The stable isotopic composition (delta(2)H and delta(18)O) of short-term (daily) precipitation collected from October 2002 to September 2003 at two stations in a coastal, karstic area in south-western Slovenia was investigated. In addition, monthly composite samples were collected and analysed for comparison with amount-weighted monthly means. The delta(2)H and delta(18)O values obtained show a wide range and reflect seasonal climatic variations. Deuterium excess and local meteoric water lines (LMWLs) were determined and cumulative frequency analysis and coincidence tests were performed. The statistical coincidence test showed that the LMWLs calculated from monthly data for Portoroz and Kozina are coincident, but the LMWLs calculated from daily precipitation events are not. This difference could be explained by the greater variance of the isotopic composition of daily precipitation in comparison to monthly composite samples and also to the influence of evaporation during events below<1 mm at Portoroz during the extremely dry and warm spring-summer season of 2003. Finally, synoptic maps and backward trajectories of a selected precipitation event showed that changes of isotopic composition are related to mixing of air masses originating from the continent and Mediterranean cyclogenesis.  相似文献

The stable isotope composition of hydrogen (delta(2)H) and oxygen (delta(18)O) in monthly precipitation and river water (Sava River and Danube) samples in the Belgrade area gathered between 1992 and 2005 are determined. The local meteoric water line delta(2)H=7.8 (+/-0.2) delta(18)O+7.3(+/-1.6) (r(2)=0.98, n=60, sigma=0.52) for the whole period of observation is close to the global meteoric water line. The amount-weighted mean delta(2)H and delta(18)O values of precipitation were-65+/-27 per thousand and-9.4+/-3.4 per thousand, respectively. Good correlation between delta(18)O values (r approximately >0.67) and ambient temperature and relative humidity was obtained. Stream-water data ranged from-94 to-60 per thousand for delta(2)H and from-11.0 to approximately 5.7 per thousand for delta(18)O with highly statistically significant difference (p>0.01) between the Sava River and the Danube. In addition, the isotopic compositions of local precipitation and adjacent river water at monitoring sites were compared. Obtained data will give an opportunity to improve the knowledge of mixing stream water and local groundwater, and assessment of potential groundwater risks and pressures in the Belgrade basin.  相似文献

Stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen were used to examine how the isotopic signal of meteoric water is modified as it travels through soil and epikarst into two caves in Florida. Surface and cave water samples were collected every week from February 2006 until March 2007. The isotopic composition of precipitation at the investigated sites is highly variable and shows little seasonal control. The delta18O vs. delta2H plot shows a mixing line having a slope of 5.63, suggesting evaporation effects dominate the isotopic composition of most rainfall events of less than 8 cm/day, as indicated by their low d-excess values. The delta18O values of the drip water show little variability (<0.6 per thousand), which is loosely tied to local variations in the seasonal amount of precipitation. This is only seen during wintertime at the Florida Caverns site. The lag time of over two months and the lack of any relationship between rainfall amount and the increase in drip rate indicate a dominance of matrix flow relative to fracture/conduit flow at each site. The long residence time of the vadose seepage waters allows for an effective isotopic homogenisation of individual and seasonal rainfall events. We find no correlation between rainfall and drip water delta18O at any site. The isotopic composition of drip water in both caves consistently tends to resemble the amount-weighted monthly mean rainfall input. This implies that the delta18O of speleothems from these two caves in Florida cannot record seasonal cycle in rainfall delta18O, but are suitable for paleoclimate reconstructions at inter-annual time scales.dagger.  相似文献

Abstract

The stable isotope composition of hydrogen (δ2H) and oxygen (δ18O) in monthly precipitation and river water (Sava River and Danube) samples in the Belgrade area gathered between 1992 and 2005 are determined. The local meteoric water line δ2H=7.8 (±0.2) δ18O+7.3(±1.6) (r 2=0.98, n=60, σ=0.52) for the whole period of observation is close to the global meteoric water line. The amount-weighted mean δ2H and δ18O values of precipitation were?65±27 ‰ and?9.4±3.4 ‰, respectively. Good correlation between δ18O values (r>rsim0.67) and ambient temperature and relative humidity was obtained. Stream-water data ranged from?94 to?60 ‰ for δ2H and from?11.0 to ~5.7 ‰ for δ18O with highly statistically significant difference (p>0.01) between the Sava River and the Danube. In addition, the isotopic compositions of local precipitation and adjacent river water at monitoring sites were compared. Obtained data will give an opportunity to improve the knowledge of mixing stream water and local groundwater, and assessment of potential groundwater risks and pressures in the Belgrade basin.  相似文献

