The generation of short light pulses (1 ns) in single mode fibers under pumping by wide laser pulses (of a microsecond duration) due to the backward stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is numerically investigated. The influence of the acoustic diffraction is taken into account. The cases of acoustic waveguide and anti-waveguide fibers are considered. For an acoustic anti-waveguide fiber, a dependence of overlap integral S on the acoustic mode number n has a sharp peak in the region of n 100. Computer simulations have demonstrated the energy conversion of the pump wave into short pulses of the signal (Stokes) wave in the case of synchronous pumping. The optimal length of the fiber should be approximately equal to the half-length of the pump pulse. The bypass time of the Stokes pulse of the optimal circuit fiber and the feedback loop must be equal to the repetition period of the pump pulse. An importance of acoustic mode structure of the fiber for the process of forming pulse train in shown. We have found that the acoustic anti-waveguide fibers with a small core (a < 3 m) can be preferable for obtaining the stable train of compressed pulses.  相似文献

In addition to deep-water rogue waves which develop from the modulation instability of an optical CW, wave propagation in optical fibers may also produce shallow water rogue waves. These extreme wave events are generated in the modulationally stable normal dispersion regime. A suitable phase or frequency modulation of a CW laser leads to chirp-free and flat-top pulses or flaticons which exhibit a stable self-similar evolution. Upon collision, flaticons at different carrier frequencies, which may also occur in wavelength division multiplexed transmission systems, merge into a single, high-intensity, temporally and spatially localized rogue pulse.  相似文献

We report efficient cascaded Raman scattering of near-IR nanosecond pulses in large-core (65 μm diameter) As?S? and As?Se? optical fibers. Raman scattering dominates other spectral broadening mechanisms, such as four-wave mixing, modulation instability, and soliton dynamics, because the fibers have large normal group-velocity dispersion in the spectral range of interest. With ~2 ns pump pulses at a wavelength of 1.9 μm, four Stokes peaks, all with peak powers greater than 1 kW, have been measured.  相似文献

We show that the output Stoke pulse from a continuously (CW) pumped stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) amplifier is the sum of the transmitted input Stokes pulse, which propagates undistorted through the medium without amplification and additional delay, and of a Stokes shifted pump signal reflected by the electrostrictively induced acoustic wave, which contributes to the Stokes output signal with a delay determined by the time required for build up of the acoustic wave.  相似文献

In terms of Darboux transformation, we have exactly solved the higher-order nonlinear Schrdinger equation that describes the propagation of ultrashort optical pulses in optical fibers. We discuss the modulation instability(MI) process in detail and find that the higher-order term has no effect on the MI condition. Under different conditions, we obtain Kuznetsov–Ma soliton and Akhmediev breather solutions of higher-order nonlinear Schrdinger equation. The former describes the propagation of a bright pulse on a continuous wave background in the presence of higher-order effects and the soliton's peak position is shifted owing to the presence of a nonvanishing background, while the latter implies the modulation instability process that can be used in practice to produce a train of ultrashort optical soliton pulses.  相似文献

New mechanisms of generation of acoustic and electromagnetic soliton-like pulses in an optoelastic medium upon nonlinear nonresonant interaction of the polarization components of an electromagnetic field with acoustic oscillations in the medium are considered. It is shown that the acousto-electromagnetic interaction in such a system may lead to the formation of coherent soliton excitations in a thin crystal plate. It is found that a modulation instability occurs in an extended medium, which is caused by the spatial effects and leads to the generation of transverse sound waves. The evolution of a light field in a one-dimensional extended periodic optoelastic medium is also considered. It is shown that acoustic and electromagnetic solitons can be generated due to the mixing of direct and backward optical waves and their nonresonant interaction with a sound wave.  相似文献

