PADC detectors are widely used as air radon concentration measurement devices and the typical procedure that a Radon Service Laboratory uses to manage the detectors provides a calibration phase followed by the field measurement. The calibration is performed in a reference radon concentration atmosphere, using high radon concentration values in order to achieve typical exposure values of few MBq h m?3 with an exposure time of few days. On the other hand the field measurement is characterized by long term exposures lasting up to six months and by radon concentrations that are quite lower than the ones used in the calibration. The aim of this study is to check whether the calibration procedure is actually representative of a field measurement, or, in other words, whether and how much ageing or fading can affect the calibration factor. We found that the ageing and fading effect can produce a decrease in the detector sensitivity leading to an underestimation of the radon concentration up to 40% for exposure lasting few months. An important issue is that both ageing and fading can be ascribed to a decrease in the track etching velocity Vt.In the paper we also provide an algorithm to compensate for the sensitivity variation due to fading/ageing effect.  相似文献

An experimental determination of the aging process of cellulose nitrate detector material was based on the examination of special properties of the LR 115 solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) of various ages up to 18 years. The examined relevant parameters are the bulk etching rate vb and the track etching rate vt. These parameters are responsible for the appearance, the size and the registration efficiency of tracks of -particles from radon gas in the detector. To find a correlation between these material parameters and the detector sensitivity an experimental calibration of indoor room and outdoor soil detector devices based on LR 115 took place at the Umweltforschungszentrum Leipzig-Halle (Germany). To avoid routine calibration work in external radon exposure facilities a correction of the age dependent calibration factors with the material parameters measured in one's own laboratory was targeted. In this study a general age dependence, however, was not found. The following statements for practical applications can be made. (i) the bulk etching rate vb for detectors of the same batch has a depth dependence and this dependence is constant over 2 years (LR 115 September 1994). (ii) detectors of different batches older than 5 years and stored at room temperature show an odd vb behaviour when vb is used for describing track shapes. (iii) the calibration factor of detectors of different batches that were stored at about +4°C is constant over 5 years (LR 115 September 1994 and February 1999, Table 2).

The conclusion is that LR 115 detectors not older than 5 years and stored in a refrigerator at about +4°C should be preferred for radon measurements. Furthermore these detectors should be recalibrated every year and the microscope work of this calibrations should be performed by the same person who performs the measurements.

In addition, a phenomenon related to fundamental track formation mechanisms was found, that the time straggling of the time tthrough when vertical tracks penetrate the 12 μm thick detector layer is independent of the age of the detectors and the energy of the -particle at the detector surface.  相似文献

PADC detectors are commonly used both as radon detectors and as personal dosemeters for neutron radiation. In both cases the measurement in workplace fields are characterized by long term irradiations, lasting up to several months. During this period the detectors undergo to uncontrolled and unmonitored environmental conditions. In a recent work the same authors demonstrated that the environmental conditions, mainly temperature, can seriously affect the detector sensitivity. The temperature effect is to reduce the V ratio by decreasing the track etching velocity Vt. This causes a decrease in limit angle and efficiency. This paper describes the same ageing/fading test made with CR39 from a different supplier. In this case it seems that the temperature has a negligible effect, so no compensation algorithm is needed.  相似文献

Best practices concerning qualification tests of radon passive detectors recommend the application of radon standard atmospheres at controlled conditions. A measurement technique has been developed, based on the application of the new on/off alpha track passive radon detector developed at ENEA. The capability of switch and pumping functions of this device has removed the time lag due to the radon transfer inside its sensitive volume and the post-exposure due to the residual radon decay. A special exposure facility has been developed based on a set of the above passive detectors connected with flange adapters to a radon chamber wall. This apparatus can be used substantially as a radon exposure standard (RES). Results of standardization tests at the ENEA Radon Facilities are given. The paper also addresses requirements for simple and small exposure facilities that permit accurate timed exposures and can be used for testing passive devices.  相似文献

