A mixing controlled direct chemistry (MCDC) combustion model with sub-grid scale (SGS) mixing effects and chemical kinetics has been evaluated for Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of diesel engine combustion. The mixing effect is modelled by a mixing timescale based on mixture fraction variance and sub-grid scalar dissipation rate. The SGS scalar dissipation rate is modelled using a similarity term and a scaling factor from the analysis of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data. The chemical reaction progress is estimated from a kinetic timescale based on local internal energy change rate and equilibrium state internal energy. An optical research engine operating at conventional operating conditions and Low Temperature Combustion (LTC) conditions was used for evaluation of the combustion model. From the simulation results, the effect of SGS scalar mixing is evaluated at different stages of combustion. In the context of LES, the new approach provides improved engine modelling results compared to the Direct Chemistry Solver (DCS) combustion model.  相似文献

A transport equation for scalar flux in turbulent premixed flames was modelled on the basis of DNS databases. Fully developed turbulent premixed flames were obtained for three different density ratios of flames with a single-step irreversible reaction, while the turbulent intensity was comparable to the laminar burning velocity. These DNS databases showed that the countergradient diffusion was dominant in the flame region. Analyses of the Favre-averaged transport equation for turbulent scalar flux proved that the pressure related terms and the velocity–reaction rate correlation term played important roles on the countergradient diffusion, while the mean velocity gradient term, the mean progress variable gradient term and dissipation terms suppressed it. Based on these analyses, modelling of the combustion-related terms was discussed. The mean pressure gradient term and the fluctuating pressure term were modelled by scaling, and these models were in good agreement with DNS databases. The dissipation terms and the velocity–reaction rate correlation term were also modelled, and these models mimicked DNS well.  相似文献

Accurate prediction of non-premixed turbulent combustion using large eddy simulation (LES) requires detailed modelling of the mixing between fuel and oxidizer that occurs at scales smaller than the LES filterwidth. The small-scale mixing process can be quantitatively characterized by two related variables, the subfilter scalar variance and the subfilter scalar dissipation rate. A recently proposed alternative dynamic modelling procedure for the subfilter scale dissipation rate, designed for use with transport equation based models for subfilter scalar variance, is analysed in this work. This new dynamic non-equilibrium modelling approach produces a nonlinear interaction between variance and dissipation rate predictions that makes it difficult to isolate the performance of any single modelling component in a conventional LES simulation. To gain a better understanding of the new model, a three-part study is undertaken here. The first part of the study uses a priori analysis to examine some novel aspects of the model’s computation and guide its practical implementation. In the second part of the study, detailed a posteriori analysis of the model is performed. This analysis suggests that the dynamic estimate of the dissipation rate model coefficient helps to compensate for over-prediction of variance production rates and improves the accuracy of variance prediction. However, improved modelling of the variance production term, which in turn depends on the accuracy of models for the subfilter scalar flux, is necessary to allow both the scalar variance and dissipation rate to be predicted accurately. Therefore, the third part of the study examines the effect of the scalar flux model on the predictions of the dynamic non-equilibrium model. Use of a mixed model for the fluxes, rather than a gradient-diffusion-only model, is found to improve variance predictions in some cases.  相似文献

While the mean and unconditional variance are to be predicted well by any reasonable turbulent combustion model, these are generally not sufficient for the accurate modelling of complex phenomena such as extinction/reignition. An additional criterion has been recently introduced: accurate modelling of the dissipation timescales associated with fluctuations of scalars about their conditional mean (conditional dissipation timescales). Analysis of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) results for a passive scalar shows that the conditional dissipation timescale is of the order of the integral timescale and smaller than the unconditional dissipation timescale. A model is proposed: the conditional dissipation timescale is proportional to the integral timescale. This model is used in Multiple Mapping Conditioning (MMC) modelling for a passive scalar case and a reactive scalar case, comparing to DNS results for both. The results show that this model improves the accuracy of MMC predictions so as to match the DNS results more closely using a relatively-coarse spatial resolution compared to other turbulent combustion models.  相似文献

