The mechanisms of material ablation and nanoparticle generation from metal samples exposed to intense short laser pulses are experimentally investigated. We performed measurements of the ablated volume using optical microscopy and the analysis of the ablation plume by fast imaging. The results confirm the existence of two distinguished ablation regimes as a function of the laser fluence, and give a deeper insight in the involved physical mechanisms. Thus, both regimes are found to be related to the relative amount of atoms and nanoparticles within the plume. Comparing the results obtained for copper and gold, it is possible to determine the influence of electron-lattice coupling on the sample heat regime and the resulting plume properties.

In this work, we investigated a carbon plasma plume produced by laser ablation of a graphite target in a nitrogen gas environment. The spatial distributions of C and N atoms were measured by time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. The spatial distributions of the relative densities of CN radicals, C2, and C3 molecules were measured using time-resolved emission spectroscopy. We determined that nitrogen gas produced an increase in carbon atom and molecule densities in the ablation plume. It was observed that the addition of RF plasma to the plume increased the CN radicals and C atom densities, and decreased the C2 and C3 molecule densities. The RF plasma changed the evolution of various fractional species of C, N, CN, C2, and C3 in the ablation plume. The chemical reactions with and without RF plasma were explained using the evolution and density of the fractional species of C, N, CN, C2, and C3in the plume. The propagation of LaMnO3 laser ablation plume in oxygen background has been investigated using fast photography of overall visible plume emission and time-resolved optical emission spectroscopy. The plume expansion was studied with ambient oxygen pressures ranging from vacuum level to 100 Pa. Free-expansion, splitting, sharpening and stopping of the plume were observed at different pressures and time delays after the laser pulse. Time-resolved optical emission spectroscopy showed that oxides are mainly formed through reaction of the atomic species ablated from the target with oxygen in the gas-phase. These reactions mainly affect the content of lanthanum oxide in the plume, while emission of manganese oxide is barely observed in all the range of pressure investigated.

The wavelength shift of optical emission from pulsed laser ablation of metal Al in 1atm air has been investigated by using the time-resolved optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The wavelength shift of OES has a second order exponential decay with time and was also found to be significantly influenced by the laser ablated pulse energy. By taking account of the shielding effect of free electrons inside of the plasma plume, the relation between the electron density and wavelength shift has been discussed.

In view of its fundamental interest and relevance to nanoparticle film production, we have characterised the nanoparticle component of the ablation plume generated in femtosecond laser irradiation of metals. The results are compared to those of the ion plume, which is considered as representative of the atomic component. At moderate laser fluences, the angular distributions of both nanoparticle and ionic components were studied by measuring the spatial distribution of deposition on a transparent substrate and with a planar Langmuir probe, respectively. Our results show that both angular profiles of the plume components can be described by Anisimov model of isentropic expansion. As the laser fluence is increased above a value of several times the ablation threshold, the shape of the nanoparticle angular distribution progressively differs from the Anisimov prediction, contrary to what is observed for the ion component. This effect is interpreted in terms of the influence of the pressure exerted by the nascent atomic plasma plume on the initial hydrodynamic evolution of nanoparticle material.

Nanostructured CdS and ZnS films on Si (100) substrates were obtained by nanosecond pulsed laser deposition at the wavelengths of 266 and 532 nm. The effect of laser irradiation wavelength on the surface structure and crystallinity of deposits was characterized, together with the composition, expansion dynamics and thermodynamic parameters of the ablation plume. Deposits were analyzed by environmental scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction, while in situ monitoring of the plume was carried out with spectral, temporal and spatial resolution by optical emission spectroscopy. The deposits consist of 25–50 nm nanoparticle assembled films but ablation in the visible results in larger aggregates (150 nm) over imposed on the film surface. The aggregate free films grown at 266 nm on heated substrates are thicker than those grown at room temperature and in the former case they reveal a crystalline structure congruent with that of the initial target material. The observed trends are discussed in reference to the light absorption step, the plasma composition and the nucleation processes occurring on the substrate.

