Using the techniques of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and medium energy ion scattering (MEIS), we examine the growth and annealing behaviour of ultrathin Ni films on Au{1 1 1} at 300 K. As has been shown previously, submonolayer growth of Ni on Au{1 1 1} is strongly influenced by the presence of the herringbone reconstruction with two-dimensional clusters nucleating at herringbone elbows. Second layer growth commences prior to the completion of the monolayer. After multiple layers have been deposited, the surface morphology retains a similar cluster-like appearance. Annealing produces surfaces exhibiting long range Moiré structures and, at higher temperature, triangular misfit dislocations. We use MEIS to examine the composition and structure of these surface alloy phases and conclude that in each case, they consist of an essentially pure Au surface layer on a bimetallic second layer.  相似文献

Using the laser post-ionization surface analysis technique, I have for the first time studied angular distributions of Ni and Al atoms sputtered from NiAl{1 1 0}. Emission angular distributions from Ni{1 0 0} have also been measured. I have observed preferential emissions of Ni and Al atoms along 〈1 1 1〉 and 〈1 0 0〉crystallographic directions for NiAl{1 1 0} and of Ni atoms along 〈1 1 0〉 and 〈1 0 0〉 directions for Ni{1 0 0}. The observed preferential ejections can be explained in terms of the theory of focusing-collision sequences. Because of the difference in surface binding energy between Al and Ni atoms, preferential ejection angles of Ni atoms are slightly different from those of Al atoms along the 〈1 1 1〉 ejections. For NiAl, the 〈1 1 1〉 preferential ejections were less prominent than the 〈1 0 0〉 preferential ejections and this can be related to the low efficiency of momentum transfer in Ni-Al collision sequences along 〈1 1 1〉 lattice directions. The low efficiency of momentum transfer due to the mass mismatch can also be responsible for the experimental observation that the preferential ejections in the alloy were less prominent than those in the Ni metal.  相似文献

The co-adsorption of CO and O on the unreconstructed (1 × 1) phase of Ir{1 0 0} was examined by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). When CO is adsorbed at 188 K onto the Ir{1 0 0} surface precovered with 0.5 ML O, a mixed c(4 × 2)-(2O + CO) overlayer is formed. All CO is oxidised upon heating and desorbs as CO2 in three distinct stages at 230 K, 330 K and 430 K in a 2:1:2 ratio. The excess oxygen left on the surface after all CO has reacted forms an overlayer with a LEED pattern with p(2 × 10) periodicity. This overlayer consists of stripes with a local p(2 × 1)-O arrangement of oxygen atoms separated by stripes of uncovered Ir. When CO is adsorbed at 300 K onto the surface precovered with 0.5 ML O an apparent (2 × 2) LEED pattern is observed. LEED IV analysis reveals that this pattern is a superposition of diffraction patterns from islands of c(2 × 2)-CO and p(2  × 1)-O structures on the surface. Heating this co-adsorbed overlayer leads to the desorption of CO2 in two stages at 330 K and 430 K; the excess CO (0.1 ML) desorbs at 590 K.LEED IV structural analysis of the mixed c(4 × 2) O and CO overlayer shows that both the CO molecules and the O atoms occupy bridge sites. The O atoms show significant lateral displacements of 0.14 Å away from the CO molecules; the C-O bond is slightly expanded with respect to the gas phase (1.19 Å); the modifications of the Ir substrate with respect to the bulk-terminated surface are very small.  相似文献

The adsorption and desorption of sulphur on the clean reconstructed Au(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surface has been studied by low energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption. The results obtained show a complex behaviour of the S/Au(1 1 0) system during sulphur desorption at different temperatures. Two structures of the stable ordered sulphur overlayer on the Au(1 1 0) surface, p(4 × 2) and c(4 × 4), were found after annealing the S/Au(1 1 0) system at 630 K and 463 K, respectively. The corresponding sulphur coverage for these overlayers was estimated by AES signal intensity analysis of the Au NOO and S LMM Auger lines to be equal to 0.13 ML and 0.2 ML, respectively. Both sulphur structures appear after removing an excess of sulphur, which mainly desorbs at 358 K as determined from TPD spectra. Furthermore, it was not possible to produce the lower coverage p(4 × 2) sulphur structure by annealing the c(4 × 4) surface. In the case of the p(4 × 2) S overlayer on the Au(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surface it is proposed that the sulphur is attached to “missing row” sites only. The c(4 × 4) S overlayer arises via desorption of S2 molecules that are formed on the surface due to mobility of sulphur atoms after a prolonged anneal.  相似文献