Solid state nuclear track detectors are commonly used for measurements of concentrations of radon gas and/or radon progeny. All these measurements depend critically on the thickness of the removed layer during etching. However, the thickness of removed layer calculated using the etching period does not necessarily provide a sufficiently accurate measure of the thickness. For example, the bulk etch rate depends on the strength of stirring during etching for the LR 115 detector. We propose here to measure the thickness of the removed layer by using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. In the present work, a reference silver nitrate pellet is placed beneath the LR 115 detector, and the fluorescence X-ray intensity for silver is then measured. We have found a linear relationship between the X-ray intensity and the thickness of the removed layer for LR 115 detector. This provides a fast method to measure the thickness of removed layer from etching of LR 115 detector. However, this method was found to be inapplicable for the CR-39 detector. Therefore, alternative methods have yet to be explored for the CR-39 detector.  相似文献

In selected kindergartens and schools, long-term average indoor air radon concentrations were measured by two-month exposure of etched track detectors. Short-term average concentrations were obtained from 7-10 day continuous radon recordings during the exposure of etched track detectors. Only in about 1/3 of cases both averages did agree within +/- 20%; otherwise they differ considerably. The assumption that short-term results can substitute for long-term data, which is sometimes made to correct radon exposure estimated on the basis of concentrations obtained by etched track detectors, should therefore be treated with caution.  相似文献

A new technique has been developed based on passive diffusion sampling and alpha track detection for monitoring radon exposure at working places. It is based on a device to be turned on and off at monitoring sites to permit accurate measurements of timed exposures. This technique is useful for radioprotection applications on personal and area monitoring of radon volume activity: timed measurement intervals and addition of sequential exposures. Additionally, the device allows accurate calibration with the application of radon reference atmospheres. Calibration facilities have been realized which allow starting detector exposure only at stationary conditions to avoid effects of varying radon concentration during exposure of passive integrating detectors. The contribution of the initial transient to the overall exposure ranged from about 3% to 10% according to calibration protocol. Experimental data evidence better performances of this new technique with respect to other measuring devices for integrating measurements based on radon diffusion samplers and polymeric nuclear track detectors (CR-39, LR-115 and polycarbonate). A better accuracy of calibration factor is obtained. The technical apparatus is presented and preliminary results described.  相似文献

In this work, the effect of environmental conditions viz., temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) on the track density-radon concentrations calibration factor (K) has been studied for CR-39 and LR-115 track detectors. The factorK was determined using a reference radon chamber in the National Institute for Standards (NIS) in Egypt. Track detectors were etched at the recommended optimum etching conditions. It is found that, the calibration factorK varies with bothT and RH, so they should be considered for the sake of uncertainty reduction. Good agreement is found between the calculated and measured values ofK and the compatibility between them is in the range of experimental uncertainty.  相似文献

A laboratory system for the calibration of track detectors and charcoal detectors used in monitoring of radon and its decay products/their aerosols in air, is proposed. The system consists of three main components: (i) the alpha exposure chambers, including alpha monitoring devices and the connection with the 226Ra radioactive source. The CR-39 track detectors are mounted in the monitoring devices pre-equipped or not with paper filter; (ii) the calibrated  226Ra source. Among the three tested sources: 222Rn, 226Ra+222Rn and 226Ra, the 226Ra source is considered the most appropriate radon source for our calibration system. It is kept into an airtight flat bottom flask, the radionuclide 226Ra being always in the radioactive equilibrium with their descendants. In the alpha exposure chambers, the source assures the radon at a constant rate; (iii) the ALFAUURASE program for the computation of radioactive accumulation of the alpha 226Ra descendants. For any initial mass of the parent, the amount and the activity of each alpha decay product and of all the decay products can be calculated by this computation program. Each component of the calibration system is described in the paper. The use of the system for the calibration of CR-39 track detectors in radon measurements is tested.  相似文献

In Spain, a recent modification in the regulations of protection against ionizing radiation obligates to determine radon levels in particular workplaces like spas, mines and caves. Most of these workplaces may present extreme measurement conditions like high aerosol content, temperature, and humidity that can affect the radon detector response. In our laboratory we use to determine mean radon activity concentration in air with the nuclear track detector Makrofol DE covered with an aluminized Mylar foil and placed within the FzK FN diffusion chamber with a glass fibre filter. We have compared detector response using different filter configurations in common laboratory ambient conditions. The configuration with a better response (polyethylene filter) and our reference configuration took part in a study of the effect of different temperature and humidity on our detector response carried out in the INTE radon chamber. Results obtained did not show a significant difference between detector responses with both filters. However, when we exposed them for long periods to real environmental conditions at underground sites we could observe Mylar deterioration. To look in detail into a possible effect of long-term high-humidity exposures we exposed nine sets of detectors with three different polyethylene bags, first five sets under controlled conditions in the INTE radon chamber and then four sets in long-term exposures at high humidity environments. We have seen that the Mylar foil can be damaged depending on the duration of exposure. In a radon chamber exposure time is normally limited to a few days for practical and financial reasons; therefore, results do not show if humidity affects the glass fibre filter and detectors response. To analyse it we exposed detectors in a real humid environment up to a month where we already observed Mylar deterioration due to humidity but the possible impact on track density is hidden by the scattering of the results found, so a clear conclusion cannot be stated.  相似文献

