The reactive vacuum deposition of CeO2 on Cu(1 1 1) surface in oxygen atmosphere provides high quality epitaxial ceria overlayers. We report the growth characteristics of Ce oxide, the structures, and the temperature stability of the oxide phases as investigated by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We find that Ce oxide on the Cu(1 1 1) grows initially in the form of islands giving sharp hexagonal LEED pattern of the CeO2(1 1 1) structure corresponding to the (1.5 × 1.5) structure. The CeO2-Cu(1 1 1) films exhibited mixed valence states and temperature dependent CeO2-Ce2O3 transition above 900 K due to the vacuum annealing. The transition progressed more rapidly at the surface, probably by formation of oxygen vacancies.  相似文献

The effects of different oxygen species and vacancies on the adsorption and oxidation of formaldehyde over CeO2(1 1 1) surface were systematically investigated by using density functional theory (DFT) method. On the stoichiometric CeO2(1 1 1) surface, the C-H bond rupture barriers of chemisorbed formaldehyde are much higher than that of formaldehyde desorption. On the reduced CeO2(1 1 1) surface, the energy barriers of C-H bond ruptures are less than those on the stoichiometric CeO2(1 1 1) surface. If the C-H bond rupture occurs, CO and H2 form quickly with low energy barriers. When O2 adsorbs on the reduced (1 1 1) surface (O2/Ov species), the C-H bond rupture barriers of formaldehyde are greatly reduced in comparison with those on the stoichiometric CeO2(1 1 1) surface. If O2 adsorbs on oxygen vacancy at sub-layer surface, its oxidative roles on formaldehyde are much similar to that of O2/Ov species.  相似文献

Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) has been used to investigate the adsorption of CO on CeO2−x-supported Pd nanoparticles at room temperature. The results show that when CeO2−x is initially grown on Pt(1 1 1), a small proportion of the surface remains as bare Pt sites. However, when Pd is deposited onto CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1), most of the Pd grows directly on top of the CeO2−x(1 1 1). RAIR spectra of CO adsorption on 1 ML Pd/CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1) show a broad CO-Pd band, which is inconsistent with a single crystal Pd surface. However, the 5 ML and 10 ML Pd/CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1) spectra show vibrational bands consistent with the presence of Pd(1 1 1) and (1 0 0) faces, suggesting the growth of Pd nanostructures with well defined facets.  相似文献

Classical molecular dynamics simulation with embedded atom method potential had been performed to investigate the surface structure and solidification morphology of aluminum nanoclusters Aln (n=256, 604, 1220 and 2048). It is found that Al cluster surfaces are comprised of (1 1 1) and (0 0 1) crystal planes. (1 1 0) crystal plane is not found on Al cluster surfaces in our simulation. On the surfaces of smaller Al clusters (n=256 and 604), (1 1 1) crystal planes are dominant. On larger Al clusters (n=1220 and 2048), (1 1 1) planes are still dominant but (0 0 1) planes cannot be neglected. Atomic density on cluster (1 1 1)/(0 0 1) surface is smaller/larger than the corresponding value on bulk surface. Computational analysis on total surface area and surface energies indicates that the total surface energy of an ideal Al nanocluster has the minimum value when (0 0 1) planes occupy 25% of the total surface area. We predict that a melted Al cluster will be a truncated octahedron after equilibrium solidification.  相似文献

Nanostructured titanium dioxide (ns-TiO2) films were grown by supersonic cluster beam deposition method. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that films are mainly composed by TiO2 nanocrystals embedded in an amorphous TiO2 phase while their electronic structure was studied by photoemission spectroscopy. The cluster assembled ns-TiO2 films are expected to exhibit several structural and chemical defects owing to the large surface to volume ratio of the deposited clusters. Ultraviolet photoemission spectra (hv = 50 eV) from the valence band unveil the presence of a restrained amount of surface Ti 3d defect states in the band gap, whereas Ti 2p core level X-ray photoelectron (hv = 630 eV) spectra do not manifestly disclose these defects.  相似文献

A well-defined CeOx/Pt(1 1 1) model catalytic system has been fabricated using the self-assembling of Ce adatoms on a Pt(1 1 1) surface with a subsequent oxidation of the nucleating Ce submonolayer (0.3 ML). The resulting system of the “inverse supported catalyst” type consists of CeOx nanoformations (2D islands of 5-15 nm size and ∼0.3 nm in height) more or less uniformly distributed over the Pt(1 1 1) surface. This CeOx/Pt(1 1 1) system has been tested in the CO oxidation reaction where both the CO2 production rate and the Ce oxidation state were monitored in situ. An enhanced reactivity and a remarkable shift of the bistable region of the reaction towards higher CO pressures were observed when compared to a clean Pt(1 1 1) surface. The CeOx islands exhibit a pronounced redox behaviour that follows the hysteresis cycle of the reaction. The usefulness of such a type of the “inverse model catalyst” for studying the oxygen diffusion supply and the redox behaviour of ceria in the ceria-platinum catalysts is demonstrated.  相似文献

