The alloying process of Ti deposited on Cu(0 0 1) was studied by means of XPS, LEIS, XPD and LEED intensity analysis. With the sample held at 570 K, a linear decrease of the Cu LEIS signal as a function of the amount of Ti deposited is observed in the early stages of deposition until a constant value is reached. At the onset of the plateau a c(√2 × 5√2)R45° LEED pattern starts to be visible. XPD and LEED intensity measurements were performed for the c(√2 × 5√2)R45° phase prepared depositing ca. 1.5 monolayer of Ti. The angle-scanned XPD curves measured for the phase c(√2 × 5√2)R45° reveal that Ti atoms substitute Cu atoms in the fcc lattice of the substrate. The polar XPD curves show that at least the first four layers of the substrate are involved in the alloying process. We found that the (3 1 0) plane of the Cu4Ti alloy (D1a type-structure) fits, without significant contraction or expansion of the lattice parameters, the c(√2 × 5√2)R45° structure. The intensity versus energy curves of the diffracted beams were calculated on the basis of this structural model using the tensor LEED method. The results of the LEED intensity analysis provide a further evidence of the formation of a slab of Cu4Ti(3 1 0) layers.  相似文献

An ultra thin Sn layer (6 Å) was deposited onto Rh(1 1 1) single crystal surface. We followed changes in low energy electron diffraction (LEED) pattern during progressive annealing together with development of CO adsorption capacity and photoelectron spectra obtained using synchrotron radiation. Surface bimetallic alloy development with increasing temperature was followed by LEED and synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SRPES). LEED results show several surface structure of Sn/Rh(1 1 1) sample in dependence on sample temperature. If it increases, the surface structure develops to the stable ordered (√3 × √3)R30° structure. Surface CO adsorption depends strongly on the amount of Sn in the top sample layer then it corresponds to the development of the surface structure. The CO adsorption capacity raises with increasing temperature.Photoelectron spectra of Sn and Rh core levels and their shifts and shapes were studied during the annealing and CO adsorption. The resulting spectra are used to discuss the Sn-Rh surface alloy creation.The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the CO adsorption on the Sn/Rh(1 1 1) surface. Valence band spectra measured at different primary energies are presented to demonstrate this effect. These spectra show different adsorption properties of the studied system in dependence on the amount of Sn in the top layer and geometric structure of the surface.  相似文献

A new reconstruction of √3 × √3-R30° has been observed on a GaN film grown on a 6H-SiC (0 0 0 1)-√3 × √3 surface using RHEED and LEED experimental techniques. The experimental LEED PF shows that the GaN film is Ga-terminated hexagonal. The surface is a mixture of two structures with a single bilayer height difference between them. One is a √3 × √3-R30° reconstruction with Ga-adatoms occupying the T4 sites. Another is a Ga-terminated 1 × 1 with no extra Ga on top. The area ratio of the √3 × √3 part to the 1 × 1 part is slightly larger than 1. The first principle total energy calculations and Tensor-LEED I-V curves simulations further confirm this structure model.  相似文献

We have studied adsorption of water on the Zr(0 0 0 1) surface at sub-monolayer coverage by means of LEED and photoemission spectroscopy. An ordered (2 × 2) structure is formed after adsorption of 0.6-1.4 Langmuirs at 473 K. The sharpest LEED pattern was observed at an exposure of 1.2 L implying a coverage of 0.5 ML of oxygen. The same exposure at 293 K gives only a weak and diffuse (2 × 2) pattern. In addition, the sharp (2 × 2) pattern obtained at 473 K can be reversibly weakened by cooling to 293 K and subsequently sharpened by heating. For the sharp (2 × 2) structure, valence band spectra indicated dissociation of water and showed a peak composed mainly of O 2p derived states with two components at 6.0 eV and 6.6 eV binding energy. On cooling to 293 K, the O 2p peak became narrower and a new state appeared at 7.9 eV. Two components of the O 1s core level were resolved for the (2 × 2) structure, assigned to oxide and hydroxyl groups. The hydrogen on the surface of Zr(0 0 0 1) resulting from the dissociation of water and from bulk segregation strongly influenced the formation of the (2 × 2) structure of oxygen, and caused a temperature instability of the structure.  相似文献

