Variations in large-scale seafloor slope and average seabed sound speed account for a significant portion of the variations in scattering intensity observed in low-grazing-angle monostatic reverberation. Numerical modeling using a finite-difference solution to the elastic wave equation is used to quantify the effect of these large-scale parameters in interpretations of reverberation data. For hard rough seafloor (e.g., basalt), the results of the modeling suggest that the monostatic backscattering strength increases with increasing large-scale seafloor slope up to a slope of about 15 degrees dipping toward the incident direction. Once the grazing angle of the incident wavefield exceeds the critical grazing angle for the flat reference seafloor the backscattering intensity increases only slowly with increasing grazing angle. Similarly, average subseafloor sound speed has a significant effect. Seafloor with low sound speeds characteristic of soft bottoms (e.g., sediment) generate significantly weaker backscatter signals than seafloor with sound speeds characteristic of hard bottoms (e.g., basalt). The difference is that the shear waves can always be passed into soft bottoms because even for a flat seafloor there is no shear wave critical grazing angle.

Physics-based interface scattering models for the seafloor [H.-H. Essen, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 95, 1299-1310 (1994); Gragg et al., ibid. 110, 2878-2901 (2001)] exhibit features in their predicted grazing angle dependence. These features have a strong dependence on the assumed composition and roughness of the bottom. Verifying such predictions requires data that cover a wide range of grazing angles and involve minimal sub-bottom penetration. Such measurements were performed in the frequency band 2-3.5 kHz over an exposed limestone bottom off the Carolina coast during the second Littoral Warfare Advanced Development Focused Technology Experiment of 1996 (LWAD FTE 96-2). Direct-path bottom scattering strengths were obtained in shallow water (198-310 m deep) for grazing angles from 8 degrees to 75 degrees using data fusion from multiple experimental geometries coupled with careful signal processing. The processing included corrections for the surface-reflected path, other multipaths, and characteristics of the reverberation decay observed over the pulse duration at higher grazing angles. The resulting frequency and grazing-angle dependences exhibit trends consistent with theoretical predictions, and geoacoustic parameters obtained by inversion are consistent with values expected for limestone.

Closed-form expressions for two-way propagation and reverberation in variable depth ducts are derived for isovelocity water by using ray invariants and acoustic flux. These expressions include the transition to single mode propagation at long range. Three surface scattering laws are considered: Lambert, Lommel-Seeliger, and angle independent, and these are compared with a point target to give explicit signal-to-reverberation ratios. In particular, there is interesting and sometimes surprising behavior when the propagation obeys mode-stripping (the high angles are preferentially attenuated by bottom losses) whilst the scattering obeys Lambert's law (high angles are preferentially back-scattered). There may be conditions where the signal-to-reverberation ratio is independent of range so that there is no reverberation range limit. Bottom slope dependence of both target echo and reverberation is surprisingly weak. The implications of refraction are discussed. The angle dependence for a point or surface scatterer at a given range can be translated into arrival time, so it is possible to calculate the received pulse shape for one-way or two-way paths. Because the tail is exponential with a range-independent half-life that only depends on bottom reflection properties there is scope for extracting geoacoustic information from the pulse shape alone. This environmental time spread is also of use to sonar designers.

A time domain method for calculating the acoustic impulse response of impenetrable, rough, two-dimensional (2D) surfaces is presented. The method is based on an extension of the wedge assemblage (WA) method to 2D surfaces and objects. Like the WA method for one-dimensional (1D) surfaces, the approach for 2D surfaces uses Biot's and Tolstoy's exact solution for the impulse response of an infinite impenetrable wedge [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 29, 381-391 (1957)] as its fundamental building block. The validity of the WA method for backscattering from 2D sea surfaces is assessed through comparisons with calculations based on Milder's operator expansion (OE) method [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 89, 529-541 (1991)]. Average intensities for backscattering from 2D fully developed seas (20 m/s wind speed) were computed by the WA and OE methods using 50 surface realizations and compared at 11 frequencies between 100 and 200 Hz. A single, moderately low grazing angle of incidence (20 degrees) and several scattered grazing angles (90 degrees, 45 degrees, 20 degrees , and 10 ) were considered. Excellent overall agreement between the two models was obtained. The utility of the WA method as a tool to describe the physics of the scattering process is also discussed.