We present the investigation of the ON-OFF contrast in an optical switch using stimulated Raman Scattering in optical fibers. The setup consists of a Raman circuit of two fiber stages connected in series with a spectral filter rejecting the signal inserted between them. The stage 1 works as saturated amplifier, in this stage the pump pulses are saturated when pump and signal are launched to the input or travel through the fiber without saturation when pump only is launched at the input. The stage 2 works as a Raman amplifier with amplification depending on the pump power entering from the first stage. When pump only is launched at the input enter to the second stage without saturation and amplifies the signal entering this stage, strong signal pulses appear at the output; when pump and signal are launched to the input the pump is saturated in the first stage and the filter rejected the amplified signal, so that only low power pump enters the second stage and no signal pulses appear at the output. We use 2 ns pump pulses at 1528 nm and continuous-wave signal at 1620 nm. In the first stage of Raman circuit, we use both fibers with normal and anomalous dispersion. In fibers with anomalous dispersion, pump saturation is affected by modulation instability. We find that the contrast may be improved using fibers with normal and anomalous dispersion connected in series in the first stage, provided there is appropriate selection of their lengths. The best achieved contrast was 15 dB at 6 W pump peak power.  相似文献

In this paper,we investigate the modulation instability for generating femtosecond pulses in fibres with slowly decreasing dispersion.Higher-order dispersion and higher-order nonlinear effects are taken into account when the continuous wave or quasi-continuous wave evolves into sub-picosecond and femtosecond pulses by modulation instability in the optical fibres.Our research results show that the gain spectrum of the dispersion-decreasing fibres is much wider than that in conventional fibres.The third-order dispersion effect has no contribution to gain spectrum,while the self-steepening effect reduces the maximum value and gain bandwidth,and the Raman self-scattering effect widens the extent to which the modulation instability occurs.  相似文献

Supercontinuum (SC) growth in highly nonlinear fibers is compared for cw pumping in the anomalous- and normal-dispersion regimes. For anomalous-dispersion pumping, the combined effects of modulation instability (MI) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) contribute to spectral broadening. Furthermore, breakup of the cw light into ultrashort pulses by MI leads to the formation of a Raman pulse that evolves into a soliton, as evidenced by the observation of soliton self-frequency shift. Blueshifted, nonsolitonic radiation associated with the fission of higher-order solitons is also present in the SC spectra. For normal-dispersion pumping, SRS seeds the SC growth by generating several cascaded Stokes orders. When the Stokes orders are shifted into the anomalous-dispersion regime at higher launch powers, MI again causes soliton formation. Broadband continua are generated when the laser is positioned as far away as 191 nm from the zero-dispersion wavelength in normal dispersion.  相似文献

研究了色散缓变光纤中调制不稳定效应,得到了增益谱与光纤纵向色散参量的一般关系式.结果表明,色散缓变光纤较常规光纤具有较宽的增益谱.选取色散级变光纤的色散参量可以获得较大的增益带宽.数值模拟显示,利用色散缓变光纤中的调制不稳定性可以产生高重复率的基本孤子脉冲串.  相似文献

Acoustic wave interaction with non-bonded contacts was found to be inherently non-linear due to asymmetrical stiffness distribution across the interface. A diode-type non-linearity results in local static elastic fields inside the contact, which are shown to be a source of transient longitudinal and shear DC-acoustic pulses polarized oppositely to a biasing contact stress. A parametric modulation of contact stiffness leads to acoustic instability effects, multiple sub-harmonics, and amplitude "self-modulation", and provides chaotic noise-like non-linear acoustic excitations in solids. For realistic cracked flaws, contact acoustic non-linearity exhibits amplitude hysteresis and storage caused by acoustic wave impact on the defect. Maximum storage time observed comes to several hours for read-in time less than half a minute. A long-term non-linear memory is believed to be due to a slow relaxation of thermally induced micro-strain within the crack area.  相似文献

