The present study deals with the surface gravity wave interaction with submerged horizontal flexible porous plate under the assumption of small amplitude water wave theory and structural response. The flexible porous plate is modeled using the thin plate theory and wave past porous structure is based on the generalized porous wavemaker theory. The wave characteristics due to the interaction of gravity waves with submerged flexible porous structure are studied by analyzing the complex dispersion relation using contour plots. Three different problems such as (i) wave scattering by a submerged flexible porous plate, (ii) wave trapping by submerged flexible porous plate placed at a finite distance from a rigid wall and (iii) wave reflection by a rigid wall in the presence of a submerged flexible porous plate are analyzed. The role of flexible porous plate in attenuating wave height and creating a tranquility zone is studied by analyzing the reflection, transmission and dissipation coefficients for various wave and structural parameters such as angle of incidence, depth of submergence, plate length, compression force and structural flexibility. In the case of wave trapping, the optimum distance between the porous plate and rigid wall for wave reflection is analyzed in different cases. In addition, effects of various physical parameters on free surface elevation, plate deflection, wave load on the plate and rigid wall are studied. The present approach can be extended to deal with acoustic wave interaction with flexible porous plates.

The response of a semi-infinite compressible fluid to a step-wise change in temperature of its boundary is investigated analytically and numerically. Numerical results of the boundary layer structure are compared with Clarke’s analytical solution for a gas with thermal conductivity proportional to temperature. To avoid unwanted numerical dissipation in the numerical analysis, the space-time conservation element and solution element (CESE) method has been adopted to solve the unsteady 1-D Navier-Stokes equations. Good agreement between analytical and numerical results has been found for the development of the thermal boundary layer on a long time scale. Weak shock waves and expansion waves induced by the thermal boundary layer due to its compressibility, are observed in the numerical simulation. Finally, the numerical method has been applied to the reflection of a non-linear expansion wave and to a shock wave from an isothermal wall, thereby illustrating the effect of the boundary layer on the external flow field.

The seaward slope of many breakwaters consists of thousands of interlocking units of rock or concrete comprising a massive granular system of large elements each weighing tens of tonnes. The dumped quarry materials in the core are protected by progressively coarser particulates. The outer armour layer of freely placed units is intended to both dissipate wave energy and remain structurally stable as strong flows are drawn in and out of the particulate core. Design guidance on the mass and shape of these units is based on empirical equations derived from scaled physical model tests. The main failure mode for armour layers exposed to severe storms is hydraulic instability where the armour units of concrete or rock are subjected to uplift and drag forces which can in turn lead to rocking, displacement and collisions sufficient to cause breakage of units. Recently invented armour unit designs making up such granular layered system owe much of their success to the desirable emergent properties of interlock and porosity and how these combine with individual unit structural strength and inertial mass. Fundamental understanding of the forces governing such wave-structure interaction remains poor. We use discrete element and combined finite-discrete element methods to model the granular solid skeleton of randomly packed units coupled to a CFD code which resolves the wave dynamics through an interface tracking technique. The CFD code exploits several methods including a compressive advection scheme, node movement, and general mesh optimization. We provide the engineering context and report progress towards the numerical modelling of instability in these massive granular systems.

High-Velocity Laminar and Turbulent Flow in Porous Media
We model high-velocity flow in porous media with the multiple scale homogenization technique and basic fluid mechanics. Momentum and mechanical energy theorems are derived. In idealized porous media inviscid irrotational flow in the pores and wall boundary layers give a pressure loss with a power of 3/2 in average velocity. This model has support from flow in simple model media. In complex media the flow separates from the solid surface. Pressure loss effects of flow separation, wall and free shear layers, pressure drag, flow tube velocity and developing flow are discussed by using phenomenological arguments. We propose that the square pressure loss in the laminar Forchheimer equation is caused by development of strong localized dissipation zones around flow separation, that is, in the viscous boundary layer in triple decks. For turbulent flow, the resulting pressure loss due to average dissipation is a power 2 term in velocity.

The present study deals with the trapping of oblique wave by porous barrier located near a rigid wall in the presence of a step type bottom bed. The solution of the physical problem is obtained using the eigenfunction expansion method and multi-mode approximation associated with modified mild-slope equation. Assuming that the porous structure is made of materials having fine pores, the mathematical problem is handled for solution by matching the velocity and pressure at interface boundaries. Various numerical results are computed and analyzed to understand the role of bed profiles, structural porosity, depth ratio, oblique angle of incidence, distance between barrier and step edge and, the distance between the porous barrier and rigid wall in optimizing wave reflection and load on the structure/rigid-wall. A comparison of results on wave trapping by porous barriers over flat and undulated bed reveals that for the same distance between the porous barrier and rigid wall, more number of times optimum reflection occurs in case of undulated bed. The present study is likely to be of immense importance in the design of coastal structures for protecting coastal infrastructures.