A finite element model for the reverberation and propagation in a shallow water waveguide with a sandy bottom was calculated for five different environments at a center frequency of 250 Hz. The various environments included a rough water/sediment interface, a rough air/water interface, roughness at both interfaces and downward and upward refracting sound speed profiles with roughness at both interfaces. When compared to other models of reverberation such as ray theory, coupled modes, and parabolic equations, finite elements predicted higher levels of reverberation. At early times, this is due to the "fathometer" return, energy that is normally incident on the boundaries at zero range. At later times, the increased reverberation was due to high angle scattering paths between the two interfaces. Differences in reverberation levels among the environments indicated that scattered energy from the air/water interface is transmitted into the bottom at steep angles. This led to a large decrease in reverberation for a rough air/water interface relative to a rough water/sediment interface. Sound speed profile effects on reverberation were minimal at this frequency range. Calculations of the scintillation index of the different environments indicated that most of the reverberation was relatively Rayleigh-like with heavier tailed distributions at longer ranges.

According to the high-resolution radar data, backscattering scattering from sea surfaces may give rise to super events of strong scattering and large Doppler offsets for horizontal (HH) polarization at low grazing angles (LGA), which are usually considered to be caused by breaking waves. In this paper, the mesoscale breaking wave model is introduced to account for the contribution of breaking waves, which can be responsible for sea spikes and high Doppler shift. The backscattering radar cross-section (RCS) from a single breaking wave is computed and the scattering from sea surfaces is analyzed by a composite surface scattering model, in which the phase factor of every facet is modified by the capillary waves. By using the slope criterion, the spatial distribution of the breaking waves is obtained. At the same time, the RCS of sea surfaces with breaking waves is calculated and the results agree with measured data well at LGA for HH polarization. Considering the Bragg phase velocity, orbital motion of facets and wind drift, the Doppler spectrum of sea surface with breaking wave is simulated, and when compared with the result without breaking wave, there is a good improvement for HH polarization, and for the vertical polarization, the revision is little, which are agreeable with the results of recent researches.

1 Introduction Backward scattering of sound due to sediment is the main source of shallow waterreverberation. In order to predict the reverberation or detect sediment properties frommeasured reverberation data, a reasonable in-plane bistatic backward scattering (BBS)model is essential. The scattering can be caused by the roughness of water-sediment in-terface or by inhomogeneities within the volume of sediment. A great deal of researchhas been done on sediment backscattering, most of which h…

Impulse backscattering measurements by a thick-walled finite cylindrical shell are examined in the time-frequency domain to identify and characterize individual ray contributions from generalized Lamb waves excited on the shell. Previous experiments and analysis in the frequency-aspect angle domain [S. F. Morse et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 103, 785-794 (1998)] indicate that large backscattering enhancements occur in the midfrequency region for the shell tilted at large angles. Presently this experimental data is examined in the time-frequency domain for selected angles of incidence. Individual ray contributions are evident and their evolution over aspect angle is discussed. The most prominent contribution is due to the meridional ray of the a0 leaky Lamb wave. This feature distinctly highlights the truncation of the shell and is found over a range of aspect angles spanning 200 degrees for the frequencies examined. Also observed are periodic features corresponding to end-reflected helical waves of the a0-. These scattering features are significantly different from those reported for thin-walled finite cylinders at low frequencies. The present results may be useful for target identification and localization and as a comparison tool for high-frequency computational scattering models.