Heavy ion recording in dielectric isotropic detectors has a wide range of applications in uranium cartography or dating. In this study, solid state nuclear tracks detectors (SSNTDs) have been applied to localise neptunium-237, in vivo, by means of the neutron-induced fission cartography of neptunium-237 nuclei in organ sections. At the cellular level, a precise localisation can only be achieved with a good understanding of the etch pit evolution during the chemical etching process.

A tailor-made software for modelling the etching process has been developed to simulate the profile of an etched track produced by a neutron-induced fission fragment. This software is based on a model that considers the evolution of the track etching velocity along the damage trail in order to perfectly model the shape of the track.  相似文献

Numerous radon measurements are carried out using silicon detectors directly in the environment. This new kind of alpha radiation measurement has been developed because the reduced cost makes it possible to replace the usual plastic track detectors. At our laboratory, an alpha particle detector has been designed from a commercial silicon photodiode. This type of detector can determine the device response perfectly in any kind of environment. Different spectrum analyses have been conducted in the laboratory and field to define the exact origin of counted alpha particles. We studied the response for different radon and thoron concentration levels and observed the energy of the detected alpha particles. We carried out some of these experiments with gas flux, and some without, to show the effects of interactions with surfaces to obtain thermodynamic equilibrium in the detection chamber. Finally, the silicon diodes that we tested measure the alpha particles of the decay products (polonium) from the radon and the thoron, but very weakly from the gases themselves. Thus, it is possible to make mistakes when measuring the radon if the count of alpha particles is performed without spectrum analysis. One reason for this is that the decay progenies of the radon are solid radio-elements with thermodynamic proprieties different from gases.  相似文献

The first successful applications of damage track detectors in radiation protection have been made in the early 1970s in personal dosimetry of neutrons, radon and its progenies. Most of the scientists actively engaged in the solution of the complex problem of personal neutron dosimetry by damage track detectors—SSNTD, have attempted to develop individual radon monitoring for exposure in mines by using the same SSNTDs. In late 1970s and the early 1980s, new radon monitoring devices based on SSNTDs have been developed to measure radon in soil, mainly for applications in uranium prospecting or more generally in earth sciences. Most of the radon monitors, developed since then for completely different applications in mind, have been used later for large scale survey of indoor radon. With the current implementation within Europe of the European Union Directive 96/29, applications of damage track detectors will increase drastically, specially for the assessment of the exposure of the workers to natural sources of radiation. In this case, the early work on personal neutron/radon dosimetry, is highly valuable to tackle these new problems of individual monitoring.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed study of integral four- and five-count filter methods for the measurement of mixed radon and thoron daughter concentrations in air. The four-count method utilizes beta activity measurement while the five-count method is based on alpha activity measurement with plastic track detectors. A good correlation between the two independent detection techniques has been observed. An adequate theoretical framework is provided by interpreting the observed data.  相似文献

The CR-39 detectors are widely used as passive radon dosimeters, as well as in physics laboratories or for industrial applications. For what concerns radon monitoring, the calibration curve which is usually adopted corresponds to a linear relation between the actual etched track density and the track density counted by an automatic acquisition system. This linear calibration provides very accurate radon exposure assessments in a restricted range of etched track density, however it neglects the effect of the tracks overlapping that becomes as relevant as the track density increases. In the present work the mathematical expression of the area covered by a set of uniformly distributed tracks is deduced. This result allows then to infer the probability that the system acquires the right track density, providing a general calibration curve for a solid state radon track detector. The process of track production and reading routine is also simulated adopting a Monte Carlo approach, showing that the obtained results are in agreement with the function proposed as calibration curve. Moreover, a linear dependence between the track average area and the rate parameter of the calibration curve has been observed. Finally a semi-empirical correlation based on the previous results is proposed.  相似文献