The initial Ge growth stages on a (√3 × √3)R30°-reconstructed SiC(0 0 0 1) surface (√3) have been studied using a complete set of surface techniques such as reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoemission and compared with similar Si surface enrichments in place of Ge. The investigations essentially focus on the wetting growth-regimes that are favoured by the use of the √3 surface as a starting substrate, this surface being the closest to a smooth and ideally truncated Si-terminated face of hexagonal SiC(0 0 0 1). Depending on temperature and Ge or Si coverages, varying surface organizations are obtained. They range from unorganized layer by layer growths to relaxed Ge(1 1 1) or Si(1 1 1) island growths, through intermediate attempts of coherent and strained Ge or Si surface layers, characterized by 4 × 4 and 3 × 3 surface reconstructions, respectively. RHEED intensity oscillation recordings, as a function of Ge or Si deposited amounts, have been particularly helpful to pinpoint the limited (by the high lattice mismatch) existence domains of these interesting coherent phases, either in terms of formation temperature or surface coverages. Prominently comparable data for these two Ge- and Si-related reconstructions allow us to propose an atomic model for the still unexplained Ge-4 × 4 one. It is based on a same local organization in trimer and ad-atom units for the Ge excess as admitted for the Si-excess of the 3 × 3 surface, the higher strain nevertheless favouring arrangements, for the Ge-units, in 4 × 4 arrays instead of 3 × 3 Si ones. Admitting such models, 1.25 and 1.44 monolayers of Ge and Si, should, respectively, be able to lie coherently on SiC, with respective lattice mismatches near 30% and 25%. The experimental RHEED-oscillations values are compatible with such theoretical ones. Moreover, these RHEED coverage determinations (for layer completion, for instance) inform us in turn about the initial Si richness of the starting √3 reconstruction and help us to discriminate between earlier contradictory atomic models proposed in the literature.  相似文献

Measurements of the core-level shifts in Au 4f photoemission spectra from Au(1 1 1) at different coverages of methylthiolate and butylthiolate are reported. Adsorption leads to two components in addition to that from the bulk, one at lower photoelectron binding energy attributed to surface atoms not bonded to thiolate species, while the second component has a higher binding energy and is attributed to Au atoms bonded to the surface thiolate. The relative intensities of these surface components for the saturation coverage (mainly (√3 × √3)R30°) phases are discussed in terms of different local adsorption sites in a well-ordered surface, and favour adsorption of the thiolate species atop Au adatoms. Alternative interpretations that might be consistent with an Au-adatom-dithiolate model are discussed, particularly in the context of the possible influence of reduced coverage associated with a disordered surface. Marked differences from previously-reported results for longer-chain alkylthiolate layers are highlighted.  相似文献

In this study, InP(1 0 0) surfaces were bombarded by argon ions in ultra high vacuum. Indium metallic droplets were created in well controlled quantities and played the role of precursors for the nitridation process. A glow discharge cell was used to produce a continuous plasma with a majority of N atomic species. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies indicated that the nitrogen combined with indium surface atoms to create InN thin films (two monolayers) on an In rich-InP(1 0 0) surface. This process occurred at low temperature: 250 °C. Synchrotron radiation photoemission (SR-XPS) studies of the valence band spectra, LEED and EELS measurements show an evolution of surface species and the effect of a 450 °C annealing of the InN/InP structures. The results reveal that annealing allows the crystallization of the thin InN layers, while the LEED pattern shows a (4 × 1) reconstruction. As a consequence, InN related structures in EELS and valence bands spectra are different before and after the annealing. According to SR-XPS measurements, the Fermi level is found to be pinned at 1.6 eV above the valence band maximum (VBM).  相似文献

