Abstract

The polygonization phenomenon observed on alkali halide surfaces, irradiated with electrons and subsequently illuminated, was studied by optical and electron microscopy. For the explanation of the nature and mechanism of this process, we have investigated the influence of light (containing the F?centre absorption band) on the development and annihilation in time of some polygonization lines, as well as the correlation of the polygonization patterns with dislocation etch pits and subgrain boundaries revealed by a selective chemical etching.

Preceded by an optical bleaching effect which locally induces surface potential changes, the polygonization process is explained taking into account the mobility of unpinned charged dislocations and the surface atom migration. The disappearance of some polygonization lines may be produced by a vacancy-interstitial annihilation process.

No identification was found between the polygonization patterns and the subgrain boundaries.  相似文献

Abstract

Results are presented of an analysis of the Mueller matrix parameters for the problem of scattering of light from two-dimensional rough surfaces. The Mueller matrix fully describes the polarization properties of the scattered light. It is shown, using symmetry arguments, that for normal incidence it is necessary to measure the Mueller matrix terms in only one plane, thus reducing the amount of data to be analysed. Examples of the form of the Mueller matrix terms are calculated using a simple ray-trace approach.  相似文献

An extensive comparison has been carried out between calculated and measured bulk properties of H2–helium mixtures. Detailed comparisons are presented for the interaction second virial coefficient, binary diffusion, mixture shear viscosity and thermal conductivity, rotational relaxation, thermal diffusion field-effects, collision broadening of the depolarized Rayleigh light scattering spectrum, and flow birefringence. Scattering calculations have been carried out for the ab initio potential energy surfaces obtained by Tao (1994, J. chem. Phys., 100, 4947) and Schaefer and Köhler (1985, Physica A, 129, 469). The values for the various bulk gas properties calculated from these two potential surfaces are generally found to lie within or near the experimental uncertainties.  相似文献

Abstract

The application of a novel fiber-optic technique for the determination of the refractive index of liquids under high pressure is outlined. The present method is based on th measurements of the scattered light intensity on certain types of rough surfaces. Here we present the effect of pressure on the refractive index of castor oil. A significant increase of the refractive index has been observed in the whole range of pressure up to 0.8 GPa.  相似文献

Abstract

Diffuse reflection of a narrow collimated light beam from a slab of a dense random medium is considered theoretically and experimentally for the case of the source and the detector fibres dipped into the random medium, as is the case for an endoscopic catheter. By use of the diffusion approximation, a simple and physically clear analytical expression is derived for the distribution of the diffuse reflectance of the light beam along the surface of the random medium slab. We include the effects of reflections from the top and bottom surfaces of the slab. The analytical expression derived predicts that, in the case of small absorption, the relative reflectance is a universal function defined by the geometrical parameters and is independent of specific properties of the random medium. The theoretical prediction is found to show good agreement with the results of measurements.  相似文献

Abstract

The enhanced backscattering of light from a random surface is manifested by a well defined peak in the retro-reflection direction in the angular distribution of the intensity of the incoherent component of the light scattered from such a surface. In this paper we present several new theoretical and experimental results bearing on the conditions under which enhanced backscattering occurs, and the way in which this phenomenon depends on the nature of the random surface roughness, both in the case that the random surface bounds a semi-infinite scattering medium and in the case that it bounds a film, either free-standing or on a reflecting substrate. In addition, we present new results on the transmission of light through thin metallic films bounded by random surfaces, which display the phenomenon of enhanced transmission, namely a well defined peak in the antispecular direction in the angular distribution of the intensity of the incoherent component of the light transmitted through such films.  相似文献

GaN-based irregular multiple quantum well(IMQW) structures assembled two different types of QWs emitting complementary wavelengths for dichromatic white light-emitting diodes(LEDs) are optimized in order to obtain near white light emissions.The hole distributions and spontaneous emission spectra of the IMQW structures are analysed in detail by fully considering the effects of strain,well-coupling,valence band-mixing and polarization effect through employing a newly developed theoretical model from the k · p theory.Several structure parameters such as well material component,well width,layout of the wells and the thickness of barrier between different types of QWs are employed to analyse how these parameters together with the polarization effect influence the electronic and the optical properties of IMQW structure.Numerical results show that uniform hole distributions in different types of QWs are obtained when the number of the QWs emitting blue light is two,the number of the QWs emitting yellow light is one and the barrier between different types of QWs is 8nm in thickness.The near white light emission is realized using GaN-based IMQW structure with appropriate design parameters and injection level.  相似文献

Abstract

The temporal fluctuations in the intensity of light scattered by a moving layer of emulsions and suspensions containing Brownian particles are investigated experimentally, and a comparison is made with light scattered by a translating phase screen. The intensity fluctuations of the scattered light are detected through an imaging system, which collects the light emanating only from a limited volume in the medium. The effect of translational motion of the particle layer on the decay rate of the autocorrelation function of intensity fluctuations depends on the illuminating form of a laser beam and on the point spread function of the imaging system. The Brownian motion of the particles causes the scattered light to fluctuate more rapidly than that arising from the translating phase screen. In the multiple-scattering regime, the influence of this diffusional motion increases with an increase of the particle concentration in the layer.  相似文献

