The periodic instanton method is used to study the decay rates of metastable ground state and excited states of the cubic potential. The imaginary part of the energy is calculated through the standard procedure in the path-integral scheme. A formula of the decay rate valid for the entire region of energy is obtained. This formula provides a linkage between classical thermal activation at high temperatures and purely quantum tunneling at zero temperature. It is shown that in the low energy limit this more general result reduces exactly to the vacuum result. The temperature dependence of the decay rate agrees with earlier works in the literature.  相似文献

The quantum interference effects induced by the Wess-Zumino term, or Berry phase are studied theoretically in resonant quantum coherence of the magnetization vector between degenerate states in nanometer-scale single-domain ferromagnets in the absence of an external magnetic field. We consider the magnetocrystalline anisotropy with trigonal, tetragonal and hexagonal crystal symmetry, respectively. By applying the periodic instanton method in the spin-coherent-state path integral, we evaluate the low-lying tunnel splittings between degenerate excited states of neighboring wells. And the low-lying energy level spectrum of mth excited state are obtained with the help of the Bloch theorem in one-dimensional periodic potential. The energy level spectrum and the thermodynamic properties of magnetic tunneling states are found to depend significantly on the total spins of ferromagnets at sufficiently low temperatures. The energy band structure of spin-1 condensates with repulsive spin-independent and either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic spin-dependent interactions in one-dimensional (1D) periodic optical lattices is discussed. Within the two-mode approximation, Bloch bands of spin-1 condensates are presented. The results show that the Bloch bands exhibit a complex structure as the atom density of m F=0 hyperfine state increases: bands splitting, reversion, intersection and loop structure are excited subsequently. The complex band structure should be related to the tunneling and spin-mixing dynamics.  相似文献

The low-energy-level macroscopic wave functions of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a symmetric double-well and a periodic potential are obtained by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically. The ground state tunnel splitting is evaluated in terms of the even and odd wave functions corresponding to the global ground and excited states respectively. We show that the numerical result is in good agreement with the analytic level splitting obtained by means of the periodic instanton method.  相似文献

It is shown that the problem of instantons in ferromagnetic materials in a large-spin model is reduced to an exactly integrable dynamical system with a finite number of variables. For a rather wide class of models, there exists a continuum of instanton paths that form a one-parameter family of paths with essentially different shapes but with the same value of the Euclidean action. On the basis of the formalism developed, exact instanton solutions are constructed that describe macroscopic quantum tunneling for a small ferromagnetic particle with uniaxial or biaxial quadratic anisotropy in the presence of a magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the easy axis. These solutions are valid for any relations between the anisotropy parameters and for any magnitude of the magnetic field and its direction in the base plane. Based on the solutions obtained, the principles of macroscopic quantum tunneling in high-spin-molecule-type magnetic particles are described. Tunneling regimes of two types are obtained: (1) regimes that are characterized by destructive interference of instanton trajectories and oscillatory dependence of the transition probability on the magnitude of the magnetic field and (2) regimes in which all instantons have the same purely real value of the Euclidean action and there is no destructive interference.  相似文献

The paper addresses inelastic spin-flip tunneling accompanied by surface spin excitations (magnons) in ferromagnetic junctions. The inelastic tunneling current is proportional to the magnon density of states which is energy-independent for the surface waves and, for this reason, cannot account for the bias-voltage dependence of the observed inelastic tunneling spectra. This paper shows that the bias-voltage dependence of the tunneling spectra can arise from the tunneling matrix elements of the electron-magnon interaction. These matrix elements are derived from the Coulomb exchange interaction using the itinerant-electron model of magnon-assisted tunneling. The results for the inelastic tunneling spectra, based on the nonequilibrium Green’s function calculations, are presented for both parallel and antiparallel magnetizations in the ferromagnetic leads.  相似文献

The coherent quantum tunneling effects in antiferromagnets in the presence of a strong external magnetic field parallel to the easy axis have been investigated using the instanton formalism. In a wide field range including the region of the phase spin-flop transition, the tunneling is described by 180° instantons for which the Euclidean action is real and destructive interference is absent. At the transition point, 90° instantons describing the tunneling between the collinear and spin-flop states appear. The Euclidean action decreases, whereas the tunneling probability and tunneling level splitting in both phases increase significantly in the immediate vicinity of the spin-flop transition point. The possibility of observing the coherent tunneling effects for artificial small particles (magnetic dots) made of antiferromagnets is discussed.  相似文献

