An experimental study has been performed to determine the melting heat transfer characteristics of a horizontal ice cylinder immersed in an immiscible liquid. Vegetable oil, which was contained within a horizontal heated copper tube, was adopted as a testing liquid. A bubble-free ice cylinder was situated at the center of the tube. The experiments were carried out for the heated tube temperatures ranging from 8.0 to 30.0 °C, while for the cooled tube temperatures from ч.0 to ⪡.0 °C. The flow pattern of the liquid and the ice-liquid interface shape of the ice cylinder being formed through melting were extensively observed and recorded photographically. The local/average heat transfer coefficient along the ice cylinder at steady state was determined as a function of the heated tube temperature as well as the cooled tube temperature. The measurements show that the ice layer profiles at steady state are quite similar irrespective of the thermal conditions.

Visual observations reveal a complicated flow in the liquid melt and a melting front configuration resulting from horizontal ice plate melting from above into a 20 wt% calcium chloride aqueous solution. The initial temperature of the ice plate and the mixture are both −5°C. Small scale “mountain and valley” structures (∼1 mm) appear on the flat melting front just after melting begins, which have been called “sharkskin”. Innumerable upward and downward flows appear near the sharkskin and are controlled by its “mountain and valley” structure. These typical flows will considerably promote the melting of the ice plate to be 30% larger as compared to the numerically predicted results assuming a flat melting front (i.e., without the sharkskin), and also by three times larger compared with the results for melting from below.  相似文献

In this paper, the melting process of a PCM inside an inclined compound enclosure partially filled with a porous medium is theoretically addressed using a novel deformed mesh method. The sub-domain area of the compound enclosure is made of a porous layer and clear region. The right wall of the enclosure is adjacent to the clear region and is subject to a constant temperature of Tc. The left wall, which is connected to the porous layer, is thick and thermally conductive. The thick wall is partially subject to the hot temperature of Th. The remaining borders of the enclosure are well insulated. The governing equations for flow and heat transfer, including the phase change effects and conjugate heat transfer at the thick wall, are introduced and transformed into a non-dimensional form. A deformed grid method is utilized to track the phase change front in the solid and liquid regions. The melting front movement is controlled by the Stefan condition. The finite element method, along with Arbitrary Eulerian–Lagrangian (ALE) moving grid technique, is employed to solve the non-dimensional governing equations. The modeling approach and the accuracy of the utilized numerical approach are verified by comparison of the results with several experimental and numerical studies, available in the literature. The effect of conjugate wall thickness, inclination angle, and the porous layer thickness on the phase change heat transfer of PCM is investigated. The outcomes show that the rates of melting and heat transfer are enhanced as the thickness of the porous layer increases. The melting rate is the highest when the inclination angle of the enclosure is 45°. An increase in the wall thickness improves the melting rate.

Mixed convection from upward flow of hot air to a cooled vertical pipe   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An experimental study had been carried out to investigate the buoyancy-opposed mixed convection from an upward flow of hot air to a vertical pipe with a cooled surface. The investigation covered a wide range of flow regime, ranging from the “free convection significant” to the “forced convection significant” conditions. Reynolds number of the flow extended from 966 to 14780, whereas the Buoyancy parameter, Ω [=Grd/(Red)2], varied from 0.008 to 2.77. A steady stream of hot air at a moderate pressure and a Prandtl number of 0.707 was arranged to flow upward through a vertical steel pipe, whose external wall was cooled uniformly by ambient air at 20°C. Test section of the vertical pipe was 1625 mm long with an internal diameter of 156 mm and an external diameter of 166 mm. Air temperature at inlet of the test section was varied from 40°C to 70°C. Both radial temperature and velocity profiles of the airflow were measured at inlet and exit of the test section respectively. Temperatures along the pipe wall were also measured. Non-dimensional expression for the prediction of the average heat transfer coefficient of the mixed convection from an upward flow of hot air to a vertical pipe with a cooled surface was developed from the experimental results. Convection heat transfer was found to impair when the flow is laminar and was enhanced for turbulent flow condition. Received on 20 July 1998  相似文献