The statistical behaviour and closure of sub-grid scalar fluxes in the context of turbulent premixed combustion have been assessed based on an a priori analysis of a detailed chemistry Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) database consisting of three hydrogen-air flames spanning the corrugated flamelets (CF), thin reaction zones (TRZ) and broken reaction zones (BRZ) regimes of premixed turbulent combustion. The sub-grid scalar fluxes have been extracted by explicit filtering of DNS data. It has been found that the conventional gradient hypothesis model is not appropriate for the closure of sub-grid scalar flux for any scalar in the context of a multispecies system. However, the predictions of the conventional gradient hypothesis exhibit a greater level of qualitative agreement with DNS data for the flame representing the BRZ regime. The aforementioned behaviour has been analysed in terms of the properties of the invariants of the anisotropy tensor in the Lumley triangle. The flames in the CF and TRZ regimes are characterised by a pronounced two-dimensional anisotropy due to strong heat release whereas a three-dimensional and more isotropic behaviour is observed for the flame located in the BRZ regime. Two sub-grid scalar flux models which are capable of predicting counter-gradient transport have been considered for a priori DNS assessment of multispecies systems and have been analysed in terms of both qualitative and quantitative agreements. By combining the latter two sub-grid scalar flux closures, a new modelling strategy is suggested where one model is responsible for properly predicting the conditional mean accurately and the other model is responsible for the correlations between model and unclosed term. Detailed physical explanations for the observed behaviour and an assessment of existing modelling assumptions have been provided. Finally, the classical Bray–Moss–Libby theory for the scalar flux closure has been extended to address multispecies transport in the context of large eddy simulations.  相似文献

The velocity-scalar filtered joint density function (FJDF) used in large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent combustion is experimentally studied. Measurements are made in the fully developed region of an axisymmetric turbulent jet using an array consisting of three X-wires and resistance-wire temperature sensors. Filtering in the cross-stream and streamwise directions is realized by using the array and by invoking Taylor’s hypothesis, respectively. The means of the FJDF conditional on the subgrid-scale (SGS) turbulent kinetic energy and the SGS scalar variance at a given location range from close to joint normal to bimodal with the peaks separated in both velocity and scalar spaces, which correspond to qualitatively different mixing regimes. For close to joint normal FJDFs, the SGS fields are well mixed. For bimodal FJDFs, the conditionally filtered scalar diffusion and dissipation strongly depend on the SGS velocity and scalar, consistent with a combination of diffusion layers and plane strain in the SGS fields, which is similar to the counter-flow model for laminar flamelets. The results suggest that in LES, both mixing regimes could potentially be modeled accurately. The velocity field affects the SGS variance and the filtered scalar dissipation rate primarily by changing the degree of nonequilibrium of the SGS scalar and the SGS time scale, respectively. This study further demonstrates the importance of including velocity in mixing models.  相似文献

The statistical behaviour and the modelling of turbulent scalar flux transport have been analysed using a direct numerical simulation (DNS) database of head-on quenching of statistically planar turbulent premixed flames by an isothermal wall. A range of different values of Damköhler, Karlovitz numbers and Lewis numbers has been considered for this analysis. The magnitudes of the turbulent transport and mean velocity gradient terms in the turbulent scalar flux transport equation remain small in comparison to the pressure gradient, molecular dissipation and reaction-velocity fluctuation correlation terms in the turbulent scalar flux transport equation when the flame is away from the wall but the magnitudes of all these terms diminish and assume comparable values during flame quenching before vanishing altogether. It has been found that the existing models for the turbulent transport, pressure gradient, molecular dissipation and reaction-velocity fluctuation correlation terms in the turbulent scalar flux transport equation do not adequately address the respective behaviours extracted from DNS data in the near-wall region during flame quenching. Existing models for transport equation-based closures of turbulent scalar flux have been modified in such a manner that these models provide satisfactory prediction both near to and away from the wall.  相似文献

