Numerical simulation of three-dimensional flows generally involves solving large-scale problems. In this paper we consider the stream-tube method in three-dimensional duct flows. The analysis uses the concept of stream tubes in a mapped computational domain of the physical domain where the streamlines are parallel and straight. The incompressibility equation is automatically verified and the primary unknowns of the problem are, in addition to the pressure, the transformation functions between the two domains. It is also shown that the flow may be computed by considering successive subdomains (the stream tubes). This results in a reduction of computing time and storage area. Incompressible viscous and elastic liquids involving memory-integral equations may be considered in the flow simulations. This part of the paper examines three-dimensional flows of Newtonian fluids. The method is applied to the flow in a duct involving a threefold rotational symmetry, where the discretized relevant equations are solved by using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm.  相似文献

We introduce a stabilized finite element method for the 3D non‐Newtonian Navier–Stokes equations and a parallel domain decomposition method for solving the sparse system of nonlinear equations arising from the discretization. Non‐Newtonian flow problems are, generally speaking, more challenging than Newtonian flows because the nonlinearities are not only in the convection term but also in the viscosity term, which depends on the shear rate. Many good iterative methods and preconditioning techniques that work well for the Newtonian flows do not work well for the non‐Newtonian flows. We employ a Galerkin/least squares finite element method, with stabilization parameters adjusted to count the non‐Newtonian effect, to discretize the equations, and the resulting highly nonlinear system of equations is solved by a Newton–Krylov–Schwarz algorithm. In this study, we apply the proposed method to some inelastic power‐law fluid flows through the eccentric annuli with inner cylinder rotation and investigate the robustness of the method with respect to some physical parameters, including the power‐law index and the Reynolds number ratios. We then report the superlinear speedup achieved by the domain decomposition algorithm on a computer with up to 512 processors. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A spectral method for the analysis of stationary flows of second‐order fluids in rough micro‐channels is developed. The algorithm employs a fixed computational domain with the boundaries of the flow domain being located inside the computational domain. The physical boundary conditions are enforced using the immersed boundary conditions concept. The algorithm relies on the Fourier expansions in the flow direction and the Chebyshev expansions in the transverse direction. Various tests confirm spectral accuracy of the algorithm. This study investigates a fictitious domain model for the numerical solution of various incompressible viscous flows. It is based on the so‐called Navier–Stokes/Brinkman and energy equations with discontinuous coefficients all over an auxiliary embedding domain. The solid obstacles or walls are taken into account by a penalty technique. Some volumic control terms are directly introduced in the governing equations in order to prescribe immersed boundary conditions. The implicit numerical scheme, which uses an upwind finite volume method on staggered Cartesian grids, is of second‐order accuracy in time and space. A multigrid local mesh refinement is also implemented, using the multi‐level Zoom Flux Interface Correction (FIC) method, in order to increase the precision where it is needed in the domain. At each time step, some iterations of the augmented Lagrangian method combined with a preconditioned Krylov algorithm allow the divergence‐free velocity and pressure fields be solved for. The tested cases concern external steady or unsteady flows around a circular cylinder, heated or not, and the channel flow behind a backward‐facing step. The numerical results are shown in good agreement with other published numerical or experimental data. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The new capability has been added as the numerical method for modeling volumeless and thin rigid bodies to the direct forcing immersed boundary (DFIB) method. The DFIB approach is based on adding a virtual force to the Navier–Stokes equations of incompressible flow to account for the interaction between the fluid and structures. The volume of a solid function (VOS) identifies the stationary or moving solid structures in a given fluid domain. A new VOS-based algorithm was developed to identify thin, rigid structure boundary points in fluid flow and ensure that the fluid cannot cross through the boundary of a thin rigid structure while moving or stationary. The DFIB method was first validated in a three-dimensional (3D) turbulent flow over a circular cylinder. The large-eddy simulation simulated the turbulent flow scales. The proposed algorithm was tested using a 3D turbulent flow past a stationary and rotating Savonius wind turbine that functions as a thin, rigid body. The validation results showed that the selected DFIB approach, combined with the novel algorithm, could simulate a thin, volumeless, rigid structure that is stationary and rotating in incompressible turbulent flows. The current method is also applicable for two-way fluid-structure interaction problems.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the formulation and the evaluation of a hybrid solution method that makes use of domain decomposition and multigrid principles for the calculation of two-dimensional compressible viscous flows on unstructured triangular meshes. More precisely, a non-overlapping additive domain decomposition method is used to coordinate concurrent subdomain solutions with a multigrid method. This hybrid method is developed in the context of a flow solver for the Navier-Stokes equations which is based on a combined finite element/finite volume formulation on unstructured triangular meshes. Time integration of the resulting semi-discrete equations is performed using a linearized backward Euler implicit scheme. As a result, each pseudo time step requires the solution of a sparse linear system. In this study, a non-overlapping domain decomposition algorithm is used for advancing the solution at each implicit time step. Algebraically, the Schwarz algorithm is equivalent to a Jacobi iteration on a linear system whose matrix has a block structure. A substructuring technique can be applied to this matrix in order to obtain a fully implicit scheme in terms of interface unknowns. In the present approach, the interface unknowns are numerical fluxes. The interface system is solved by means of a full GMRES method. Here, the local system solves that are induced by matrix-vector products with the interface operator, are performed using a multigrid by volume agglomeration method. The resulting hybrid domain decomposition and multigrid solver is applied to the computation of several steady flows around a geometry of NACA0012 airfoil.  相似文献

