This work consists in evaluating algebraically and numerically the influence of a disturbance on the spectral values of a diagonalizable matrix. Thus, two approaches will be possible; to use the theorem of disturbances of a matrix depending on a parameter, due to Lidskii and primarily based on the structure of Jordan of the no disturbed matrix. The second approach consists in factorizing the matrix system, and then carrying out a numerical calculation of the roots of the disturbances matrix characteristic polynomial. This problem can be a standard model in the equations of the continuous media mechanics. During this work, we chose to use the second approach and in order to illustrate the application, we choose the Rayleigh–Bénard problem in Darcy media, disturbed by a filtering through flow. The matrix form of the problem is calculated starting from a linear stability analysis by a finite elements method. We show that it is possible to break up the general phenomenon into other elementary ones described respectively by a disturbed matrix and a disturbance. We consider an elasticity problem in a domain Ω()F(), where Ω is an open bounded domain in R3, F() is a connected nonperiodic set in Ω like a net of slender bars, and is a parameter characterizing the microstructure of the domain. We consider the case of a surface distribution of the set F(), i.e., for sufficiently small , the set F() is concentrated in arbitrary small neighbourhood of a surface Γ. Considerable effort is currently being extended to examine the fundamental mechanisms of combustion instabilities and develop methods allowing predictions of these phenomena. One central aspect of this problem is the dynamical response of the flame to incoming perturbations. This question is examined in the present article, which specifically considers the response of premixed swirling flames to perturbations imposed on the upstream side of the flame in the feeding manifold. The flame response is characterized by measuring the unsteady heat release induced by imposed velocity perturbations. A flame describing function is defined by taking the ratio of the relative heat release rate fluctuation to the relative velocity fluctuation. This quantity is determined for a range of frequencies and for different levels of incoming velocity perturbations. The flame dynamics is also documented by calculating conditional phase averages of the light emission from the flame and taking the Abel transform of these average images to obtain the flame geometry at various instants during the cycle of oscillation. A correlation algorithm is proposed to measure full three-dimensional displacement fields in a three-dimensional domain. The chosen kinematic basis for this measurement is based on continuous finite-element shape functions. It is furthermore proposed to account for the presence of strong discontinuities, similarly to extended finite element schemes, with a suited enrichment of the kinematics with discontinuities supported by a (crack) surface. An optimization of the surface geometry is proposed based on correlation residuals. The procedure is applied to analyze one loading cycle of a fatigue-cracked nodular graphite cast iron sample by using computed tomography pictures. Subvoxel crack openings are revealed and measured. Boundary integral equations are well suitable for the analysis of seismic waves propagation in unbounded domains. Formulations in elastodynamics are well developed. In contrast, for the dynamic analysis of viscoelastic media, there are very seldom formulations by boundary integral equations. In this Note, we propose a new and simple formulation of time harmonic viscoelasticity with the Zener model, which reduces to classical elastodynamics if a compatibility condition is satisfied by boundary conditions. Intermediate variables which satisfy the classical elastodynamic equations are introduced. It makes it possible to utilize existing numerical tools of time harmonic elastodynamics. We study experimentally the impact of a plastic bead on a rotating wall made of steel (velocity Ω; radial position x0). The results show that the restitution coefficient is directly function of the impact velocity x0Ω and is invariant by changing frame reference. The influence of the height of release of the particle on its angular velocity after impact is also studied. We observe an increase of the angular velocity with height followed by a saturation. We propose an interpretation for this evolution considering that the particle may roll without sliding during all the impact. The first bifurcation in a lid-driven cavity characterized by three-dimensional Taylor–Görtler-Like instabilities is investigated for a cubical cavity with spanwise periodic boundary conditions at Re=1000. The modes predicted by a global linear stability analysis are compared to the results of a direct numerical simulation. The amplification rate, and the shape of the three-dimensional perturbation fields from the direct numerical simulation are in very good agreement with the characteristics of the steady S1 mode from the stability analysis, showing that this mode dominates the other unstable unsteady modes. The quasistatic evolution of the mechanical state of a piezoelectric body with damage is numerically studied in this paper. Both damage and piezoelectric effects are included into the model. The variational formulation leads to a coupled system composed of two linear variational equations for the displacement field and the electric potential, and a nonlinear parabolic variational equation for the damage field. The existence of a unique weak solution is stated. Then, a fully discrete scheme is introduced by using a finite element method to approximate the spatial variable and an Euler scheme to discretize the time derivatives. Error estimates are derived on the approximate solutions, from which the linear convergence of the algorithm is deduced under suitable regularity conditions. A large scale experiment has been carried out on an experimental facility to study the mass transfer of trichloroethylene (TCE) in a partially saturated porous medium. 