A photonic crystal (PhC) nanocavity formed in an optically very thick slab can support reasonably high-Q modes for lasing. Experimentally, we demonstrate room-temperature pulsed lasing operation from the PhC dipole mode emitting at 1324 nm, which is fabricated in an InGaAsP slab with thickness (T) of 606 nm. Numerical simulation reveals that when T≥800 nm, over 90% of the laser output power couples to the PhC slab modes, suggesting a new route toward an efficient in-plane laser for photonic integrated circuits.  相似文献

Using the formalism of the effective Hamiltonian, we consider bound states in a continuum (BIC). They are nonhermitian effective Hamiltonian eigenstates that have real eigenvalues. It is shown that BICs are orthogonal to open channels of the leads, i.e., disconnected from the continuum. As a result, BICs can be superposed to a transport solution with an arbitrary coefficient and exist in a propagation band. The one-dimensional Aharonov-Bohm rings that are opened by attaching single-channel leads to them allow exact consideration of BICs. BICs occur at discrete values of the energy and magnetic flux; however, it’s realization strongly depends on the way to the BIC point. The text was submitted by the authors in English.  相似文献

A lasing condition is formulated in matrix form for optically anisotropic thin films. Lasing behavior of liquid-crystal slabs is analyzed. In particular, it is shown that if the spatial extent of a liquid crystal slab is much larger than its thickness, then laser emission is feasible not only along the normal to the slab, but also in the entire angular sector. The generated laser light can be observed experimentally as a spot or as concentric rings on a screen. The lowest lasing threshold corresponds to in-plane sliding modes leaking into the substrate. The feedback required for lasing is provided by reflection from the interfaces, rather than edges, of the liquid-crystal slab operating as a planar Fabry-Perot cavity. For cholesteric liquid crystals, it is shown that energy loss to the sliding modes leaking into the substrates and escaping through their edges is a key factor that limits the efficiency of band-edge emission along the normal to the slab.  相似文献

Transport properties are investigated through a crossbar‐shaped structure formed by a quantum dot (QD) coupled to two normal leads and embedded between two 1D topological superconductors (TSCs). Each TSC hosts Majorana‐bound states (MBSs) at its ends, which can interact between them with an effective coupling strength. A signature of bound states in continuum (BIC) is found in the MBSs spectral function. By allowing finite inter MBSs coupling, BICs splitting is observed and shows projection in transmission for asymmetric coupling case as quasi‐BICs. As a consequence, it is also shown that the Fano effect, arising from interference phenomena between MBSs hybridization trough QD, is observed with a half‐integer amplitude modulation. It is believed that the findings can help to better understand the properties of MBSs and their interplay with QDs.  相似文献

We present theoretical and experimental results of a polarization splitter device that consists of a photonic crystal (PhC) slab, which exhibits a large reflection coefficient for TE and a high transmission coefficient for TM polarization. The slab is embedded in a PhC tile operating in the self-collimation mode. Embedding the polarization-discriminating slab in a PhC with identical lattice symmetry suppresses the in-plane diffraction losses at the PhC-non-PhC interface. The optimization of the PhC-non-PhC interface is thereby decoupled from the optimization of the polarizing function. Transmissions as high as 35% for TM- and 30% for TE-polarized light are reported.  相似文献

We demonstrate multiwavelength lasing of resonant modes in linear (L3) microcavities in a triangular-lattice 2D photonic crystal (PC) slab. The broad spontaneous emission spectrum from coupled quantum dots, modified by the PC microcavity, is studied as a function of the intensity of incident optical excitation. We observe lasing with an ultralow-threshold power of approximately 600 nW and an output efficiency of approximately 3% at threshold. Two other resonant modes exhibit weaker turnon characteristics and thresholds of approximately 2.5 and 200 microW, respectively.  相似文献

The dual-channel nearly perfect absorption is realized by the coupled modes of topological interface states (TIS) in the near-infrared range. An all-dielectric layered heterostructure composed of photonic crystals (PhC)/graphene/PhC/graphene/PhC on GaAs substrate is proposed to excite the TIS at the interface of adjacent PhC with opposite topological properties. Based on finite element method (FEM) and transfer matrix method (TMM), the dual-channel absorption can be modulated by the periodic number of middle PhC, Fermi level of graphene, and angle of incident light (TE and TM polarizations). Especially, by fine-tuning the Fermi level of graphene around 0.4 eV, the absorption of both channels can be switched rapidly and synchronously. This design is hopefully integrated into silicon-based chips to control light.  相似文献

We report that unidirectional lasing emission can be generated from a rounded isosceles triangular microcavity within a low nkD range, where n is the refractive index, k is the vacuum wave number, and D is the characteristic size of the microcavity. It is shown that unidirectional resonance modes have relatively high-Q values and in a nonlinear dynamic model appear as stationary lasing solutions with a low threshold. The formation of a whispering-gallery-type pattern along the rounded part on the symmetry axis is responsible for the unidirectionality of the resonances.  相似文献

A lateral cavity photonic crystal (PhC) surface-emitting laser is realized on a commercial epitaxial waveguide wafer without a distributed Bragg reflector first. Energy is coupled from the lateral resonance to surface-emitting light through the Γ band edge of the PhC with a square lattice. Electrically driven 1553.8?nm surface-emitting lasing action is observed at room temperature. The threshold current density of 667?A/cm2 is ultralow for the surface-emitting laser.  相似文献

