We report observation of nanostructures formed on thin TiN and DLC films that were irradiated by 800- and 267-nm, femtosecond (fs) Ti:sapphire laser pulses at an energy fluence slightly above the ablation threshold. On the ablated thin-film surfaces, the linearly polarized fs pulses produce arrays of fine periodic structures that are almost oriented to the direction perpendicular to the laser polarization, while the circularly polarized light forms fine-dot structures. The size of these surface structures is 1/10–1/5 of the laser wavelength and decreases with a decrease in the laser wavelength. We have studied the plasma induced at the surface of a titanium target following irradiation with femtosecond and nanosecond laser pulses. Time-resolved imaging and spectroscopic measurements allowed us to evidence some features specific to the femtosecond-laser-induced plasma. In this ultrashort interaction regime, we could discriminate between three different velocity populations in the plasma expansion. Coulomb explosion firstly creates highly energetic Ti+ ions, which are followed by atomic neutral titanium and lastly by nanoscale titanium oxide clusters. We present a 7-TW Ti:sapphire laser system operating at 50 Hz for laser Compton femtosecond X-ray generation. This laser system delivers 8.4 W of average output power at a repetition rate of 50 Hz with a pulse width of 24 fs. It demonstrates successful management using a dynamically stable resonator in the regenerative amplifier and compensation for thermal lensing by a convex mirror in a ring-type four-pass power amplifier. We also present the results of closed-loop corrections for distorted wavefronts of amplified and compressed laser pulses, using an adaptive optical system consisting of a Shack–Hartmann-type wavefront sensor and a deformable mirror. This closed-loop correction results in dramatic improvements, reducing wavefront distortions below 0.05 λ rms. Deep drilling of metals by femtosecond laser pulses   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Results of recent investigations on deep drilling of metals by femtosecond laser pulses are reported. At high laser fluences, well above the ablation threshold, femtosecond lasers can drill deep, high-quality holes in metals without any post-processing or special gas environment. It is shown that for high-quality drilling of metals, the following processes are important: (1) laser-induced optical breakdown of air containing metal vapor and small metal particles (debris) generated by multi-pulse femtosecond laser ablation, (2) transformation of laser pulses into light filaments, and (3) low-fluence finishing. A 50 cm silver coated hollow fiber with inner diameter of 250 μm and filled with argon has been used to compress optical pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser at 800 nm. Input pulses with energy of 250 μJ and duration of 110 fs were used and compressed pulses with energy of 220 μJ and duration of 20 fs were generated by using a prism compressor. Numerical and experimental results are compared. There is good agreement between the measured beam diameters of the hollow-fiber output pulse and the calculated values obtained from propagation of the HE11 mode into free space. For comparison, a similar uncoated fused-silica hollow fiber was also used to obtain 20 fs compressed pulses with an energy of 190 μJ. Atomic-scale structural changes have been observed in the glass network of fused silica after modification by tightly focused 800-nm, 130-fs laser pulses at fluences between 5 and 200 J cm-2. Raman spectroscopy of the modified glass shows an increase in the 490 and 605-cm-1 peaks, indicating an increase in the number of 4- and 3-membered ring structures in the silica network. These results provide evidence that densification of the glass occurs after exposure to fs pulses. Fluorescence spectroscopy of the modified glass shows a broad fluorescence band at 630 nm, indicating the formation of non-bridging oxygen hole centers (NBOHC) by fs pulses. Waveguides that support the fundamental mode at 633 nm have been fabricated inside fused silica by scanning the glass along the fs laser beam axis. The index changes are estimated to be approximately 0.07×10-3. Received: 17 December 2001 / Accepted: 9 July 2002 / Published online: 25 October 2002 RID="*" ID="*"Corresponding author. A differential optical transmission technique has been used to monitor in situ the efficiency of laser cleaning for the removal of sub-micrometer-sized particles on substrates transparent at the monitoring wavelength. This technique has been applied to the removal of sub-micrometer polystyrene particles on polyimide substrates using laser pulses of 30 ps duration at 292 nm while probing the material