Image analyser systems used for evaluating solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD) were compared in order to establish minimum hardware and software requirements and methodology necessary in different fields of radiation dosimetry. For the purpose, CR-39 detectors (TASL, Bristol, U.K.) were irradiated with different (n, α) and (n,p) converters in a reference Pu-Be neutron field, in an underground laboratory with high radon concentration and by different α sources at the Atomic Energy Research Institute (AERI) in Budapest, Hungary. 6 sets of etched and pre-evaluated detectors and the 7th one without etching were distributed among the 14 laboratories from 11 countries. The participants measured the different track parameters and statistically evaluated the results, to determine the performance of their system. The statistical analysis of results showed high deviations from the mean values in many cases. As the conclusion of the intercomparison recommendations were given to fulfill those requirements necessary to construct an appropriate image analyser system for evaluating SSNTDs.  相似文献

Radon and thoron isotopes are responsible for approximately half of the average annual effective dose to humans. Although the half-life of thoron is short, it can potentially enter indoor air from adobe walls. Adobe was a traditional construction material in the Great Hungarian Plain. Its major raw materials are the alluvial sediments of the area. Here, seasonal radon and thoron activity concentrations were measured in 53 adobe dwellings in 7 settlements by pairs of etched track detectors. The results show that the annual average radon and thoron activity concentrations are elevated in these dwellings and that the proportions with values higher than 300 Bq m?3 are 14–17 and 29–32% for radon and thoron, respectively. The calculated radon inhalation dose is significantly higher than the world average value, exceeding 10 mSv y?1 in 7% of the dwellings of this study. Thoron also can be a significant contributor to the inhalation dose with about 30% in the total inhalation dose. The changes of weather conditions seem to be more relevant in the variation of measurement results than the differences in the local sedimentary geology. Still, the highest values were detected on clay. Through the year, radon follows the average temperature changes and is affected by the ventilation, whereas thoron rather seems to follow the amount of precipitation.  相似文献

Abstract

Radiation damage produced by short ranged (ranges 20–30 μm) charged particles (alpha particles and fission fragments) in thick plastic track detectors (thickness ≈ 150 μm) has been enlarged to produce “through” holes by using a combination of electrochemical and chemical etching processes. A series of experiments were conducted with a view to optimize the operating conditions required to produce through holes with most suitable profiles for a particular application at hand. This novel technique has been employed in producing thick nuclear track filters using fission fragments from U-235 fission and alpha particles from radon and its daughters.  相似文献

In this paper, we review existing methods for long-term measurements of radon decay products with solid-state nuclear track detectors. We then propose a method to determine the equilibrium factor using the bare LR 115 detector. The partial sensitivities pi of the LR 115 detector to and its α-emitting short-lived progeny, and , were investigated. We determined the distributions of lengths of major and minor axes of the perforated α-tracks in the LR 115 detector produced by , and through Monte Carlo simulations. The track parameters were first calculated using a track development model with a published V function, and by assuming a removed active layer of . The distributions determined for different α-emitters were found to be completely overlapping with one another. This implied equality of partial sensitivities for radon and its progeny.Equality of partial sensitivities makes convenient measurements of a proxy equilibrium factor Fp possible which is defined in the present work as (f1+f3) and is equal to the ratio between the sum of concentrations of the two α-emitting radon progeny to the concentration of radon gas . In particular, we have found Fp=(ρ/ρitC0)-1, where ρ (track/m2) is the total track density on the detector, (for the V function mentioned above and for a removed active layer of ), t is the exposure time and C0 (Bq/m3) is the concentration of . If C0 is known (e.g., from a separate measurement), we can obtain Fp. The proxy equilibrium factor Fp is also found to be well correlated with the equilibrium factor between radon gas and its progeny through the Jacobi room model. This leads to a novel method for long-term determination of the equilibrium factor.Experimental irradiation of LR 115 detectors to known concentrations as well as known equilibrium factors were carried out to verify the present method. The relationship between ρi and the removed layer was then derived for the V function specifically determined for the LR 115 detectors we were using for the experiments. The actual removed layers for individual detectors after etching were measured accurately using surface profilometry. A curve showing the relationship between the removed layer and the track diameter of normally incident 3 MeV α-particles is also provided for other researchers, who do not have access to surface profilometry, to use the present technique conveniently.  相似文献
