A phenomenological model is proposed for characterizing rate-independent hysteresis exhibited by preconditioned soft tissues. The preconditioned tissue is modeled as an isotropic composite of a hyperelastic component and a dissipative (inelastic) component. Specifically, the constitutive equations are hyperelastic in the sense that the stress is determined by derivatives of a strain energy function. Inelasticity of the dissipative component is controlled by a yield function with different functional forms for the hardening variable during deformation loading and unloading. The constitutive equations proposed in this paper are simple. In particular, they depend on only seven material constants: three controlling the response of the elastic component and the remainder controlling the response of the dissipative component. More importantly, the material constants can be determined to match rather general loading and unloading behavior. It is observed that the hysteretic response of the model compares well with experimental data for passive uniaxial loading/unloading of Manduca muscle. Moreover, the present model treats partial loading and reloading of preconditioned tissue as elastic–plastic response, which is different from the treatment of pseudo-elastic models used in the literature.  相似文献

A set of three-dimensional constitutive equations is proposed for modeling the nonlinear dissipative response of soft tissue. These constitutive equations are phenomenological in nature and they model a number of physical features that have been observed in soft tissue. The equations model the tissue as a composite of a purely elastic component and a dissipative component, both of which experience the same total dilatation and distortion. The stress response of the purely elastic component depends on dilatation, distortion and the stretch of material fibers, whereas the stress response of the dissipative component depends on distortional deformation only. The equations are hyperelastic in the sense that the stress is obtained by derivatives of a strain energy function, and they are properly invariant under superposed rigid body motions. In contrast with standard viscoelastic models of tissues, the proposed constitutive model includes the total deformation rate in evolution equations that can reproduce the observed physical feature that the hysteresis loops of most biological soft tissues are nearly independent of strain rate (Biomechanics, Mechanical Properties of Living Tissues, second ed. (1993)). Material constants are determined which produce good agreement with uniaxial stress experiments on superficial musculoaponeurotic system and facial skin.  相似文献

The total stress response of material is decomposed into a sum of an equilibrium stress response and a non-equilibrium overstress response. Correspondingly, the rate-independent intrinsic time and the rate-dependent intrinsic time are defined respectively. Additional hardening functions for describing the isotropic and anisotropic nonproportional effects are assumed to be related to the accumulation of plastic strain component along the normal of equilibrium stress trajectory, in which the effects of geometry of the loading path are included. An endochronic constitutive model for rate-dependent, nonproportional cyclic plasticity is formulated and applied to simulate the stress responses of stainless steel XCrNi18.9 for some typical loading programs at different loading rates. A comparison between predicted results and experimental ones by Haupt and Lion shows that the former are in agrreement with the latter.  相似文献

Summary  This paper presents a viscoplastic model for PTFE designed to simulate numerically PTFE shaft seals. A rate-independent elastoplastic model with an endochronic flow rule is coupled in series with a rate-dependent Kelvin model, which has a highly nonlinear damper. In contrast to previous models for PTFE, this unified approach is suitable for numerical simulation of the loading and the stress relaxation behaviour at ambient temperature. Relaxation experiments for metallic materials and solid polymers have exhibited nonlinear dependence of stress relaxation on prior loading rate; the relaxed stress associated with the fastest prior strain rate has the smallest magnitude at the end of the same relaxation periods. Modeling capability for the basic feature of relaxation behavior is qualitatively investigated in the context of unified state variable theory. Unified constitutive models are categorized into three general classes according to the rate dependence of kinematic hardening rule, which defines the evolution of the back (equilibrium) stress and is the major difference among constitutive models. The first class of models adopts the nonlinear kinematic hardening rule proposed by Armstrong and Frederick. In this class, the back stress appears to be rate-independent under loading and subsequent relaxation conditions. In the second class of models, a stress rate term is incorporated into the Armstrong–Frederick rule and the back stress then becomes rate-dependent during relaxation condition even though it remains rate-independent under loading condition. The final class proposed here includes a new nonlinear kinematic hardening rule that causes the back stress to be rate-dependent all the time. It is shown that the apparent rate dependence of the back stress during relaxation enables constitutive models to predict the influence of prior loading rate on relaxation behavior.  相似文献

