Some existence theorems of common and coincidence solutions for a class of moregeneral systems of functional equations arising in dynamic programming are shown.Theresults presented in this paper not only contain the corresponding results of[6,7]as specialcases,but also give an existence theorem of solutions for a class of functional equationssuggested by Wang recently.

Single-Pulse Solutions for Oscillatory Coupling Functions in Neural Networks

We study the existence and linear stability of stationary pulse solutions of an integro-differential equation modeling the coarse-grained averaged activity of a single layer of interconnected neurons. The neuronal connections considered feature lateral oscillations with an exponential rate of decay and variable period. We identify regions in the parameter space where solutions exhibit areas of excitation with single- and dimpled-pulses. When the gain function reduces to the Heaviside function, we establish existence of single-pulse solutions analytically. For a more general gain function, we include numerical support of the existence of pulse-like solutions. We then study the linear stability behavior of these solutions.

Global existence and uniqueness of solutions for the equations of third grade fluids

We consider the equations governing the motion of third grade fluids in . We show global existence of solutions without any smallness assumption, by assuming only that the initial velocity belongs to the Sobolev space H². The uniqueness of such solutions is also proven in dimension two.     

Pseudo Almost Periodic Solutions to a Class of Semilinear Differential Equations

This paper is concerned with the existence and uniqueness of pseudo almost periodic solutions to a class of semilinear differential equations involving the algebraic sum of two (possibly noncommuting) densely defined closed linear operators acting on a Hilbert space. Travelling wave solutions for a second order wave equation of KdV type

The theory of planar dynamical systems is used to study the dynamical behaviours of travelling wave solutions of a nonlinear wave equations of KdV type.In different regions of the parametric space,sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of solitary wave solutions,periodic wave solutions,kink and anti-kink wave solutions are given.All possible exact explicit parametric representations are obtained for these waves.

Attractor for a Degenerate Nonlinear Diffusion Problem with Nonlinear Boundary Condition

Double-diffusive natural convection in a porous enclosure partially heated from below and differentially salted

This paper reports numerical results of two-dimensional double-diffusive natural convection in a square porous cavity partially heated from below while its upper surface is cooled at a constant temperature. The vertical walls of the porous matrix are subjected to a horizontal concentration gradient. The parameters governing the problem are the thermal Rayleigh number (Ra=100 and 200), the Lewis number (Le=0.1, 1 and 10), the buoyancy ratio (−10N10) and the relative position of the heating element with respect to the vertical centerline of the cavity (δ=0 and 0.5). The effect of the governing parameters on fluid characteristics is analyzed. The multiplicity of solutions is explored and the existence of asymmetric bicellular flow is proved when the heated element is shifted towards a vertical boundary (δ=0.5). The solutal buoyancy forces induced by horizontal concentration gradient lead to the elimination of the multiplicity of solutions obtained in pure thermal convection when N reaches some threshold value which depends on Le and Ra.

Global existence of weak solutions to a prey-predator model with strong cross-diffusion

Using finite differences and entropy inequalities, the global existence of weak solutions to a multidimensional parabolic strongly coupled prey-predator model is obtained. The nonnegativity of the solutions is also shown.     

Dynamical behavior of traveling wave solutions of ion acoustic plasma equations

By using the theory of planar dynamical systems to the ion acoustic plasma equations, we obtain the existence of the solutions of the smooth and non-smooth solitary waves and the uncountably infinite smooth and non-smooth periodic waves. Under the given parametric conditions, we present the sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of the above solutions.     

Theoretical considerations on shock reflections and their implications on the evaluation of air intake performance

Many theoretical studies have shown the existence of a hysteresis effect in the solution of oblique shock reflections. In fact, a wide domain of free-stream Mach number and shock angle values exists where regular reflection and Mach reflection are both possible solutions for the same flow conditions. Part of this domain overlaps the typical operating conditions of supersonic air intakes, and therefore it is of practical interest to obtain a deeper understanding of the theoretical problem. Indeed, although both solutions are theoretically possible, they yield very different flowfields and consequently large discrepancies in the evaluation of the air intake performance. Numerical solutions for steady configurations have been carried out and compared with the flow evolution obtained for time-dependent cases. The results have confirmed numerically the existence of the multiple solution domain where hysteresis takes place in time-dependent simulations. The analysis of the physical and numerical problems encountered has provided indications for a correct simulation in practical applications. Received 10 August 1999 / Accepted 6 October 2000
