We present a theoretical study of all-optical multistability in an integrated device composed by a step-index nonlinear Kerr waveguide with a variable width film, providing an effective graded-index profile. The self- and cross-action of nonlinear Gaussian counterpropagating beams in this structure and a feedback controlling mechanism based on transverse modal coupling generate a multistable behavior. The results have been obtained and explained on the basis of the exact solutions of the variational problem for the counterpropagating Gaussian beams. Finally, in order to make clear the possibilities of this device, novel applications of the all-optical multistable integrated device are proposed for smart sensing.  相似文献

A counterpropagating quasi-phase-matched configuration is examined that is capable of efficiently producing second-order cascaded nonlinear phase shifts with minimal power lost to the second harmonic. For all-optical switching in a nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the calculated minimum input power needed for switching (i.e., to yield a +/-pi/2 phase shift) is 40 times smaller than the power needed in the standard typeI copropagating configuration. The throughput of this counterpropagating device is 96% at the optimum switching point.  相似文献

We demonstrate nonlinearly induced nonreciprocity of counterpropagating waves in a monolithically integrated Sagnac interferometer that employs a semiconductor optical amplifier as the nonlinear element. We show that the dependence of the linewidth enhancement factor on charge injection can influence the third-order nonlinearity in the semiconductor gain medium to a surprisingly large degree. This effect is utilized to control the phases of the counterpropagating signals in the interferometer. A theoretical model is used to explain the experimental observations. We show that these effects have significant practical implications by demonstrating an all-optical controlled-NOT gate.  相似文献

Careful studies of coupling show that transmittance power between microring and waveguide is dependant to field intensity. Also more researches show that optical multistable behavior of microring had been affected by nonlinear power coupling efficiency in high field intensities. Operation of microring in nonlinear regions can be so useful in designing all optical switches and control techniques. Physics of counterpropagating optical beams and spatial optical solitons is reviewed, including the formation of stationary states and spatiotemporal instabilities. First, several models describing the evolution and interactions between optical beams and spatial solitons are discussed, that propagate in opposite directions in nonlinear media. It is shown that coherent collisions between counterpropagating beams give rise to an interesting focusing mechanism resulting from the interference between the beams, and that interactions between such beams are insensitive to the relative phase between them. Second, recent experimental observations of the counterpropagation effects and instabilities in waveguides and bulk geometries, as well as in one‐ and two‐dimensional photonic lattices are discussed. A variety of different generalizations of this concept are summarized, including the counterpropagating beams of complex structures, such as multipole beams and optical vortices, as well as the beams in different media, such as photorefractive materials and liquid crystals.  相似文献

We propose and analyze a novel geometry for all-optical processing of low-power signals that is based on a frequency-nondegenerate counterpropagating parametric amplifier. The stationary response in the cascading regime exhibits multivalued solutions with enhanced nonlinear phase shifts. Implementation in a quasi-phase-matched LiNbO(3) waveguide is discussed.  相似文献

We report the operation of a bidirectional femtosecond pulsed ring optical parametric oscillator based on periodically poled lithium niobate, pumped alternately with nonsimultaneous pulses from a Ti:sapphire mode-locked laser. A beat note between the two counterpropagating beams attests to a gyro response without dead band. The sensitivity of the device to differential phase changes is demonstrated by measurement of the nonlinear index of lithium niobate.  相似文献

We propose a scheme for tapered laser cooling of coasting ion beams in storage rings. Tapered cooling has recently been shown to be crucial for attaining crystalline ion beams. The scheme proposed here, based on a relative displacement of a co- and a counterpropagating Gaussian laser beam, gives a radial variation in the equilibrium velocities to which particles are cooled. The variation is approximately linear in a relatively large range transverse to the laser beams. Expressions for the spatially dependent equilibrium velocities and the range of the tapered cooling forces are derived. We discuss the dependence on laser beam parameters as well as the limitations of this cooling scheme.  相似文献