The nature of elastomeric material demands the consideration of finite deformations, nonlinear elasticity including damage as well as rate-dependent and rate-independent dissipative properties. While many models accounting for these effects have been refined over time to do better justice to the real behavior of rubber-like materials, the realistic simulation of the elastoplastic characteristics for filled rubber remains challenging. The classical elastic-ideal-plastic formulation exhibits a distinct yield-surface, whereas the elastoplastic material behavior of filled rubber components shows a yield-surface free plasticity. In order to describe this elastoplastic deformation of a material point adequately, a physically based endochronic plasticity model was developed and implemented into a Finite Element code. The formulation of the ground state elastic characteristics is based on Arruda and Boyce (1993) eight-chain model. The evolution of the constitutive equations for the nonlinear endochronic elastoplastic response are derived in analogy to the Bergström–Boyce finite viscoelasticity model discussed by Dal and Kaliske (2009).  相似文献

Complex (nonlinear) unloading behavior following plastic straining has been reported as a significant challenge to accurate springback prediction. More fundamentally, the nature of the unloading deformation has not been resolved, being variously attributed to nonlinear/reduced modulus elasticity or to inelastic/“microplastic” effects. Unloading-and-reloading experiments following tensile deformation showed that a special component of strain, deemed here “Quasi-Plastic-Elastic” (“QPE”) strain, has four characteristics. (1) It is recoverable, like elastic deformation. (2) It dissipates work, like plastic deformation. (3) It is rate-independent, in the strain rate range 10−4-10−2/s, contrary to some models of anelasticity to which the unloading modulus effect has been attributed. (4) To first order, the evolution of plastic properties occurs during QPE deformation. These characteristics are as expected for a mechanism of dislocation pile-up and relaxation. A consistent, general, continuum constitutive model was derived incorporating elastic, plastic, and QPE deformation. Using some aspects of two-yield-function approaches with unique modifications to incorporate QPE, the model was implemented in a finite element program with parameters determined for dual-phase steel and applied to draw-bend springback. Significant differences were found compared with standard simulations or ones incorporating modulus reduction. The proposed constitutive approach can be used with a variety of elastic and plastic models to treat the nonlinear unloading and reloading of metals consistently for general three-dimensional problems.  相似文献

Neck propagation
Propagation of a neck along the length of a tensile specimen as occurs in certain polymeric materials and in a few metals is studied. Two material models are considered: a nonlinear elastic solid, and an inelastic flow theory solid with both rate-dependent and rate-independent behaviors. For the elastic solid the states ahead and behind the neck transition can be obtained fairly simply from just the jump conditions governing continuity of mass, momentum and energy. For the inelastic solid a full three-dimensional analysis must be performed to obtain the same information, and an analysis of axisymmetric neck propagation is carried out.  相似文献

Continuous loading and unloading experiments are performed at different strain rates to characterize the large deformation behavior of polyurea under compressive loading. In addition, uniaxial compression tests are carried out with multistep strain history profiles. The analysis of the experimental data shows that the concept of equilibrium path may not be applied to polyurea. This finding implies that viscoelastic constitutive models of the Zener type are no suitable for the modeling of the rate dependent behavior of polyurea. A new constitutive model is developed based on a rheological model composed of two Maxwell elements. The soft rubbery response is represented by a Gent spring while nonlinear viscous evolution equations are proposed to describe the time-dependent material response. The eight material model parameters are identified for polyurea and used to predict the experimentally-measured stress-strain curves for various loading and unloading histories. The model provides a good prediction of the response under monotonic loading over wide range of strain rates, while it overestimates the stiffness during unloading. Furthermore, the model predictions of the material relaxation and viscous dissipation during a loading-unloading cycle agree well with the experiments.  相似文献

The effects of the inelastic deformation of the matrix on the overall hysteretic behavior of a unidirectional titanium–nickel shape-memory alloy (TiNi-SMA) fiber composite and on the local pseudoelastic response of the embedded SMA fibers are studied under the isothermal loading and unloading condition. The multiaxial phase transformation of the SMA fibers is predicted using the phenomenological constitutive equations which can describe the two-step deformation due to the rhombohedral and martensitic transformations, and the inelastic behavior of the matrix material using the standard nonlinear viscoplastic model. The average behavior of the SMA composite is evaluated with the micromechanical method of cells. It is observed that the inelastic deformation of the matrix due to prior tension results in a compressive stress in the matrix after unloading of the SMA composite and this residual stress impedes the complete recovery of the pseudoelastic strain of the SMA fibers. This explains that a closed hysteresis behavior of the SMA composite is no longer observed in contrast with the case that an elastic behavior of matrix is assumed. The predicted local stress–strain behavior indicates that the cyclic response of matrix is crucial to the design of the hysteretic performance of the SMA composite under the repeated loading conditions.  相似文献