Acoustic scattering by benthic and planktonic shelled animals
Acoustic backscattering measurements and associated scattering modeling were recently conducted on a type of benthic shelled animal that has a spiral form of shell (Littorina littorea). Benthic and planktonic shelled animals with this shape occur on the seafloor and in the water column, respectively, and can be a significant source of acoustic scattering in the ocean. Modeling of the scattering properties allows reverberation predictions to be made for sonar performance predictions as well as for detection and classification of animals for biological and ecological applications. The studies involved measurements over the frequency range 24 kHz to 1 MHz and all angles of orientation in as small as 1 degree increments. This substantial data set is quite revealing of the physics of the acoustic scattering by these complex shelled bodies and served as a basis for the modeling. Specifically, the resonance structure of the scattering was strongly dependent upon angle of orientation and could be traced to various types of rays (e.g., subsonic Lamb waves and rays entering the opercular opening). The data are analyzed in both the frequency and time domain (compressed pulse processing) so that dominant scattering mechanisms could be identified. Given the complexity of the animal body (irregular elastic shell with discontinuities), approximate scattering models are used with only the dominant scattering properties retained. Two models are applied to the data, both approximating the body as a deformed sphere: (1) an averaged form of the exact modal-series-based solution for the spherical shell, which is used to estimate the backscattering by a deformed shell averaged over all angles of orientation, and produces reasonably accurate predictions over all k1a(esr) (k1 is the acoustic wave number of the surrounding water and a(esr) is the equivalent spherical radius of the body), and (2) a ray-based formula which is used to estimate the scattering at fixed angle of orientation, but only for high k1a(esr). The ray-based model is an extension of a model recently developed for the shelled zooplankton Limacina retroversa that has a shape similar to that of the Littorina littorea but swims through the water [Stanton et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 103, 236-253 (1998b)]. Applications of remote detection and classification of the seafloor and water column in the presence of shelled animals are discussed.

Backscattering signals at small grazing angles are important for space vehicle atmospheric reentrance and subsurface radar sensing applications. They are also useful in Fourier-transform infrared grazing-angle microscopy. Recently we performed an experimental study of far-field scattering at small grazing angles, in particular, of enhanced backscattering at grazing angles. For a randomly weak rough dielectric film upon a reflecting metal substrate, a large enhanced backscattering peak was measured. Experimental results are compared with small perturbation theoretical predictions.

A phenomenological model of long-range reverberation in a shallow sea is developed to describe the statistical characteristics and interference of the sound field scattered by bottom inhomogeneities. Experimental data on the scattering of low-frequency sound by the sea bottom are presented for a shallow-water region of the Barents Sea. The results of a numerical simulation of the low-frequency bottom reverberation in a multimode waveguide are described. The simulation is based on experimentally measured values of backscattering strength.

The particular problem of wave scattering at low grazing angles is of great interest because of its importance for the long-distance propagation of radio waves along the Earth's surface, radar observation of near surface objects, as well as solving many other fundamental and applied problems of remote sensing. One of the main questions is: how do the scattering amplitude and specific cross section behave for extremely small grazing angles? We consider the process of wave scattering by a statistically rough surface with the Neumann boundary condition. This model corresponds to sound scattering from a perfectly 'hard' surface (for example, the interface between air and the sea surface) or 'vertically' polarized electromagnetic waves scattered by a perfectly conducting one-dimensional (i.e. cylindrical) surface when the magnetic field vector is directed along the generating line of this cylindrical surface. We assume that the surface roughness is sufficiently small (in the sense of the Rayleigh parameter) and the surface is rigorously statistically homogeneous and therefore, infinite. We confine ourselves only to the first-order approximation of small perturbation theory and therefore consider every act of wave scattering in the Born approximation when the Bragg scattering process takes place. Only one resonant Fourier component of surface roughness is responsible for the scattering in a given direction. However, we take into account the attenuation of incident and scattered waves due to the multiple scattering processes on the path 'before' and 'after' a scattering event in a given direction. Also we consider every one of these multiple scattering events only in the Born approximation. The main result we have obtained is that for small grazing angles the scattering cross section of the diffuse component decreases as the second power of the grazing angles with respect to the incident and scattered directions, and as the fourth power of the grazing angle for the backscattering (radar) situation. Generalizing our results from plane-wave scattering to finite beams allows us to obtain the criterion on the beamwidth. For sufficiently narrow beams the multiple scattering processes do not play any role because of a short 'interaction path', and only single Bragg scattering determines the scattering amplitude (which does not tend to zero for small grazing angles). However, for sufficiently wide beams the result obtained for infinite plane waves becomes valid: due to the above-mentioned multiple scattering processes, the scattering amplitude tends to zero for small grazing angles. Consequently, the behaviour of the scattering cross section for small grazing angles depends on the radiation pattern width of the transmitting and receiving antennae: for sufficiently wide beams the scattering cross section decreases to zero at small grazing angles, but for narrow beams it tends to the finite non-zero value.