A new boundary element method is described for calculation of the steady incompressible laminar flows. The method is based on the well-known SIMPLE algorithm. The new boundary element method allows one to find the fields of the pressure and velocity corrections without inner iterations, thus reducing the computational time drastically. This makes it different from the method developed by Patankar and Spalding.32 However, the new method demands a much larger computer strorage. The boundary integral equations are discretized with the help of constant boundary elements and constant cells. The values of the integrals along the boundary elements and the cells for the two-dimensional domain are found analytically. To preserve the stability in the iteration process, under-relaxation for the convection terms is used. This paper gives the results of calculations of the flows between two plane parallel plates at Re = 20 and Re = 200, the flows in a square cavity with a moving upper lid at Re = 1 and Re = 100 and the flow in a plane channel with sudden symmetric expansion at Re =46·6.  相似文献

Start-up flows of second grade fluids in domains with one finite dimension   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
A number of unidirectional transient flows of a second grade fluid in a domain with one finite dimension are studied. The method of integral transforms (Fourier, Hankel or Laplace) is applied to obtain exact solutions. A general theorem on start-up flows for second grade fluids is presented that allows us to determine unidirectional flows of second grade fluids once the corresponding solution is known within the context of the Navier-Stokes theory. In the process of obtaining solutions for the fluid of second grade, we find several new exact solutions within the context of the classical Navier-Stokes theory.  相似文献

A new numerical algorithm for attached cavitation flows is developed. A cavitation model is implemented in a viscous Navier–Stokes solver. The liquid–vapour interface is assumed as a free surface boundary of the computation domain. Its shape is determined with an iterative procedure to match the cavity surface to a constant pressure boundary. The pressure distribution, as well as its gradient along the wall, is taken into account in updating the cavity shape iteratively. A series of computations are performed for the cavitating flows across three kinds of headform/cylinder bodies: conic, ogival and hemispheric heads. A range of cavitation numbers is investigated for each headform/cylinder body. The obtained results are reasonable and the iterative procedure of cavity shape updating is quite stable. The superiority of the developed cavitation model and algorithm is demonstrated. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The method of asymptotic partial domain decomposition for thin tube structures (finite unions of thin cylinders) is revisited. Its application to the Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows in great systems of vessels is considered. The possibility of a parallelization of its algorithm is discussed for linear and non-linear models.  相似文献

In the present study, the preconditioned incompressible Navier‐Stokes equations with the artificial compressibility method formulated in the generalized curvilinear coordinates are numerically solved by using a high‐order compact finite‐difference scheme for accurately and efficiently computing the incompressible flows in a wide range of Reynolds numbers. A fourth‐order compact finite‐difference scheme is utilized to accurately discretize the spatial derivative terms of the governing equations, and the time integration is carried out based on the dual time‐stepping method. The capability of the proposed solution methodology for the computations of the steady and unsteady incompressible viscous flows from very low to high Reynolds numbers is investigated through the simulation of different 2‐dimensional benchmark problems, and the results obtained are compared with the existing analytical, numerical, and experimental data. A sensitivity analysis is also performed to evaluate the effects of the size of the computational domain and other numerical parameters on the accuracy and performance of the solution algorithm. The present solution procedure is also extended to 3 dimensions and applied for computing the incompressible flow over a sphere. Indications are that the application of the preconditioning in the solution algorithm together with the high‐order discretization method in the generalized curvilinear coordinates provides an accurate and robust solution method for simulating the incompressible flows over practical geometries in a wide range of Reynolds numbers including the creeping flows.  相似文献