We investigate the generation mechanisms for ultra-wide spectra in nonlinear optical fibers. Soliton fission and modulation instability represent fundamental mechanisms for the generation process. The primary origin of the spectral broadening changes with the pump-pulse duration. Soliton fission dominates for low input power and short pulses. Its efficiency for supercontinuum generation and especially the extension to the blue side can be increased by proper design of the dispersion profile. The modulation instability has a strong impact for high input powers and greatly enhances the generation process, but leads to a degradation of the coherence properties. Also for short pulses with durations of 60 fs the modulation instability is present and can hardly be suppressed. The interplay between these two effects leads to various characteristics of the resulting spectra, which are modified by the relative impact of the modulation instability. We use the Stokes photon of a biphoton pair to set the time origin for electro-optic modulation of the wave function of the anti-Stokes photon thereby allowing arbitrary phase and amplitude modulation. The nonlinear baseband electromagnetic pulses of a wide spectrum that lies in terahertz (THz) range are investigated theoretically in the paraelectric crystals like SrTiO3 at the temperatures ~ 77 K. The frequency dispersion is important in THz range there. The dominating nonlinearity of the crystal is cubic. The frequency dispersion and nonlinearity correspond to existence of envelope solitons and the modulation instability of long input envelope pulses, whereas in the transverse direction the modulation instability is absent. When the nonlinear wave is uniform in the transverse direction, the existence of soliton-like baseband pulses without a carrier frequency has been demonstrated. There exists a possibility to generate the regular sequences of short baseband pulses due to the nonlinearity in the paraelectric crystals. The nonlinear focusing of input long baseband pulses by the exciting antenna results in the formation of extremely short baseband pulses localized both in the longitudinal and transverse directions.  相似文献

Collinear acousto-optic diffraction of arbitrarily polarized light is studied. It is shown that in the general case, the diffraction spectrum at the output of an acousto-optic cell contains four components, which have different frequencies and polarizations. Beats of these components lead to modulation of the intensity of light transmitted through the output analyzer. The amplitudes of the transmitted light components are analyzed as functions of the frequency and power of the acoustic wave for different polarizer and analyzer orientations. 本文报道色散缓变光纤中调制不稳定性效应研究.从非线性Schrodinger方程出发,获得了增益谱与纵向色散变化参量和光纤传输距离的一般关系.研究发现,色散缓变光纤中调制不稳定性的增益谱较常规光纤中的宽得多.调节光纤色散纵向变化参量,可以得到较宽的增益谱.该文的研究结果为光纤中利用调制不稳定性产生超短孤子脉冲提供了理论根据.  相似文献

This paper pursues the study of compression-tension acoustic pulses generated by nanosecond electron beams in a solid. In previous works, where the behavior of the acoustic pulses in the near wave zone is analyzed, the pulse shape is defined by the absorbed beam energy distribution. In this work, the evolution of acoustic pulses traveling large distances in thick samples and experiencing multiple reflections in thin samples is studied for the first time. It is demonstrated that diffraction is the basic factor governing the pulse shape.  相似文献

利用激光脉冲在光纤中传播时所遵守的相干非线性薛定谔耦合方程,研究了保偏光纤中两相近频率的线偏振光,其偏振方向相互正交且平行于光纤的双折射轴,且偏振方向沿两个双折射轴的分量强度相等时,在同为反常色散区和正常色散区所产生的调制不稳定性.结果表明在反常色散区和正常色散区都能产生调制不稳定性;在正常色散区存在不同的调制不稳定性功率区域,对应不同的功率区域,导致增益谱表现出明显的不同,并且当输入功率一定时,波长差(或频率差)的变化导致增益谱的变化. 关键词: 相近频率传输区域 双折射 保偏光纤 调制不稳定性  相似文献

The perturbed nonlinear Schrodinger equation (PNLSE) describes the pulse propagation in optical fibers, which results from the interaction of the higher-order dispersion effect, self-steepening (SS) and self-phase modulation (SPM). The challenge between these aforementioned phenomena may lead to a dominant one among them. It is worth noticing that the study of modulation instability (MI) leads to the inspection of dominant phenomena (DPh). Indeed, the MI triggers when the coefficient of DPh exceeds a critical value and it may occur that the interaction leads to wave compression. The PNLSE is currently studied in the literature, mainly on finding traveling wave solutions. Here, we are concerned with analyzing the similarity solutions of the PNLSE. The exact solutions are obtained via introducing similarity transformations and by using the extended unified method. The solutions are evaluated numerically and they are shown graphically. It is observed that the intensity of the pulses exhibits self steepening which progresses to shock soliton in ultra-short time (or near t = 0). Also, it is found that the real part of the solution exhibits self-phase modulation in time. The study of (MI) determines the critical value for the coefficients of SS, SPM, or high dispersivity to occur.  相似文献
