Three-dimensional elasticity solution for static analysis of functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) annular plates with and without elastic foundations through using state-space based differential quadrature method (SSDQM) at different boundary conditions is presented in this paper. The material properties are assumed to have an exponent-law variation along the thickness. A semi-analytical approach which makes use of state-space method in thickness direction and one-dimensional differential quadrature method in radial direction is utilized to obtain the mechanical behavior of FGP annular plates. The state variables include a combination of electric potential, electric displacement, three mechanical displacement parameters and three stress parameters. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the convergency and accuracy of the present method. Both closed circuit and open circuit effects are studied and the influences of the Winkler and shearing layer elastic coefficients of the foundations, the material property graded index, radius, thickness, mechanical load and boundary conditions on the deflection response of the FGP annular plates are investigated. The new results can be used as a benchmark solutions for future researches.

The three-dimensional free vibration analysis of a multi-directional functionally graded piezoelectric(FGP) annular plate resting on two parameter(Pasternak)elastic foundations is investigated under different boundary conditions. The material properties are assumed to vary continuously along the radial and thickness directions and have exponent-law distribution. A semi-analytical approach named the state space based differential quadrature method(SSDQM) is used to provide an analytical solution along the thickness using the state space method(SSM) and an approximate solution along the radial direction using the one-dimensional differential quadrature method(DQM).The influence of the Winkler and shear stiffness of the foundation, the material property graded variations, and the circumferential wave number on the non-dimensional natural frequency of multi-directional FGP annular plates is studied.

Abstract

In this paper, three-dimensional static and free vibration analysis of functionally graded graphene platelets-reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) truncated conical shells, cylindrical shells and annular plates with various boundary conditions is carried out within the framework of elasticity theory. The main contribution of the present work is that formulation for free vibration and bending behavior of the FG-GPLRC truncated conical shell based on theory of elasticity has not yet been reported. Additionally, formulation and solution for cylindrical shell and annular plate are derived by changing the semi vertex angle in formulation and solution of FG-GPLRC truncated conical shell. A semi-analytical solution is proposed base on employing differential quadrature method (DQM) together with state-space technique. Validity of current approach is assessed by comparing its numerical results with those available in the literature. An especial attention is drawn to the role of GPLs weight fraction, patterns of GPLs distribution through the thickness direction, geometrical parameters such as semi-vertex angle, length to mid-radius ratio on natural frequencies and bending characteristics. Numerical results reveal that desirable static and free vibration response (such as lower radial deflection and higher natural frequencies) can be achieved by locating more square shaped GPLs near inner and outer surfaces.

The free vibration analysis of a rotating cylindrical shell with an analytical method is investigated. The shell is considered as a sandwich structure, where the middle layer is a functionally graded material(FGM) shell, and it is surrounded by two piezoelectric layers. Considering piezoelectric materials to be functionally graded(FG),the material properties vary along the thickness direction as one innovation of this study.Applying the first-order shear deformation theory(FSDT), the equations of motion of this electromechanical system are derived as the partial differential equations(PDEs) using Hamilton's principle. Then, the Galerkin procedure is used to discretize the governing equations, and the present results are compared with the previously published results for both isotropic and FGM shells to verify the analytical method. Finally, the effects of FGM and functionally graded piezoelectric material(FGPM) properties as well as the thickness ratio and the axial and circumferential wave numbers on the natural frequencies are studied. Moreover, the Campbell diagram is plotted and discussed through the governing equations. The present results show that increasing the non-homogeneous index of the FGM decreases the natural frequencies on the contrary of the effect of non-homogeneous index of the FGPM.

This research investigates three-dimensional free vibration analysis of four-parameter continuous grading fiber reinforced (CGFR) cylindrical panels resting on Pasternak foundations by using generalized power-law distribution. The functionally graded orthotropic panel is simply supported at the edges, and it is assumed to have an arbitrary variation of matrix volume fraction in the radial direction. A four-parameter power-law distribution presented in literature is proposed. Symmetric and asymmetric volume fraction profiles are presented. Suitable displacement functions that identically satisfy the boundary conditions at the simply supported edges are used to reduce the equilibrium equations to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients, which are solved by generalized differential quadrature method, and natural frequency is obtained. The fast rate of convergence of the method is demonstrated, and to validate the results, comparisons are made with the available solutions for functionally graded isotropic shells with/without elastic foundations. The effect of the elastic foundation stiffness parameters and various geometrical parameters on the vibration behavior of the CGFR cylindrical panels is investigated. This work mainly contributes to illustrate the influence of the four parameters of power-law distributions on the vibration behavior of functionally graded orthotropic cylindrical panels resting on elastic foundation. This paper is also supposed to present useful results for continuous grading of matrix volume fraction in the thickness direction of a cylindrical panel on elastic foundation and comparison with similar discrete laminated composite cylindrical panel.