The initial growth and the stability of Fe layers on the Mo(1 1 1) surface was studied with Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy and thermal desorption spectroscopy. At room temperature at least the first two monolayers grow layer-by-layer. The first layer is stable up to about 1200 K. Excess Fe starts to agglomerate at about 400 K and forms with increasing temperature thick flat-top islands which start to sublime at a somewhat below 1200 K. A strong decrease of the adsorption energy with coverage was found in the first monolayer. No {2 1 1} or { 1 1 0} micro-faceting could be seen at any coverage upon annealing.  相似文献

The epitaxial growth of Pd adlayers electrochemically deposited onto Au(1 0 0) has been studied by LEED, RHEED and AES. For the first 6 ML, the Pd deposits grow pseudomorphically on Au(1 0 0) with a lateral expansion of 4.5% with respect to bulk Pd. The strain in the expanded commensurate (1 × 1) Pd layers on Au(1 0 0) begins to be relieved at the Pd coverage between 6 and 9 ML range by formation of a compressed Pd film with respect to Au(1 0 0) surface and the compression increases continuously with thickness. At ca. 20 ML Pd the lattice constant of the film approaches to the bulk Pd and three-dimensional Pd islands develop since around 30 ML coverage. No superstructure due to the Pd-Au surface alloy can be found for coverages from monolayer up to 30 ML Pd on Au(1 0 0). A c(2 × 2) phase has been observed on the Pd-deposited Au(1 0 0) electrodes, which is ascribed to an ordered Cl adlayers adsorbed on Pd adlayers rather than a Pd-Au surface alloy.  相似文献

Electrodeposition is used to produce epitaxial single-crystal films on Au(1 1 1) substrates without annealing or other post-deposition modification. X-ray techniques show that the Bi(0 1 2) plane is parallel to the underlying Au(1 1 1) surface, and the azimuthal orientation of the films is determined. Combination of the X-ray data with in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images suggests a common growth mode from the first few layers up to thick films.  相似文献

Titanium dioxide films were grown on Re(1 0 −1 0) by Ti vapor deposition in oxygen at T = 830 K and studied by means of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy ion scattering (LEIS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Ti oxide stoichiometry was determined by XPS as Ti:O = 1:2, with the Ti oxidation state (4+). The TiO2 growth was monitored by means of LEED as a function of film thickness. Extending the coverage from the submonolayer into the multilayer regime gives rise to a p(2 × 2) pattern, a (poorly ordered) (1 × 1), and, finally, a stable (2 × 2) structure, the latter being associated with a homogeneous TiO2 phase. For normal electron incidence, the (2 × 2) LEED pattern exhibits systematically extinguished beams at (n ± 1/2, 0) positions, indicating a glide mirror plane. The pg(2 × 2) structure could be explained by both a rutile(0 1 1)-(2 × 1) reconstructed surface and a bulk truncated brookite(0 0 1) surface. Faceting phenomena, i.e. running LEED spots, observed with thin TiO2 films point to the formation of a rutile(0 1 1)-(2 × 1) surface with two domains and {0 1 1}-(2 × 1) facets and rule out the brookite alternative. Confirmation of this assignment was obtained by an XRD analysis performed at the Berlin synchrotron facility BESSY.  相似文献

