Mild-slope (MS) type equations are depth-integrated models, which predict under appropriate conditions refraction and diffraction of linear time-harmonic water waves. By using a streamfunction formulation instead of a velocity potential one, the complementary mild-slope equation (CMSE) was shown to give better agreement with exact linear theory compared to other MS-type equations. The main goal of this work is to extend the CMSE model for solving two-layer flow with a free-surface. In order to allow for an exact reference, an analytical solution for a two-layer fluid over a sloping plane beach is derived. This analytical solution is used for validating the results of the approximated MS-type models. It is found that the two-layer CMSE model performs better than the potential based one. In addition, the new model is used for investigating the scattering of linear surface water waves and interfacial ones over variable bathymetry.

The article discusses the three-dimensional problem of unsteady-state waves arising on a free surface and at the interface between two liquids of different densities, with motion of the source. Analogous problems for steady-state waves in a two-layer liquid have been investigated in [1–6], and for unsteady-state waves in a homogeneous liquid in [7, 8].Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 137–146, July–August, 1970.  相似文献

Interfacial symmetric solitary waves propagating horizontally in a three-layer fluid with constant density of each layer are investigated. A fully nonlinear numerical scheme based on integral equations is presented. The method allows for steep and overhanging waves. Equations for three-layer conjugate flows and integral properties like mass, momentum and kinetic energy are derived in parallel. In three-layer fluids the wave amplitude becomes larger than in corresponding two-layer fluids where the thickness of a pycnocline is neglected, while the opposite is true for the propagation velocity. Waves of limiting form are particularly investigated. Extreme overhanging solitary waves of elevation are found in three-layer fluids with large density differences and a thick upper layer. Surprisingly we find that the limiting waves of depression are always broad and flat, satisfying the conjugate flow equations. Mode-two waves, obtained with a periodic version of the numerical method, are accompanied by a train of small mode-one waves. Large amplitude mode-two waves, obtained with the full method, are close to one of the conjugate flow solutions.  相似文献

The nonlinear waves in a stratified fluid of slowly varying depth are investigated in this paper. The model considered here consists of a two-layer incompressible constantdensity inviscid fluid confined by a slightly uneven bottom and a horizontal rigid wall. The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with varying coefficients is derived with the aid of the reductive perturbation method. By using the method of multiple scales, the approximate solutions of this equation are obtained. It is found that the unevenness of bottom may lead to the generation of so-called quasi-periodic waves and quasisolitary waves, whose periods, propagation velocities and wave profiles vary slowly. The relations of the period of quasiperiodic waves and of the amplitude, propagation velocity of quasi-solitary waves varying with the depth of fluid are also presented. The models with two horizontal rigid walls or single-layer fluid can be regarded as particular cases of those in this paper.Project Supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China.  相似文献

An approximate theoretical expression for the current induced by long internal solitary waves is presented when the ocean is continuously or two-layer stratified. Particular attention is paid to characterizing velocity fields in terms of magnitude, flow components, and their temporal evolution/spatial distribution. For the two-layer case, the effects of the upper/lower layer depths and the relative layer density difference upon the induced current are further studied. The results show that the horizontal components are basically uniform in each layer with a shear at the interface. In contrast, the vertical counterparts vary monotonically in the direction of the water depth in each layer while they change sign across the interface or when the wave peak passes through. In addition, though the vertical components are generally one order of magnitude smaller than the horizontal ones, they can never be neglected in predicting the heave response of floating platforms in gravitationally neutral balance. Comparisons are made between the partial theoretical results and the observational field data. Future research directions regarding the internal wave induced flow field are also indicated.  相似文献

The special class of periodic travelling waves which is known as roll waves is investigated for nonhomogeneous hyperbolic equations of gas dynamics type. In this Note these equations are applied to shallow water flows in inclined open channels, but the results obtained are more general and far-reaching. The necessary conditions for the existence of a roll wave are derived. It is shown that for a nonconvex pressure term, multi-shock configurations of roll waves of finite amplitude exist. A new type of periodic travelling wave, which corresponds to the slug flow regime in two-layer flows, is found. To cite this article: A. Boudlal, V.Yu. Liapidevskii, C. R. The waves induced by a moving dipole in a twofluid system are analytically and experimentally investigated. The velocity potential of a dipole moving horizontally in the lower layer of a two-layer fluid with finite depth is derived by superposing Green‘s functions of sources (or sinks). The far-field waves are studied by using the method of stationary phase. The effects of two resulting modes, i.e. the surfaceand internal-wave modes, on both the surface divergence field and the interfacial elevation are analyzed. A laboratory study on the internal waves generated by a moving sphere in a two-layer fluid is conducted in a towing tank under the same conditions as in the theoretical approach. The qualitative consistency between the present theory and the laboratory study is examined and confirmed.  相似文献

In linear isotropic elasticity, cases exist where pure shear waves are possible even in bounded media; these have a nondispersive mode with propagation speed equal to that in an infinite medium. For these cases, consideration of a two-layer medium shows the existence of dispersion which vanishes only with equality of the propagation speeds. The present study uses the method of asymptotic expansions; a uniformly valid approximation is obtained to describe the speed and dispersive nature of these waves. The elegance of this approach is brought out by derivation of the basic result of this study viz., Jeffrey equation to describe the farfield structure of these waves. This work was done towards partial fulfillment of the requirements for Ph. The mathematical model of inhomogeneous fluid motion in a Hele–Shaw cell is proposed. Based on this model the equations for describing two-layer flows and development of roll waves at the interface are derived. Conditions of roll waves existence are formulated in terms of Whitham criterion. Numerical calculations of the interface position are provided. It is shown that small perturbations of the interface in the inlet section of the channel lead to the roll waves for certain parameters of the flow. Two-parametric class of exact solutions corresponding to the roll waves regime is obtained. Diagrams of critical depths of roll waves development are constructed.  相似文献

