The combustion characteristics for the turbulent diffusion flames using the unsteady flamelet concept have been numerically investigated. The Favre-averaged Navier–Stokes equations are solved by a finite volume method of SIMPLE type that incorporates the laminar flamelet concept with a modified k ? ε turbulence model. The NO formation is estimated by solving the Eulerian particle transport equations in a postprocessing mode. Two test problems are considered: CH4/H2/N2 jet flame and CH4/H2 stabilised bluff body flame. The temperature and species profiles are well captured by the flamelet model. Two different chemical mechanisms (GRI 2.11 and 3.0) give nearly identical results for temperature and species except NO. The GRI 3.0 gives significantly higher NO levels compared to the GRI 2.11. This is mainly attributed to the difference in NO formation by the prompt mechanism. The NO formation is sensitive to the number of flamelet particles. The NO levels for two test flames do not change when the flamelet particle number exceeds six.  相似文献

This paper presents results obtained from the application of a first-order conditional moment closure approach to the modelling of two methane flames of differing geometries. Predictions are based upon a second-moment turbulence and scalar-flux closure, and supplemented with full and reduced chemical kinetic mechanisms, ranging from a simple 12-step to a complex 1207-step mechanism. Alongside analysis of the full kinetic schemes' performance, is an appraisal of the behaviour of their derivatives obtained using mechanism-reduction techniques. The study was undertaken to analyse the practicality of incorporating kinetic models of varying complexity into calculations of turbulent non-premixed flames, and to make comparison of their performance. Despite extensive studies of the predictive ability of such schemes under laminar flame conditions, systematic evaluations have not been performed for turbulent reacting flows. This paper reflects upon the impact that selection of chemical kinetics has upon subsequent calculations and concludes that, although application of reduced schemes is more than adequate to reproduce experimental data, selection of the parent mechanism is of paramount importance to the prediction of minor species. Although widely used schemes are well documented and validated, their performances vary considerably. Thus, careful consideration must be made to their application and origins during the evaluation of combustion models.  相似文献

Kinetic calculations within the framework of detailed reaction mechanisms showed that the blue flames observed during autoignition of methane in an internal combustion engine are combined cool-blue flames. In the course of methane oxidation, methyl hydroperoxide CH3O2H and hydrogen peroxide H2O2 appear and accumulate almost simultaneously. The partial decomposition of these species yields a hydroxyl OH concentration peak, thereby giving rise to a local acceleration of the oxidation reaction, accompanied by luminescence. Kinetic curves for the main products were obtained and the boundaries of cool-blue flames were determined, which turned out to be in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

The occurrence of oscillating combustion and combustion instability has led to resurgence of interest in the causes, mechanisms, suppression, and control of combustion noise. Noise generated by enclosed flames is of greater practical interest but is more complicated than that by open flames, which itself is not clearly understood. Studies have shown that different modes of combustion, premixed and non-premixed, differ in their sound generation characteristics. However, there is lack of understanding of the region bridging these two combustion modes. This study investigates sound generation by partially premixed flames. Starting from a non-premixed flame, air was gradually added to achieve partial premixing while maintaining the fuel flow rate constant. Methane, ethylene, and ethane partially premixed flames were studied with hydrogen added for flame stabilization. The sound pressure generated by methane partially premixed flames scales with M5 compared to M3 for turbulent non-premixed methane flames. Also, the sound pressure generated by partially premixed flames of ethane and ethylene scales as M4.5. With progressive partial premixing, spectra level increases at all frequencies with a greater increase in the high-frequency region compared to the low-frequency region; flames develop a peak and later a constant level plateau in the low frequency region. The partially premixed flames of methane, ethylene, and ethane generate a similar SPL as a function of equivalence ratio when the fuel volume flow rate is matched. However, when fuel mass flow rate is matched, the ethane and ethylene flames produce a similar SPL, which is lower than that produced by the methane flame.  相似文献

