Vibration analysis of single-layered graphene sheets (SLGSs) is investigated using nonlocal continuum plate model. To this end, Eringens's nonlocal elasticity equations are incorporated into the classical Mindlin plate theory for vibrations of rectangular nanoplates. In contrast to the classical model, the nonlocal model developed in this study has the capability to evaluate the natural frequencies of the graphene sheets with considering the size-effects on the vibrational characteristics of them. Solutions for frequencies of the free vibration of simply-supported and clamped SLGSs are computed using generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) method. Then, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for the free vibration of various SLGSs with different values of side length and chirality are employed, the results of which are matched with the nonlocal model ones to derive the appropriate values of the nonlocal parameter relevant to each boundary condition. It is found that the value of the nonlocal parameter is independent of the magnitude of the geometrical variables of the system.  相似文献

This article presents analytical explicit frequency expressions for investigating the vibrations of single-layer graphene sheets (SLGSs). The interatomic potential is incorporated into a nonlocal continuum plate model through establishing a linkage between the strain energy density induced in the continuum and nonlocal plate constitutive relations. The model which is independent of scattered value of Young's modulus is then applied and explicit frequency formulas for the SLGSs with different edge conditions are derived using static deflection function of the nanoplate under uniformly distributed load. The reliability of the present formulation is verified by the results obtained by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and other research workers. The formulas are of a simple short form enabling quick and accurate evaluation of the frequency of the SLGSs and also simple calibration of scale coefficient by the use of MD simulations results.  相似文献

In this article, an atomistic model is developed to study the buckling and vibration characteristics of single-layered graphene sheets (SLGSs). By treating SLGSs as space-frame structures, in which the discrete nature of graphene sheets is preserved, they are modeled using three-dimensional elastic beam elements for the bonds. The elastic moduli of the beam elements are determined via a linkage between molecular mechanics and structural mechanics. Based on this model, the critical compressive forces and fundamental natural frequencies of single-layered graphene sheets with different boundary conditions and geometries are obtained and then compared. It is indicated that the compressive buckling force decreases when the graphene sheet aspect ratio increases. At low aspect ratios, the increase of aspect ratios will result in a significant decrease in the critical buckling load. It is also indicated that increasing aspect ratio at a given side length results in the convergence of buckling envelops associated with armchair and zigzag graphene sheets. The influence of boundary conditions will be studied for different geometries. It will be shown that the influence of boundary conditions is not significant for sufficiently large SLGSs.  相似文献

Higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) is reformulated using the nonlocal differential constitutive relations of Eringen. The equations of motion of the nonlocal theories are derived. The developed equations of motion have been applied to study buckling characteristics of nanoplates such as graphene sheets. Navier's approach has been used to solve the governing equations for all edges simply supported boundary conditions. Analytical solutions for critical buckling loads of the graphene sheets are presented. Nonlocal elasticity theories are employed to bring out the small scale effect on the critical buckling load of graphene sheets. Effects of (i) nonlocal parameter, (ii) length, (iii) thickness of the graphene sheets and (iv) higher order shear deformation theory on the critical buckling load have been investigated. The theoretical development as well as numerical solutions presented herein should serve as reference for nonlocal theories as applied to the stability analysis of nanoplates and nanoshells.  相似文献

This paper investigates the nonlinear bending behavior of a single-layer rectangular graphene sheet subjected to a transverse uniform load in thermal environments. The single-layer graphene sheet (SLGS) is modeled as a nonlocal orthotropic plate which contains small scale effect. Geometric nonlinearity in the von Kármán sense is adopted. The thermal effects are included and the material properties are assumed to be size dependent and temperature dependent, and are obtained from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The small scale parameter e 0 a is estimated by matching the deflections of graphene sheets observed from the MD simulation results with the numerical results obtained from the nonlocal plate model. The numerical results show that the temperature change as well as the aspect ratio has a significant effect on the nonlinear bending behavior of SLGSs. The results reveal that the small scale parameter reduces the static large deflections of SLGSs, and the small scale effect also plays an important role in the nonlinear bending of SLGSs.  相似文献

We present the application of differential quadrature(DQ) method for the buckling analysis of nanobeams with exponentially varying stiffness based on four different beam theories of Euler-Bernoulli, Timoshenko, Reddy, and Levison. The formulation is based on the nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen. New results are presented for the guided and simply supported guided boundary conditions. Numerical results are obtained to investigate the effects of the nonlocal parameter,length-to-height ratio, boundary condition, and nonuniform parameter on the critical buckling load parameter. It is observed that the critical buckling load decreases with increase in the nonlocal parameter while the critical buckling load parameter increases with increase in the length-to-height ratio.  相似文献