Turbulent piloted Bunsen flames of stoichiometric methane–air mixtures are computed using the large eddy simulation (LES) paradigm involving an algebraic closure for the filtered reaction rate. This closure involves the filtered scalar dissipation rate of a reaction progress variable. The model for this dissipation rate involves a parameter βc representing the flame front curvature effects induced by turbulence, chemical reactions, molecular dissipation, and their interactions at the sub-grid level, suggesting that this parameter may vary with filter width or be a scale-dependent. Thus, it would be ideal to evaluate this parameter dynamically by LES. A procedure for this evaluation is discussed and assessed using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data and LES calculations. The probability density functions of βc obtained from the DNS and LES calculations are very similar when the turbulent Reynolds number is sufficiently large and when the filter width normalised by the laminar flame thermal thickness is larger than unity. Results obtained using a constant (static) value for this parameter are also used for comparative evaluation. Detailed discussion presented in this paper suggests that the dynamic procedure works well and physical insights and reasonings are provided to explain the observed behaviour.  相似文献

Classical large-eddy simulation (LES) modelling assumes that the passive subgrid-scale (SGS) models do not influence large-scale quantities, even though there is now ample evidence of this in many flows. In this work, direct numerical simulation (DNS) and large-eddy simulations of turbulent planar jets at Reynolds number ReH = 6000 including a passive scalar with Schmidt number Sc = 0.7 are used to study the effect of several SGS models on the flow integral quantities e.g. velocity and scalar jet spreading rates. The models analysed are theSmagorinsky, dynamic Smagorinsky, shear-improved Smagorinsky and the Vreman. Detailed analysis of the thin layer bounding the turbulent and non-turbulent regions – the so-called turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) – shows that this region raises new challenges for classical SGS models. The small scales are far from equilibrium and contain a high fraction of the total kinetic energy and scalar variance, but the situation is worse for the scalar than for the velocity field. Both a-priori and a-posteriori (LES) tests show that the dynamic Smagorinsky and shear-improved models give the best results because they are able to accurately capture the correct statistics of the velocity and passive scalar fluctuations near the TNTI. The results also suggest the existence of a critical resolution Δx, of the order of the Taylor scale λ, which is needed for the scalar field. Coarser passive scalar LES i.e. Δx ≥ λ results in dramatic changes in the integral quantities. This fact is explained by the dynamics of the small scales near the jet interface.  相似文献

Linear relations between (i) filtered reaction rate and filtered flame surface density (FSD) and (ii) filtered reaction rate and filtered scalar dissipation rate (SDR), which are widely used in Large Eddy Simulation (LES) research into premixed turbulent combustion, are examined by processing DNS data obtained from a statistically 1D planar flame under weakly turbulent conditions that are most favourable for the two approaches (flamelet combustion regime, single-step chemistry, equidiffusive mixture, adiabatic burner, and low Mach number). The analysis well supports the former approach provided that the filtered reaction rate is combined with filtered molecular transport term. In such a case, both the RANS and LES FSD approaches are based on local relations valid within weakly perturbed flamelets. Accordingly, simply recasting RANS expressions to a filtered form works well. On the contrary, while the FSD and SDR approaches appear to be basically similar at first glance, the analysis does not support the latter one, but shows that a ratio of the filtered reaction rate to the filtered SDR is strongly scattered within the studied flame brush, with its conditionally mean value varying significantly with Favre-filtered combustion progress variable. As argued in the paper, these limitations of the LES SDR approach stem from the fact that it is based on a relation valid after integration over weakly perturbed flamelets, but this relation does not hold locally within such flamelets. Consequently, when a sufficiently small filter is applied to instantaneous fields, the filter may contain only a part of the local flamelet, whereas the linear relation holds solely for the entire flamelet and may not hold within the filtered flamelet volume. Thus, the present study implies that straightforwardly recasting well-established RANS equations to a filtered form is a flawed approach if the equations are based on integral features of local burning.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of passive (non-buoyant) and active (buoyant) scalar homogeneous turbulence is carried out using a standard pseudo-spectral numerical method. The flow settings simulated include stationary forced and decaying passive-scalar turbulence, as well as decaying anisotropic active-scalar turbulence. The Schmidt number is unity in all cases. The results are compared with, and are found to be in very good agreement with, previous similar DNS studies. The well-validated DNS data are divided into 19 sets, and are employed to study different large eddy simulation (LES) subgrid-scale (SGS) models for the SGS scalar flux. The models examined include three eddy-viscosity-type models (Smagorinsky, Vreman and Sigma with a constant SGS Schmidt number), a Dynamic Structure model and two versions of the Gradient (Gradient and Modulated Gradient) model. The models are investigated with respect to their ability to predict the orientation, and the magnitude, of the SGS scalar flux. Eddy-viscosity models are found to predict the magnitude of the SGS scalar flux accurately, but are poor at predicting the orientation of the SGS scalar flux. The Dynamic Structure and Gradient models are better than eddy-viscosity models at predicting both the magnitude and direction. However, neither of them can be realised in an actual LES, without carrying additional transport equations. Based on these observations, four new models are proposed – combining directions from Dynamic Structure and Gradient models, and magnitudes from Smagorinsky and Vreman eddy-viscosity models. These models are expected to be better than eddy-viscosity and Modulated Gradient models, and this is confirmed by preliminary a posteriori tests.  相似文献