An automated procedure has been previously developed to generate simplified skeletal reaction mechanisms for the combustion of n-heptane/air mixtures at equivalence ratios between 0.5 and 2.0 and different pressures. The algorithm is based on a Computational Singular Perturbation (CSP)-generated database of importance indices computed from homogeneous n-heptane/air ignition solutions. In this paper, we examine the accuracy of these simplified mechanisms when they are used for modeling laminar n-heptane/air premixed flames. The objective is to evaluate the accuracy of the simplified models when transport processes lead to local mixture compositions that are not necessarily part of the comprehensive homogeneous ignition databases. The detailed mechanism was developed by Curran et al. and involves 560 species and 2538 reactions. The smallest skeletal mechanism considered consists of 66 species and 326 reactions. We show that these skeletal mechanisms yield good agreement with the detailed model for premixed n-heptane flames, over a wide range of equivalence ratios and pressures, for global flame properties. They also exhibit good accuracy in predicting certain elements of internal flame structure, especially the profiles of temperature and major chemical species. On the other hand, we find larger errors in the concentrations of many minor/radical species, particularly in the region where low-temperature chemistry plays a significant role. We also observe that the low-temperature chemistry of n-heptane can play an important role at very lean or very rich mixtures, reaching these limits first at high pressure. This has implications to numerical simulations of non-premixed flames where these lean and rich regions occur naturally.  相似文献

A detailed comparison has been conducted between chemiluminescence (CL) species profiles of OH?, CH?, and C2 ?, obtained experimentally and from detailed flame kinetics modeling, respectively, of atmospheric pressure non-premixed flames formed in the forward stagnation region of a fuel flow ejected from a porous cylinder and an air counterflow. Both pure methane and mixtures of methane with hydrogen (between 10 and 30 % by volume) were used as fuels. By varying the air-flow velocities methane flames were operated at strain rates between 100 and 350 s?1, while for methane/hydrogen flames the strain rate was fixed at 200 s?1. Spatial profiles perpendicular to the flame front were extracted from spectrograms recorded with a spectrometer/CCD camera system and evaluating each spectral band individually. Flame kinetics modeling was accomplished with an in-house chemical mechanism including C1–C4 chemistry, as well as elementary steps for the formation, removal, and electronic quenching of all measured active species. In the CH4/air flames, experiments and model results agree with respect to trends in profile peak intensity and position. For the CH4/H2/air flames, with increasing H2 content in the fuel the experimental CL peak intensities decrease slightly and their peak positions shift towards the fuel side, while for the model the drop in mole fraction is much stronger and the peak positions move closer to the fuel side. For both fuel compositions the modeled profiles peak closer to the fuel side than in the experiments. The discrepancies can only partly be attributed to the limited attainable spatial resolution but may also necessitate revised reaction mechanisms for predicting CL species in this type of flame.  相似文献

Nitric oxide laser-induced-fluorescence (NO-LIF) 2-D imaging measurements using a new multi-spectral detection strategy are reported for high-pressure flames (1-60 bar). This work builds on previous research that identified interference LIF from O2 and CO2 in high-pressure flames and optimized the choice of excitation strategies as a function of application conditions. In this study, design rules are presented to optimize the LIF detection wavelengths for quantitative 2-D NO-LIF measurements over a wide range of pressures (1-60 bar) and temperatures. Simultaneous detection of LIF in multiple wavelength regions enables correction of the NO signal for interference from O2 and CO2 and allows simultaneous imaging of all three species. New experiments of wavelength-resolved 1-D LIF in slightly lean (? = 0.9) and slightly rich (? = 1.1) methane/air flames are used to evaluate the design rules and estimate the NO detection limits for a wide range of flame conditions. The quantitative 2-D measurements of NO in the burnt gas are compared with model calculations (using GRI-Mech 3.0) versus pressure for slightly lean and slightly rich flames. The discussions and demonstrations reported in this study provide a practical guideline for application of instantaneous 1-D or 2-D NO-LIF imaging strategies in high-pressure combustion systems.  相似文献