We show the existence of new stable ringlike localized scalar field configurations whose stability is due to a combination of topological and nontopological charges. In that sense these defects may be called semitopological. These rings are Noether charged and also carry Noether current (they are superconducting). They are local minima of the energy in scalar field theories with an unbroken U(1) global symmetry. We obtain numerical solutions of the field configuration corresponding to large rings and derive virial theorems demonstrating their stability. We also derive the minimum energy field configurations in 3D and simulate the evolution of a finite size Q ring on a three dimensional lattice.  相似文献

The evolution of polarization singularities supported in a one-dimensional periodic plasmonic system is studied. The lateral inversion symmetry of the system, which breaks the in-plane inversion symmetry and up-down mirror symmetry simultaneously, yields abundant polarization states. A complete evolution process with geometry for the polarization states is traced. In the evolution, circularly polarized points (C points) can stem from 3 different processes. In addition to the previously reported processes occurring in an isolated band, a new type of C point appearing in two bands simultaneously due to the avoided band crossing, is observed. Unlike the dielectric system with a similar structure which only supports at-$\varGamma$ bound states in the continuum (BICs), accidental BICs off the $\varGamma$ point are realized in this plasmonic system. This work provides a new scheme of polarization manipulation for the plasmonic systems.  相似文献

We studied numerically and experimentally the effects of structural disorder on the performance of ultraviolet photonic crystal slab lasers. Optical gain selectively amplifies the high-quality modes of the passive system. For these modes, the in-plane and out-of-plane leakage rates may be automatically balanced in the presence of disorder. The spontaneous optimization of in-plane and out-of-plane confinement of light in a photonic crystal slab may lead to a reduction of the lasing threshold.  相似文献

Results of the self-consistent comprehensive analysis of a room-temperature operation of InP-based 1300-nm AlInGaAs photonic-crystal (PhC) VCSELs are presented. In particular, an influence of PhC parameters on thermal effects within VCSEL volume and its emission wavelength are analysed. The PhC has been found to introduce a number of opposite effects including a possible light leakage through PhC holes. From one side, PhC holes make more difficult heat-flux extraction from VCSEL volume leading to higher temperature increases within it. But, from the other side, a properly manufactured PhC creates an efficient radial confinement mechanism for VCSEL radiation field. It enhances an interaction between the field and the active-region carriers leading to a decrease in both the VCSEL lasing threshold and temperature increases. Seemingly both effects may similarly affect VCSEL operation, but our analysis revealed, that thermal properties of the PhC VCSEL are mainly dependent on an efficient confinement of its radiation field within the active region impeding a mode leakage through PhC holes, whereas an importance of deterioration of heat-flux extraction from VCSEL volume is much less essential. The wavelength shift induced by a change of PhC parameters has been found not to exceed 4×10−3 μm.  相似文献

A theory of photonic crystal (PhC) slabs is described, which relies on an expansion in the basis of guided modes of an effective homogeneous waveguide and on treating the coupling to radiative modes and the resulting losses by perturbation theory. The following applications are discussed for the case of a high-index membrane: gap maps for photonic lattices in a waveguide; exciton–polariton states, when the PhC slab contains a quantum well with an excitonic resonance; propagation losses of line-defect modes in W1 waveguides, also in the presence of disorder; the quality factors of photonic nanocavities. In particular, we predict that disorder-induced losses below 0.2 dB/mm can be achieved in state-of-the-art samples by increasing the channel width of W1 waveguides.  相似文献

Enhanced third harmonic (TH) generation from Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) planar waveguides as well as SOI photonic crystal (PhC) slabs is studied in different angular configurations, both in the visible and infrared energy ranges. In the SOI planar waveguide, the multilayer structure causes the optical properties such as TH reflection to be different from those of bulk silicon samples. This behavior is well reproduced by calculations of TH reflectance.Measurements of third-harmonic reflection and diffraction from one-dimensional PhC slabs etched in the SOI waveguide are also reported. The angular positions of TH peaks at various diffraction orders agree well with those calculated from a nonlinear grating equation. Both reflection and diffraction processes contribute to enhanced TH generation efficiency in the PhC slabs.TH reflectance measurements performed on PhC slabs in the near infrared show a resonant interaction between the incident beam and the photonic structure, dependent on the angle of incidence. This leads to a nonlinear conversion efficiency which is strongly enhanced with respect to that of the SOI waveguide, due to the excitation of strong local fields associated with the presence of photonic modes in the PhC slab.  相似文献

Lasing mechanism in two-dimensional photonic crystal lasers   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We conduct a comprehensive investigation of the lasing mechanism in a photonic crystal slab laser with a refractive index that is periodic in two dimensions. Experimental spectra of laser structures fabricated with organic gain media are presented. It is found that lasing frequencies can be explained in terms of Van Hove singularities in the density of modes. We also observe lasing spectra that cannot be obtained from structures with one-dimensional periodicity, such as traditional distributed feedback lasers. 基于速率方程和Maxwell方程相结合的模型,采用时域有限差分法(FDTD)研究了介质的随机性和层数对部分随机介质激光器阈值的影响.模拟结果显示,当抽运速率超过阈值时,出现一个或者多个振荡模;随机性或者系统的尺度增加时,振荡模数量也增加;部分随机介质激光器的阈值在一定的随机强度和层数下将达到最小值,它与完全随机情况下的结论有所不同.对所得到的结论给出了物理解释.这些结果对于制作随机激光器和光集成潜在应用价值. 关键词: 激光物理 随机激光器 阈值 时域有限差分法  相似文献