Free vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) thin-to-moderately thick annular plates subjected to thermal environment and supported on two-parameter elastic foundation is investigated. The material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent and graded in the thickness direction. The equations of motion and the related boundary conditions, which include the effects of initial thermal stresses, are derived using the Hamilton’s principle based on the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The initial thermal stresses are obtained by solving the thermoelastic equilibrium equations. Differential quadrature method (DQM) as an efficient and accurate numerical tool is adopted to solve the thermoelastic equilibrium equations and the equations of motion. The formulations are validated by comparing the results in the limit cases with the available solutions in the literature for isotropic and FG circular and annular plates. The effects of the temperature rise, elastic foundation coefficients, the material graded index and different geometrical parameters on the frequency parameters of the FG annular plates are investigated. The new results can be used as benchmark solutions for future researches.

In this paper free vibration of continuous grading fiber reinforced (CGFR) annular plates on an elastic foundation, based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, for different boundary conditions at the circular edges is investigated. The foundation is described by the Pasternak or two-parameter model. The CGFR annular plates have an arbitrary variation of fiber volume fraction in the thickness direction. A semi-analytical approach composed of differential quadrature method (DQM) and series solution is adopted to solve the equations of motion. The fast rate of convergence of the method is demonstrated and comparison studies are carried out to establish its very high accuracy and versatility. Some new results for the natural frequencies of the plate are prepared, which include the effects of elastic coefficients of foundation, boundary conditions, material and geometrical parameters. Besides, results for CGFR plate with arbitrary variation of fiber volume fraction in the thickness direction of the plate are compared with discrete laminated composite plate. The main contribution of this work is to present useful results for continuous grading of fiber reinforcement in the thickness direction of a plate on an elastic foundation and comparison with similar discrete laminated composite plate. The interesting and new results show that non-dimensional natural frequency parameters of a functionally graded fiber volume fraction is larger than that of a discrete laminated and close to that of a 2-layer. The new results can be taken as the benchmark solutions for those from numerical methods and future researches.

Free vibration of functionally graded(FG) annular sector plates embedded with two piezoelectric layers is studied with a generalized differential quadrature(GDQ)method. Based on the first-order shear deformation(FSD) plate theory and Hamilton's principle with parameters satisfying Maxwell's electrostatics equation in the piezoelectric layers, governing equations of motion are developed. Both open and closed circuit(shortly connected) boundary conditions on the piezoelectric surfaces, which are respective conditions for sensors and actuators, are accounted for. It is observed that the open circuit condition gives higher natural frequencies than a shortly connected condition. For the simulation of the potential electric function in piezoelectric layers, a sinusoidal function in the transverse direction is considered. It is assumed that properties of the FG material(FGM) change continuously through the thickness according to a power distribution law.The fast rate convergence and accuracy of the GDQ method with a small number of grid points are demonstrated through some numerical examples. With various combinations of free, clamped, and simply supported boundary conditions, the effects of the thicknesses of piezoelectric layers and host plate, power law index of FGMs, and plate geometrical parameters(e.g., angle and radii of annular sector) on the in-plane and out-of-plane natural frequencies for different FG and piezoelectric materials are also studied. Results can be used to predict the behaviors of FG and piezoelectric materials in mechanical systems.

In this paper, free vibration of a circular plate composed of a transversely isotropic functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) placed in a uniform magnetic field is investigated. Material properties are assumed to depend on the thickness of the circular plate and they are expressed as the same exponential function of h. The problem of free vibration for the transversely isotropic FGPM circular plate with clamped and simply supported boundary conditions is solved by means of the state space method. Numerical examples and some useful discussions are given to demonstrate the significant influence of material inhomogeneity, and adopting a certain value of the graded index can optimize structures of the circular plate. This will be of particular importance in modern engineering design.

Three-dimensional elasticity solutions for static bending of thick functionally graded plates are presented using a hybrid semi-analytical approach-the state-space based differential quadrature method (SSDQM). The plate is generally supported at four edges for which the two-way differential quadrature method is used to solve the in-plane variations of the stress and displacement fields numerically. An approximate laminate model (ALM) is exploited to reduce the inhomogeneous plate into a multi-layered laminate, thus applying the state space method to solve analytically in the thickness direction. Both the convergence properties of SSDQM and ALM are examined. The SSDQM is validated by comparing the numerical results with the exact solutions reported in the literature. As an example, the Mori-Tanaka model is used to predict the effective bulk and shear moduli. Effects of gradient index and aspect ratios on the bending behavior of functionally graded thick plates are investigated.