The effects of body force/external pressure gradient on the statistical behaviours of the reaction progress variable variance and the terms of its transport equation have been investigated for different turbulence intensities using DNS data of statistically planar flames. Since the extent of flame wrinkling increases with the strengthening of body force promoting unstable stratification, the scalar variance has been found to decrease under strong body force promoting stability. This trend is particularly strong for low turbulence intensities where the probability density function of the reaction progress variable cannot be approximated by a bimodal distribution. Therefore, an algebraic relation for the reaction progress variable variance, derived based on a presumed bimodal probability density function of reaction progress variable, cannot be used for general flow conditions. The contributions of chemical reaction and scalar dissipation rates in the scalar variance transport equation remain leading order source and sink, respectively for all cases irrespective of the strength and direction of the body force. The counter-gradient type transport is found to weaken with increasing body force magnitude when the body force is directed from the heavier unburned gas to the lighter burned gas side of the flame brush, and vice versa. Although a scalar dissipation rate-based reaction rate closure can be utilised to model the reaction rate contribution to the scalar variance transport accurately, the dissipation rate contribution due to the gradient of the Favre-averaged reaction progress variable cannot be ignored and it plays a key role for large magnitudes of body force promoting stable stratification. An algebraic closure of the scalar dissipation rate, originally proposed for high Damköhler number combustion, has been modified for the thin reaction zones regime combustion by incorporating the effects of Froude number. This model has been shown to predict the scalar dissipation rate accurately for all cases considered here.  相似文献

The unstrained and strained flamelet closures for filtered reaction rate in large eddy simulation (LES) of premixed flames are studied. The required sub-grid scale (SGS) PDF in these closures is presumed using the Beta function. The relative performances of these closures are assessed by comparing numerical results from large eddy simulations of piloted Bunsen flames of stoichiometric methane–air mixture with experimental measurements. The strained flamelets closure is observed to underestimate the burn rate and thus the reactive scalars mass fractions are under-predicted with an over-prediction of fuel mass fraction compared with the unstrained flamelet closure. The physical reasons for this relative behaviour are discussed. The results of unstrained flamelet closure compare well with experimental data. The SGS variance of the progress variable required for the presumed PDF is obtained by solving its transport equation. An order of magnitude analysis of this equation suggests that the commonly used algebraic model obtained by balancing source and sink in this transport equation does not hold. This algebraic model is shown to underestimate the SGS variance substantially and the implications of this variance model for the filtered reaction rate closures are highlighted.  相似文献

