The experiment compared the pitches of complex tones consisting of unresolved harmonics. The fundamental frequency (F0) of the tones was 250 Hz and the harmonics were bandpass filtered between 5500 and 7500 Hz. Two 20-ms complex-tone bursts were presented, separated by a brief gap. The gap was an integer number of periods of the waveform: 0, 4, or 8 ms. The envelope phase of the second tone burst was shifted, such that the interpulse interval (IPI) across the gap was reduced or increased by 0.25 or 0.75 periods (1 or 3 ms). A "no shift" control was also included, where the IPI was held at an integer number of periods. Pitch matches were obtained by varying the F0 of a comparison tone with the same temporal parameters as the standard but without the shift. Relative to the no-shift control, the variations in IPI produced substantial pitch shifts when there was no gap between the bursts, but little effect was seen for gaps of 4 or 8 ms. However, for some conditions with the same IPI in the shifted interval, an increase in the IPI of the comparison interval from 4 to 8 ms (gap increased from 0 to 4 ms) changed the pitch match. The presence of a pitch shift suggests that the pitch mechanism is integrating information across the two tone bursts. It is argued that the results are consistent with a pitch mechanism employing a long integration time for continuous stimuli that is reset in response to temporal discontinuities. For a 250-Hz F0, an 8-ms IPI may be sufficient for resetting. Pitch models based on a spectral analysis of the simulated neural spike train, on an autocorrelation of the spike train, and on the mean rate of pitch pulses, all failed to account for the observed pitch matches.  相似文献

Complex tone bursts were bandpass filtered, 22nd-30th harmonic, to produce waveforms with five regularly occurring envelope peaks ("pitch pulses") that evoked pitches associated with their repetition period. Two such tone bursts were presented sequentially and separated by an interpulse interval (IPI). When the IPI was varied, the pitch of the whole sequence was shifted by between +2% and -5%. When the IPI was greater than one period, little effect was seen. This is consistent with a pitch mechanism employing a long integration time for continuous stimuli that resets in response to temporal discontinuities of greater than about one period of the waveform. Similar pitch shifts were observed for fundamental frequencies from 100 to 250 Hz. The pitch shifts depended on the IPI duration relative to the period of the complex, not on the absolute IPI duration. The pitch shifts are inconsistent with the autocorrelation model of Meddis and O'Mard [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 102, 1811-1820 (1997)], although a modified version of the weighted mean-interval model of Carlyon et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 112, 621-633 (2002)] was successful. The pitch shifts suggest that, when two pulses occur close together, one of the pulses is ignored on a probabilistic basis.  相似文献

To find the possible reasons for the midlevel elevation of the Weber fraction in intensity discrimination of a tone burst, a comparison was performed for the complementary distributions of spike activity of an ensemble of space nerves, such as the distribution of time instants when spikes occur, the distribution of interspike intervals, and the autocorrelation function. The distribution properties were detected in a poststimulus histogram, an interspike interval histogram, and an autocorrelation histogram—all obtained from the reaction of an ensemble of model space nerves in response to an auditory noise burst–useful tone burst complex. Two configurations were used: in the first, the peak amplitude of the tone burst was varied and the noise amplitude was fixed; in the other, the tone burst amplitude was fixed and the noise amplitude was varied. Noise could precede or follow the tone burst. The noise and tone burst durations, as well as the interval between them, was 4 kHz and corresponded to the characteristic frequencies of the model space nerves. The profiles of all the mentioned histograms had two maxima. The values and the positions of the maxima in the poststimulus histogram corresponded to the amplitudes and mutual time position of the noise and the tone burst. The maximum that occurred in response to the tone burst action could be a basis for the formation of the loudness of the latter (explicit loudness). However, the positions of the maxima in the other two histograms did not depend on the positions of tone bursts and noise in the combinations. The first maximum fell in short intervals and united intervals corresponding to the noise and tone burst durations. The second maximum fell in intervals corresponding to a tone burst delay with respect to noise, and its value was proportional to the noise amplitude or tone burst amplitude that was smaller in the complex. An increase in tone burst or noise amplitudes was caused by nonlinear variations in the two maxima and the ratio between them. The size of the first maximum in the of interspike interval distribution could be the basis for the formation of the loudness of the masked tone burst (implicit loudness), and the size of the second maximum, for the formation of intensity in the periodicity pitch of the complex. The auditory effect of the midlevel enhancement of tone burst loudness could be the result of variations in the implicit tone burst loudness caused by variations in tone-burst or noise intensity. The reason for the enhancement of the Weber fraction could be competitive interaction between such subjective qualities as explicit and implicit tone-burst loudness and the intensity of the periodicity pitch of the complex.  相似文献