This Letter considers the axial instability of double-nanobeam-systems. Eringen's nonlocal elasticity is utilized for modelling the double-nanobeam-systems. The nonlocal theory accounts for the small-scale effects arising at the nanoscale. The small-scale effects substantially influence the instability (or buckling) of double-nanobeam-systems. Results reveal that the small-scale effects are higher with increasing values of nonlocal parameter for the case of in-phase (synchronous) buckling modes than the out-of-phase (asynchronous) buckling modes. The increase of the stiffness of the coupling elastic medium in double-nanobeam-system reduces the small-scale effects during the out-of-phase (asynchronous) buckling modes. Analysis of the scale effects in higher buckling loads of double-nanobeam-system with synchronous and asynchronous modes is also discussed in this Letter. The theoretical development presented herein may serve as a reference for nonlocal theories as applied to the instability analysis of complex-nanobeam-system such as complex carbon nanotube system.  相似文献

The size-dependent static buckling responses of circular, elliptical and skew nanoplates made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are investigated in this article based on an isogeometric model. The Eringen nonlocal continuum theory is implemented to capture nonlocal effects. According to the Gurtin–Murdoch surface elasticity theory, surface energy influences are also taken into account by the consideration of two thin surface layers at the top and bottom of nanoplate. The material properties vary in the thickness direction and are evaluated using the Mori–Tanaka homogenization scheme. The governing equations of buckled nanoplate are achieved by the minimum total potential energy principle. To perform the isogeometric analysis as a solution methodology, a novel matrix-vector form of formulation is presented. Numerical examples are given to study the effects of surface stress as well as other important parameters on the critical buckling loads of functionally graded nanoplates. It is found that the buckling configuration of nanoplates at small scales is significantly affected by the surface free energy.  相似文献

In the present work, thermal buckling of single-layered graphene sheets lying on an elastic medium is analyzed. For this purpose, the sinusoidal shear deformation plate theory in tandem with the nonlocal continuum theory, which takes the small scale effects into account, is employed. The non-linear stability equations, which contain the reaction of Winkler–Pasternak elastic substrate medium, are derived and then solved analytically for a plate with various boundary conditions and based on various plate theories. Closed form solutions are formulated for three types of thermal loadings as uniform, linear and nonlinear temperature rise through the thickness of the plate. A number of examples are presented to illustrate the numerical results concerned with the buckling temperature response of nanoplates resting on two-parameter elastic foundations. The influences played by transversal shear deformation, plate aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio, nonlocal parameter, and elastic foundation parameters are all investigated.  相似文献

In this article, the buckling behavior of nanoscale circular plates under uniform radial compression is studied. Small-scale effect is taken into consideration. Using nonlocal elasticity theory the governing equations are derived for the circular single-layered graphene sheets (SLGS). Explicit expressions for the buckling loads are obtained for clamped and simply supported boundary conditions. It is shown that nonlocal effects play an important role in the buckling of circular nanoplates. The effects of the small scale on the buckling loads considering various parameters such as the radius of the plate and mode numbers are investigated.  相似文献

A nonlocal multiple-shell model is developed for the elastic buckling of multi-walled carbon nanotubes under uniform external radial pressure on the basis of theory of nonlocal elasticity. The effect of small length scale is incorporated in the formulation. An explicit expression is derived for the critical buckling pressure for a double-walled carbon nanotube. The influence of the small length scale on the buckling pressure is examined. It is concluded that the critical buckling pressure for a carbon nanotube could be overestimated by the classic (local) shell model due to ignoring the effect of small length scale.  相似文献

Eringen's nonlocality is incorporated into the shell theory to include the small-scale effects on the axial buckling of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with arbitrary boundary conditions. To this end, the Rayleigh-Ritz solution technique is implemented in conjunction with the set of beam functions as modal displacement functions. Then, molecular dynamics simulations are employed to obtain the critical buckling loads of armchair and zigzag SWCNTs, the results of which are matched with those of nonlocal shell model to extract the appropriate values of nonlocal parameter. It is found that in contrast to the chirality, boundary conditions have a considerable influence on the proper values of nonlocal parameter.  相似文献

Stress concentration factor concept has been developed for single-layered graphene sheets (SLGSs) with circular holes through an atomistic point of view by the application of molecular structural mechanics (MSM) approach. In this approach the response of SLGSs against unidirectional tensile loading is matched to the response of a frame-like macro structure containing beam elements by making an equivalence between strain energies of beam elements in MSM and potential energies of chemical bonds of SLGSs. Both chirality and size effects are considered and the atomistic evaluation of stress concentration factor is performed for different sizes of circular holes. Also, molecular dynamics simulations are implemented to verify the existence and location of the predicted stress concentration. The results reveal that size effects and the diameters of circular holes have a significant influence on the stress concentration factor of SLGSs and armchair SLGSs show a larger value of stress concentration than zigzag ones.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to describe the axial buckling behavior of chiral single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) using a combined continuum-atomistic approach. To this end, the nonlocal Flugge shell theory is implemented into which the nonlocal elasticity of Eringen incorporated. Molecular mechanics is used in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) to precisely extract the effective in-plane and bending stiffnesses and Poisson's ratio used in the developed nonlocal Flugge shell model. The Rayleigh-Ritz procedure is employed to analytically solve the problem in the context of calculus of variation. The results generated from the present hybrid model are compared with those from molecular dynamics simulations as a benchmark of good accuracy and excellent agreement is achieved. The influences of small scale factor, commonly used boundary conditions and chirality on the critical buckling load are fully explored. It is indicated that the importance of the small length scale is affected by the type of boundary conditions considered.  相似文献