In this paper we focus on the development of a beam theory for a small strain continuum model of thermoviscoelastic shape memory polymers (SMP). Rather than a history integral model that is common for viscoelastic materials, a thermodynamically based state evolution model developed by Ghosh and Srinivasa (2011a) is used as the basis for the beam model based on the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. An example of a three-point bend test is simulated using the beam theory model. The numerical solution is implemented by using an operator split technique that utilizes an elastic predictor and dissipative corrector. The key idea is that the elastic predictor is based on the solution to a beam theory boundary value problem while the dissipative corrector is entirely local (and hence can be parallelized) and is applied by considering the beam as a two or three dimensional body. This enables a very rapid solution of the problem yet maintaining fidelity of the distribution of inelastic strains across the cross-section. A displacement based convergence criterion is used in each time step. This algorithm is validated by using a three-point bending experiment for three different material cases: elastic, plastic and thermoplastic response. Time step convergence and mesh density convergence studies are carried out for the thermoviscoelastic FEM model. Finally, we implement and study this model for a SMP beam undergoing three-point bending strain recovery and stress recovery thermomechanical loading.  相似文献

The response of a polymer (polytetrafluoroethylene) to quasi-static and dynamic loading is determined and modeled. The polytetrafluoroethylene is extremely ductile and highly nonlinear in elastic as well as plastic behaviors including elastic unloading. Constitutive model developed earlier by Khan, Huang and Liang (KHL) is extended to include the responses of polymeric materials. The strain rate hardening, creep, and relaxation behaviors of polytetrafluoroethylene were determined through extensive experimental study. Based on the observation that both viscoelastic and viscoplastic deformation of polytetrafluoroethylene are time dependent and nonlinear, a phenomenalogical viscoelasto–plastic constitutive model is presented by a series connection of a viscoelastic deformation module (represented by three elements standard solid spring dashpot model), and a viscoplastic deformation module represented by KHL model. The KHL module is affected only when the stress exceeds the initial yield stress. The comparison between the predictions from the extended model and experimental data for uniaxial static and dynamic compression, creep and relaxation demonstrate that the proposed constitutive model is able to represent the observed time dependent mechanical behavior of polytetrafluoroethylene polytetrafluoroethylene qualitatively and quantitatively.  相似文献

A set of constitutive equations for large rate-dependent elastic-plastic-damage materials at elevated temperatures is presented to be able to analyze adiabatic high strain rate deformation processes for a wide range of stress triaxialities. The model is based on the concepts of continuum damage mechanics. Since the material macroscopic thermo-mechanical response under large strain and high strain rate deformation loading is governed by different physical mechanisms, a multi-dissipative approach is proposed. It incorporates thermo-mechanical coupling effects as well as internal dissipative mechanisms through rate-dependent constitutive relations with a set of internal variables. In addition, the effect of stress triaxiality on the onset and evolution of plastic flow, damage and failure is discussed.Furthermore, the algorithm for numerical integration of the coupled constitutive rate equations is presented. It relies on operator split methodology resulting in an inelastic predictor-elastic corrector technique. The explicit finite element program LS-DYNA augmented by an user-defined material subroutine is used to approximate boundary-value problems under dynamic loading conditions. Numerical simulations of dynamic experiments with different specimens are performed and good correlation of numerical results and published experimental data is achieved. Based on numerical studies modified specimens geometries are proposed to be able to detect complex damage and failure mechanisms in Hopkinson-Bar experiments.  相似文献

This study formulates a micromechanical model for predicting effective viscoelastic–viscoplastic responses of composites. The studied composites consist of solid spherical particle reinforcements dispersed in a homogeneous matrix. The particle constituent is assumed linear elastic, while the matrix exhibits combined viscoelastic–viscoplastic responses. The Schapery integral model is used for the 3D isotropic non-linear viscoelastic responses. Two viscoplastic models are considered: the Perzyna model, having a rate-independent yield surface and an overstress function, and the Valanis endochronic model based on an irreversible thermodynamics without a yield surface. The Valanis model is suitable for materials when viscoplastic responses occur at early loadings (small stress levels). A unit-cell model with four particle and polymer sub-cells is generated to obtain homogenized responses of the particle-reinforced composites. Available micromechanical models and experimental data in the literature are used to verify the proposed micromechanical model in predicting effective time-dependent and inelastic responses of composites. Field variables in the homogenized composites are compared to the ones in heterogeneous composites. The heterogeneous composites, having detailed particle geometries, are modeled using finite element (FE) method.  相似文献