Three experiments measured the perceived continuity of two pure tones "flankers" through a masker containing a silence. Experiment 1 used a 2I-2AFC procedure; one interval contained two noise bursts separated by a silent gap, and the other contained two noise bursts separated by a tone of the same duration as the silence. Discrimination between masker conditions was very accurate when the flankers were absent but was impaired substantially when the flankers were present. This was taken as evidence that illusory flanker continuity during the silent gap was heard as similar to the physical presence of a tone in the gap. In experiment 2, performance remained poor when the flankers were frequency glides aligned along a common trajectory. Performance improved significantly when the flankers were misaligned in trajectory. In experiment 3, listeners rated directly perceived flanker continuity. Strong continuity was reported in the silent gap conditions for which poor performance had been observed in experiments 1 and 2. These findings show that continuity may be heard through a masker that cannot mask a physically continuous tone but can mask the flankers' offset and onset. The results are explained in terms of the perceptual grouping of onsets and offsets of the flankers.  相似文献

We investigate Hodgkin–Huxley neuron model with external Gaussian noise in the range of parameters where it exhibits bistability of silent and firing states, and noise-induced bursts occur. We study the response of the system to brief single pulse of current. When noise amplitude increases, the delay time between the stimulus and the first spike decreases substantially even for subthreshold stimulus. The mean number of spikes in a post-stimulus burst has a maximum in a certain range of noise amplitudes. Therefore, we found that Hodgkin–Huxley neuron in the stochastic bursting regime has more improved sensitivity to single-pulse stimulus than in the silent one.  相似文献

Brain-stem auditory evoked responses (BAERs) were obtained in eight normal-hearing young adults. Stimuli included clicks, noise bursts, and tone bursts. Tone bursts included carrier frequencies of 1, 2, 4, and 8 kHz. All stimuli were presented at 60 dB nHL. BAERs were obtained by presenting stimuli in pseudorandom trains, called maximum length sequences (MLSs). BAERs were recovered by cross correlating the responses with a recovery sequence. MLS-BAERs were obtained with minimum pulse intervals (MPIs) of 6, 4, and 2 ms. Conventional BAERs were also obtained for stimuli presented at a rate of 30 Hz. BAERs were obtained for all stimuli, for both the conventional averaging technique and for the cross-correlation technique. BAERs were observed for MPIs as short as 2 ms for all stimuli. Wave V was the only peak consistently identifiable for these stimuli. For all stimuli, wave V latency increased and wave V amplitude decreased with decreasing MPI. This is the first demonstration of the use of maximum length sequences combined with cross correlation to obtain BAERs to noise burst and tone burst stimuli.  相似文献

A series of experiments evaluated the effects of broadband noise (ipsilateral) on wave V of the brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) elicited by tone bursts or clicks in the presence of high-pass masking noise. Experiment 1 used 1000- and 4000-Hz, 60-dB nHL tone bursts in the presence of broadband noise. With increasing noise level, wave V latency shift was greater for the 1000-Hz tone bursts, while amplitude decrements were similar for both tone-burst frequencies. Experiment 2 varied high-pass masker cutoff frequency and the level of subtotal masking in the presence of 50-dB nHL clicks. The effects of subtotal masking on wave V (increase in latency and decrease in amplitude) increased with increasing derived-band frequency. Experiment 3 covaried high-pass masker cutoff frequency and subtotal masking level for 1000- and 4000-Hz tone-burst stimuli. The effect of subtotal masking on wave V latency was reduced for both tone-burst frequencies when the response-generating region of the cochlear partition was limited by high-pass maskers. The results of these three experiments suggest that most of the wave V latency shift associated with increasing levels of broadband noise is mediated by a place mechanism when the stimulus is a moderate intensity (60 dB nHL), low-frequency (1000 Hz) tone burst. However, the interpretation of the latency shifts produced by broadband noise for 4000-Hz tone-burst stimuli is made more complex by multiple technical factors discussed herein.  相似文献

