The cracked semi-circular specimen subjected to three-point bending has been recognized as an appropriate test specimen for conducting mode I, mode II and mixed mode I/II fracture tests in brittle materials. The manufacturing and pre-cracking of the specimen are simple. No complicated loading fixture is also required for a fracture test. However, almost all of the theoretical criteria available for mixed mode brittle fracture fail to predict the experimentally determined mode II fracture toughness obtained from the semi-circular bend (SCB) specimen. In this paper, a modified maximum tangential stress criterion is used for calculating mode II fracture toughness KIIc in terms of mode I fracture toughness KIc. The modified criterion is used for predicting the reported values of mode II fracture toughness for two brittle materials: a rock material (Johnstone) and a brittle polymer (PMMA). It is shown that the modified criterion provides very good predictions for experimental results.  相似文献

In this work, we propose a new criterion for mixed mode I-II crack initiation angles based on the characteristics of the plastic core region surrounding the crack tip. The shape and size of the plastic core region are thoroughly analyzed under different loading conditions and a new formulation for the non-dimensional variable radius of the core region is presented for mixed mode (KIKII) fracture. The proposed criterion states that the crack extends in the direction of the local or global minimum of the plastic core region boundary depending on the resultant stress state at the crack tip. The results show a well-defined correlation between the plastic core region characteristics and crack extension angles predicted by other criteria. The proposed criterion is formulated for various loading conditions and is compared with other available criteria against the limited available experimental data. It is shown that the proposed criterion provides a better agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

A detailed analytical and experimental investigation is presented to understand the dynamic fracture behavior of functionally graded materials (FGMs) under mode I and mixed mode loading conditions. Crack-tip stress, strain and displacement fields for a mixed mode crack propagating at an angle from the direction of property gradation were obtained through an asymptotic analysis coupled with a displacement potential approach. This was followed by a comprehensive series of experiments to gain further insight into the behavior of propagating cracks in FGMs. Dynamic photoelasticity coupled with high-speed photography was used to obtain crack tip velocities and dynamic stress fields around the propagating cracks. Birefringent coatings were used to conduct the photoelastic study due to the opaqueness of the FGMs. Dynamic fracture experiments were performed using different specimen geometries to develop a dynamic constitutive fracture relationship between the mode I dynamic stress intensity factor (K ID ) and crack-tip velocity ( ) for FGMs with the crack moving in the direction of increasing fracture toughness. A similar -K ID relation was also obtained for matrix material (polyester) for comparison purposes. The results obtained show that crack propagation velocities in FGMs were about 80% higher than the polyester matrix. Crack arrest toughness was found to be about 10% lower than the value of local fracture toughness in FGMs.  相似文献

Brittle fracture in ceramics sometimes occurs under combined opening-sliding (or mixed mode I/II) crack deformation. In this paper, a generalized maximum tangential stress criterion is employed for predicting the fracture initiation angle under mixed mode I/II loading in some brittle ceramics including alumina, zirconia, soda lime glass and three silicon based ceramics. The experimental results reported for the fracture angles in these ceramics have been obtained from fracture tests on the centrally cracked circular disc (often called the Brazilian disc). Very good agreement is shown to exist between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions. According to the fracture model, the mixed mode fracture angle is strongly dependent on the elastic T-stress in the tested ceramics. The negative T-stress that exists in the Brazilian disc specimen can be the main influencing parameter for decreasing the fracture initiation angle in the investigated ceramics.  相似文献

In order to study the behavior of a crack in a linear-elastic material in plane mixed mode (modes I+II), a specimen's shape and loading have been specially adapted. The specimens are first precracked in mode I and then subjected to monotonic loading until instability is reached by an original device which makes it possible to control the nature of the mixed mode applied and which is adjustable from pure mode I to pure mode II. After the specimens are fractured, the lengths of the initial cracks and the kinking angles were measured in the plane-strain area. Then the stress-intensity factorsK I andK II at the moment when crack instability appeared were calculated. This made it possible to apply two criteria: maximum principal stress and maximum stressintensity factorK 1 * at the onset of kinking. From comparing the calculated values with the experimental values we may note that there is good agreement with respect to the crackkinking directions. However, for the limit load values considerable divergences have been recorded which are analyzed.  相似文献

