Surface growth models may give rise to instabilities with mound formation whose typical linear size L increases with time (coarsening process). In one dimensional systems coarsening is generally driven by an attractive interaction between domain walls or kinks. This picture applies to growth models for which the largest surface slope remains constant in time (corresponding to model B of dynamics): coarsening is known to be logarithmic in the absence of noise ( L(t) ∼ ln t) and to follow a power law ( L(t) ∼t 1/3) when noise is present. If the surface slope increases indefinitely, the deterministic equation looks like a modified Cahn-Hilliard equation: here we study the late stages of coarsening through a linear stability analysis of the stationary periodic configurations and through a direct numerical integration. Analytical and numerical results agree with regard to the conclusion that steepening of mounds makes deterministic coarsening faster : if α is the exponent describing the steepening of the maximal slope M of mounds ( M αL) we find that L(t) ∼t n: n is equal to for 1≤α≤2 and it decreases from to for α≥2, according to n = α/(5α - 2). On the other side, the numerical solution of the corresponding stochastic equation clearly shows that in the presence of shot noise steepening of mounds makes coarsening slower than in model B: L(t) ∼t 1/4, irrespectively of α. Finally, the presence of a symmetry breaking term is shown not to modify the coarsening law of model α = 1, both in the absence and in the presence of noise. We consider biological evolution as described within the Bak and Sneppen 1993 model. We exhibit, at the self-organized critical state, a power-law sensitivity to the initial conditions, calculate the associated exponent, and relate it to the recently introduced nonextensive thermostatistics. The scenario which here emerges without tuning strongly reminds of that of the tuned onset of chaos in say logistic-like one-dimensional maps. We also calculate the dynamical exponent z. We define a block persistence probability p l (t) as the probability that the order parameter integrated on a block of linear size l has never changed sign since the initial time in a phase-ordering process at finite temperature T<T c . We argue that in the scaling limit of large blocks, where z is the growth exponent (), is the global (magnetization) persistence exponent and f(x) decays with the local (single spin) exponent for large x. This scaling is demonstrated at zero temperature for the diffusion equation and the large-n model, and generically it can be used to determine easily from simulations of coarsening models. We also argue that and the scaling function do not depend on temperature, leading to a definition of at finite temperature, whereas the local persistence probability decays exponentially due to thermal fluctuations. These ideas are applied to the study of persistence for conserved models. We illustrate our discussions by extensive numerical results. We also comment on the relation between this method and an alternative definition of at finite temperature recently introduced by Derrida [Phys. Rev. E 55, 3705 (1997)]. We show how Fermi liquid theory results can be systematically recovered using a renormalization group (RG) approach. Considering a two-dimensional system with a circular Fermi surface, we derive RG equations at one-loop order for the two-particle vertex function in the limit of small momentum () and energy () transfer and obtain the equation which determines the collective modes of a Fermi liquid. The density-density response function is also calculated. The Landau function (or, equivalently, the Landau parameters F l s and F l a ) is determined by the fixed point value of the -limit of the two-particle vertex function (). We show how the results obtained at one-loop order can be extended to all orders in a loop expansion. Calculating the quasi-particle life-time and renormalization factor at two-loop order, we reproduce the results obtained from two-dimensional bosonization or Ward Identities. We discuss the zero-temperature limit of the RG equations and the difference between the Field Theory and the Kadanoff-Wilson formulations of the RG. The relationship between a microscopic parameter p, that is related to the probability of choosing a mechanism of deposition, and the stochastic equation for the interface's evolution is studied for two different models. It is found that in one model, that is similar to ballistic deposition, the corresponding stochastic equation can be represented by a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation where both λ and ν depend on p in the following way: ν(p) = νp and λ(p) = λp 3/2. Furthermore, in the other studied model, which is similar to random deposition with relaxation, the stochastic equation can be represented by an Edwards-Wilkinson (EW) equation where ν depends on p according to ν(p) = νp 2. It is expected that these results will help to find a framework for the development of stochastic equations starting from microscopic details of growth models. It is shown that the theory is renormalizable to all orders in perturbation theory and that the dynamical scaling exponent z is given by . We explore the way free particles produced by dissociating “particle-hole pairs” on a surface-melted cluster can be transferred to a second, nearby surface-melted cluster. This mass transport is based on an inter-cluster direct transfer mechanism of the particles. We found that in this particular case one cluster may grow at the expense of another, obeying a temporal power law with the exponent 1/2 for the average radius (Rt 1/2). The change from the expected universal power law (Rt 1/3) is a consequence of the proximity relation between these two clusters which lead to enhance the effective transport rates. Long-range correlation properties of stochastic time series y(i) have been investigated by introducing the function σ2 MA = [y(i) - (i)]2, where (i) is the moving average of y(i), defined as 1/n y(i - k), n the moving average window and Nmax is the dimension of the stochastic series. It is shown that, using an appropriate computational procedure, the function σ MA varies as nH where H is the Hurst exponent of the series. A comparison of the power-law exponents obtained using respectively the function σ MA and the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis has been also carried out. Interesting features denoting the existence of a relationship between the scaling properties of the noisy process and the moving average filtering technique have been evidenced. Catenoid-shaped smectic films are spanned between two coaxial circular frames separated by a distance H. It is shown that there exists a critical height H* such that below it two shapes of the catenoid are possible. The stability of these two shapes is analysed in terms of their vibrations. The spectrum of eigenfrequencies is calculated as a function of the catenoid height. It is shown that the frequency of the fundamental mode is real for the stable shape and imaginary for the other shape. Experimental study of vibrational eigenmodes performed on