An experimental and analytical investigation pertaining to the effect of density inversion of water on the free convective heat transfer and the onset of free convection in a horizontal melt layer of ice heated by upper rigid surface is carried out. Temperatures of the upper surface are varied from 1°C to 15°C, with Rayleigh number ranging from 2 × 102 to 1 × 105. From the present study, it can be demonstrated both experimentally and analytically that the density inversion of water plays an influential role in such a melt layer and the onset of free convection and the free convective heat transfer are considerably affected by the temperature of upper rigid surface T2, in the case of T2 ≤ 8° C, unlike the results obtained for common fluids without density inversion.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the melting of a vertical ice plate into a calcium chloride aqueous solution inside a rectangular cavity. The initial temperature of the ice plate and the mixture are both −5°C and the initial concentration of the mixture is 20 wt%. The effect of the liquid height H, the width W, the aspect ratio of the liquid region A (=H/W) and the initial ice plate thickness δ i on the transient melting mass per unit melting front area, M, is mainly considered numerically. M keeps a similar value in spite of H varied for A = 1 at early melting stage, however, becomes considerably influenced by H as melting progresses. The ice plate melts influenced by A for H = 20 mm fixed at early melting stage due to the fast development of the stagnant region and M decreases with increasing A (=1∼ 10). A dimensionless correlation of the transient melting mass, the aspect ratio and the melting time was presented under the restricted condition of H = 20 mm.  相似文献

Extensive measurements of the intensive cooling of hot-rolled wires with temperatures between 1000 °C and 1100 °C are analysed. The analysis proves the existence of a convection-controlled boiling region, which has been previously observed by few authors in the case of high mass fluxes and high liquid subcooling. This region is characterised by an independence of the heat flux of the surface temperature. The heat flux depends essentially on the Reynolds number, the main influence parameter of the single phase convection, and on the liquid subcooling. Received on 13 September 1999  相似文献

Local heat transfer coefficients and temperature distributions within the fluid for air flow around a 180° square-sectioned bend have been measured. The ratio of bend radius to hydraulic diameter of the duct is 3.35:1 and the flow entering the bend is sensibly fully developed. Measurements of air and wall temperatures span a range of Reynolds numbers from 9.9 × 103 to 9.2 × 104 with the principal emphasis given to the case of Re ? 5.6 × 104. This Reynolds number and geometric configuration coincide with that of a companion LDA study carried out by Chang et al1 which provides detailed maps of the mean and turbulent velocity fields. The data show that by 45° into the bend the heat transfer coefficients on the inner convex wall of the bend drop markedly while those on the other walls increase. By 90° the ratio of the heat transfer coefficients at the mid positions of the concave and convex walls is more than 2:1. Nevertheless this ratio is less than would be anticipated from considering two-dimensional flow on weakly curved surfaces. There is a general consistency between the velocity and the temperatyre field data in the heated fluid  相似文献

The mixed convection heat transfer of upward molten salt flow in a vertical annular duct is experimentally and numerically studied. The heat transfer performances of mixed convection are measured under Reynolds number 2,500–12,000 and inlet temperature 300–400 °C, and Nusselt number of molten salt flow with cooled inner wall monotonically increases with buoyancy number. The mixed convection is further simulated by low-Reynolds number k-ε model and variable properties, and the heat transfer tendency from numerical results agrees with that from experiments. At low Reynolds number, the natural convection plays more important role in the mixed convection. As the buoyancy number rises, the thickness of flow boundary layer near the inner wall increases, while the effective thermal conductivity remarkably rises, so the enhanced heat transfer of mixed convection is mainly affected by the effective thermal conductivity due to turbulent diffusion.  相似文献

This paper discusses the results of a study related to natural convection cooling of a heat source located on the bottom wall of an inclined isosceles triangular enclosure filled with a Cu water-nanofluid. The right and left walls of the enclosure are both maintained cold at constant equal temperatures, while the remaining parts of the bottom wall are insulated. The study has been carried out for a Rayleigh number in the range 104 ≤ Ra ≤ 106, for a heat source length in the range 0.2 ≤ ε ≤0.8, for a solid volume fraction in the range 0 ≤ ?≤0.06 and for an inclination angle in the range 0° ≤ δ≤45°. Results are presented in the form of streamline contours, isotherms, maximum temperature at the heat source surface and average Nusselt number. It is noticed that the addition of Cu nanoparticles enhances the heat transfer rate and therefore cooling effectiveness for all values of Rayleigh number, especially at low values of Ra. The effect of the inclination angle becomes more noticeable as one increases the value of Ra. For high Rayleigh numbers, a critical value for the inclination angle of δ = 15° is found for which the heat source maximum temperature is highest.  相似文献