Abstract

By the use of a unitarity and reciprocity conserving theory for the scattering of p-polarized light from a one-dimensional random dielectric surface the we determine the shift in the Brewster angle toward smaller angles of incidence caused by the surface roughness, and the (non-zero) value of the reflectivity at its minimum. Both quantities may be useful in the characterization of the roughness of such surfaces.  相似文献

The exact solution of the thermoelasticity problem obtained by the authors for a cylinder, one of whose end surfaces is heated while the other is cooled, is used for the first time to quantitatively describe the influence of the magnitude and direction of the heat flux on the contact thermal resistance. It is shown that appreciable macrowaviness of the original flat contacting surfaces can appear as a result of thermal expansion of the contacting samples when heat flows through the contact. A possible mechanism for the formation and processing of an x-ray image using a corresponding optical image as a template is considered. The method is based on the thermal influence of light on the x-ray diffraction parameters of an LiNbO3 crystal. A mechanism for the influence of the gradients of the temperature fields formed in the crystal on the x-ray structural parameters of the crystal is proposed. ABSTRACT

The influence of non-adiabatic effects on the ro-vibrational bound states of H+ 3 has been investigated using geometry-dependent reduced masses and only one single potential energy surface. The used potentials (BO electronic energy, adiabatic corrections and relativistic contributions) are based on explicitly correlated wavefunctions. For the first time, several different fully geometry-dependent reduced mass surfaces in three dimensions have been incorporated for the vibrational and rotational contributions.  相似文献

Superenhanced light transmission through subwavelength rectangular hole arrays have been reported and some investigations have been made into the physical origin of this phenomenon [K.J. Klein Koerkamp et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 183901 (2004)]. In our current work, by performing FDTD (finite difference in the time domain) numerical simulations, we demonstrate that mechanism that is different from surface plasmon polaritons set up by the periodicity at the in-plane metal surfaces may account for this superenhanced light transmission. We suggest that for arrays of rectangular holes with small enough width in comparison to the wavelength of the incident light, standing electromagnetic fields can be set up inside the cavity by the surface plasmons on the hole walls with its intensity being substantially enhanced inside the cavity. So resonant cavity-enhanced light transmission is predominant and responsible for its superenhanced light transmission. Rectangular holes behave as Fabry-Pérot resonance cavities except that the frequency of their fundamental modes is restricted by their TM cutoff frequency. However we believe that both localized surface plasmon modes and surface plasmon polaritons set up by the periodicity at the in-plane metal surfaces have their shares in extraordinary optical transmission of rectangular hole arrays especially when the width of the rectangular hole is not small enough and the metal film is not thick enough.  相似文献

A numerical study is done on light scattering from one-dimensional random rough surfaces supporting both dielectrics and metals. The influence of the corrugation on the Brewster angle as well as on the angular distribution of transmitted intensity into the dielectric is investigated. The authors also obtain enhanced backscattering in the light reflected from metallic surfaces. Finally they discuss the influence of roughness on the drop of reflectance due to polariton absorption.  相似文献

The features of the optical and magnetooptical properties of granular alloys with giant magnetoresistance in the IR region are examined in reference to the magnetorefractive effect and the equatorial Kerr effect. Calculations are performed within the semiclassical approximation with consideration of spin-dependent scattering in the bulk of the granules and on their surfaces (interfaces). The expressions obtained for σ xx(ω) and σ xy(ω) are found to be sensitive to scattering on the surfaces and in the bulk of the granules, as well as to granule size, the type of impurities trapped on the interfaces, the frequency of the incident light, and the external magnetic field. For granular thin films exhibiting giant magnetoresistance, the theory predicts significant relative changes in the optical reflection and transmission coefficients when the sample is magnetized to saturation (0.02% and 20%, respectively, for giant magnetoresistance of the order of 20%), as well as Kerr and Faraday effects that are nonlinear with respect to magnetization. The interaction of excitons with rough surfaces and its effect on light scattering spectra were investigated theoretically. We have employed a model for the excitonic surface potential based upon the generalized Morse potential, taking into account its random fluctuations produced by the surface roughness. Applying first-order perturbation theory, we calculate the cross section of light scattering from a rough GaAs surface and analyze its frequency dependence in the presence of an extrinsic surface-potential well with excitonic bound states. A physical experiment and computer simulation of scattering of low-energy Cs+ ions from the surfaces of heavy and light metals are discussed. The presented experimental and calculated data confirm the influence of the interatomic bond of a target on the scattered ion energy. Correlation between the scattered ion energy and the melting heat of a scattering target is established.  相似文献

It has been shown that transport barriers in toroidal magnetically confined plasmas tend to be linked to regions of unique magnetic topology such as the location of a minimum in the safety factor, rational surfaces or the boundary between closed and open flux surfaces. In the absence ofE×B sheared flows, fluctuations are expected to show maximum amplitude near rational surfaces, and plasma confinement might tend to deteriorate. On the other hand, if the generation ofE×B sheared flows were linked to low order rational surfaces, these would be beneficial for confinement. Experimental evidence ofE×B sheared flows linked to rational surfaces has been obtained in the plasma edge region of the TJ-II stellarator. The temporal evolution of a long-pulse high-density electron beam in a high-power traveling-wave tube with a periodic magnetic focusing system is investigated. The relation between the variation of the characteristics of the electron beam and ionization of the residual gas and particles desorbed from the electrode surfaces is shown. A strong influence of the formation of the collector plasma and the flux of ions from its surface on the beam dynamics is revealed.