The reflection and transmission characteristics of an incident plane P1 wave from the interface of a fluid-saturated single porous solid and a fluid-saturated double porosity solid are investigated. The fluid-saturated porous solid is modeled with the classic Biot’s theory and the double porosity medium is described by an extended Biot’s theory. In a double-porosity model with dual-permeability there exist three compressional waves and a shear wave. The effects of the incident angle and frequency on amplitude ratios of the reflected and transmitted waves to the incident wave are discussed. Two boundary conditions are discussed in detail: (a) Open-pore boundary and (b) Sealed-pore boundary. Numerical results reveal that the characteristics of the reflection and transmission coefficients to the incident angle and the frequency are quite different for the two cases of boundary conditions. Properties of the bulk waves existing in the fluid-saturated porous solid and the double porosity medium are also studied.

The problem of transient free convection in domains partly filled with porous substrates is investigated analytically using Laplace transformation technique. Four configurations are considered which are subject to an isothermal heating boundary condition. The Brinkman-extended Darcy model is adopted to describe the hydrodynamics behavior of the porous domain.

The shock-wave structure in a porous elastoplastic material is studied. In a certain range of parameters, the existence of a four-wave structure of a compression shock wave is possible. Regimes in which a reflected shock wave does not appear at all have been found in the problem of shock-wave reflection from a rigid wall. In this case, the entire energy of the incident shock wave transforms to thermal energy due to dissipation induced by the viscous collapse of the pores. The interaction between an air shock wave and a rigid wall covered by a porous screen is investigated numerically and experimentally. A mathematical two velocity with two stress tensors model is used for studying the wave processes in saturated porous media. The process of reflection of a step-type wave from a rigid wall covered with a porous layer is considered, the effect of the porous medium and wave parameters on the reflection is analyzed, and the numerical results are compared with the experimental data.Received: 30 July 2002, Accepted: 24 December 2002, Published online: 27 May 2003  相似文献

The effects of viscous dissipation on unsteady free convection from an isothermal vertical flat plate in a fluid saturated porous medium are examined numerically. The Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer model is employed to describe the flow field. A new model of viscous dissipation is used for the Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer model of porous media. The simultaneous development of the momentum and thermal boundary layers are obtained by using a finite difference method. Boundary layer and Boussinesq approximation have been incorporated. Numerical calculations are carried out for various parameters entering into the problem. Velocity and temperature profiles as well as local friction factor and local Nusselt number are shown graphically. It is found that as time approaches infinity, the values of friction factor and heat transfer coefficient approach steady state.

In this study examined is the wave interaction with a new modified perforated breakwater, consisting of a perforated front wall, a solid back wall and a wave absorbing chamber between them with a two-layer rock-filled core. The fluid domain is divided into three sub-domains according to the components of the breakwater. Then by means of the matched eigenfunction expansion method, an analytical solution is obtained to assess the hydrodynamic performance of the new structure. An approach based on a step approach method is introduced to solve the complex dispersion equations for water wave motions within two-layer porous media. Numerical results of the present model are compared with previous limiting cases. The effects of rock fill on the reflection coefficient and the horizontal wave force are discussed. Based on the theory of porous media,a general Gurtin variational principle for theinitial boundary value problem of dynamical response of fluid-saturated elastic porous media isdeveloped by assuming infinitesimal deformation and incompressible constituents of the solid andfluid phase. The finite element formulation based on this variational principle is also derived.Asthe functional of the variational principle is a spatial integral of the convolution formulation, thegeneral finite element discretization in space results in symmetrical differential-integral equationsin the time domain. In some situations, the differential-integral equations can be reduced to sym-metrical differential equations and,as a numerical example,it is employed to analyze the reflectionof one-dimensional longitudinal wave in a fluid-saturated porous solid. The numerical results canprovide further understanding of the wave propagation in porous media.

In the present work, analytical solutions are developed to simulate the transient hydrodynamics for a non-Darcian fluid flow in circular channels partially filled with a porous material. The current investigation considers two different cases: in the first case, a porous substrate shell is inserted adjacent to the channel wall, while in the second case, a cylindrical element of porous material is inserted at the channel center.