This paper describes a three-step finite element method and its applications to unsteady incompressible fluid flows. Stability analysis of the one-dimensional pure convection equation shows that this method has third-order accuracy and an extended numerical stability domain in comparison with the Lax--Wendroff finite element method. The method is cost-effective for incompressible flows because it permits less frequent updates of the pressure field with good accuracy. In contrast with the Taylor-Galerkin method, the present method does not contain any new higher-order derivatives, which makes it suitable for solving non-linear multidimensional problems and flows with complicated boundary conditions. The three-step finite element method has been used to simulate unsteady incompressible flows. The numerical results obtained are in good agreement with those in the literature.  相似文献

Numerical solutions of viscoelastic flows are demonstrated for a time marching, semi‐implicit Taylor–Galerkin/pressure‐correction algorithm. Steady solutions are sought for free boundary problems involving combinations of die‐swell and stick‐slip conditions. Flows with and without drag flow are investigated comparatively, so that the influence of the additional component of the drag flow may be analysed effectively. The influence of die‐swell is considered that has application to various industrial processes, such as wire coating. Solutions for two‐dimensional axisymmetric flows with an Oldroyd‐B model are presented that compare favourably with the literature. The study advances our prior fixed domain formulation with this algorithm, into the realm of free‐surface viscoelastic flows. The work involves streamline‐upwind/Petrov–Galerkin weighting and velocity gradient recovery techniques that are applied upon the constitutive equation. Free surface solution reprojection and a new pressure‐drop/mass balance scheme are proposed. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Particulate flow is of great importance from both the scientific and engineering points of view. Owing to the complexity of particle-flow interactions, direct numerical simulations (DNS) of inertial particulate flow with finite-size particles have been limited to a very small number of particles, while the industrial applications involve larger numbers with many orders of magnitude. This article presents a parallel implementation of a fictitious domain method for the DNS of particulate flows. The method is thoroughly tested and its parallel performance on distributed memory clusters is evaluated on a large-scale problem. Finally, we present the results for the separation of 21,336 particles of two different densities in a viscous fluid. Although there is still a significant gap between DNS and the industrial applications, the present algorithm allows to simulate significantly large number of particles so that a meaningful statistical analysis can be performed. This will help in the development of new closure relations for the averaged models of multiphase flows.  相似文献