The formation of a well-ordered p(2 × 2) overlayer of atomic nitrogen on the Pt(1 1 1) surface and its reaction with hydrogen were characterized with reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The p(2 × 2)-N overlayer is formed by exposure of ammonia to a surface at 85 K that is covered with 0.44 monolayer (ML) of molecular oxygen and then heating to 400 K. The reaction between ammonia and oxygen produces water, which desorbs below 400 K. The only desorption product observed above 400 K is molecular nitrogen, which has a peak desorption temperature of 453 K. The absence of oxygen after the 400 K anneal is confirmed with AES. Although atomic nitrogen can also be produced on the surface through the reaction of ammonia with an atomic, rather than molecular, oxygen overlayer at a saturation coverage of 0.25 ML, the yield of surface nitrogen is significantly less, as indicated by the N2 TPD peak area. Atomic nitrogen readily reacts with hydrogen to produce the NH species, which is characterized with RAIRS by an intense and narrow (FWHM ∼ 4 cm−1) peak at 3322 cm−1. The areas of the H2 TPD peak associated with NH dissociation and the XPS N 1s peak associated with the NH species indicate that not all of the surface N atoms can be converted to NH by the methods used here.  相似文献

The initial oxidation of Ni(1 1 1) in the temperature range of 550-700 K has been monitored by photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) and metastable-atom electron emission microscopy (MEEM). The PEEM and MEEM images show uniform patterns for the chemisorbed overlayer, reflecting the electronic homogeneity as seen at the μm scale. During the nucleation and lateral growth of oxide, however, the μm-scale pattern due to the formation of oxide domains appears and its evolution depends strongly on the substrate temperature and dose pressure of gaseous O2. Our data indicate that the high-temperature oxidation is regarded as a successive multi-nucleation process in a reaction-diffusion field.  相似文献

The adsorption of glycine on Au(1 1 1) pre-deposited with different amounts of Cu was investigated with both conventional X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and synchrotron-based photoemission. In the Cu submonolayer range, glycine physically adsorbs on the Cu/Au(1 1 1) surfaces in its zwitterionic form and completely desorbs at 350 K. The C 1s, O 1s and N 1s core level binding energies monotonically increase with Cu coverage. This indicates that, in the Cu submonolayer range, the admetal is alloyed with Au rather than forming overlayers on the Au(1 1 1) substrate, consistent with our recent experimental and theoretical results [X. Zhao, P. Liu, J. Hrbek, J.A. Rodriguez, M. Pérez, Surf. Sci. 592 (2005) 25]. Upon increasing the amount of deposited Cu over 1 ML, part of the glycine overlayer transforms from the zwitterionic form to the anionic form (NH2CH2COO) and adsorbs chemically on the Cu/Au(1 1 1) surface with the N 1s binding energy shifted by −2.3 eV. When the amount of deposited Cu is at 3.0 or 6.0 ML, the intensity of the N 1s chemisorption peak increases with aging time at 300 K. It indicates that glycine adsorption induces Cu segregation from the subsurface region onto the top layer of the substrate. Judging from the initial N 1s peak intensities, it is concluded that 64% and 36% of the top layer are still occupied by Au atoms before glycine adsorption even when the amounts of deposited Cu are 3.0 and 6.0 ML, respectively. On the Au(1 1 1) surface pre-dosed with 6.0 ML of Cu, part of the chemisorbed glycine will desorb and part will decompose upon heating to 450-500 K. In addition, about 20% of the glycine exists in the neutral form when the glycine overlayer was dosed on Cu/Au(1 1 1) held at 100 K.  相似文献

The initial growth of Pt on the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O and NiO(1 1 0) surfaces has been studied by coaxial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (CAICISS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Prior to Pt deposition, the atomic structure of the near-surface regions of the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O and NiO(1 1 0) structures were studied using CAICISS, finding changes to the interlayer spacings due to the adsorption of oxygen. Deposition of Pt on the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O surface led to a random substitutional alloy in the near-surface region at Pt coverages both below and in excess of 1 ML. In contrast, when the surface was treated with 1800 L of atomic oxygen in order to form a NiO(1 1 0) surface, a thin Pt layer was formed upon room temperature Pt deposition. XPS and LEED data are presented throughout to support the CAICISS observations.  相似文献