This paper reports on listening tests performed to investigate the just audible tonality (JAT) of decaying pure tone bursts. Both exponential and Gaussian functions are used to shape the envelopes of the tone bursts and critical band center frequencies between 150 and 7000 Hz are studied. Loudness compensation is implemented to compensate for the reduced loudness of short tone bursts and attack functions are used for minimizing clicks. By using the method of limits, a sequence of tone bursts with increasing decay times and constant frequencies is presented to the listeners at 0.9 s intervals. The first burst in the sequence which is perceived as being tonal is indicated by the listeners. When that happens, the decay times of the tone bursts decrease and the listeners are asked to select the first tone burst with no audible tonality. The listeners are allowed to freely define tonality. No reference is given. For frequencies above 3.4 kHz, the results indicate that tonality is just audible for tone burst lengths of approximately 2.6-3.0 ms. For the lowest stimuli frequencies, the corresponding burst length is approximately 20-23 ms.  相似文献

The study measured listener sensitivity to increments in the inter-onset intervals (IOIs) of successive 20-ms 4000-Hz tone bursts in isochronous sequences. The stimulus sequences contained two-six tone bursts, separated equally by silent intervals, with tonal IOIs ranging from 25 to 100 ms. Difference limens (DLs) for increments of the tonal IOIs were measured to assess listener sensitivity to changes of sequence rate. Comparative DLs were also measured for increments of a single interval located within six-tone isochronous sequences with different tone rates. Listeners included younger normal-hearing adults and two groups of older adults with and without high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. The results, expressed as Weber fractions (DL/IOI), revealed that discrimination improved as the sequence tone rate decreased and the number of tonal components increased. Discrimination of a single sequence interval also improved as the number of sequence components increased from two to six but only for brief intervals and fast sequence rates. Discrimination performance of the older listeners with and without hearing loss was equivalent and significantly poorer than that of the younger listeners. The discrimination results are examined and discussed within the context of multiple-look mechanisms and possible age-related differences in the sensory coding of signal onsets.  相似文献

To study the mechanisms that govern the coding of temporal features of complex sound signals, responses of single neurons located in the dorsal nucleus of the medulla oblongata (the cochlear nucleus) of a curarized grass frog (Rana temporaria) to pure tone bursts and amplitude modulated tone bursts with a modulation frequency of 20 Hz and modulation depths of 10 and 80% were recorded. The carrier frequency was equal to the characteristic frequency of a neuron, the average signal level was 20–30 dB above the threshold, and the signal duration was equal to ten full modulation periods. Of the 133 neurons studied, 129 neurons responded to 80% modulated tone bursts by discharges that were phase-locked with the envelope waveform. At this modulation depth, the best phase locking was observed for neurons with the phasic type of response to tone bursts. For tonic neurons with low characteristic frequencies, along with the reproduction of the modulation, phase locking with the carrier frequency of the signal was observed. At 10% amplitude modulation, phasic neurons usually responded to only the onset of a tone burst. Almost all tonic units showed a tendency to reproduce the envelope, although the efficiency of the reproduction was low, and for half of these neurons, it was below the reliability limit. Some neurons exhibited a more efficient reproduction of the weak modulation. For almost half of the neurons, a reliable improvement was observed in the phase locking of the response during the tone burst presentation (from the first to the tenth modulation period). The cooperative histogram of a set of neurons responding to 10% modulated tone bursts within narrow ranges of frequencies and intensities retains the information on the dynamics of the envelope variation. The data are compared with the results obtained from the study of the responses to similar signals in the acoustic midbrain center of the same object and also with the psychophysical effect of a differential sensitivity increase in the process of adaptation.  相似文献

Carlyon and Shackleton [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 95, 3541-3554 (1994)] presented an influential study supporting the existence of two pitch mechanisms, one for complex tones containing resolved and one for complex tones containing only unresolved components. The current experiments provide an alternative explanation for their finding, namely the existence of across-frequency interference in fundamental frequency (F0) discrimination. Sensitivity (d') was measured for F0 discrimination between two sequentially presented 400 ms complex (target) tones containing only unresolved components. In experiment 1, the target was filtered between 1375 and 15,000 Hz, had a nominal F0 of 88 Hz, and was presented either alone or with an additional complex tone ("interferer"). The interferer was filtered between 125-625 Hz, and its F0 varied between 88 and 114.4 Hz across blocks. Sensitivity was significantly reduced in the presence of the interferer, and this effect decreased as its F0 was moved progressively further from that of the target. Experiment 2 showed that increasing the level of a synchronously gated lowpass noise that spectrally overlapped with the interferer reduced this "pitch discrimination interference (PDI)". In experiment 3A, the target was filtered between 3900 and 5400 Hz and had an F0 of either 88 or 250 Hz. It was presented either alone or with an interferer, filtered between 1375 and 1875 Hz with an F0 corresponding to the nominal target F0. PDI was larger in the presence of the resolved (250 Hz F0) than in the presence of the unresolved (88 Hz F0) interferer, presumably because the pitch of the former was more salient than that of the latter. Experiments 4A and 4B showed that PDI was reduced but not eliminated when the interferer was gated on 200 ms before and off 200 ms after the target, and that some PDI was observed with a continuous interferer. The current findings provide an alternative interpretation of a study supposedly providing strong evidence for the existence of two pitch mechanisms.  相似文献