The growth of Pt on clusters on TiO2(1 1 0) in the presence and absence of Rh was investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) for Pt deposited on top of 0.3 ML Rh clusters (Rh + Pt). In situ STM studies of Pt growth at room temperature show that bimetallic clusters are produced when Pt is directly incorporated into existing Rh clusters or when newly nucleated clusters of pure Pt coalesce with existing Rh clusters. Low energy ion scattering experiments demonstrate that Rh is still present at the surface of the clusters even after deposition of 2 ML of Pt, indicating that Rh atoms can diffuse to the cluster surface at room temperature. Rh clusters were found to seed the growth of Pt clusters at room temperature as well as 100 K and 450 K. Furthermore, clusters as large as 100 atoms were observed to be mobile on the surface at room temperature and 450 K, but not at 100 K. Pt deposition at 100 K exhibited more two-dimensional cluster growth and higher cluster densities compared to room temperature experiments due to the lower diffusion rate. Increased diffusion rates at 450 K resulted in more three-dimensional cluster growth and lower densities for pure Pt growth, but cluster densities for Pt + Rh growth were the same as at room temperature.  相似文献

The growth of Pt nanoclusters on thin film Al2O3 grown on NiAl(1 0 0) was studied by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The samples were prepared by vapor depositing various amounts of Pt onto the Al2O3/NiAl(1 0 0) at different substrate temperatures in ultra high vacuum (UHV). The STM images show that sizeable Pt nanoclusters grow solely on crystalline Al2O3 surface. These Pt clusters appear to be randomly distributed and only a few form evident alignment patterns, contrasting with Co clusters that are highly aligned on the crystalline Al2O3. The size distributions of these Pt clusters are rather broader than those of the Co clusters on the same surface and the sizes are evidently smaller. With increasing coverage or deposition temperature, the number of larger clusters is enhanced, while the size of the majority number of the clusters remains around the same (0.4 nm as height and 2.25 nm as diameter), which differs drastically from the Pt clusters on γ-Al2O3/NiAl(1 1 0) observed earlier. These Pt cluster growth features are mostly attributed to smaller diffusion length and ease to form stable nucleus, arising from strong Pt-Pt and Pt-oxide interactions and the peculiar protrusion structures on the ordered Al2O3/NiAl(1 0 0). The thermal stability of Pt nanoclusters was also examined. The cluster density decreased monotonically with annealing temperature up to 1000 K at the expense of smaller clusters but coalescence is not observed.  相似文献

Using molecular-dynamics simulation, we investigate the self-deposition of Aln clusters (n < 4000) on an Al substrate at velocities below the velocity of sound. Both cold crystalline and hot liquid clusters are studied. We examine the cluster deformation after impact on the surface, which we quantify by its height and base radius. At a given cluster velocity, the shape of deposited crystalline clusters is rather independent of the cluster size; only at small cluster sizes, n ? 40, the clusters are less strongly deformed. With increasing cluster size, liquid clusters are more strongly deformed than crystalline clusters. Faster projectiles become more strongly flattened by the deposition process. Even clusters depositing with vanishing velocity show a finite deformation, which is considerable for smaller clusters. At large cluster speed, clusters penetrate deeper into the (1 0 0) surface than into the (1 1 1) surface and also deform more strongly.  相似文献

Low-energy cluster beam deposition was used to deposit mass-selected Aun clusters (n = 4, 6, 13 and 20) on amorphous carbon (a-C) substrates. The resulting samples were stored at room temperature under ambient conditions for time periods up to 32 months to analyze the coarsening behaviour of the clusters. Cluster-size distributions were measured in regular time intervals by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The TEM experiments show a significant increase of the average cluster size with time analogous to classical surface Ostwald ripening (OR). The coarsening of Au clusters can be well described by steady-state diffusion-limited kinetics. The derived surface mass-transport diffusion coefficients at room temperature range between 1.1 and 3.8·10−25 m2 s−1 for our samples. A detailed analysis of values suggests that, the rate of the surface OR for mass-selected Aun clusters increases with the cluster size in the sequence: Au4 ≈ Au6 < Au13 < Au20 for the investigated range of Au clusters. Given that the initial, on-surface cluster-size distributions are nominally monodisperse, classical OR with cluster coarsening based only on the Gibbs-Thomson effect cannot explain the observed coarsening. The activation of the coarsening process is rationalized by initial variations of the cluster sizes due to the deposition process itself and/or the interaction of the clusters with the substrate. Moreover, the presence of initial deposited Au clusters as different isomers with slightly different chemical potential on the substrate, may also initiate the coarsening by surface OR. Furthermore, we find that the coarsening is most pronounced for the paucidispersed sample with Aum (10 ? m ? 20) clusters. A possible explanation of this behaviour is the presence of an initial distribution of different cluster sizes directly after deposition.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been used to investigate the nucleation and stability of iron clusters on the Al2O3/Ni3Al(1 1 1) surface as a function of coverage and annealing temperature. We show that atomic beam deposition of iron leads to hexagonally ordered cluster arrangements with a distance of 24 Å between the clusters evidencing the template effect of the alumina film. The shape of the iron clusters is two-dimensional (2D) at deposition temperatures from 130 K to 160 K and three-dimensional (3D) at 300 K. However, the 2D iron clusters grown between 130 K and 160 K are stable up to 350 K.  相似文献

