles are also discussed.

To prevent damage caused by accidental overpressure inside a closed duct (e.g. jet engine) safety valves are introduced. The present study experimentally investigates the dynamic opening of such valves by employing a door at the end of a shock tube driven section. The door is hung on an axis and is free to rotate, thereby opening the tube. The evolved flow and wave pattern due to a collision of an incident shock wave with the door, causing the door opening, is studied by employing a high speed schlieren system and recording pressures at different places inside the tube as well as on the rotating door. Analyzing this data sheds light on the air flow evolution and the behavior of the opening door. In the present work, emphasis is given to understanding the complex, unsteady flow developed behind the transmitted shock wave as it diffracts over the opening door. It is shown that both the door inertia and the shock wave strength influence the opening dynamic evolution, but not in the proportions that might be expected.