An isotopic monitoring was undertaken in 2012–2014 at Lake ?abińskie (Mazurian Lakeland, NE Poland). The aim was to identify the factors and processes controlling an isotopic composition of the lake water and to explore the mechanism responsible for recording the climatic signal in stable isotope composition of deposited carbonates. δ18O and δ2H in the precipitation, lake water column, inflows and outflow, δ18O and δ13C in the carbonate fraction of sediments trapped in the water column were recorded with monthly resolution. A relationship between δ18O and δ2H in local precipitation was used to estimate the local meteoric water line. The dataset obtained for the water enabled to identify the modification of the water’s isotopic composition due to evaporation, connected with seasonal lake water stratification and mixing patterns. Statistically significant correlation coefficients suggest that the δ18O of the carbonate fraction in the sediment traps depends on the δ18O of rainfall water and on air temperature. The fractionation coefficient α shows that in summer months the carbonate precipitation process is closest to equilibrium. As expected for an exorheic lake, no significant correlation was observed between δ18O and δ13C in precipitated carbonate.  相似文献

By using 233 isotope samples, we investigated the spatial and temporal variations of δ18O and δ2H in precipitation and surface water, and the contribution of different water sources in the rivers within the Tarim River Basin (TRB), which receives snow/glacier meltwater, groundwater, and rainfall. Our study revealed a similar seasonal pattern of precipitation δ18O and δ2H at both the north and south edges of the basin, indicating the dominant effect of westerly air masses in the summer and the combined influence of westerly and polar air masses during the winter, although the southern part showed more complex precipitation processes in the summer. River water in the basin has relatively large temporal variations in both δ18O and δ2H showing a distinct seasonal pattern with lower isotope values in May than in September. Higher d-excess values throughout the year in the Aksu river and the Tizinafu river suggest that water may be intensively recycled in the mountains of the TRB. Based on isotopic hydrograph separation, we found that groundwater is the main water source that discharges the entire basin although individual rivers vary.  相似文献

For certain remote areas like Mongolia, field-based precipitation, surface and ground water isotopic data are scarce. So far no such data exist for the Mongolian Gobi desert, which hinders the understanding of isotopic fractionation processes in this extreme, arid region. We collected 26 event-based precipitation samples, 39 Bij river samples, and 75 samples from other water bodies in the Dzungarian Gobi in SW Mongolia over a period of 16 months for hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope analysis. δ2H and δ18O values in precipitation show high seasonal variation and cover an extreme range: 175?‰ for δ2H and 24?‰ for δ18O values. The calculated local meteoric water line (LMWL) shows the isotopic characteristics of precipitation in an arid region. Individual water samples fall into one of three groups: within, above or below the 95?% confidence interval of LMWL. Data presented provide a basis for future studies in this region.  相似文献

Stable carbon and oxygen isotope analyses were conducted on pedogenic needle fibre calcite (NFC) from seven sites in areas with roughly similar temperate climates in Western Europe, including the Swiss Jura Mountains, eastern and southern France, northern Wales, and north-eastern Spain. The δ13C values (?12.5 to?6.8 ‰ Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB)) record the predominant C3 vegetation cover at the sites. A good correlation was found between mean monthly climatic parameters (air temperature, number of frost days, humidity, and precipitation) and δ18O values (?7.8 to?3.4‰ VPDB) of all the NFC. Similar seasonal variations of δ18O values for monthly NFC samples from the Swiss sites and those of mean monthly δ18O values of local precipitation and meteorological data point out precipitation and preferential growth/or recrystallisation of the pedogenic needle calcite during dry seasons. These covariations indicate the potential of stable isotope compositions of preserved NFC in fossil soil horizons as a promising tool for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.  相似文献

Results of stable isotope measurements (δ2H, δ18O) of daily grab samples, taken from the Danube River at Tulln (river km 1963) during 2012, show seasonal and short-term variations depending on the climatic/hydrological conditions and changes in the catchment area (temperature changes, heavy rains and snow melt processes). Isotope ratios in river water clearly reflect the isotopic composition of precipitation water in the catchment area since evaporation influences play a minor role. Average δ2H and δ18O values in 2012 are?78‰ and?11.0‰, respectively, deuterium excess averages 10‰. The entire variation amounts to 1.8‰ in δ18O and 15‰ in δ2H. Quick changes of the isotopic composition within a few days emphasise the necessity of daily sampling for the investigation of hydrological events, while monthly grab sampling seems sufficient for the investigation of long-term hydro-climatic trends. 3H results show peaks (half-width 1–2 days, up to about 150 TU) exceeding the regional environmental level of about 9 TU, probably due to releases from nuclear power plants.  相似文献