Three axisymmetric laminar coflow diffusion flames, one of which is a nitrogen-diluted methane/air flame (the ‘base case’) and the other two of which consist of nitrogen-diluted methane vs. pure oxygen, are examined both computationally and experimentally. Computationally, the local rectangular refinement method is used to solve the fully coupled nonlinear conservation equations on solution-adaptive grids. The model includes C2 chemistry (GRI 2.11 and GRI 3.0 chemical mechanisms), detailed transport, and optically thin radiation. Because two of the flames are attached to the burner, thermal boundary conditions at the burner surface are constructed from smoothed functional fits to temperature measurements. Experimentally, Raman scattering is used to measure temperature and major species concentrations as functions of the radial coordinate at various axial positions. As compared to the base case flame, which is lifted, the two oxygen-enhanced flames are shorter, hotter, and attached to the burner. Computational and experimental flame lengths show excellent agreement, as do the maximum centreline temperatures. For each flame, radial profiles of temperature and major species also show excellent agreement between computations and experiments, when plotted at fixed values of a dimensionless axial coordinate. Computational results indicate peak NO levels in the oxygen-enhanced flames to be very high. The majority of the NO in these flames is shown to be produced via the thermal route, whereas prompt NO dominates for the base case flame.  相似文献

A previously proposed algorithm for constructing an optimal mechanism of the high- and low-temperature oxidation and combustion of normal paraffin hydrocarbons was used, which includes the major processes that determine the rate of reaction and the formation of the main intermediate and final products. The mechanism has the status of a nonempirical detailed mechanism, since all the constituent elementary reactions have a kinetic substantiation. The mechanism has two specific features: it included no reactions of so-called double addition of oxygen and no isomeric compounds and derivatives thereof as intermediate species. Realization of this algorithm leads to fairly compact models, a circumstance important for studies of chemical processes involving paraffin hydrocarbons C n with large n. Previously, based on this algorithm, compact mechanisms of oxidation and combustion of propane, n-butane, n-pentane, and n-hexane were constructed. In this paper, we develop a nonempirical detailed mechanism of oxidation and combustion of n-heptane. The most important feature of the new mechanism is its ability to predict the staging of the process in the form of cool and blue flames at low autoignition temperatures. A comparison of the simulation results with the available experimental data is conducted.  相似文献

A numerical and experimental study is performed to investigate soot formation from jet fuel in a laminar coflow diffusion flame. The combustion chemistry of the fuel is simulated using (1) the MURI jet fuel surrogate (Dooley et al. 2012) with a modestly reduced Ranzi mechanism (Ranzi et al. 2012), and (2) the recently proposed HyChem model (Xu et al. 2018) combined with the KAUST PAH mechanism 2 (Wang et al. 2013). The two reaction mechanisms are coupled with a sectional soot model to simulate a coflow diffusion flame of methane doped with the MURI jet fuel surrogate. The combined laser extinction and two-angle elastic light scattering method is used to perform non-intrusive in situ measurements of soot volume fraction, primary particle diameter and number density. The good agreement including soot particle size and number density between the experimental data and the simulation results computed with the reduced Ranzi mechanism demonstrate the robustness of the soot model to changes in fuel composition, as the model parameters are unchanged with a previous numerical study of soot formation of n-propylbenzene/n-dodecane mixtures (Zhang and Thomson, 2018). The computation with the combined HyChem/KAUST mechanism predicts similar results as the computation with the detailed chemistry of the reduced Ranzi mechanism for fuel breakdown, thus the basic premise of the HyChem model that the fuel decomposition process can be greatly simplified with the lumped reaction steps is supported. The results also show that by adding a PAH growth scheme to the HyChem model, the approach can be used to predict soot formation from jet fuel combustion in a laminar coflow diffusion flame. Finally, the dependency of the soot prediction on PAH chemistry is discussed and it is suggested that more experimental data is needed to validate the PAH mechanism and improve the predictive accuracy of the model.  相似文献

A carrier-phase direct numerical simulation (CP-DNS) of pulverized coal combustion in a mixing layer is performed, considering three NOx formation mechanisms (fuel-NOx, thermal-NOx and prompt-NOx). Detailed analyses, including reaction path analysis, chemical timescale analysis, and a priori and budget analyses are conducted to investigate the NOx production mechanisms and the performance of the flamelet model. Considering the high computational cost of CP-DNS, this work focuses on the early phase governed by devolatilization, where char reactions are less important. The reaction path analyses show that the principal thermal-NO reaction contributes to the net consumption of NO in fuel-bound nitrogen pulverized coal flames, which is essentially different from fuel-nitrogen-free flames. The chemical timescale analyses show that the production rates of NOx species are faster than those of major species, which confirms the suitability of the flamelet tables. The a priori analyses show that the gas temperature and major/intermediate species can be predicted well by the flamelet model, while the NOx species show significant discrepancies in certain regions. Finally, the budget analyses explain why the flamelet model performs differently for major/intermediate and NOx species.  相似文献