In this article, we report the 170° backscattering cross sections of 4He from 16O in the energy range of 2.0-9.0 MeV. Our measurements show that the alpha-oxygen scattering remains Rutherford scattering up to Eα=2.35 MeV, and there exist two energy regions, namely 5.55-5.85MeV and 8.50-8.80MeV, where the cross sections are enhanced and show a smooth variation. The measured laboratory cross sections are 9.50-9.97 and 35.0-33.0 times greater than the Rutherford values, respectively. In the 8.50-8.80MeV region, the cross sections at scattering angles of 160°, 165°, 170° and 175° were measured and found to be strongly angle-dependent. A most strong resonance occurred at 7.60 MeV, where the cross section is 200 times of its Rutherford value. This resonance has been used to measure the 16O concentration on a Cu surface, with a sensitivity of 1×1015 oxygen atoms/cm2, Besides, we have studied the backscattering angle dependence of the threshold energy, i.e., the energy at which the elastic cross section begins to deviate from its Rutherford value. The experimental result seems not in agreement with the prediction made from the analytical formula developed by Bozoian et al.

Direct measurement of acoustic scattering from the seabed at shallow grazing angles and low kilohertz frequencies presents a considerable challenge in littoral waters. Specifically, returns from the air-water interface typically contaminate the signals of interest. To address this issue, DRDC Atlantic has developed a sea-going research system for measuring acoustic scatter from the seabed in shallow-water environs. The system, known as the wideband sonar (WBS), consists of a parametric array transmitter and a superdirective receiver. In this paper, backscatter measurements obtained with the WBS at two sandy, shallow-water sites off North America's Atlantic coast are presented. Data were collected at 4 and 8 kHz at grazing angles from 3 degrees-15 degrees. The backscattering strength is similar at both sites and, below about 8 degrees, it appears to be independent of frequency within the statistical accuracy of the data. The measurements show reasonable agreement with model estimates of backscatter from sandy sediments. A small data set was collected at one of the sites to examine the feasibility of using the WBS to measure the azimuthal variability of acoustic scatter. The data set--although limited--indicates that the parametric array's narrow beamwidth makes the system well-suited to this task.

The coherent backscattering (or backscattering enhancement) effect results from persistent interferences between multiply scattered waves propagating along reciprocal paths. This effect results in a doubling of the recorded backscattered intensity reflected exactly in the backward direction with respect to any other direction, after averaging intensity measurements collected over multiple emission angles. This letter presents experimental observations of the coherent backscattering effect from mid-frequency (3-4 kHz) shallow water reverberation measurements collected using a two-dimensional hydrophone array (8.4 × 1.5 m(2)). These results demonstrate the presence of coherent effects in shallow water reverberation not commonly accounted for.

Abstract

It is shown that for scattering from a plane in an average rough surface, the scattering cross section of the range of small grazing angles of the scattered wave demonstrates a universal behaviour. If the angle of incidence is fixed (in general it should not be small), the diffusive component of the scattering cross section for the Dirichlet problem is proportional to θ2 where θ is the (small) angle of elevation, and for the Neumann problem it does not depend on θ. For the backscattering case these dependences correspondingly become θ4 and θ°. The result is obtained from the structure of the equations that determine the scattering problem rather than by use of an approximation.