The 18O/16O and 2H/1H ratios of 18 water brands representing the most popular bottled water brands in the Saudi market were measured using a system based on the latest advancements in tunable off-axis integrated cavity output diode laser spectroscopy (OA-ICOS) in the near-infrared spectral region. Utilizing δ18O and the δ2H values of locally produced water samples, a meteoric water line (δ2H?=?7.84 δ18O?+?2.11) was extracted and found to be consistent with the slope of the global meteoric water line (GMWL) and the geographic location of Saudi Arabia.  相似文献

Karst springs of the Zagros Mountains contribute a significant amount to agricultural and human water demands of western and south-western Iran. For an adequate management of available water resources in semi-arid and arid regions, sufficient hydrological monitoring is needed, and hydro-chemical and isotope hydrological data provide important additional information. About 350 water samples were collected from precipitation, river water, and karst springs of the upper part of the Karkheh River Basin (20,895 km2) located between 33°35 and 34°55 North and 46°22 and 49°10 East with elevations ranging from 928 to 3563 m above sea level. Sampling was conducted in monthly time resolution from August 2011 to July 2012. All samples were analysed for hydro-chemical parameters (pH, electrical conductivity, and major ions) and stable isotopes (deuterium, oxygen-18). Isotope values of precipitation indicate a local meteoric water line (Zagros MWL δ2H=6.8 δ18O+10.1; R2=0.99) situated between the Mediterranean MWL and Global MWL. Spring and river water isotope values vary between?7.1 and?4.1 ‰, and?38 and?25 ‰ for δ18O and δ2H, respectively, responding to winter snowmelt and evaporation. This work implements stable isotopes and hydro-chemical information of springs and river water to understand hydrological and hydro-geological interrelations in karstic semi-arid areas and helps to improve the current water resources management practices of western Iran.  相似文献

Tropical rainfall isotopic composition results from complex processes. The climatological and environmental variability in East Africa increases this complexity. Long rainfall isotope datasets are needed to fill the lack of observations in this region. At Kisiba Masoko, Tanzania, rainfall and rain isotopic composition have been monitored during 6 years. Mean year profiles allow to analyse the seasonal variations. The mean annual rainfall is 2099?mm with a rain-weighted mean composition of ?3.2?‰ for δ18O and ?11.7?‰ for δ2H. The results are consistent with available data although they present their own specificity. Thus, if the local meteoric water line is δ2H?=?8.6 δ18O?+?14.8, two seasonal lines are observed. The seasonality of the isotopic composition in rain and deuterium excess has been compared with precipitating air masses backtracking trajectories to characterize a simple scheme of vapour histories. The three major oceanic sources have two moisture signatures with their own trajectory histories: one originated from the tropical Indian Ocean at the beginning of the rainy season and one from the Austral Ocean at its end. The presented isotopic seasonality depends on the balance of the intertropical front and provides a useful dataset to improve the knowledge about local processes.  相似文献

Monthly sets of discrete air samples were collected from September 2004 to June 2005 in the town of Parma, along North-South and East-West runs (8 plus 8 samples), using four-litre Pyrex flasks. The CO2 concentrations and delta13C values were determined on these samples with the aim of evaluating quantitatively the contribution of domestic heating to the winter atmospheric CO2 pollution in downtown Parma by comparing autumn and spring atmospheric values with winter values. After separation of CO2 from the other air gases in the laboratory, the CO2 concentrations were calculated from the intensity of the 12C16O2+ ion beam in the mass spectrometer, after calibration with artificial air samples whose CO2 concentration was very carefully determined by the Monte Cimone Observatory (Sestola, Modena, Italy). The reproducibility of these measurements was of approximately +/-0.4 % and, consequently, the most probable error is not higher than+/-2-3 ppmv and does not affect the magnitude of the gradients between different samples. The standard deviation of delta13C measurements ranges from+/-0.02 to +/-0.04 per thousand (1sigma). The results suggest that the contribution of domestic heating to atmospheric CO2 pollution is almost negligible in the case of ground level atmosphere, where the main CO2 pollution is essentially related to the heavy car traffic. This is probably because of the fact that the gases from the domestic heating systems are discharged tens of metres above ground level at a relatively high temperature so that they rise quickly to the upper atmospheric layers and are then displaced by air masses dynamics. Monthly sets of discrete air samples were also collected from October 2004 to June 2005 along North-South runs from the town of Parma to the Apennine ridge following the Parma and the Taro river valleys (8 samples and 7 samples per set, respectively) and measured using the same technique. The aim of this study was the comparison between the town samples, the plain country samples and the samples collected on the northern slope of the Apennines. The results reveal huge variations of both CO2 concentration and delta13C through space and time, some of which can be reasonably explained whereas others are rather difficult to understand. The sets of values are discussed and various hypotheses are suggested.  相似文献