The effect of notch geometry on the propagation of fatigue cracks emanating from sharp V-shaped notches is investigated by means of an experimental campaign performed on Al-7075-T651 specimens carrying notches with opening angles of 45°, 90°, and 135°. The samples were tested using a servohydraulic machine under different loading directions and at several loading levels. The crack deflection induced by the variation in loading direction was determined my measuring the kinking angle and by studying the crack propagation plane through fractographic analysis. A linear elastic fracture mechanics approach was adopted for the analysis of experimental results. Stress intensity factors were calculated using an appropriate weight function set up for studying inclined edge cracks emanating from sharp V-notches. The influence of K II on the crack propagation was discussed on the basis of theoretical and semi empirical models.  相似文献

Finite element method (FEM) has been used to analyze the stress and strain fields and the stress tri-axial levels around the tip of the crack under mode- II loading. The results show that: under mode- II loading, the direction of the maximum tensile stress and that of the maximum tri-axial levels (R o ) exist at an angle of –75. 3° from the original crack plane; the maximum shear stress andR o = 0 exist along the original crack plane.Mode- II loading experiment using BHW-35 steel at different temperatures show that there are two kinds of fracture mode, opening mode (or tensile mode) and sliding mode (or shear mode). A decrease in temperature causes the fracture mode to change from shear mode to tensile mode. For BHW-35 steel, this critical temperature is about –90 C. Actually, under any kind of loading mode (mode I . mode II , mode III or mixed mode), there always exist several kinds of potenital fracture modes (for example, opening mode, sliding mode, tearing mode or mixed mode). The effect of temperature under mode- II loading is actually related to the change of the elastic-plastic properties of the material.  相似文献

A biaxially loaded, single edge notched (SEN) fracture specimen, with mixed modes I and II loading, was used to study the crack arrest capability of a bonded and riveted tear strap without and with simulated multiple site damage (MSD). MSD was modeled by a 50-percent groove without which the running crack would inevitably kink due to KII loading. A total of thirty-one 2024-T3 aluminum specimens with various crack and MSD configurations were tested. The fracture parameters associated with straight and curved crack paths were determined by using the experimenta results to drive a dynamic finite element model of the specimen in its generation mode. The crack kinking and extension criteria were verified by the excellent agreement between the prediction based on these fracture parameters and the measured crack kinking angles. Comparison between the test results generated by the biaxial stress specimens and by those generated by small- and full-scale pressurized fuselage rupture experiments showed that this specimen can be used to prescreen the effectiveness of tear straps and crack arrestors in an airplane fuselage.  相似文献

For crack growth along an interface between dissimilar materials the effect of combined modes I, II and III at the crack-tip is investigated. First, in order to highlight situations where crack growth is affected by a mode III contribution, examples of material configurations are discussed where mode III has an effect. Subsequently, the focus is on crack growth along an interface between an elastic-plastic solid and an elastic substrate. The analyses are carried out for conditions of small-scale yielding, with the fracture process at the interface represented by a cohesive zone model. Due to the mismatch of elastic properties across the interface the corresponding elastic solution has an oscillating stress singularity, and this solution is applied as boundary conditions on the outer edge of the region analyzed. For several combinations of modes I, II and III crack growth resistance curves are calculated numerically in order to determine the steady-state fracture toughness. For given values of KI and KII the minimum fracture toughness corresponds to KIII=0 in most of the range analyzed, but there is a range where the minimum occurs for a nonzero value of KIII.  相似文献