This work presents the experimental research on the steady laminar natural convection heat transfer of air in three vertical thin rectangular channels with different gap clearance. The much higher ratio of width to gap clearance (60–24) and the ratio of length to gap clearance (800–320) make the rectangular channels similar with the coolant flow passage in plate type fuel reactors. The vertical rectangular channels were composed of two stainless steal plates and were heated by electrical heating rods. The wall temperatures were detected with the K-type thermocouples which were inserted into the blind holes drilled in the steal plates. Also the air temperatures at the inlet and outlet of the channel were detected. The wall heat fluxes added to the air flow were calculated by the Fourier heat conduction law. The heat transfer characteristics were analyzed, and the average Nusselt numbers in all the three channels could be well correlated with the Rayleigh number or the modified Rayleigh number in a uniform correlation. Furthermore, the maximum wall temperatures were investigated, which is a key parameter for the fuel’s integrity during some accidents. It was found that even the wall heat flux was up to 1500 W/m2, the maximum wall temperature was lower than 350 °C. All this work is valuable for the plate type reactor’s design and safety analysis.  相似文献

In this study, two dimensional heat/mass transfer characteristics and flow features were investigated in a rectangular wavy duct with various corrugation angles. The test duct had a width of 7.3 mm and a large aspect ratio of 7.3 to simulate two dimensional characteristics. The corrugation angles used were 100°, 115°, 130°, and 145°. Numerical analysis using the commercial code FLUENT, was used to analyze the flow features. In addition, the oil-lamp black method was used for flow visualization. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the corrugated walls were measured using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The Reynolds number, based on the duct hydraulic diameter, was varied from 700 to 5,000. The experimental results and numerical analysis showed interesting and detailed features in the wavy duct. Main flow impinged on upstream of a pressure wall, and the flow greatly enhanced heat/mass transfer. On a suction wall, however, flow separation and reattachment dominantly affected the heat/mass transfer characteristics on the wall. As the corrugation angle decreased (it means the duct has more sharp turn), the region of flow stagnation at the front part of the pressure wall became wider. Also, the position of flow reattachment on the suction wall moved upstream as the corrugation angle decreased. A high heat transfer rate appeared at the front part of the pressure wall due to main-flow impingement, and at the front part of the suction wall due to flow reattachment. The high heat/mass transfer region by the main-flow impingement and the circulation flow induced at a valley between the pressure and suction walls changed with the corrugation angle and the Reynolds number. As the corrugation angle decreased, the flow in the wavy duct changed to transition to turbulent flow earlier.  相似文献

Natural convection heat transfer in an inclined fin attached square enclosure is studied both experimentally and numerically. Bottom wall of enclosure has higher temperature than that of top wall while vertical walls are adiabatic. Inclined fin has also adiabatic boundary conditions. Numerical solutions have been done by writing a computer code in Fortran platform and results are compared with Fluent commercial code and experimental method. Governing parameters are Rayleigh numbers (8.105 ≤ Ra ≤ 4 × 106) and inclination angle (30° ≤ and ≤ 120°). The temperature measurements are done by using thermocouples distributed uniformly at the wall of the enclosure. Remarkably good agreement is obtained between the predicted results and experimental data. A correlation is also developed including all effective parameters on heat transfer and fluid flow. It was observed that heat transfer can be controlled by attaching an inclined fin onto wall.  相似文献

This paper describes a numerical method for the study of combined natural convection and radiation in a rectangular, two-dimensional cavity containing a non-participating (i.e. transparent) fluid. One wall of the cavity is isothermal, being heated either by solar radiation or independently. The opposite wall is partially transparent, permitting radiation exchanges between the cavity and its surroundings and/or the Sun; that wall also exchanges heat by convection from its external surface to the surroundings. The other two walls are adiabatic: convection and radiation there are balanced, so that there is no heat transfer through those walls. The equations of motion and energy are solved by finite difference methods. Coupled to these equations are the radiative flux boundary conditions which are used to determine the temperature distribution along the non-isothermal walls. A two-band radiation model has been employed. Results are presented for a square cavity with a vertical hot wall at 150 °C, the ambient at 20 °C and 104 ? Ra ? 3 × 105, in the absence of direct insolation. The effects on the flow and heat transfer in the cavity of radiation and external convection have been examined. More extensive results will be presented in subsequent papers.  相似文献