The relation between the auditory brain stem potential called the frequency-following response (FFR) and the low pitch of complex tones was investigated. Eleven complex stimuli were synthesized such that frequency content varied but waveform envelope periodicity was constant. This was accomplished by repeatedly shifting the components of a harmonic complex tone upward in frequency by delta f of 20 Hz, producing a series of six-component inharmonic complex tones with constant intercomponent spacing of 200 Hz. Pitch-shift functions were derived from pitch matches for these stimuli to a comparison pure tone for each of four normal hearing adults with extensive musical training. The FFRs were recorded for the complex stimuli that were judged most divergent in pitch by each subject and for pure-tone signals that were judged equal in pitch to these complex stimuli. Spectral analyses suggested that the spectral content of the FFRs elicited by the complex stimuli did not vary consistently with component frequency or the first effect of pitch shift. Furthermore, complex and pure-tone signals judged equal in pitch did not elicit FFRs of similar spectral content.  相似文献

Percent correct performance for discrimination of the fundamental frequency (0) of a complex tone was measured as a function of the level of a background pink noise (using fixed values of the difference in F0, deltaF0) and compared with percent correct performance for detection of the complex tone in noise, again as a function of noise level. The tone included some low, resolvable components, but not the fundamental component. The results were used to test the hypothesis that the worsening in F0 discrimination with increasing noise level was caused by the reduced detectability of the tone rather than by reduced precision of the internal representation of F0. For small values of deltaF0, the hypothesis was rejected because measured performance fell below that predicted by the hypothesis. However, this was true only for high noise levels, within 2-4.5 dB of the level required for masked threshold. The results indicate that the mechanism for extracting the F0 of a complex tone with resolved harmonics is remarkably robust. They also indicate that adding a background noise to a complex tone containing resolved harmonics is not a good means for equating its pitch salience with that of a complex tone containing only unresolved harmonics.  相似文献

Intense high frequency (25–38 kHz) tone bursts have been observed in acoustic tests of a scale model of a general aviation propeller. The amplitude of the tone burst is approximately equal to the amplitude of the propeller noise signature. The conditions necessary for the production of these tone bursts are described. The experiments indicate that the origin of these bursts is a periodic flow oscillation on the suction surface of the propeller blade tips which may be due to the interaction between an oscillating shock wave and a laminar boundary layer.  相似文献

Thresholds (F0DLs) were measured for discrimination of the fundamental frequency (F0) of a group of harmonics (group B) embedded in harmonics with a fixed F0. Miyazono and Moore [(2009). Acoust. Sci. & Tech. 30, 383386] found a large training effect for tones with high harmonics in group B, when the harmonics were added in cosine phase. It is shown here that this effect was due to use of a cue related to pitch pulse asynchrony (PPA). When PPA cues were disrupted by introducing a temporal offset between the envelope peaks of the harmonics in group B and the remaining harmonics, F0DLs increased markedly. Perceptual learning was examined using a training stimulus with cosine-phase harmonics, F0 = 50 Hz, and high harmonics in group B, under conditions where PPA was not useful. Learning occurred, and it transferred to other cosine-phase tones, but not to random-phase tones. A similar experiment with F0 = 100 Hz showed a learning effect which transferred to a cosine-phase tone with mainly high unresolved harmonics, but not to cosine-phase tones with low harmonics, and not to random-phase tones. The learning found here appears to be specific to tones for which F0 discrimination is based on distinct peaks in the temporal envelope.  相似文献