Low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) were used to study the growth and the structural evolution of Ni/Co/Pt(1 1 1) following high-temperature annealing. From the oscillation of the specular beam of the LEED and Auger uptake curve, we concluded that the growth mode of thin Ni films on 1 ML Co/Pt(1 1 1) is at least 2 ML layer-by-layer growth before three-dimensional island growth begins. The alloy formation of Ni/1 ML Co/Pt(1 1 1) was analyzed by AES. The temperature for the intermixing of Ni and Co layers in the upper interface without diffusing into the bulk of Pt is independent of the thickness of Ni when a Co buffer is one atomic monolayer. After the temperature was increased, formations of Ni-Co-Pt alloy, Ni-Pt alloy and Co-Pt alloy were observed. The temperature required for the Ni-Co intermixing layer to diffuse into Pt bulk increases with the thickness of Ni. The interlayer distance as a function of annealing temperature for 1 ML Ni/1 ML Co/Pt(1 1 1) was calculated from the I-V LEED. The evolution of LEED patterns was also observed at different annealing temperatures.  相似文献

The oxidation of Ni(1 0 0) and Ni(1 1 1) at elevated temperatures and large oxygen exposures, typical of the methods used in the preparation of NiO(1 0 0) films for surface studies, has been investigated by medium energy ion scattering (MEIS) using 100 keV H+ incident ions. Oxide film growth proceeds significantly faster on Ni(1 1 1) than on Ni(1 0 0), but on both surfaces oxide penetration occurs to depths significantly greater than 100 Å with total exposures of 1200 and 6000 L respectively. The metal/oxide interface is extremely rough, with metallic Ni extending to the surface, even for much thicker oxide films on Ni(1 1 1). On Ni(1 1 1), NiO growth occurs with the (1 0 0) face parallel to the Ni(1 1 1) surface and the close-packed 〈1 1 0〉 directions parallel. On Ni(1 0 0) the MEIS blocking curves cannot be reconciled with a single orientation of NiO(1 0 0) (with the 〈1 1 0〉 directions parallel) on the surface, but is consistent with the substantial orientational disorder (including tilt) previously identified by spot-profile analysis LEED.  相似文献

The adsorption and growth of ordered para-hexaphenyl (6P) films have been investigated both on clean and partially carbon pre-covered Au(1 1 1) single crystal surfaces by thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) under ultra-high vacuum conditions. The existence of a distinct first and second monomolecular 6P layer that clearly separate from the multilayer regime, which comprise lying molecules with respect to the substrate surface, could be inferred from TDS. For both the 6P mono- and multilayer grown on pure Au(1 1 1) the desorption energies have been determined based on experimental TDS data. In particular, for the monolayer regime a coverage dependence of the desorption energy has been found, which is attributed to repulsive interactions between neighbouring 6P molecules adsorbed on the gold surface. The existence of well-ordered film structures could be inferred from LEED for half monolayer and full monolayer thick 6P films. Based on the LEED and TDS data, structural models are presented for these highly ordered organic films. Multi-step dehydrogenation of 6P molecules adsorbed on clean Au(1 1 1) surfaces is reported for temperatures above 650 K together with experimental evidence for the existence of a regular overlayer composed of partially dehydrogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) intermediates. A quite different adsorption/desorption kinetics and film growth has been observed for 6P films grown on carbon pre-covered Au(1 1 1) surfaces.  相似文献

X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism have been used to study the growth process, chemical composition and magnetic character of iron deposited on ordered and disordered GaN(0 0 0 1) surfaces. On the (1 × 1) ordered surface the Fe grows uniformly but with disruption to the substrate surface, subsequently nitrogen desorbs from the surface, some of which diffuses into the Fe overlayer. The film is magnetically fractured, with high magnetic coercivity and broad switching fields. Conversely, the gallium rich disordered surface protects the underlying substrate from any disruption and initially induces non-uniform growth, the Fe clusters coalesce at ∼12 Å, to produce a uniform film with desirable magnetic characteristics. Films beyond this point (>12 Å) indicate sharp hysteresis loops with low coercivities. For the resultant film (36 Å) we measure a magnetic moment of 2.02 μB, in agreement with bulk bcc iron (2.068 μB.)  相似文献