transmission at 633 nm. The sensitivity achieved -1/104 for the transmission changes induced upon single-pulse laser exposure – allows us to monitor the removal of just a few sub-micron-sized particles from the probed region inside the irradiated area. A reliable and efficient method based on a geometrical optical approach is presented to model the propagation of ultrashort pulses in optical systems. It is shown that the commonly used method to determine the group delay of the spectral components of a pulse from their geometrical optical path lengths is only correct for aberration-free optical systems. In the case of systems with angular dispersion and imaging errors, a correction to the path values obtained from ray-tracing calculations must be applied, since for specific systems neglect of the correction causes significant errors. A technique for performing this correction is presented. Two optical arrangements used for the generation and detection of tunable THz radiation by the femtosecond tilted-pulse-front excitation technique are analyzed to demonstrate the indispensability of the correction. Chaos in photovoltaic HgCdTe detectors under laser irradiation   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Chaos in photovoltaic HgCdTe detectors irradiated by a low-power stable continuous-wave laser is found in our experiment. The detectors give a chaotic output in the laser irradiation power density range a little higher than their saturation threshold. Chaos is diagnosed by calculating the power spectrum and the Lyapunov exponent with experimental data of the detectors’ output signals vs. time. We conclude with a qualitative discussion of the possible causes of the observed chaotic behavior. Femtosecond laser pulses can locally induce structural and chemical changes in the bulk of transparent materials, opening the door to the three-dimensional fabrication of optical devices. We review the laser and focusing parameters that have been applied to induce these changes and discuss the different physical mechanisms that play a role in forming them. We then describe a new technique for inducing refractive-index changes in bulk material using a high-repetition-rate femtosecond oscillator. The changes are caused by a localized melting of the material, which results from an accumulation of thermal energy due to nonlinear absorption of the high-repetition-rate train of laser pulses. The micromachining of hydroxyapatite (HAp) is highly important for orthopedics and dentistry, since human bone and teeth consist mainly of HAp. We demonstrate ultrashort Ti:sapphire laser ablation of HAp, using pulse-widths of 50 fs, 500 fs, and 2 ps at a wavelength of 820 nm and at 1 kpps. The crucial medical issue is to preserve the chemical properties of the machined (ablated) surface. If the chemical properties of HAp change, the human bone or tooth cannot re-grow after laser processing. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we observe chemical properties of HAp ablated in air. The HAp is ablated at laser fluences of 3.2 J/cm2 (6.4×1013 W/cm2 at 50 fs), 3.3 J/cm2 (6.6×1012 W/cm2 at 500 fs), and 9.6 J/cm2 (4.8×1012 W/cm2 at 2 ps), respectively. As a result it is found that the ablated surface is unchanged after laser ablation over the pulse-width range used in this experiment. The time-resolved dynamics of plasma self-channeling and refractive index bulk modification in silica glasses were first observed in situ using a high-intensity femtosecond (110 fs) Ti:sapphire laser (λp=790 nm). Plasma channeling is induced in silica glass at an irradiation higher than an input intensity of 1.5×1012 W/cm2 and photoinduces either the refractive-index modification or optical crack modification. In the domain of refractive-index modification, the lifetime of induced plasma self-channeling was 20 ps and the structural transition time for forming the refractive-index change was 10 ps. In the domain of optical cracks, however, the lifetime of induced plasma formation was 30 ps and the structural transition time for forming the optical cracks was 40 ps. According to electron spin resonance spectroscopic (ESP) measurement, it was found that the defect concentration of the SiE center increased significantly in the refractive index modification region. A maximum value of the refractive-index change Δn was measured to be 1.6×10-2. The intensity profile of the output beam transmitted through the refractive-index modification showed that the bulk modification produced a permanent optical waveguide. The influence of prepulses on the conversion efficiency (CE) of laser radiation into 13 nm extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation, resulting from lithium-like oxygen ions from O20 μm water droplets, was