The nature of the repulsive Coulomb barrier in isolated molecular polyanions is studied by means of the photodetachment dynamics of the S(1) excited state of the fluorescein dianion which is bound solely by the repulsive Coulomb barrier. Photoelectron spectra reveal a feature at a constant electron kinetic energy, regardless of the excitation energy. This is explained by using an adiabatic tunneling picture for electron loss through successive repulsive Coulomb barriers correlating to vibrationally excited states. This physical picture is supported by time-resolved photoelectron spectra, showing that the tunneling lifetime is also invariant with excitation energy.  相似文献

Single-particle sequential tunneling is studied through a negative-U center hybridized with a superconducting, a ferromagnetic, and a normal metal electrodes. In stark contrast to the case of positive U, the single-particle tunneling in attractive charging energy is usually prohibited by ground states with electrons in pairs. We find a microscopic mechanism to induce single-particle sates from pair states. As a consequence, in the nonpolarized metal terminal a remarkable pure spin current with no charge currents survives over a wide range of gate- and bias- voltages, which is rather crucial for experimental observation and design of spintronic devices. In addition, a significant spin-filter effect is presented in certain bias regime.  相似文献

The tunneling splitting of the energy levels of a ferromagnetic particle in the presence of an applied magnetic field - previously derived only for the ground state with the path integral method — is obtained in a simple way from Schrödinger theory. The origin of the factors entering the result is clearly understood, in particular the effect of the asymmetry of the barriers of the potential. We have studied the dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensate by solving numerically the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. We examined the periodic behaviour of the condensate in a shifted harmonic potential, and further demonstrated the tunneling effect of a condensate through a Gaussian energy barrier, which is inserted after the condensate has been excited by shifting the harmonic trapping potential to a side. Moreover, it is shown that the initial condensate evolves dynamically into two separate moving condensates after the tunneling time under certain conditions.  相似文献

Combined ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling/atomic-force microscopy (STM/AFM) has been implemented for the first time for the tunneling spectroscopy of the size-quantized states in the InAs/GaAs(001) surface quantum dots (QDs). The ground states of the ultracold spin-1 atoms trapped in a deep one-dimensional double-well optical superlattice in a weak magnetic field are obtained. It is shown that the ground-state diagrams of the reduced double- well model are remarkably different for the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic condensates. The transition between the singlet state and nematic state is observed for the antiferromagnetic interaction atoms, which can be realized by modulating the tunneling parameter or the quadratic Zeeman energy. An experiment to distinguish the different spin states is suggested.  相似文献

We present the calculation and comparison of tunnel splitting at excited levels of biaxial spin models by various methods, including the generalized instanton method, the generalized path integral method for coherent spin states, the perturbation method, and the exact method by numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. It is found that, for integer spin with spin number around 10, tunnel splitting predicted by the generalized path integral for coherent spin states is about 10^{-n} times of the exact numerical result for the nth excited level, while the ratio of the results of the perturbation method and the exact numerical method diverges in the large spin limit. We thus conclude that the generalized instanton method is the best approximate way for calculating tunnel splitting in spin models.  相似文献

We investigate, in one spatial dimension, the quantum mechanical tunneling of an exciton incident upon a heterostructure barrier. We model the relative motion eigenstates of the exciton using a form of the one-dimensional hydrogen atom which avoids difficulties previously associated with 1D hydrogenic states. We obtain probabilities of reflection and transmission using the method of variable transmission and reflection amplitudes. Our calculations may be broadly divided into two sets. In the first set, we consider general qualitative aspects of exciton tunneling, such as the effect of different effective masses for electrons and holes and a relative difference in electron and hole barrier strengths. The second set models the tunneling of an exciton in a GaAs/Al(x)Ga(1-x)As heterostructure. In these calculations we find that, for energies such that the two lowest exciton states are coupled, the probability spectrum for transition from the ground state to the first excited state is identical to that for transition from the first excited state to the ground state. In addition, narrow peaks in the probability spectrum for transition are observed across this energy range for low dopant concentration x. Other interesting phenomena correlated with these peaks in the transition probability are reported.  相似文献