A quantitative low energy electron diffraction (LEED) analysis has been performed for the p(2 × 2)-S and c(2 × 2)-S surface structures formed by exposing the (1 × 1) phase of Ir{1 0 0} to H2S at 750 K. S is found to adsorb on the fourfold hollow sites in both structures leading to Pendry R-factor values of 0.17 for the p(2 × 2)-S and 0.16 for the c(2 × 2)-S structures. The distances between S and the nearest and next-nearest Ir atoms were found to be similar in both structures: 2.36 ± 0.01 Å and 3.33 ± 0.01 Å, respectively. The buckling in the second substrate layer is consistent with other structural studies for S adsorption on fcc{1 0 0} transition metal surfaces: 0.09 Å for p(2 × 2)-S and 0.02 Å for c(2 × 2)-S structures. The (1 × 5) reconstruction, which is the most stable phase for clean Ir{1 0 0}, is completely lifted and a c(2 × 2)-S overlayer is formed after exposure to H2S at 300 K followed by annealing to 520 K. CO temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiments indicate that the major factor in the poisoning of Ir by S is site blocking.  相似文献

The Au/Ti(0 0 0 1) adsorption system was studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and photoemission spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation after step-wise Au evaporation onto the Ti(0 0 0 1) surface. For adsorption of Au at 300 K, no additional superstructures were observed and the (1 × 1) pattern of the clean surface simply became diffuse. Annealing of gold layers more than 1 ML thick resulted in the formation of an ordered Au-Ti surface alloy. Depending on the temperature and annealing time, three surface reconstructions were observed by LEED: (√3 × √3) R30°, (2 × 2) and a one-dimensional incommensurate (√3 × √3) rectangular pattern. The Au 4f core level and valence band photoemission spectra provided evidence of a strong chemical interaction between gold and titanium. The data indicated formation of an intermetallic interface and associated valence orbital hybridization, together with diffusion of gold into the bulk. Au core-level shifts were found to be dependent on the surface alloy stoichiometry.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of epitaxial ZnO thin films grown on (0 0 0 1) sapphire substrate were investigated by nanoindentation with a Berkovich tip and compared with that of bulk ZnO single crystal. In all indents on ZnO film a single discontinuity (‘pop-in’) in the load versus indentation depth data was observed at a specific depth of between 13 and 16 nm. In bulk ZnO, however only 65% of indents showed pop-in event at a specific depth of between 12 and 20 nm. The mechanism responsible for the ‘pop-in’ event in the epitaxial ZnO thin films as well as in bulk ZnO was attributed to the sudden propagation of dislocations, which had been pinned down by pre-existing defects, along the pyramidal and basal {0 0 0 1} planes (cross slip). The elastic modulus and hardness of the epitaxial ZnO thin films were determined to be 154 ± 5 and 8.7 ± 0.2 GPa, respectively, at an indentation depth of 30 nm.  相似文献

A detailed investigation of the multilayer growth of PTCDA on Ag(1 1 1) by high resolution LEED (SPA-LEED) is reported. The first two monolayers are closed and exhibit a structure, which is commensurate with respect to the underlying Ag(1 1 1) surface. The lattice parameters are close to those of the (1 0 2) plane of the β bulk phase of PTCDA, with deviations ?2%. The vertical stacking of the second layer with respect to the first monolayer (observed at 300 K) corresponds to that in the β bulk phase of PTCDA. At high growth temperatures (400 K), Stranski-Krastanov growth occurs from the third monolayer onward, and PTCDA clusters, preferentially with few well defined facets, grow. The structure of the clusters is that of the thermodynamically more stable α bulk phase of PTCDA. Contrary, at low growth temperatures (200 K), the growth proceeds in the Frank van der Merve mode, with several open layers. From slope selection there is evidence for an Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier. The lateral packing of the PTCDA grown at low temperatures corresponds within error to that of the β bulk phase. The low temperature structure and morphology is meta-stable. Short annealing at 300 K flattens the PTCDA film, and prolonged annealing at 400 K causes the film to adapt the structure and morphology obtained directly at 400 K growth temperature. Presumably, the formation of layers with a β-phase-like lattice at low temperature is due to the better fit of the β phase, compared to the α phase lattice, to the underlying commensurate monolayer. However, at high growth temperatures, the thermodynamically more stable α phase grows, reducing the area of lattice misfit to the underlying commensurate first two layers by formation of clusters.  相似文献