Ammonia (NH3) direct combustion is attracting attention for energy utilization without CO2 emissions, but fundamental knowledge related to ammonia combustion is still insufficient. This study was designed to examine effects of radiation heat loss on laminar ammonia/air premixed flames because of their very low flame speeds. After numerical simulations for 1-D planar flames with and without radiation heat loss modeled by the optically thin model were conducted, effects of radiation heat loss on flame speeds, flame structure and emissions were investigated. Simulations were also conducted for methane/air mixtures as a reference. Effects of radiation heat loss on flame speeds were strong only near the flammability limits for methane, but were strong over widely diverse equivalence ratios for ammonia. The lower radiative flame temperature suppressed the thermal decomposition of unburned ammonia to hydrogen (H2) at rich conditions. The equivalence ratio for a low emission window of ammonia and nitric oxide (NO) in the radiative condition shifted to a lower value than that in the adiabatic condition.  相似文献

On the basis of a multi-step kinetic mechanism for flame inhibition by organophosphorus compounds including more than 200 reactions, a skeletal mechanism for flame inhibition by trimethylphosphate was developed. The mechanism consists of 22 irreversible elementary reactions, involving nine phosphorus-containing species. Selection of the crucial steps was performed by analysing P-element fluxes from species to species and by calculating net reaction rates of phosphorus-involving reactions versus the flames zone. The developed mechanism was validated by comparing the modelling results with the measured and simulated (using the starting initial mechanism) speed and the chemical structure of H2/O2, CH4/O2 and syngas/air flames doped with trimethylphosphate. The mechanism was shown to satisfactorily predict the speed of H2/O2/N2 flames with various dilution ratios, CH4/air and syngas/air flames doped with trimethylphosphate. The skeletal mechanism was also shown to satisfactorily predict the spatial variation of H and OH radicals and the final phosphorus-containing products of the inhibitor combustion. Further reduction of the skeletal mechanism without modification of the rate constants recommended in the starting mechanism was shown to result in noticeable disagreement of the flame speed and structure.  相似文献

Laminar co-flow methane–oxygen flames issuing into the unconfined atmosphere have been studied. A numerical model, which employs different chemical kinetics sub-models, including a skeletal mechanism with 43 reaction steps and 18 species and four global reaction mechanisms (two 2-steps and two 4-steps mechanisms), and an optically thin radiation sub-model, has been employed in the simulations. Numerical model has been validated against the experimental results available in literature. The numerical predictions from the global kinetic mechanisms have been compared with the 43-steps mechanism predictions. At all oxygen flow rates, the predictions of the distributions of temperature, mass fractions of CH4, O2 and CO2 by the 2-steps mechanisms are closer to 43-steps mechanism. The overall distribution of H2O predicted by 2-steps mechanisms is close to that of 43-steps except for the maximum value. Especially at higher oxygen flow rates, the modified 2-steps mechanism predicts these quantities much closer to those predicted by the 43-steps mechanism. Further, the 2-steps mechanisms predict location of the reaction zone accurately. However, they can just give an idea of overall CO distribution in terms of the axial and radial locations within which CO will almost be consumed, but not its maximum value in the domain. The 4-steps mechanisms predict the trend of variation of these quantities quite reasonably. However, they under-predict the location of the reaction zone. At higher oxygen flow rates, the predictions by 4-steps mechanisms becomes better, especially in the prediction of maximum CO and H2O. Over all, the modified 2-steps mechanism can be recommended for reasonable and economical predictions of oxy-rich methane flames.  相似文献