Based on linear three-dimensional piezoelasticity, the Legendre orthogonal polynomial series expansion approach is used for determining the wave characteristics in hollow cylinders composed of the functionally graded piezoelectric materials (FGPM) with open circuit. The displacement and electric potential components, expanded in a series of Legendre polynomials, are introduced into the governing equations along with position-dependent material constants so that the solution of the wave equation is reduced to an eigenvalue problem. Dispersion curves for FGPM and the corresponding non-piezoelectric hollow cylinders are calculated to show the piezoelectric effect. The influence of the ratio of radius to thickness is discussed. Electric potential and displacement distributions are used to show the piezoelectric effect on the flexural torsional mode. The influence of the polarizing direction on the piezoelectric effect is illustrated. For the radial and axial polarization, the piezoelectric effect reacts mostly on the longitudinal mode. For circumferential polarization, the piezoelectric effect reacts mostly on the torsional mode. In the FGPM hollow cylinder, piezoelectricity can weaken the guided wave dispersion.

An analytic solution to the axisymmetric problem of a long, radially polarized, hollow cylinder composed of functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) rotating about its axis at a constant angular velocity is presented. For the case that electric, thermal and mechanical properties of the material obey different power laws in the thickness direction, distributions for radial displacement, stresses and electric potential in the FGPM hollow cylinder are determined by using the theory of electrothermoelasticity. Some useful discussions and numerical examples are presented to show the significant influence of material nonhomogeneity, and adopting suitable graded indexes and applying suitable geometric size and rotating velocity ω may optimize the rotating FGPM hollow cylindrical structures. This will be of particular importance in modern engineering application.

This paper deals with free vibration analysis of functionally graded thick circular plates resting on the Pasternak elastic foundation with edges elastically restrained against translation and rotation.Governing equations are obtained based on the first order shear deformation theory(FSDT) with the assumption that the mechanical properties of plate materials vary continuously in the thickness direction.A semi-analytical approach named differential transform method is adopted to transform the differential governing equations into algebraic recurrence equations. And eigenvalue equation for free vibration analysis is solved for arbitrary boundary conditions.Comparison between the obtained results and the results from analytical method confirms an excellent accuracy of the present approach.Afterwards, comprehensive studies on the FG plates rested on elastic foundation are presented. The effects of parameters, such as thickness-to-radius,material distribution, foundation stiffness parameters, different combinations of constraints at edges on the frequency, mode shape and modal stress are also investigated.

Solved is the problem of a crack in a functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) bonded to two elastic surface layers. It is assumed that the elastic stiffness, piezoelectric constant, and dielectric permittivity of the FGPM vary continuously along the thickness of the strip. The outside layers are under antiplane mechanical loading and in-plane electric loading. The solution involves solving singular integral equations by application of the Gauss–Jacobi integration formula. Numerical calculations are carried out to obtain the energy density factors. Their variations with the geometric, loading and material parameters are shown graphically.

Elasticity solutions are presented for bending and thermal deformations of functionally graded beams with various end conditions, using the state space-based differential quadrature method. The beams are assumed to be macroscopically isotropic, with Young’s modulus varying exponentially along the thickness and longitudinal directions, while Poisson’s ratio remaining constant. The state space method is adopted to obtain analytically the thickness variation of the elastic field and, when coupled with differential quadrature, the longitudinal discretization can be analyzed in an approximate manner. This approach is then validated by comparing the numerical results with the exact solutions for a special functionally graded beam and with finite element solutions. The influences of material gradient indices on the response of bi-directional functionally graded beams are finally investigated.

In the present paper, bending and stress analyses of two-directional functionally graded (FG) annular plates resting on non-uniform two-parameter Winkler-Pasternak founda- tions and subjected to normal and in-plane-shear tractions is investigated using the exact three- dimensional theory of elasticity. Neither the in-plane shear loading nor the influence of the two- directional material heterogeneity has been investigated by the researchers before. The solution is obtained by employing the state space and differential quadrature methods. The material proper- ties are assumed to vary in both transverse and radial directions. Three different types of variations of the stiffness of the foundation are considered in the radial direction: linear, parabolic, and sinu- soidal. The convergence analysis and the comparative studies demonstrate the high accuracy and high convergence rate of the present approach. A parametric study consisting of evaluating effects of different parameters (e.g., exponents of the material properties laws, the thickness to radius ratio, trends of variations of the foundation stiffness, and different edge conditions) is carried out. The results are reported for the first time and are discussed in detail.

In the present paper, the differential transformation method is employed to develop a semi-analytical solution for free vibration and modal stress analyses of two-dimensional functionally graded circular plates resting on two-parameter elastic foundations. Simultaneous variations of the material properties in the radial and transverse directions are described by a general function. Some comprehensive sensitivity analyses are performed, and the natural frequencies and the modal stresses are extracted for free, simply supported, and clamped boundary conditions and different combinations of the geometric, material, and foundation parameters. Therefore, very complex combinations of the material properties, boundary conditions, and parameters of the elastic foundation are considered in the present semi-analytical solution approach. Thus, many novelties are included in the present research. Comparisons made between the present results and results reported by well-known references for special cases treated before, have confirmed accuracy and efficiency of the present approach. Moreover, the paper treats some interesting problems, for the first time.