The detectability of a masked sinusoid increases as its onset approaches the temporal center of a masker. This study was designed to determine whether a similar change in detectability would occur for a silent gap as it was parametrically displaced from the onset of a noise burst. Gap thresholds were obtained for 13 subjects who completed five replications of each condition in 3 to 13 days. Six subjects were inexperienced listeners who ranged in age from 18 to 25 years; seven subjects were highly experienced and ranged in age from 20 to 78 years. The gaps were placed in 150-ms, 6-kHz, low-passed noise bursts presented at an overall level of 75 dB SPL; the bursts were digitally shaped at onset and offset with 10-ms cosine-squared rise-fall envelopes. The gated noise bursts were presented in a continuous, unfiltered, white noise floor attenuated to an overall level of 45 dB SPL. Gap onsets were parametrically delayed from the onset of the noise burst (defined as the first nonzero point on the waveform envelope) by 10, 11, 13, 15, 20, 40, 60, 110, 120, and 130 ms. Results of ANOVAs indicated that the mean gap thresholds were longer when the gaps were proximal to signal onset or offset and shorter when the gaps approached the temporal center of the noise burst. Also, the thresholds of the younger, highly experienced subjects were significantly shorter than those of the younger, inexperienced subjects, especially at placements close to signal onset or offset. The effect of replication (short-term practice) was not significant nor was the interaction between gap placement and replication. Post hoc comparisons indicated that the effect of gap placement resulted from significant decreases in gap detectability when the gap was placed close to stimulus onset and offset.  相似文献

In this study the perception of the fundamental frequency (F0) of periodic stimuli by cochlear implant users is investigated. A widely used speech processor is the Continuous Interleaved Sampling (CIS) processor, for which the fundamental frequency appears as temporal fluctuations in the envelopes at the output. Three experiments with four users of the LAURA (Registered trade mark of Philips Hearing Implants, now Cochlear Technology Centre Europe) cochlear implant were carried out to examine the influence of the modulation depth of these envelope fluctuations on pitch discrimination. In the first experiment, the subjects were asked to discriminate between two SAM (sinusoidally amplitude modulated) pulse trains on a single electrode channel differing in modulation frequency ( deltaf = 20%). As expected, the results showed a decrease in the performance for smaller modulation depths. Optimal performance was reached for modulation depths between 20% and 99%, depending on subject, electrode channel, and modulation frequency. In the second experiment, the smallest noticeable difference in F0 of synthetic vowels was measured for three algorithms that differed in the obtained modulation depth at the output: the default CIS strategy, the CIS strategy in which the F0 fluctuations in the envelope were removed (FLAT CIS), and a third CIS strategy, which was especially designed to control and increase the depth of these fluctuations (F0 CIS). In general, performance was poorest for the FLAT CIS strategy, where changes in F0 are only apparent as changes of the average amplitude in the channel outputs. This emphasizes the importance of temporal coding of F0 in the speech envelope for pitch perception. No significantly better results were obtained for the F0 CIS strategy compared to the default CIS strategy, although the latter results in envelope modulation depths at which sub-optimal scores were obtained in some cases of the first experiment. This indicates that less modulation is needed if all channels are stimulated with synchronous F0 fluctuations. This hypothesis is confirmed in a third experiment where subjects performed significantly better in a pitch discrimination task with SAM pulse trains, if three channels were stimulated concurrently, as opposed to only one.  相似文献

Harmonic complex tones comprising components in different spectral regions may differ considerably in timbre. While the pitch of "residue" tones of this type has been studied extensively, their timbral properties have received little attention. Discrimination of F0 for such tones is typically poorer than for complex tones with "corresponding" harmonics [A. Faulkner, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 78, 1993-2004 (1985)]. The F0 DLs may be higher because timbre differences impair pitch discrimination. The present experiment explores effects of changes in spectral locus and F0 of harmonic complex tones on both pitch and timbre. Six normally hearing listeners indicated if the second tone of a two-tone sequence was: (1) same, (2) higher in pitch, (3) lower in pitch, (4) same in pitch but different in "something else," (5) higher in pitch and different in "something else," or (6) lower in pitch and different in "something else" than the first. ("Something else" is assumed to represent timbre.) The tones varied in spectral loci of four equal-amplitude harmonics m, m + 1, m + 2, and m + 3 (m = 1,2,3,4,5,6) and ranged in F0 from 200 to 200 +/- 2n Hz (n = 0,1,2,4,8,16,32). Results show that changes in F0 primarily affect pitch, and changes in spectral locus primarily affect timbre. However, a change in spectral locus can also influence pitch. The direction of locus change was reported as the direction of pitch change, despite no change in F0 or changes in F0 in the opposite direction for delta F0 < or = 0-2%. This implies that listeners may be attending to the "spectral pitch" of components, or to changes in a timbral attribute like "sharpness," which are construed as changes in overall pitch in the absence of strong F0 cues. For delta F0 > or = 2%, the direction of reported pitch change accord with the direction of F0 change, but the locus change continued to be reported as a timbre change. Rather than spectral-pitch matching of corresponding components, a context-dependent spectral evaluation process is thus implied in discernment of changes in pitch and timbre. Relative magnitudes of change in derived features of the spectrum such as harmonic number and F0, and absolute features such as spectral frequencies are compared. What is called "spectral pitch," contributes to the overall pitch, but also appears to be an important dimension of the multidimensional percept, timbre.  相似文献