Inflow and outflow boundary conditions are essential for the application of computational fluid dynamics to many engineering scenarios. In this paper we present a new boundary condition implementation that enables the simulation of flow through permeable boundaries in the Lagrangian mesh‐free method, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). Each permeable boundary is associated with an inflow or outflow zone outside the domain, in which particles are created or removed as required. The analytic boundary condition is applied by prescribing the appropriate variables for particles in an inflow or outflow zone, and extrapolating other variables from within the domain. Characteristic‐based non‐reflecting boundary conditions, described in the literature for mesh‐based methods, can be implemented within this framework. Results are presented for simple one‐dimensional flows, quasi‐one‐dimensional compressible nozzle flow, and two‐dimensional flow around a cylinder at Reynolds numbers of 40 and 100 and a Mach number of 0.1. These results establish the capability of SPH to model flows through open domains, opening a broad new class of applications. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Unstructured meshes allow easily representing complex geometries and to refine in regions of interest without adding control volumes in unnecessary regions. However, numerical schemes used on unstructured grids have to be properly defined in order to minimise numerical errors. An assessment of a low Mach algorithm for laminar and turbulent flows on unstructured meshes using collocated and staggered formulations is presented. For staggered formulations using cell‐centred velocity reconstructions, the standard first‐order method is shown to be inaccurate in low Mach flows on unstructured grids. A recently proposed least squares procedure for incompressible flows is extended to the low Mach regime and shown to significantly improve the behaviour of the algorithm. Regarding collocated discretisations, the odd–even pressure decoupling is handled through a kinetic energy conserving flux interpolation scheme. This approach is shown to efficiently handle variable‐density flows. Besides, different face interpolations schemes for unstructured meshes are analysed. A kinetic energy‐preserving scheme is applied to the momentum equations, namely, the symmetry‐preserving scheme. Furthermore, a new approach to define the far‐neighbouring nodes of the quadratic upstream interpolation for convective kinematics scheme is presented and analysed. The method is suitable for both structured and unstructured grids, either uniform or not. The proposed algorithm and the spatial schemes are assessed against a function reconstruction, a differentially heated cavity and a turbulent self‐igniting diffusion flame. It is shown that the proposed algorithm accurately represents unsteady variable‐density flows. Furthermore, the quadratic upstream interpolation for convective kinematics scheme shows close to second‐order behaviour on unstructured meshes, and the symmetry‐preserving is reliably used in all computations. This study develops a direct optimal growth algorithm for three-dimensional transient growth analysis of perturbations in channel flows which are globally stable but locally unstable. Different from traditional non-modal methods based on the OrrSommerfeld and Squire(OSS) equations that assume simple base flows, this algorithm can be applied to arbitrarily complex base flows. In the proposed algorithm, a reorthogonalization Arnoldi method is used to improve orthogonality of the orthogonal basis of the Krylov subspace generated by solving the linearized forward and adjoint Navier-Stokes(N-S) equations. The linearized adjoint N-S equations with the specific boundary conditions for the channel are derived, and a new convergence criterion is proposed. The algorithm is then applied to a one-dimensional base flow(the plane Poiseuille flow) and a two-dimensional base flow(the plane Poiseuille flow with a low-speed streak)in a channel. For one-dimensional cases, the effects of the spanwise width of the channel and the Reynolds number on the transient growth of perturbations are studied. For two-dimensional cases, the effect of strength of initial low-speed streak is discussed. The presence of the streak in the plane Poiseuille flow leads to a larger and quicker growth of the perturbations than that in the one-dimensional case. For both cases, the results show that an optimal flow field leading to the largest growth of perturbations is characterized by high-and low-speed streaks and the corresponding streamwise vortical structures. The lift-up mechanism that induces the transient growth of perturbations is discussed. The performance of the re-orthogonalization Arnoldi technique in the algorithm for both one-and two-dimensional base flows is demonstrated, and the algorithm is validated by comparing the results with those obtained from the OSS equations method and the crosscheck method.  相似文献

This paper studies the application of two‐level Schwarz algorithms to several models of computational fluid dynamics. The purpose is to build an algorithm suitable for elliptic and convective models. The subdomain approximated solution relies on the incomplete lower‐upper factorization. The algebraic coupling between the coarse grid and the Schwarz preconditioner is discussed. The deflation method and the balancing domain decomposition method are studied for introducing the coarse‐grid correction as a preconditioner. Standard coarse grids are built with the characteristic or indicator functions of the subdomains. The building of a set of smooth basis functions (analogous to smoothed‐aggregation methods) is considered. A first test problem is the Poisson problem with a discontinuous coefficient. The two options are compared for the standpoint of coarse‐grid consistency and for the gain in scalability of the global Schwarz iteration. The advection–diffusion model is then considered as a second test problem. Extensions to compressible flows (together with incompressible flows for comparison) are then proposed. Parallel applications are presented and their performance measured. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new method for direct simulations of flexible filament suspensions in a non‐zero Reynolds number flow is developed. For fluid domain, simulations are based on a lattice Boltzmann equation. For solid domain, a slender solid body is discretized into a chain of consecutive spherical segments contacting each other. A constraint force algorithm is proposed to warrant constant bonding distance between two neighbouring segments and non‐slip velocity conditions at the contacting points so that the flexible filament moves and rotates as a whole body. The fibre could be bent and twisted in the model. Non‐linear inertial interactions between fluid and flexible filament can be naturally studied by using this model embedded in the lattice Boltzmann scheme. The present flexible fibre method is tested by using a rigid particle method when the fibre stiffness is very large and by comparing the present results with theoretical and experimental results. It is demonstrated that the present results have a reasonable accuracy and that the computational results are consistent with the existed experimental results at non‐zero Reynolds number flows.