No-noble metal CeO2-TiO2 catalysts prepared by sol-gel method were developed and examined for catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of acetic acid. The structure of the catalysts was measured by BET, SEM, XRD, XPS and DTA-TG. We investigated the effect of the interactions of Ce and Ti on the structure of CeO2-TiO2 catalysts. The mechanisms of the relationships between the different content of Ti and the activity of CeO2-TiO2 catalysts were discussed. The results showed that the average crystal size of CeO2 decreased and the surface areas increased; the low valence of Ce3+ increase, and the chemisorbed oxygen slightly decreased with the increase of Ti content on the surface of CeO2-TiO2 catalysts. The order of the activity in CWAO of acetic acid followed: Ce/Ti 1/1 > Ce/Ti 3/1 > Ce/Ti 1/3 > Ce/Ti 5/1 > CeO2 > TiO2 > no catalyst. In CWAO of acetic acid, the optimal atomic ratio of Ce and Ti was 1, and the highest COD removal was over 64% at 230 °C, 5 MPa and 180 min reaction time over Ce/Ti 1/1 catalyst. The excellent activity and stability of CeO2-TiO2 catalysts was observed in our study.  相似文献

Interaction of aluminium with cerium oxide was studied by photoelectron spectroscopy of Al/CeO2(1 1 1) and CeO2/Al(1 1 1) model systems. It was found in both cases that metallic aluminium was immediately oxidized, CeO2 was partially reduced and a mixed oxide with cerium present as Ce3+ was formed. The compound is probably cerium aluminate CeAlO3 mixed with Al2O3 or Ce2O3. In both cases the intermixing was limited by the diffusion of aluminium into ceria. The excess of deposited material above this limit formed AlOx and CeO2 overlayers on the top of the mixed oxide + aluminate/CeO2 and mixed oxide + aluminate/Al films, respectively.  相似文献

This article reports photoemission and STM studies for the adsorption and dissociation of water on Ce-Au(1 1 1) alloys and CeOx/Au(1 1 1) surfaces. In general, the adsorption of water at 300 K on disordered Ce-Au(1 1 1) alloys led to O-H bond breaking and the formation of Ce(OH)x species. Heating to 500-600 K induced the decomposition or disproportionation of the adsorbed OH groups, with the evolution of H2 and H2O into gas phase and the formation of Ce2O3 islands on the gold substrate. The intrinsic Ce ↔ H2O interactions were explored by depositing Ce atoms on water multilayers supported on Au(1 1 1). After adsorbing Ce on ice layers at 100 K, the admetal was oxidized immediately to yield Ce3+. Heating to room temperature produced finger-like islands of Ce(OH)x on the gold substrate. The hydroxyl groups dissociated upon additional heating to 500-600 K, leaving Ce2O3 particles over the surface. On these systems, water was not able to fully oxidize Ce into CeO2 under UHV conditions. A complete Ce2O3 → CeO2 transformation was seen upon reaction with O2. The particles of CeO2 dispersed on Au(1 1 1) did not interact with water at 300 K or higher temperatures. In this respect, they exhibited the same reactivity as does a periodic CeO2(1 1 1) surface. On the other hand, the Ce2O3/Au(1 1 1) and CeO2−x/Au(1 1 1) surfaces readily dissociated H2O at 300-500 K. These systems showed an interesting reactivity for H2O decomposition. Water decomposed into OH groups on Ce2O3/Au(1 1 1) or CeO2−x/Au(1 1 1) without completely oxidizing Ce3+ into Ce4+. Annealing over 500 K removed the hydroxyl groups leaving behind CeO2−x/Au(1 1 1) surfaces. In other words, the activity of CeOx/Au(1 1 1) for water dissociation can be easily recovered. The behavior of gold-ceria catalysts during the water-gas shift reaction is discussed in light of these results.  相似文献