The Oliver-Pharr method has been well established to measure Young’s modulus and hardness of materials without time-dependent behavior in nanoindentation. The method, however, is not appropriate for measuring the viscoelastic properties of materials with pronounced viscoelastic effects. One well-known phenomenon is the formation of unloading “nose” or negative stiffness during unloading that often occurs during slow loading-unloading in nanoindentation on a viscoelastic material. Most methods in literature have only considered the loading curve for analysis of viscoelastic nanoindentation data while the unloading portion is not analyzed adequately to determine the nonlinearly viscoelastic properties. In this paper, nonlinearly viscoelastic effects are considered and modeled using the nonlinear Burgers model. Nanoindentation was conducted on poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) using a spherical indenter tip. An inverse problem solving approach is used to allow the finite element simulation results to agree with the nanoindentation load–displacement curve during the entire loading and unloading stage. This approach has allowed the determination of the nonlinearly viscoelastic behavior of PMMA at submicron scale. In addition, the nanoindentation unloading “nose” has been captured by simulation, indicating that the negative stiffness in the viscoelastic material is the result of memory effect in time-dependent materials.  相似文献

A composite made of recycled carbon fibres in recycled polypropylene matrix is studied experimentally to describe the features of the elastic and time dependent nonlinear mechanical behaviour. The properties of the developed material have a large variability to be addressed and understood. It was found that the stress-strain curves in tension are rather nonlinear at low strain rate and the strength is sensitive to strain rate. The elastic properties’ reduction for this composite after loading to high strains is rather limited. More important is that even in the “elastic region” due to viscoelastic effects the slope of loading–unloading curve is not the same and that at higher stress large viscoplastic strains develop and creep rupture is typical. The time and stress dependence of viscoplastic strains was analysed and described theoretically. The viscoelastic response of the composite was analysed using creep compliance, which was found to be slightly nonlinear.  相似文献

In this work, the large deformation behaviour under monotonic loading and unloading of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) is studied. To analyze the nonlinear time-dependent response of the material, mechanical tests were conducted at room temperature under constant true strain rates and stress relaxation conditions. A physically-based inelastic model written under finite strain formulation is proposed to describe the mechanical behaviour of HDPE. In the model, the inelastic mechanisms involve two parallel elements: a visco-hyperelastic network resistance acting in parallel with a viscoelastic–viscoplastic intermolecular resistance where the amorphous and crystalline phases are explicitly taken into consideration. The semicrystalline polymer is considered as a two-phase composite. The influence of the crystallinity on the loading and unloading behaviour is investigated. Numerical results are compared to experimental data. It is shown that the model is able to accurately reproduce the experimental observations corresponding to monotonic loading, unloading and stress relaxation behaviours at different strain levels. Finally, the model capabilities to capture cyclic loading–unloading behaviour up to large strains are discussed. To demonstrate the improved modelling capabilities, simulations are also performed using the original model of Boyce et al. [Boyce, M.C., Socrate, S., Llana, P.G., 2000. Constitutive model for the finite deformation stress–strain behavior of poly(ethylene terephthalate) above the glass transition. Polymer 41, 2183–2201] modified by Ahzi et al. Analytic solutions are obtained for a sequence of one-dimensional quasistatic problems describing viscoelastic deformation processes in the material of a hollow ball and the plastic flow nucleation and evolution processes occurring in the ball as the pressure on the outer boundary increases. The unloading process under slow removal of the loading pressure is considered as well. The stress fields and the elastic and plastic strain fields in the spherical layer material, the law of motion of the elastoplastic boundary, and the residual stress level and distribution are computed. It is assumed that at the stage preceding the plastic flow the material obeys the viscoelastic Voigt model and the loading surface is determined by the von Mises plastic flow condition.  相似文献

This paper deals with equilibrium problems in nonlinear dissipative inelasticity, where inelastic effects are produced by the damage of the material. The inelastic constitutive law is obtained by modifying the classical constitutive law for a hyperelastic isotropic material through a damage function. To define this damage function, which allows to measure the effective stress and the dissipated energy, it is first used the Clausius-Duhem inequality, to have the (rate-independent) flow law of the damaged state and then it has been imposed a damage criterion based on an energy approach. After making the constitutive modeling, the boundary-value problem of the Rivlin’s cube, now composed of damaged material, is formulated. The purpose is to analyze a three-dimensional body that, during the deformation process, experiences a progressively increasing damage. Equilibrium branches of symmetric and asymmetric solutions, together to bifurcation points, are computed. Emphasis is placed in investigating how the damage can alter these equilibrium paths with respect to the virgin undamaged case. In particular, the stress reductions caused by damage can give rise to transitions from hardening type to the softening one of the constitutive behavior. These changes can affect the quality of the equilibrium solutions. Accordingly, the analysis is completed by assessing the stability of the solutions. For this aim, the energetic method is extended to damaged materials.  相似文献