5 liters of TCE have been infiltrated in the vadose zone of the site. The mass transfer of TCE from the vapor plume in the unsaturated zone towards the top of groundwater was quantified based on an analytical and a numerical approach. The mass of the pollutant measured at the exit of the model is well represented by the two mathematical approaches. It is found that the transfer of TCE towards the groundwater from the vapor plume is weak, which corresponds to 285 g of TCE, approximately 4% of the initial mass. Strained flames are commonly used to study the structure of reactive layers and describe the local properties of turbulent combustion. This model is attractive because constant strain rate flames only depend on a transverse coordinate and can be treated as a one-dimensional problem. This configuration is considered in a multidimensional context in which the strained flow is obtained by two counterflowing streams of reactants. It is used to examine the structure of transcritical strained flames in which one or two reactants are injected at a high pressure exceeding the critical value while their temperature is below the critical value. Calculations are carried out in a two-dimensional domain to test numerical models developed for multidimensional simulations and test thermodynamic and transport models devised to deal with high pressure real gas effects. Multidimensional strained flame calculations carried out in this study serve to check the validity of a new version of a Navier–Stokes flow solver (AVBP) conceived to deal with transcritical combustion of interest to liquid propellant rocket applications. This article describes the basic elements of such simulations and discusses results of calculations. The spectra of the elasticity and piezo-electricity systems for a solid with a sharp peak point on the boundary, which is free of traction, are not discrete. The atomization of liquids into a spray is an important process in many industrial applications and particularly in the aero-engine sector. Conventional air-blast injectors in aircraft engines today use aerodynamic shearing effects to atomize the liquid fuel. However, at operating conditions where the air velocity is below 30 m/s (such as ground start and high altitude restart) the atomization quality is poor. Consequently combustion is less efficient with high pollutant emissions. The objective of this study is to validate a new concept of injector which couples the shearing effects with the principle of ultrasonic atomization. The latter consists of using piezoelectric actuators to generate the oscillations of a wall in contact with the liquid film. This excitation perpendicular to the liquid film surface creates Faraday instabilities at the liquid/air interface. The thermal contact between layers plays a key role in the behaviour of composite particles (mechanofused) subjected to a high temperature jet (example of two layers metal/ceramic particles under plasma spraying). The elastic solution in a vicinity of a re-entrant wedge can be described by a Williams like expansion in terms of powers of the distance to a point on the edge. This expansion has a particular structure due to the invariance of the problem by translation parallel to the edge. We show here that some terms, so-called primary solutions, derive directly from solutions to the 2-D corner problem posed in the orthogonal cross section of the domain. The others, baptized shadow functions, derive of the primary solutions by integration along the axis parallel to the edge. This 3-D Williams expansion is shown to be equivalent to the edge expansion proposed by Costabel et al. [M. Costabel, M. Dauge, Z. A new formulation is proposed to describe immiscible compressible two-phase flow in porous media. The main feature of this formulation is the introduction of a global pressure. The resulting equations are written in a fractional flow formulation and lead to a coupled system which consists of a nonlinear parabolic (the global pressure equation) and a nonlinear diffusion–convection one (the saturation equation) which can be efficiently solved numerically. We study the initial-boundary value problems for a system of operator-differential equations describing Ishlinskii type viscoelastoplastic body longitudinal vibrations with rapidly oscillating nonsmooth coefficients and initial data. The main feature is an presence of hysteresis Prandtl–Ishlinskii operator. We rigorously justify the passage to the corresponding limit initial-boundary value problems for a system of two-scale homogenized operator-integro-differential equations, including the existence theorem for the limit problems.