Using molecular dynamics simulations and a modified analytic embedded atom potential, the self-diffusion dynamics of rhenium atomic clusters up to seven atoms on Re(0 0 0 1) surface have been studied in the temperature ranges from 600 K to 1900 K. The simulation time varies from 20 ns to 200 ns according to the cluster sizes and the temperature. The heptamer and trimer are more stable comparing to other neighboring non-compact clusters. The diffusion coefficients of clusters are derived from the mean square displacement of cluster's mass-center, and diffusion prefactors D0 and activation energies Ea are derived from the Arrhenius relation. It is found that the Arrhenius relation of the adatom can be divided into two parts at different temperature range. The activation energy of clusters increases with the increasing of the atom number in clusters. The prefactor of the heptamer is 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than a usual prefactor because of a large number of nonequivalent diffusion processes. The trimer and heptamer are the nuclei at different temperature range according to the nucleation theory.  相似文献

The structure and electronic properties of epitaxial grown CeO2(1 1 1) thin films before and after Ar+ bombardment have been comprehensively studied with synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES). Ar+ bombardment of the surface causes a new emission appearing at 1.6 eV above the Fermi edge which is related to the localized Ce 4f1 orbital in the reduced oxidation state Ce3+. Under the condition of the energy of Ar ions being 1 keV and a constant current density of 0.5 μA/cm2, the intensity of the reduced state Ce3+ increases with increasing time of sputtering and reaches a constant value after 15 min sputtering, which corresponds to the surface being exposed to 2.8 × 1015 ions/cm2. The reduction of CeO2 is attributed to a preferential sputtering of oxygen from the surface. As a result, Ar+ bombardment leads to a gradual buildup of an, approximately 0.69 nm thick, sputtering altered layer. Our studies have demonstrated that Ar+ bombardment is an effective method for reducing CeO2 to CeO2−x and the degree of the reduction is related to the energy and amount of Ar ions been exposed to the CeO2 surface.  相似文献

Sequential pulsed laser deposition of CoO and CeO2 at 650 °C under vacuum leads to the formation of a slanted Co nanowires assembly embedded in CeO2/SrTiO3(0 0 1) epilayers. High temperature magneto-optical Faraday measurements were performed, which revealed a Faraday ellipticity of 1.3° at a wavelength of 450 nm for 300 nm thick samples and which allowed to access the magnetic properties. From the analysis of the coercivity dependence on temperature, it is shown that the magnetic anisotropy of the slanted Co nanowires is dominated by shape anisotropy and that their magnetization reversal is localized.  相似文献

A plane-wave density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to investigate structural and electronic properties of TaSin (n = 1-3, 12) clusters supported by graphene surface. The resulting adsorption structures are described and discussed in terms of stability, bonding, and electron transfer between the cluster and the graphene. The TaSin clusters on graphene surface favor their free-standing ground-state structures. Especially in the cases of the linear TaSi2 and the planar TaSi3, the graphene surface may catalyze the transition of the TaSin clusters from an isomer of lower dimensionality into the ground-state structure. The adsorption site and configuration of TaSin on graphene surface are dominated by the interaction between Ta atom and graphene. Ta atom prefers to adsorb on the hollow site of graphene, and Si atoms tend to locate on the bridge site. Further, the electron transfer is found to proceed from the cluster to the surface for n = 1 and 2, while its direction reverses as n > 2. For the case of TaSi, chemisorption is shown to prevail over physisorption as the dominant mode of surface-adsorbate interaction by charge density analysis.  相似文献

A tin layer 0.8 nm thick was deposited onto the CeO2(1 1 1) surface by molecular beam deposition at a temperature of 520 K. The interaction of tin with cerium oxide (ceria) was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (RPES). The strong tin-ceria interaction led to the formation of a homogeneous bulk Ce-Sn-O mixed oxide system. The bulk compound formation is accompanied by partial Ce4+ → Ce3+ reduction, observed as a giant 4f resonance enhancement of the Ce3+ species. CeO2 and SnO2 oxides were formed after oxygen treatment at 520 K. The study proved the existence of strong Ce-Sn interaction and charge transfer from Sn to the Ce-O complex that lead to a weakening of the cerium-oxygen bond, and consequently, to the formation of oxygen deficient active sites on the ceria surface. This behavior can be a key for understanding the higher catalytic activity of the SnOx/CeOx mixed oxide catalysts as compared with the individual pure oxides.  相似文献

Rhodium clusters were prepared by evaporation on a nearly stoichiometric TiO2(1 1 0) surface. The growth of metal nanoparticles, as a function of rhodium coverage, could be followed by monitoring the Rh 3d5/2 XP peak position and by low energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEIS). The substrate temperature in the 160-300 K regime during evaporation significantly influences the cluster size, leading to smaller crystallites at low temperature. Annealing the surface results in the agglomeration of rhodium, which commenced at lower temperature for smaller clusters. At high temperatures (∼900 K) encapsulation of rhodium also occurred.  相似文献