The mixed mode, near-field state of stresses sourrounding a crack propagating at constant velocity is used to derive a relation between the dynamic stress-intensity factorsK I,K II, the remote stress component σ ox and the dynamic isochromatics. This relation, together with an over-deterministic least-square method, form the basis of a datareduction procedure for extracting dynamic,K I,K II and σ ox from the recorded dynamic photoelastic pattern surrounding a running crack. The overdeterministic least-square method is also used to fit static isochromatics to the numerically generated dynamic isochromatics. The resultant staticK I,K II and σ ox are compared with the corresponding dynamic values and estimats of errors involved in using static analysis to process dynamic isochromatic data are obtained. The data-reduction procedure is then used to evaluate the branching stress-intensity factor associated with crack branching and the mixed-mode stress-intensity factors associated with crack curving.  相似文献

The fracture behavior of partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) and silicon-nitride ceramics (Si3N4) is investigated under dynamic loading at elevated temperatures up to 1200°C using the caustic method combined with an ultra high-speed camera. The values of the dynamic fracture toughnessK Id and the crack-propagation fracture toughnessK ID are obtained, and it is shown that a dynamic effect on these values is observed in PSZ but not in Si3N4. The dynamic crack arrest toughnessK Ia is found to exist for PSZ.  相似文献

The plane-strain crack subjected to mode I cyclic loading under small scale yielding was analysed. The influence of the load range, load ratio and overload on the near-tip deformation-, stress- and strain-fields was studied. Although the near-tip zones of appreciable cyclic plastic flow for all loading regimes matched closely one another, when scaled with (ΔK/σY)2, the activities of plastic flow within them manifested dependence on Kmax and Kmin, as well as on overload. Cyclic trajectories of the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) converged to stable self-similar loops of the sizes proportional to ΔK2 and positions in CTOD-K plane dependent on the maximum K along the whole loading route, including an overload. Computed near-tip deformation evidenced plastic crack advance, this way visualising of the Laird–Smith concept of fatigue cracking. This crack growth by blunting-resharpening accelerated with rising ΔK and was halted by an overload. Crack closure upon unloading had no place. The affinities were revealed between computed near-tip stress–strain variables and the experimental trends of the fatigue crack growth rate, such as its dependence on Kmax and Kmin (or ΔK and Kmax), and retardation by overload. Thus, the effects of loading parameters on fatigue cracking, hitherto associated with crack closure, are attributable to the stress–strain fields in front of it as the direct drives of the key fatigue constituents – damage accumulation and bond breaking.  相似文献

Shear band formation and fracture are characterized during mode II loading of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass. The measured mode II fracture toughness, KIIc=75±4 MPa√m, exceeds the reported mode I fracture toughness by ∼4 times, suggesting that normal or mean stresses play a significant role in the deformation process at the crack tip. This effect is explained in light of a mean stress modified free volume model for shear localization in metallic glasses. Thermal imaging of deformation at the mode II crack tip further reveals that shear bands initiate, arrest, and reactivate along the same path, indicating that flow in the shear band leads to permanent changes in the glass structure that retain a memory of the shear band path. The measured temperature increase within the shear band is a fraction of a degree. However, heat dissipation models indicate that the temperature could have exceeded the glass transition temperature for less than 1 ms immediately after the shear band formed. It is shown that this time scale is sufficient for mechanical relaxation slightly above the glass transition temperature.

In this work, the effect of constraint on hole growth near a notch tip in a ductile material under mode I and mixed mode loading (involving modes I and II) is investigated. To this end, a 2-D plane strain, modified boundary layer formulation is employed in which the mixed mode elastic KT field is prescribed as remote boundary conditions. A finite element procedure that accounts for finite deformations and rotations is used along with an appropriate version of J2 flow theory of plasticity with small elastic strains. Several analyses are carried out corresponding to different values of T-stress and remote elastic mode-mixity. The interaction between the notch and hole is studied by examining the distribution of hydrostatic stress and equivalent plastic strain in the ligament between the notch tip and the hole, as well as the growth of the hole. The implications of the above results on ductile fracture initiation due to micro-void coalescence are discussed.  相似文献