Spectrally resolved laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) with one-dimensional spatial imaging was investigated as a technique for detection of trace concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) in high-pressure flames. Experiments were performed in the burnt gases of premixed methane/argon/oxygen flames with seeded NO (15 to 50 ppm), pressures of 10 to 60 bar, and an equivalence ratio of 0.9. LIF signals were dispersed with a spectrometer and recorded on a 2-D intensified CCD array yielding both spectral resolution and 1-D spatial resolution. This method allows isolation of NO-LIF from interference signals due to alternative species (mainly hot O2 and CO2) while providing spatial resolution along the line of the excitation laser. A fast data analysis strategy was developed to enable pulse-by-pulse NO concentration measurements from these images. Statistical analyses as a function of laser energy of these single-shot data were used to determine the detection limits for NO concentration as well as the measurement precision. Extrapolating these results to pulse energies of ~?16 mJ/pulse yielded a predicted detection limit of ~?10 ppm for pressures up to 60 bar. Quantitative 1-D LIF measurements were performed in CH4/air flames to validate capability for detection of nascent NO in flames at 10–60 bar.  相似文献

Large eddy simulations (LES) for turbulent flames with detailed kinetic mechanisms have received growing interest. However, a direct implementation of detailed kinetic mechanisms in LES modelling of turbulent combustion remains a challenge due to the requirement of huge computational resources. An on-the-fly mechanism reduction method named correlated dynamic adaptive chemistry (CoDAC) is proposed to overcome this issue. A LES was conducted for Sandia Flame-D, with the reaction mechanism of GRI-Mech 3.0 consisting of 53 species and 325 reactions. The reduction threshold used in LES was obtained a priori by using auto-ignition model and partially stirred reactor (PaSR) with pairwise mixing model. LES results with CoDAC are in good agreement with experimental data and those without reduction. The conditional mean of the number of selected species indicates that a large size of locally reduced mechanism is required in the reaction zone where CH4 is destructed. A computational time analysis shows that the PaSR model predicts better than the auto-ignition model on the wall time reduction with CoDAC in LES.  相似文献

Lean premixed combustion has potential advantages of reducing pollutants and improving fuel economy. In some lean engine concepts, the fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber resulting in a distribution of lean fuel/air mixtures. In this case, very lean mixtures can burn when supported by hot products from more strongly burning flames. This study examines the downstream interaction of opposed jets of a lean-limit CH4/air mixture vs. a lean H2/air flame. The CH4 mixtures are near or below the lean flammability limit. The flame composition is measured by laser-induced Raman scattering and is compared to numerical simulations with detailed chemistry and molecular transport including the Soret effect. Several sub-limit lean CH4/air flames supported by the products from the lean H2/air flame are studied, and a small amount of CO2 product (around 1% mole fraction) is formed in a “negative flame speed” flame where the weak CH4/air mixture diffuses across the stagnation plane into the hot products from the H2/air flame. Raman scattering measurements of temperature and species concentration are compared to detailed simulations using GRI-3.0, C1, and C2 chemical kinetic mechanisms, with good agreement obtained in the lean-limit or sub-limit flames. Stronger self-propagating CH4/air mixtures result in a much higher concentration of product (around 6% CO2 mole fraction), and the simulation results are sensitive to the specific chemical mechanism. These model-data comparisons for stronger CH4/air flames improve when using either the C2 or the Williams mechanisms.  相似文献

NO formation and flame propagation are studied in premixed flames of iso- and n-isomers of butane and butanol through experimental measurements and direct simulation of experimental profiles. The stabilized flame is realized through the impingement of a premixed combustible jet from a contraction nozzle against a temperature-controlled plate. The velocity field is obtained by means of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and nitric oxide concentration profiles are measured using Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF), calibrated using known NO seeding levels. It is found that NO formation in n- and iso-isomers is comparable under the conditions considered, except for rich butanol mixtures, whereby NO formation is higher for iso-butanol. Generally, less NO is formed in butanol flames than in the butane flames. The experiment is simulated by a 1D chemically reacting stagnation flow model, using literature models of C1–C4 hydrocarbons [Wang et al., 2010] and butanol combustion chemistry [Sarathy et al., 2009, 2012]. NO prediction is tested using two of these mechanisms with a previously-published NOx submechanism added into the butane and butanol models. While a good level of agreement is observed in the velocity field prediction under lean and stoichiometric conditions, discrepancies exist under rich conditions. Greater discrepancies are observed in NO prediction, except for the C1–C4 mechanism which shows good agreement with the experiment under lean and stoichiometric conditions. The current study provides data for further development of mechanisms with NOx prediction capabilities for the fuels considered here.  相似文献