The production of nanoparticles via femtosecond laser ablation of gold and copper is investigated experimentally involving measurements of the ablated mass, plasma diagnostics, and analysis of the nanoparticle size distribution. The targets were irradiated under vacuum with a spot of uniform energy distribution. Only a few laser pulses were applied to each irradiation site to make sure that the plume expansion dynamics were not altered by the depth of the laser-produced crater. Under these conditions, the size distribution of nanoparticles does not exhibit a maximum and the particle abundance monotonously decreases with size. Furthermore, the results indicate that two populations of nanoparticles exist within the plume: small clusters that are more abundant in the fast frontal plume component and larger particles that are located mostly at the back. It is shown that the ablation efficiency is strongly related to the presence of nanoparticles in the plume.

Thin films of La0.6Ca0.4CoO3 were grown by pulsed laser ablation with nanosecond and femtosecond pulses. The films deposited with femtosecond pulses (248 nm, 500 fs pulse duration) exhibit a higher surface roughness and deficiency in the cobalt content compared to the films deposited with nanosecond pulses (248 nm, 20 ns pulse duration). The origin of these pronounced differences between the films grown by ns and fs ablation has been studied in detail by time-resolved optical emission spectroscopy and imaging. The plumes generated by nanosecond and femtosecond ablation were analyzed in vacuum and in a background pressure of 60 Pa of oxygen. The ns-induced plume in vacuum exhibits a spherical shape, while for femtosecond ablation the plume is more elongated along the expansion direction, but with similar velocities for ns and fs laser ablation. In the case of ablation in the background gas similar velocities of the plume species are observed for fs and ns laser ablation. The different film compositions are therefore not related to different kinetic energies and different distributions of various species in the plasma plume which has been identified as the origin of the deficiency of species for other materials.

We present results acquired by using in-situ diagnostics based on atomic and molecular oxygen absorption spectroscopy during laser ablation in the presence of an O2 environment. Our investigation provides detailed space- and time-resolved information on the relative density of atomic and molecular oxygen in the plume, and demonstrates a strong correlation between their behavior. The results shed light on the occurrence of reactive-collisional processes involving the ablated material and the environment, leading to O2 dissociation.

We numerically examine the mechanisms involved in nanoparticle formation by laser ablation of metallic targets in vacuum and in liquid. We consider the very early ablation stage providing initial conditions for much longer plume expansion processes. In the case of ultrashort laser ablation, the initial population of primary nanoparticles is formed at this stage. When a liquid is present, the dynamics of the laser plume expansion differs from that in vacuum. Low compressibility of the ambient liquid results in strong confinement conditions. As a result, ablation threshold rises drastically, the ablated material is compressed, part of it becomes supersaturated and the backscattered material additionally heats the target. The extension of a molten layer leads to the additional ablation at a later stage also favoring nanoparticle formation. The obtained results thus explain recent experimental findings and help to predict the role of the experimental parameters. The performed analysis indicates ways of a control over nanoparticle synthesis.

We studied evolution of femtosecond laser ablation by employing novel method of time-resolved off-axis digital holographic microscopy. Phase and amplitude profiles of early shock front and ablation plume dynamics of irradiated tempered steel were reconstructed from the digital holograms. In order to gain additional information, digital holographic microscopy was combined with plasma emission imaging. By using both techniques simultaneously we studied material response to multi-pulse irradiation, shock wave propagation, ablation plume formation and plasma emission. The significant changes in ablation performance were observed when using multi-pulse irradiation if compared to widely investigated single-shot regime.

The laser ablation of Ge and GaAs targets placed in water and ethanol was carried out using the fundamental radiation of nanosecond Nd:YLF laser. The results of preparation and the optical and nonlinear optical characterization of the Ge and GaAs nanoparticle suspensions are presented. The considerable shift of the band gap energy of the nanoparticles compared to the bulk semiconductors was observed. The distribution of nanoparticle sizes was estimated in the range of 1.5-10 nm on the basis of the TEM and spectral measurements. The nonlinear refractive indices and nonlinear absorption coefficients of Ge and GaAs nanoparticles were defined by the z-scan technique using second harmonic radiation of picosecond Nd:YAG laser (λ = 532 nm).