stable SCE4 films confirms this theoretical prediction. We report an investigation of magnetic resonance by ESR in oxygen-doped La2NiO emphasizing extensively for the first time the role of oxygen stoichiometry. The work is performed at room temperature and on powders with . At low field an hysteresis is detected between increasing and decreasing fields, it depends upon . The resonance lines have characteristic features of ferromagnetic resonance. The intensity () is used as an experimental parameter for investigating the effect of . It allows to built a diagram closely connected to the phase diagram . It suggests a ferromagnetic coupling depending upon . When the (average) structure is tetragonal the low intensity is due to a magnetic polaron of low resistivity. In ranges where a phase separation is detected, the ferromagnetic coupling has a structural origin (DM or local anisotropy) with apparently a strong influence on the electrical resistivity. We study the scattering intensity of dilute and semi-dilute solutions of star polymers. The star conformation is described by a model introduced by Daoud and Cotton. In this model, a single star is regarded as a spherical region of a semi-dilute polymer solution with a local, position dependent screening length. For high enough concentrations, the outer sections of the arms overlap and build a semi-dilute solution (a sea of blobs) where the inner parts of the actual stars are embedded. The scattering function is evaluated following a method introduced by Auvray and de Gennes. In the dilute regime there are three regions in the scattering function: the Guinier region (low wave vectors, ) from where the radius of the star can be extracted; the intermediate region () that carries the signature of the form factor of a star with f arms: ; and a high wavevector zone () where the local swollen structure of the polymers gives rise to the usual q -5/3 decay. In the semi-dilute regime the different stars interact strongly, and the scattered intensity acquires two new features: a liquid peak that develops at a reciprocal position corresponding to the star-star distances; and a new large wavevector contribution of the form q -5/3 originating from the sea of blobs. According to the Harris-Luck criterion the relevance of a fluctuating interaction at the critical point is connected to the value of the fluctuation exponent . Here we consider different types of relevant fluctuations in the quantum Ising chain and investigate the universality class of random as well as deterministic-aperiodic models. At the critical point the random and aperiodic systems behave similarly, due to the same type of extreme broad distribution of the energy scales at low energies. The critical exponents of some averaged quantities are found to be a universal function of , but some others do depend on other parameters of the distribution of the couplings. In the off-critical region there is an important difference between the two systems: there are no Griffiths singularities in aperiodic models. We have studied the nucleation of bubbles in pure superfluid helium-4 at temperatures down to 65 mK. We have found that the nucleation is a stochastic process, and that at temperatures below 600 mK the nucleation rate is independent of temperature. These results are consistent with the assumption that the nucleation takes place via quantum tunneling. We provide an analytic solution for the mean-field equations and for the relevant physical quantities at the Gaussian level, in terms of the complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds, for the crossover problem from BCS superconductivity to Bose-Einstein condensation of a three-dimensional system of free fermions interacting via an attractive contact potential at zero temperature. This analytic solution enables us to follow the evolution between the two limits in a particularly simple and transparent way, as well as to verify the absence of singularities during the evolution. The XPS MnL-spectra of Co2MnSn, a nearly half-metallic ferromagnet (HMF) and Pd2MnSn were investigated. The most drastical feature of the spectra observed is the well-defined magnetic splitting of the Mn 2p 3/2 , 2p 1/2 lines. This gives direct evidence of the existence of well-defined local magnetic moments in Heusler alloys in comparison with other itinerant-electron ferromagnets. The calculations of Mn2p XPS spectra of these materials were carried out using a fully relativistic generalization of the one-step model of photoemission and show excellent agreement with experiment. The intermetallic compound Nd-Fe-Ti-N has been successfully synthesized by a mechanical alloying process. The structure and magnetic properties of the sample have been studied using X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. It is found that alloy exhibits a nanocrystalline ThMn12-type tetragonal structure with lattice parameters of a=0.8723 nm and c=0.4896 nm. The saturation magnetization MS and effective magnetic anisotropy Keff of the compound have been determined by investigating magnetization processes. The calculated results based on the law of approach to magnetic saturation have been successfully used to determine the constant Keff. The difference between observed and calculated values in magnetization is lower than 3%. Of all terms in the law of approach to saturation, it is the 1/H 2 term, which is attributed more to non-compensated anisotropy energy, that has the prevailing effect for the compound. The emission of photons in the visible wavelength range from mass-selected Ag+ n, Cu+ n, Pt+ n and Pd+ n () clusters is observed. Photons are detected 10-4 s after the cluster generation in a sputter source. The emission intensities display distinct variations with cluster size and material. The observations are interpreted in terms of the decay of metastable states which are excited during the high-energy sputtering process used for the generation of these clusters. A nematic liquid crystal confined between two identical flat solid substrates, with an alternating stripe pattern of planar and homeotropic anchoring, is studied in the framework of the Frank-Oseen theory. By means of numerical minimization of the free energy functional we study the effect of the sample thickness D on the location of the phase transition between a uniform alignment, either planar or homeotropic, and a distorted nematic texture. The solvation force f due to distortions of the nematic director is also studied. It is found that f is always attractive, and for D small compared to the periodicity of the surface structure it exhibits two distinct asymptotic behaviors: f ∼ - D -1/2 or f ∼ - D -1, depending on the relation between D and the extrapolation lengths. The typical island distance in submonolayer epitaxial growth depends on the growth conditions via an exponent . This exponent is known to depend on the substrate dimensionality, the dimension of the islands, and the size i* of the critical nucleus for island formation. In this paper we study the dependence of on i* in one-dimensional epitaxial growth. We derive that for and confirm this result by computer simulations.