The problem of steady-state internal waves in a weakly stratified two-layer fluid with a density that is constant in the lower layer and depends exponentially on the depth in the upper layer is considered. The spectral properties of the equations of small perturbations of a homogeneous piecewise-constant flow are described. A nonlinear ordinary differential equation describing solitary waves and smooth bores on the layer interface is obtained using the Boussinesq expansion in a small parameter.  相似文献

Internal waves propagating in an idealized two-layer atmosphere are studied numerically. The governing equations are the inviscid anelastic equations for a perfect gas atmosphere. The numerical formulation eliminates all variables in the linear terms except vertical velocity, which are then treated implicitly. Nonlinear terms are treated explicitly. The basic state is a two-layer flow with continuous density at the interface. Each layer has a unique constant for the Brunt–Väisälä frequency. Waves are forced at the bottom of the domain, are periodic in the horizontal direction, and form a finite wave packet in the vertical. The results show that the wave packet forms a mean flow that is confined to the interface region that persists long after the wave packet has moved away. Large-amplitude waves are forced to break beneath the interface.  相似文献

Results are presented for the initiation of slug-type structures from stratified 2D, two-layer pressure-driven channel flow. Good agreement is obtained with an Orr–Sommerfeld-type stability analysis for the growth rate and wave speed of very small disturbances. The numerical results elucidate the non-linear evolution of the interface shape once small disturbances have grown substantially. It is shown that relatively short waves (which are the most unstable according to linear theory) saturate when the length of the periodic domain is equally short. In longer domains, coalescence of short waves of small-amplitude is shown to lead to large-amplitude long waves, which subsequently exhibit a tendency towards slug formation. The non-uniform distribution of the interfacial shear stress is shown to be a significant mechanism for wave growth in the non-linear regime.  相似文献

The scattering of water waves by a flexible porous membrane barrier in a two-layer fluid having a free surface is analysed in two dimensions. The membrane barrier is extended over the entire water depth in a two-layer fluid, each fluid being of finite depth. In the present analysis, linear wave theory and small amplitude membrane response are assumed. The porous membrane barrier is tensioned and pinned at both the free surface and the seabed. The associated mixed boundary value problem is reduced to a linear system of equations by utilizing a general orthogonality relation along with least-squares approximation method. Because of the flow discontinuity at the interface, the eigenfunctions involved have a discontinuity at the interface and the orthogonality relation used is a generalization of the classical one corresponding to a single-layer fluid. The reflection and transmission coefficients for the surface and internal modes, the free surface and interface elevations and the nondimensional membrane deflection are computed for various physical parameters like the nondimensional tension parameter, porous-effect parameter, fluid density ratio, ratio of water depths of the two fluids to analyse the efficiency of a porous membrane as a wave barrier in the two-layer fluid.  相似文献

The linear stability of finite-amplitude interfacial gravity solitary waves propagating in a two-layer fluid is investigated analytically focusing on the occurrence of an exchange of stability. We make an asymptotic analysis for small growth rates of infinitesimal disturbances, and explicitly obtain their growth rates near an exchange of stability. The result indicates that an exchange of stability occurs at every stationary value of the total energy of the solitary waves. It also gives us information whether the number of growing modes increases or decreases after experiencing the exchange of stability. We apply these analytical results to specific interfacial solitary waves, and find various features on their stability that are not seen in the case of surface solitary waves.  相似文献

The dynamics of two-dimensional waves of small but finite amplitude are theoretically studied for the case of a two-layer system bounded by a horizontal top and bottom. It is shown that for relatively large steady-state flow velocities and at certain fluid depth ratios the vertical velocity profile is nonlinear. An evolutionary equation governing the fluid interface disturbances and allowing for the long-wave contributions of the layer inertia and surface tension, the weak nonlinearity of the waves, and the unsteady friction on all the boundaries of the system is derived. Steady-state solutions of the cnoidal and solitary wave type for the disturbed flow are determined without regard for dissipation losses. It is found that the magnitude and the direction of the flow can alter not only the lengths of the waves but also their polarity.__________Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Academii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, 2005, pp. 143–158. This paper reports that an experimental study is conducted to examine the dynamics of the outflow in two-layer exchange flows in a channel connecting between two water bodies with a small density difference. The experiments reveal the generation of Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instabilities within the hydraulically sub-critical flow region of the channel. During maximal exchange, those KH instabilities develops into large-amplitude KH waves as they escape the channel exit into the reservoir. The propagation speed of those waves, their generation frequency and their amplitudes are studied. The dynamics of the outflow and these waves are directly linked to the hydraulic conditions of the exchange flow within the channel.  相似文献

Thin and ultra-thin shear-driven liquid films in a narrow channel are a promising candidate for the thermal management of advanced semiconductor devices in earth and space applications. Such flows experience complex, and as yet poorly understood, two-phase flow phenomena requiring significant advances in fundamental research before they could be broadly applied. This paper focuses on the results obtained in experiments with locally heated shear-driven liquid films in a flat mini-channel. A detailed map of the flow sub-regimes in a shear-driven liquid film flow of water and FC-72 have been obtained for a 2 mm channel operating at room temperature. While the water film can be smooth under certain liquid/gas flow rates, the surface of an intensively evaporating film of FC-72 is always distorted by a pattern of waves and structures. It was found, that when heated the shear-driven liquid films are less likely to rupture than gravity-driven liquid films. For shear-driven water films the critical heat flux was found of up to 10 times higher than that for a falling film, which makes shear-driven films (annular or stratified two-phase flows) more suitable for cooling applications than falling liquid films.  相似文献