Experimental results suggest that the interfacial fracture resistance is minimal for approximate near tip Mode I accompanied by positive and negative near tip Mode II. Finite-strain FE analysis is made for an elastic–plastic medium bonded to an ideally elastic medium with an interface crack. Small-scale plasticity conditions are invoked and examined in relation to the elastic–plastic stress distribution along the bond line. Plasticity engenders a tendency to turn near tip biaxiality towards pure Mode I regardless of the mixed-mode loading. High levels of hydrostatic stress are attained. For different mode mixities of the applied load, the dependence of the elastic–plastic normal bond stress on load level is examined. It is found that under positive Mode II loading, the normal bond stress σyy tends to saturate as the load level rises. This does not occur for Mode I and negative Mode II loading. In addition, deformation patterns inside the plastic zone are examined for mixed-mode situations. A displacement criterion based on the normal bond crack opening suggests a dependence of the critical load level on the extent of mixed mode. Under positive mode II fracture, traces of the ductile material are found at the top of the elastic substrate. Some of these conclusions appear to be consistent with the fracture patterns observed for LD-polyethylene/glass interfacial mixed-mode fracture.  相似文献

Under mixed mode loading, the crack tip blunts and undergoes displacements in two directions, the normal and shear component corresponding to Mode I and Mode II loading, respectively. These local displacements are determined by the duplicated film method and used to analyze the behavior of mixed mode fracture in aluminum alloy LY12. The mixed mode resultant crack opening displacement (COD) at fracture initiation tends to increase more rapidly with increase of the Mode II shear component. The fracture initiation value of COD for pure Mode II loading is six (6) times greater than that for Mode 1 loading. The same applies to the maximum effective plastic strain crack growth near the crack front. Observed are two typical morphologies, the equal-axes dimples and the parabolic dimples with evidence of slippage as dominated, respectively, by Mode I and Mode II loading.  相似文献

The effect of constraint on brittle fracture of solids under predominantly elastic deformation and mode I loading conditions is studied. Using different cracked specimen geometry, the variation of constraint is achieved in this work. Fracture tests of polymethyl methacrylate were performed using single edge notch, compact tension and double cantilever beam specimens to cover a bread range of constraint. The test data demonstrate that the apparent fracture toughness of the material varies with the specimen geometry or the constraint level. Theory is developed using the critical stress (strain) as the fracture criterion to show that this variation can be interpreted using the critical stress intensity factorK Cand a second parameterT orA 3,whereT andA 3are the amplitudes of the second and the third term in the Williams series solution, respectively. The implication of this constraint effect to the ASTM fracture toughness value, crack tip opening displacement fracture criterion and energy release rateG Cis discussed. Using the same critical stress (strain) as the fracture criterion, the theory further predicts crack curving or instability under mode I loading conditions. Experimental data are presented and compared with the theory.  相似文献

Static and dynamic photoelastic experiments were conducted to evaluate the energy lost due to damping in a thick-walled-ring specimen during a run-arrest fracture event. Short starter cracks were machined into a series of ring specimens fabricated from Homalite 100 and the specimens were loaded by a specially designed mechanical deformeter to giveK Q/KImranging from 1.76 to 2.15. The crack was initiated and high-speed photographs of the isochromatic-fringe loops at the tip of the running crack were recorded. The data were analyzed to obtain the instantaneous stress-intensity factorK(t), the normalized crack positiona/w, and the crack velocity \(\dot a\) . A comparison ofK, as a function of positiona/w, was made between static and dynamic crack growth. Average values ofK were determined from these curves and estimates of initial strain energy and energy lost in forming the fracture surface were made. An energy balance was used to evaluate the energy loss due to damping in all the experiments. The energy loss during the run-arrest event was approximately 50 percent of initial strain energy.  相似文献