The influence of the degree of envelope modulation and periodicity on the loudness and effectiveness of sounds as forward maskers was investigated. In the first experiment, listeners matched the loudness of complex tones and noise. The tones had a fundamental frequency (F0) of 62.5 or 250 Hz and were filtered into a frequency range from the 10th harmonic to 5000 Hz. The Gaussian noise was filtered in the same way. The components of the complex tones were added either in cosine phase (CPH), giving a large crest factor, or in random phase (RPH), giving a smaller crest factor. For each F0, subjects matched the loudness between all possible stimulus pairs. Six different levels of the fixed stimulus were used, ranging from about 30 dB SPL to about 80 dB SPL in 10-dB steps. Results showed that, at a given overall level, the CPH and the RPH tones were louder than the noise, and that the CPH tone was louder than the RPH tone. The difference in loudness was larger at medium than at low levels and was only slightly reduced by the addition of a noise intended to mask combination tones. The differences in loudness were slightly smaller for the higher than for the lower F0. In the second experiment, the stimuli with the lower F0s were used as forward maskers of a 20-ms sinusoid, presented at various frequencies within the spectral range of the maskers. Results showed that the CPH tone was the least effective forward masker, even though it was the loudest. The differences in effectiveness as forward maskers depended on masker level and signal frequency; in order to produce equal masking, the level of the CPH tone had to be up to 35 dB above that of the RPH tone and the noise. The implications of these results for models of loudness are discussed and a model is presented based on neural activity patterns in the auditory nerve; this predicts the general pattern of loudness matches. It is suggested that the effects observed in the experiments may have been influenced by two factors: cochlear compression and suppression.  相似文献

Two experiments investigated pitch perception for stimuli where the place of excitation was held constant. Experiment 1 used pulse trains in which the interpulse interval alternated between 4 and 6 ms. In experiment 1a these "4-6" pulse trains were bandpass filtered between 3900 and 5300 Hz and presented acoustically against a noise background to normal listeners. The rate of an isochronous pulse train (in which all the interpulse intervals were equal) was adjusted so that its pitch matched that of the "4-6" stimulus. The pitch matches were distributed unimodally, had a mean of 5.7 ms, and never corresponded to either 4 or to 10 ms (the period of the stimulus). In experiment 1b the pulse trains were presented both acoustically to normal listeners and electrically to users of the LAURA cochlear implant, via a single channel of their device. A forced-choice procedure was used to measure psychometric functions, in which subjects judged whether the 4-6 stimulus was higher or lower in pitch than isochronous pulse trains having periods of 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 ms. For both groups of listeners, the point of subjective equality corresponded to a period of 5.6 to 5.7 ms. Experiment 1c confirmed that these psychometric functions were monotonic over the range 4-12 ms. In experiment 2, normal listeners adjusted the rate of an isochronous filtered pulse train to match the pitch of mixtures of pulse trains having rates of F1 and F2 Hz, passed through the same bandpass filter (3900-5400 Hz). The ratio F2/F1 was 1.29 and F1 was either 70, 92, 109, or 124 Hz. Matches were always close to F2 Hz. It is concluded that the results of both experiments are inconsistent with models of pitch perception which rely on higher-order intervals. Together with those of other published data on purely temporal pitch perception, the data are consistent with a model in which only first-order interpulse intervals contribute to pitch, and in which, over the range 0-12 ms, longer intervals receive higher weights than short intervals.  相似文献