Spray cooling of heated surfaces is common in many industrial applications, notably steelmaking, because of its high heat dissipating ability. Control of the surface heat flux rate contributes to better products; it is shown that the heat transfer rate depends on the mass fraction of liquid. Quantitative information regarding the parameters affecting spray cooling is relatively scarce. The rate of heat transfer from a plate due to impinging of an array of water jets was investigated numerically through the solution of heat conduction equation. The simulation is carried out for eight different sprayers, in the range of ejected fluid pressure between 1 bar and 3 bars. Experimental data are used to study the influence of the function g(x, y), of dispersed water, on heat transfer variations across the surface at the temperature of 600°C. Curves were generated showing time histories of the steel temperature for the removal of high heat fluxes of the order of 300 W/cm2. It was also observed that for lower temperatures, the predicted local heat transfer coefficient increased significantly. In memory of H. Mzad’s father Mebrouk.  相似文献

An experimental study was performed to determine the melting heat transfer characteristics along a horizontal heated circular tube immersed in a solid-air-liquid three-phase fluidized liquid ice bed. A mixture of fine ice particles and ethylene glycol acqueous solution was adopted as the liquid ice for the test. Measurements were carried out for a range of parameters such as airflow rate, heated tube diameter, and initial concentration of acqueous binary solution. It was found that the heat transfer coefficient for the fluidized liquid ice bed might be more than 20 times as large as that for the fixed liquid ice bed.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical study of the conjugate heat transfer (natural convection, surface thermal radiation and conduction) in a square cavity with turbulent flow. The cavity has one vertical isothermal wall, two horizontal adiabatic walls and one vertical semitransparent wall with a selective coating applied to the inner side to control the solar radiation transmission. Later on the semitransparent wall is replaced with another one without the selective coating. The mathematical model for the turbulent flow in the cavity was solved using the finite volume method. The system had the following conditions: the uniform temperature in the isothermal wall was 21 °C, the external ambient temperature was fixed at 35 °C and on the semitransparent wall the direct normal solar irradiation of 750 W/m2 was considered constant. The Rayleigh number was varied in the range of 109 ? Ra ? 1012 by changing the lengths of the cavity from 0.70 m to 6.98 m, respectively. The results show that, even though the air temperature of the cavity with the solar control film coating semitransparent wall (case A) is higher compared with the one without solar film coating (case B), the total amount of heat going through the cavity is lower compared to the one going through the cavity without solar control film. The total amount of energy transferred to the air in cavity for the case A was 41.98% less than for the case B. A set of correlations for the Nusselt number was obtained for both cases considering the conjugate heat transfer.  相似文献

A waste heat transportation system––trans-heat (TH) system––is quite attractive that uses the latent heat of a phase change material (PCM). The purpose of this paper is to study the thermophysical properties of various sugars and sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT) as PCMs for a practical TH system and the heat transfer property between PCM selected and heat transfer oil, by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and a heat storage tube. As a result, erythritol, with a large latent heat of 344 kJ/kg at melting point of 117°C, high decomposition point of 160°C and excellent chemical stability under repeated phase change cycles was found to be the best PCM among them for the practical TH system. In the heat release experiments between liquid erythritol and flowing cold oil, we observed foaming phenomena of encapsulated oil, in which oil droplet was coated by solidification of PCM.  相似文献

The heat transfer, pressure drop and flow patterns during flow boiling of R407C in a horizontal microfin tube have been investigated. The microfin tube is made of copper with a total fin number of 55 and a helix angle of 15°. The fin height is 0.24 mm and the inner tube diameter at fin root is 8.95 mm. The test tube is 1 m long. It is heated electrically. The experiments have been performed at saturation temperatures between −30°C and +10°C. The mass flux was varied between 25 and 300 kg/m2/s, the heat flux from 20,000 W/m2 down to 1,000 W/m2. The vapour quality was kept constant at 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 at the inlet and 0.8, 1.0 at the outlet, respectively. The measured heat transfer coefficient is compared with the correlations of Cavallini et al., Shah as well as Zhang et al. Cavallini’s correlation contains seven experimental constants. After fitting these constants to our measured values, the correlation achieves good agreement. The measured pressure drop is compared to the correlations of Pierre, Kuo and Wang as well as Müller-Steinhagen and Heck. The best agreement is achieved with the correlation of Kuo and Wang. Almost all values are calculated within an accuracy of ±30%. The flow regimes were observed. It is shown, that changes in the flow regime affect the heat transfer coefficient significantly.  相似文献