A necessary condition for the accurate prediction of turbulent flows using large-eddy simulation (LES) is the correct representation of energy transfer between the different scales of turbulence in the LES. For scalar turbulence, transfer of energy between turbulent length scales is described by a transport equation for the second moment of the scalar increment. For homogeneous isotropic turbulence, the underlying equation is the well-known Yaglom equation. In the present work, we study the turbulent mixing of a passive scalar with an imposed mean gradient by homogeneous isotropic turbulence. Both direct numerical simulations (DNS) and LES are performed for this configuration at various Schmidt numbers, ranging from 0.11 to 5.56. As the assumptions made in the derivation of the Yaglom equation are violated for the case considered here, a generalised Yaglom equation accounting for anisotropic effects, induced by the mean gradient, is derived in this work. This equation can be interpreted as a scale-by-scale energy-budget equation, as it relates at a certain scale r terms representing the production, turbulent transport, diffusive transport and dissipation of scalar energy. The equation is evaluated for the conducted DNS, followed by a discussion of physical effects present at different scales for various Schmidt numbers. For an analysis of the energy transfer in LES, a generalised Yaglom equation for the second moment of the filtered scalar increment is derived. In this equation, new terms appear due to the interaction between resolved and unresolved scales. In an a-priori test, this filtered energy-budget equation is evaluated by means of explicitly filtered DNS data. In addition, LES calculations of the same configuration are performed, and the energy budget as well as the different terms are thereby analysed in an a-posteriori test. It is shown that LES using an eddy viscosity model is able to fulfil the generalised filtered Yaglom equation for the present configuration. Further, the dependence of the terms appearing in the filtered energy-budget equation on varying Schmidt numbers is discussed.  相似文献

A posteriori analysis of the statistics of two large-eddy simulation (LES) solutions describing a piloted methane–air (Sandia D) flame is performed on a series of grids with progressively increased resolution reaching about 10.5 million cells. Chemical compositions, density and temperature fields are modelled with a steady flamelet approach and parametrised by the mixture fraction. The difference between the LES solutions arises from a different numerical treatment of the subgrid scale (SGS) mixture fraction variance – an important quantity of interest in non-premixed combustion modelling. In the first case (model I), the variance transport equation is solved directly, while in the second (model II), an equation for the square of the mixture fraction is solved, and the variance is computed from its definition. The comparison of the LES solutions is based on the convergence properties of their statistics with respect to the turbulence resolution length scale. The dependence of the LES statistics is analysed for velocity and the mixture fraction fields, and tested for convergence. For the most part, the statistics converge for the finest grids, but the variance of the mixture fraction shows some residual grid dependence in the high-gradient regions of the jet near field. The SGS variance given by model I exhibits realisability everywhere, whereas in regions of the flame model II is non-realisable, predicting negative variances. Furthermore, the LES statistics of model I exhibit superior convergence behaviour.  相似文献

In this work we use 3D direct numerical simulations (DNS) to investigate the average velocity conditioned on a conserved scalar in a double scalar mixing layer (DSML). The DSML is a canonical multistream flow designed as a model problem for the extensively studied piloted diffusion flames. The conditional mean velocity appears as an unclosed term in advanced Eulerian models of turbulent non-premixed combustion, like the conditional moment closure and transported probability density function (PDF) methods. Here it accounts for inhomogeneous effects that have been found significant in flames with relatively low Damköhler numbers. Today there are only a few simple models available for the conditional mean velocity and these are discussed with reference to the DNS results. We find that both the linear model of Kutznetzov and the Li and Bilger model are unsuitable for multi stream flows, whereas the gradient diffusion model of Pope shows very close agreement with DNS over the whole range of the DSML. The gradient diffusion model relies on a model for the conserved scalar PDF and here we have used a presumed mapping function PDF, that is known to give an excellent representation of the DNS. A new model for the conditional mean velocity is suggested by arguing that the Gaussian reference field represents the velocity field, a statement that is evidenced by a near perfect agreement with DNS. The model still suffers from an inconsistency with the unconditional flux of conserved scalar variance, though, and a strategy for developing fully consistent models is suggested.  相似文献

Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data on high pressure H2/O2 and H2/air flames using the compressible flow formulation, detailed kinetics, a real fluid equation of state, and generalised diffusion are analysed. The DNS is filtered over a range of filter widths to provide exact terms in the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) governing equations, including unclosed terms. The filtered pressure and the filtered heat flux vector are extensively compared with the pressure and the heat flux vector calculated as a function of the filtered primitive variables (i.e. the exact LES term is compared with its form available within an actual LES). The difference between these forms defines the subgrid pressure and the subgrid heat flux vector. The analyses are done both globally across the entire flame, as well as by conditionally averaging over specific regions of the flame; including regions of large subgrid kinetic energy, subgrid scalar dissipation, subgrid temperature variance, flame temperature, etc. In this work, although negligible for purely mixing cases, the gradient of the subgrid pressure is shown to be of the same order as, and larger than, the corresponding divergence of the turbulent subgrid stresses for reacting cases. This is despite the fact that all species behave essentially as ideal gases for this flame and holds true even when the ideal gas law is used to calculate the pressure. The ratio of the subgrid pressure gradient to the subgrid stress tensor divergence is shown to increase with increasing Reynolds number. Both the subgrid heat flux vector and its divergence are found to be substantially larger in reacting flows in comparison with mixing due to the associated larger temperature gradients. However, the divergence of the subgrid heat flux vector tends to be significantly smaller than other unclosed terms in the energy equation with decreasing significance with increasing Reynolds number.  相似文献

Large eddy simulation (LES) is used to investigate three-dimensional (3D) lean premixed turbulent methane–air flames in the thin-reaction-zone regime. In this regime, the Kolmogorov scale is smaller than the preheat zone thickness, but larger than the reaction zone thickness. Past numerical studies of similar flames were primarily direct numerical simulation either in two-dimensions or using the artificially thickened flame approach in 3D. For an LES the effect of small (unresolved) scales on the scalar field must be, modeled accurately to capture the correct flame structure. A subgrid combustion model based on the linear-eddy-mixing (LEM) model is used within an LES framework (called LEM–LES hereafter) to capture the 3D flame-structure of the highly stretched premixed flames. A finite-rate, one-step methane–air chemistry with a non-unity Lewis number formulation is used in this study. The simulated flame structure resembles flames experimentally studied in the thin-reaction-zone regime. Even though the preheat zone is broadened by the penetration of small eddies, the chemical reaction zone remains thin and localized. This feature is captured properly in the current LEM–LES approach. The flame structure and other statistics such as the flame area evolution, curvature, and strain-rate statistics computed using the LEM–LES are also in good agreement with the past DNS studies.  相似文献

We provide analytical and numerical results concerning multi-scale correlations between the resolved velocity field and the subgrid-scale (SGS) stress-tensor in large eddy simulations (LES). Following previous studies for Navier–Stokes equations, we derive the exact hierarchy of LES equations governing the spatio-temporal evolution of velocity structure functions of any order. The aim is to assess the influence of the subgrid model on the inertial range intermittency. We provide a series of predictions, within the multifractal theory, for the scaling of correlation involving the SGS stress and we compare them against numerical results from high-resolution Smagorinsky LES and from a-priori filtered data generated from direct numerical simulations (DNS). We find that LES data generally agree very well with filtered DNS results and with the multifractal prediction for all leading terms in the balance equations. Discrepancies are measured for some of the sub-leading terms involving cross-correlation between resolved velocity increments and the SGS tensor or the SGS energy transfer, suggesting that there must be room to improve the SGS modelisation to further extend the inertial range properties for any fixed LES resolution.  相似文献

The probabilty density function (PDF) of the mixture fraction is of integral importance to a large number of combustion models. Here, a novel modelling approach for the PDF of the mixture fraction is proposed which employs dissipation elements. While being restricted to the commonly used mean and variance of the mixture fraction, this model approach individually considers contributions of the laminar regions as well as the turbulent core and the turbulent/non-turbulent interface region. The later region poses a highly intermittent part of the flow which is of high relevance to the non-premixed combustion of pure hydrocarbon fuels. The model assumptions are justified by means of the gradient trajectory based analysis of high fidelity direct numerical simulation (DNS) datasets of two turbulent inert configurations and a turbulent non-premixed jet flame. The new dissipation element based model is validated against the DNS datasets and a comparison with the beta PDF is presented.  相似文献