Based on Global Network Isotopes in Precipitation (GNIP) isotopic data set, a review of the spatial and temporal variability of δ18O and δ2H in precipitation was conducted throughout central and eastern Brazil, indicating that dynamic interactions between Intertropical and South Atlantic Convergence Zones, Amazon rainforest, and Atlantic Ocean determine the variations on the isotopic composition of precipitation over this area. Despite the seasonality and latitude effects observed, a fair correlation with precipitation amount was found. In addition, Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) air mass back trajectories were used to quantify the factors controlling daily variability in stable isotopes in precipitation. Through a linear multiple regression analysis, it was observed that temporal variations were consistent with the meteorological parameters derived from HYSPLIT, particularly precipitation amount along the trajectory and mix depth, but are not dependent on vapour residence time in the atmosphere. These findings also indicate the importance of convective systems to control the isotopic composition of precipitation in tropical and subtropical regions.  相似文献

This preliminary study was designed to determine the extent to which the carbon isotope ratio in four species of lichens was influenced by such features as humidity, rainfall, radioactivity, and air quality. The sampling sites were selected to be at a great distance from any pollution. At the time of sampling, field data (temperature, relative humidity, average monthly precipitation, and radioactivity) were recorded. delta(13)C in whole lichen specimens were determined using standard mass spectrometric techniques with a standard deviation of+/-0.3 per thousand. We have found a weak but negative correlation between delta(13)C and relative humidity, and a positive correlation between delta(13)C and average monthly precipitation at the studied sites. The effects were minor, of the order of 1.5 per thousand for all the lichens. We have examined the correlation between (137)Cs activity concentration of the studied lichens and delta(13)C of these lichens, and we have suggested that fixation of radiocesium does not alter photosynthesis rate. There was a delta(13)C variation with the altitude gradient with less negative delta(13)C values at higher altitude. It is possible that this difference is caused by the ozone and occurred at the high elevations.  相似文献

The stable isotopic compositions of all major daily rain fall samples (n?=?113) collected from Kozhikode station in Kerala, India, for the year 2010 representing the pre-monsoon, southwest and northeast monsoon seasons are examined. The isotopic variations δ18O, δ2H and d-excess in daily rainfall ranged from δ18O: ?4.4 to 2?‰, δ2H: ?25.3 to 13.8?‰, and d-excess: ?2.4 to 15.3?‰; δ18O: ?9.7 to ?0.6?‰, δ2H: ?61.7 to 5.3?‰, and d-excess 5.8 to 17.4?‰; δ18O ?11.3 to ?1.4?‰, δ2H: ?75.3 to 0.9?‰, and d-excess: 8.8 to 21.3?‰ during the pre-, southwest and northeast monsoon periods, respectively. Thus, daily rainfall events during two monsoon periods had a distinct range of isotopic variations. The daily rain events within the two monsoon seasons also exhibited periodic variations. The isotopic composition of rain events during pre-monsoon and a few low-intensity events during the southwest monsoon period had imprints of secondary evaporation. This study analysing the stable isotopic characteristics of individual rain events in southern India, which is influenced by dual monsoon rainfall, will aid in a better understanding of its mechanism.  相似文献

The present study examines the isotopic and hydrochemical composition of 18 inland spring waters and 3 coastal karstic spring waters, covering the period between October 2005 and March 2008. The stable isotopes ((18)O, (2)H) processing has revealed the absence of significant evaporation phenomena and that the origin of fresh water samples is meteoric. Using (18)O values in rainfall waters, an average line of isotopic depletion with altitude has been constructed, extracting a rate of-0.45‰/100?m as typical for the study area. Furthermore, the mean altitude of recharge of the springs has been estimated by plotting the groundwater sampling points on a δ(18)O versus altitude diagram. Hydrochemistry results have shown that the dissolution of carbonate, flysch and ophiolitic formations defines the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater. Moreover, seawater intrusion in the coastal area is significantly high, causing the water in the three karstic springs to be brackish.  相似文献