investigated. The laser pulse durations in the experiment ranged from 200 fs to 120 ps. Applying prepulses preceding the main pulse at various delays of up to 11 ns, it was shown that the CE increases differently for each measured pulse duration. The strongest dependence on the introduction of a prepulse was observed for 2 ps laser pulses with a 20 mJ laser pulse energy. The EUV CE was improved by a factor of 15 by the introduction of a prepulse. Calculations on the atomic physics of oxygen ions and simulations of the laser–plasma interaction revealed the influence of the prepulse on the EUV yield. Polarization-dependent spatial beam profiles of femtosecond X-ray pulses generated by a laser Compton scheme were measured. The X-ray pulses were generated by the interaction at an angle of 90° between 100-fs laser light and a 3-ps, 3π-mm mrad electron beam. The polarization of the laser light was linear in two different directions, either parallel or perpendicular to the electron beam axis. The measured profiles showed good agreement with theoretical results. Received: 5 July 2002 / Revised version: 17 October 2002 / Published online: 5 February 2003 RID="*" ID="*"Corresponding author. We developed a high-power oscillator–regenerative amplifier femtosecond laser system. Based on chromium-doped forsterite. The system is operating near 1.25 μm at a 5–10 kHz repetition rate. Chirped-pulse amplification produced 0.86 W (0.75 W) of average power, or 465 mW (400 mW) after compression at 5 kHz (10 kHz). Nearly bandwidth-limited pulses of duration 135 fs (shortest) and 150 fs (typical) are available with an energy of 93 μJ and 40 μJ at 5 and 10 kHz, respectively. Photonic-molecule modes of a cobweb-microstructure fiber allow efficient nonlinear optical spectral broadening of nanojoule femtosecond light pulses. Spectral widths of approximately 200 nm are achieved at the output of a 6-cm sample of such a fiber for 40-fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses with an energy of a few nanojoules coupled into photonic-molecule modes. Higher values of the group index and a lower group-velocity dispersion, attainable with higher-order photonic-molecule modes, allow the efficiency of spectral broadening of femtosecond laser pulses to be increased relative to the efficiency of spectral broadening in the fundamental photonic-molecule mode. Passive mode locking and saturable absorber Q-switching of neodymium lasers at 1.3 μm with PbS-doped phosphate glasses are demonstrated. Q-switched pulses of 120 ns (0.1 μJ) in duration (energy) and the average output power of 3 mW from a quasi-cw diode-pumped Nd3+:KGW laser and ultrashort pulses of a maximum of 250 μJ in energy and 150 ps in duration from a Nd3+:YAP laser were obtained. The bleaching decay rate of the samples was found to increase with the Quantum Dot’s size decreasing due to the enhancement of quantum confinement effects for smaller dots and stronger overlapping of the electron and trap state wave functions. The generation of submicron-sized holes on metal surfaces by applying femtosecond UV laser pulses was investigated. Different optical schemes based on a Schwarzschild-type reflective objective were used to reach optimized ablation quality and efficiency in different applications (hole ablation, through-hole drilling, generation of surface patterns consisting of holes, etc.). Submicron-sized holes and hole patterns were ablated onto metal surfaces and drilled through ∼5-μm-thick steel foils with 600-nm diameter on the output side. Using a special optical interferometric method, large-area surface processing of high-conductivity materials in the submicron regime was performed. Combining these techniques with the application of high-repetition-rate ultra-short UV laser sources, large-area sub-μm processing of all kinds of materials in industrial environments is possible. Planar gratings have wide applications and to date, many methods for the fabrication of gratings have been reported. Ultrashort pulse lasers have been used for the machining of gratings primarily because they allow direct ablation and the manufacturing of sub-wavelength structures. In this paper, we present a novel direct ablation technique for the fabrication of planar gratings which makes use of the interference of ultrashort pulses in a common optical path configuration. This technique of grating fabrication not only simplifies the optical setup, but also immunizes the system to extraneous and inherent vibrations, thus enabling the manufacturing of planar gratings of good edge acuity. We have successfully fabricated planar gratings on a copper substrate. Received: 6 November 2001 / Accepted: 4 March 2002 / Published online: 10 September 2002 RID="*" ID="*"Corresponding author.