In this Letter, the buckling and vibration behavior of nonlocal nanowires by incorporating surface elasticity is investigated. A modified core–shell model is developed to depict the size effect of Youngʼs modulus and validated by the reported experimental data. Our results show that the buckling load and natural frequency of nanowires increase when the effect of surface layer thickness is taken into account. Moreover, as the diameter of nanowires is smaller than 50 nm, the influence of surface layer thickness becomes obvious. This work can be helpful in characterizing and predicting the buckling and vibration behavior of NWs.  相似文献

This study presents an analytical approach for buckling analysis and smart control of a single layer graphene sheet (SLGS) using a coupled polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanoplate. The SLGS and PVDF nanoplate are considered to be coupled by an enclosing elastic medium which is simulated by the Pasternak foundation. The PVDF nanoplate is subjected to an applied voltage in the thickness direction which operates in control of critical load of the SLGS. In order to satisfy the Maxwell equation, electric potential distribution is assumed as a combination of a half-cosine and linear variation. The exact analysis is performed for the case when all four ends are simply supported and free electrical boundary condition. Adopting the nonlocal Mindlin plate theory, the governing equations are derived based on the energy method and Hamilton's principle. A detailed parametric study is conducted to elucidate the influences of the small scale coefficient, stiffness of the internal elastic medium, graphene length, mode number and external electric voltage on the buckling smart control of the SLGS. The results depict that the imposed external voltage is an effective controlling parameter for buckling of the SLGS. This study might be useful for the design and smart control of nano-devices.  相似文献

In the present investigation, the axial buckling and post-buckling configurations of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are studied including the thermal environment effect. For this purpose, Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity continuum theory is implemented into the classical Euler–Bernoulli beam theory to represent the SWCNTs as a nonlocal elastic beam model. A closed-form analytical solution is carried out to analyze the static response of SWCNTs in their post-buckling state in which the axial buckling load is assumed to be beyond the critical axial buckling load. Common sets of boundary conditions, named simply supported–simply supported (SS–SS), clamped–clamped (C–C), and clamped–simply supported (C–SS), are considered in the investigation. Selected numerical results are given to represent the variation of the carbon nanotube’s mid-span deflection with the applied axial load corresponding to various nonlocal parameters, length-to-diameter aspect ratios, temperature changes, and end supports. Moreover, a comparison between the post-buckling behaviors of SWCNTs at low- and high-temperature environments is presented. It is found that the size effect leads to a decrease of the axial buckling load especially for SWCNTs with C–C boundary conditions. Also, it is revealed that the value of the temperature change plays different roles in the post-buckling response of SWCNTs at low- and high-temperature environments.  相似文献

In this paper, the effects of two main types of structural defects, i.e. Stone–Wales and single vacancy, on the mechanical properties of single-layered graphene sheets (SLGSs) are investigated. To this end, molecular dynamics simulations based on the Tersoff–Brenner potential function and Nose–Hoover thermostat technique are implemented. The results obtained have revealed that the presence of defects significantly reduces the failure strain and the intrinsic strength of SLGSs, while it has a slight effect on Young’s modulus. Furthermore, the examination of loading in both armchair and zigzag directions demonstrated that SLGSs are slightly stronger in the armchair direction and defects have lower effect in this direction. Considering the fracture mechanism, the failure process of defective and perfect graphene sheets is also presented.  相似文献

An investigation is reported of the thermal buckling and postbuckling of axially compressed double-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) subjected to a uniform temperature rise. The double-walled carbon nanotube is modeled as a nonlocal shear deformable cylindrical shell, which contains small-scale effects and van der Waals interaction forces. The governing equations are based on higher order shear deformation shell theory with a von Kármán–Donnell-type of kinematic nonlinearity and include thermal effects. Temperature-dependent material properties, which come from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and an initial point defect, which is simulated as a dimple on the tube wall, are both taken into account. The small-scale parameter, e 0 a, is estimated by matching the buckling temperature of CNTs observed from the MD simulation results with the numerical results obtained from the nonlocal shear deformable shell model. The numerical illustrations concern the thermal postbuckling response of perfect and imperfect, single- and double-walled CNTs with different values of compressive load ratio. The results show that buckling temperature and postbuckling behavior of nanotubes are very sensitive to the small-scale parameter. The results reveal that temperature-dependent material properties have a significant effect on the thermal postbuckling behavior of both single- and double-walled CNTs.  相似文献