当高功率激光通过Kerr非线性介质传输时,Kerr效应会严重影响激光的传输特性.实际应用中常遇到像散光束.迄今为止,像散光束传输特性的研究大都局限于在线性介质中的传输,而在非线性介质中传输的研究较少,且还未涉及像散激光束通过含光学系统的Kerr非线性介质传输变换的研究.本文主要研究Kerr效应对聚焦光束像散特性和焦移特性的影响,以及聚焦像散高斯光束的自聚焦焦距和光束焦点调控.在光束扩展情况下,推导出了聚焦像散高斯光束在Kerr非线性介质中传输的束宽、束腰位置和焦移的解析公式,研究表明:在自聚焦介质中,随着自聚焦作用增强(如光束功率增强),光束像散越强,但焦移越小;在自散焦介质中,随着自散焦作用增强(如光束功率增强),光束像散越弱,但焦移越大.另一方面,在光束自聚焦情况下,推导出了自聚焦焦距的解析公式,研究表明利用光束像散可以调控光束焦点个数.  相似文献

给出一种分析二阶非线性级联效应的解析方法,对Ⅱ型二次谐波产生的非线性级联效应进行了详细的理论研究和分析。结果表明倍频晶体中正交输入两个振幅不相等的基波分量时,在近相位匹配下二阶非线性级联效应能够产生大的相移。利用本文的解析方法可以对任意二阶非线性相移产生的过程进行优化,从而以最小的需求输入功率来获得特定的相移。还对由非线性相移诱导的且与光强有关的偏振旋转效应和一种基于偏振旋转效应的全光偏振开关进行了分析和讨论。本文的结果对于建立一种基于Ⅱ型倍频晶体中非线性相移诱导偏振旋转效应的新全固化被动锁模飞秒激光装置具有十分重要的意义。  相似文献

We consider a nonlinear ring resonator pumped symmetrically by two beams of equal intensities and opposite directions. We show that this system is characterized by a new directionally asymmetrical regime of multistability. This is due to the non-reciprocity of propagation of the counterpropagating waves in the resonator produced by a nonlinear index grating.  相似文献

We review the theory of light localization due to the combined action of single or double Bragg coupling between dichromatic counterpropagating envelopes and parametric mixing nonlinearities. We discuss existence, stability, and excitation of such localized envelopes. We also investigate the link between stationary gap solitons and input-output response of nonlinear quadratic Bragg gratings. Frustrated transmission and multistable switching is expected to occur under suitable integrable (cascading) limits. Substantial deviations from these conditions lead to the onset of spatial chaos. 采用数值模拟方法研究了高斯光束在四种间距调制型光子晶格中的传输规律. 研究发现: 在具有两个正双曲正割势垒和矩形势垒的晶格阵列中, 光波在势垒处发生明显的衍射现象, 而在势阱处发生强烈的局域现象; 在具有两个负双曲正割势垒和负矩形势垒的晶格阵列中, 光波可在势垒处发生无反射传输或在势垒中发生局域现象; 而在势阱中振荡衰减传输. 研究还发现在低功率情况下, 负势垒支持的线性模式间可以发生振荡耦合; 高功率非线性情况下, 光波将发生局域现象. 研究结果为利用光子晶格调节和控制光波传输, 实现全光开关提供了新的思路和方法. 关键词: 调制型光子晶格 波导阵列 模式 光开关  相似文献

We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, optical bistability on a highly integrated silicon device, using a 5-microm-radius ring resonator. The strong light-confinement nature of the resonator induces nonlinear optical response with low pump power. We show that the optical bistability allows all-optical functionalities, such as switching and memory with microsecond time response and a modulation depth of 10 dB, driven by pump power as low as 45 microW. Silicon optical bistability relies on a fast thermal nonlinear optical effect presenting a 500-kHz modulation bandwidth.  相似文献

We report the operation of an all-optical set-reset (SR) flip-flop based on vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOAs). This flip-flop is cascadable, has low optical switching power (~10 microW), and has the potential to be integrated on a small footprint (~100 microm(2)). The flip-flop is composed of two cross-coupled electrically pumped VCSOA inverters and uses the principles of cross-gain modulation, polarization gain anisotropy, and highly nonlinear gain characteristics to achieve flip-flop functionality. We believe that, when integrated on chip, this type of all-optical flip-flop opens new prospects for implementing all-optical fast memories and timing regeneration circuits.  相似文献