We have carried out a systematic investigation of laser ablation plume interactions in resonant infrared matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation. The laser source utilized in this study was a mid-infrared OPO capable of dual sequential ns pulses with adjustable delay ranging from 1 to 100 μs. This unique capability enabled us both to probe the ablation plume with a second laser pulse, and to effectively double the laser fluence. The primary ablation target used for this study consisted of poly(methyl methacrylate) dissolved in a binary mixture of methanol and toluene. Both the critical thermodynamic and optical properties of the binary mixture were determined and used to interpret our results. We found that deposition rates associated with single pulse irradiation tracks with the optical absorption coefficient in the spectral range from 2,700 to 3,800 nm. In the case of dual sequential pulses, discrepancies in this trend have been linked to the rate of change in the optical absorption coefficient with temperature. The influence of fluence on deposition rate was found to follow a sigmoidal dependence. Surface roughness was observed to have a diametrically opposed trend with pulse delay depending on whether the OH or CH vibrational mode was excited. In the case of CH excitation, we suggest that the rougher films are due to the absorbance of the second pulse by droplets within the plume containing residual solvent which leads to the formation of molecular balloons and hence irregularly shaped features on the substrate.

In this work, we study the application of ultrafast pulsed laser deposition (PLD) in ZnO nanomaterial synthesis, including nanoparticles and nanorods. PLD using long pulse (nanosecond) lasers has been widely used as a method for growing prototype materials. The recently-emerged ultrafast PLD is expected to be able to overcome the problem of large liquid droplet formation. Using near infrared and femtosecond laser pulses in ablation, we first characterize the ablation plume using a Langmuir probe and plasma optical emission spectroscopy. We then examine the structural properties of the nanoparticles generated during low-fluence ablation. Finally, we demonstrate that using nanoparticle aggregates as templates, assisted by plume-excited nitrogen radicals at a high fluence, high quality ZnO nanorods can be grown free of metal catalysts.

Ablation of pentafluorophenylazide (FPA) in an Ar matrix at 8–10 K was carried out upon irradiation with ns-pulsed UV lasers in a vacuum. The plume of ablated products was monitored by a time-resolved imaging/spectroscopic technique using a gated and intensified CCD camera system. A large amount of pentafluorophenylnitrene (FPN) having a high kinetic energy (≈6 eV) was ejected as fragments from the matrix film during ablation. A quantitative formation of triplet FPN from the photolysis of the FPA was observed by spectroscopic measurements in the IR and UV-visible regions, and was confirmed by a theoretical IR spectrum calculated according to density functional theory. A FPN beam is useful for chemical surface modification of organic materials, such as aromatic polyester and alkylthiol. A surface analysis of these materials by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy showed that the FPN was immobilized onto the surface through chemical bonds. This technique for the chemical surface modification of materials is made possible by a pulsed beam of reactive fragments with a high density in the laser ablation process. Pulsed laser ablation (PLA) in the liquid phase was successfully employed to synthesize calcium tungstate (CaWO4) nanocolloidal suspension. The crystalline phase, particle morphology and laser ablation mechanism for the colloidal nanoparticles were investigated using XRD, TEM and SEM. The obtained colloidal suspension consisted of well-dispersed CaWO4 nanoparticles which showed a spherical shape with sizes ranging from 5 to 30 nm. The laser ablation and the nanoparticle forming process were discussed under consideration of the photo-ablation mechanism, where the nanoparticles were generated by rapid condensation of the plume in high pressured ethanol vapor. The optical properties of the prepared CaWO4 colloidal nanoparticles were analyzed in detail using XPS, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and PL spectrophotometry. The optical band gap was estimated by Tauc and Menths law. PACS 42.62.-b; 82.70.Dd; 78.55.Hx; 81.07.Wx  相似文献

By adopting a fast photography and time-resolved optical emission spectrometry, we have investigated the effects of transverse magnetic field on the expansion dynamics and enrichment of Zn atoms and Zn+ ions in a plume produced by laser ablation of a Zn target in oxygen atmosphere. Plume splitting due to the magnetic field was apparent but the splitting patterns of Zn and Zn+ were totally different. The surface morphology and photoluminescence characteristics also changed significantly. In particular, the growth rate increased by as much as 2.4-4.3 times compared to the conventional PLD method.

We report an experimental analysis of the plasma plume produced during ultrafast laser ablation of a copper target, in high vacuum. The plasma plume optical emission is studied by using a hybrid time-gated imaging technique which allows obtaining simultaneous information on the spectral and spatial characteristics of the emitting species. We used both single and double pulse ablation scheme, observing their influence on the characteristics of the ablated atomic species.