The interaction of sulfur with gold surfaces has attracted considerable interest due to numerous technological applications such as the formation of self-assembled monolayers and as a chemical sensor. Here, we report on the interaction of sulfur with Au(1 1 1) at two different temperatures (300 K and 420 K) studied by real-time scanning tunnelling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction and Auger electron spectroscopy. In the low coverage regime (<0.1 ML), S adsorption lifts the herringbone reconstruction of the clean Au(1 1 1) surface indicating a lateral expansion of the surface layer. An ordered (√3 × √3)R30° sulfur adlayer develops as the coverage reaches ∼0.3 ML. At higher S coverages (>0.3 ML) gold surface atoms are removed from regular terrace sites and incorporated into a growing gold sulfide phase. At 300 K this process leads to the formation of a rough pit and mound surface morphology. This gold sulfide exhibits short-range order and an incommensurate, long-range ordered AuS phase develops upon annealing at 450-525 K. In contrast, formation of an ordered AuS phase via rapid step-retraction rather than etch pit formation is observed during S-interaction with Au(1 1 1) surfaces at 420 K. Our results shed new light on the S-Au(1 1 1) interaction.  相似文献

We report the formation of Si(1 1 3)-3 × 2 facets upon exposing oxygens on the Si(5 5 12) surface at an elevated temperature. These facets are found to form only for a limited range of oxygen exposure and exhibit a well-defined 3 × 2 LEED pattern. We also find the surface electronic state unique only to the facets in the valence band. The spectral feature of these electronic states and the behavior of a (1/3 1/2) LEED spot upon oxygen contents in the facets indicate that the formation is a heterogeneous mixture of the clean Si(1 1 3) facets free of oxygens and other facets containing oxygen atoms.  相似文献

Intermixed structures for alkalis (larger than Li) on close-packed substrates have previously been observed only on Al(1 1 1). This study shows that K forms an ordered intermixed structure on Pb(1 1 1). The structures of clean Pb(1 1 1) and Pb(1 1 1)-(√3 × √3)R30°-K were studied using dynamical low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). The clean Pb(1 1 1) surface at 47 K was found to be a relaxed version of the bulk structure, in agreement with an earlier study of the same surface [Y.S. Li, F. Jona, P.M. Marcus, Phys. Rev. B 43 (1991) 6337]. At room temperature, adsorption of K on this surface results in a (√3 × √3)R30° structure, which was shown using dynamical LEED to consist of K atoms substituted in surface vacancies. The K-Pb bond length was found to be 3.62 ± 0.3 Å, with no significant change to the Pb interlayer spacings.  相似文献

Homoepitaxial growth of Au on Bi-covered Au(1 1 1) was studied at room temperature using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). From observations of RHEED it is found that the Au(1 1 1) (23 × 1) reconstruction structure changes to a (1 × 1) by about 0.16-0.5 ML deposition of Bi and to a (2√3 × 2√3)R30° by about 1.0 ML deposition of Bi, respectively. The surface morphology evolution by Bi deposition leads to a change of Au homoepitaxial growth behavior from layer-by-layer to step flow. This indicates that the surface diffusion distance of Au atoms on the Bi-precovered (1 × 1) and (2√3 × 2√3)R30° surfaces is longer than that on the Au(1 1 1) (23 × 1) clean surfaces. A strong surface segregation of Bi was found at top of surface. It is concluded that Bi atoms acted as an effective surfactant in the Au homoepitaxial growth by promoting Au intralayer mass transport.  相似文献

The adsorption of two very different adsorbates, gold and oxygen, induce the formation of a (3 × 1) surface structure on both W(1 1 2) and Mo(1 1 2). In spite of similar adsorbate unit cells, the surface electronic structure, derived from photoemission, exhibits pronounced differences for the two adsorbates. Indeed, both experiment and simulations indicate substantial changes in electronic structures of (1 × 1) and (3 × 1) gold overlayers supported by highly anisotropic (1 1 2) plane. We speculate that (3 × 1) is a favored periodicity in the atomic rearrangement of the (1 1 2) surfaces of molybdenum and tungsten due in part as a result of the initial state band structure of these surfaces.  相似文献

Electronic and geometric properties of the adsorbate-substrate complex formed upon adsorption of methyl oxirane on Si(1 0 0)2 × 1 at room temperature is reported, obtained with synchrotron radiation-induced valence and core-level photoemission. A ring-opening reaction is demonstrated to occur, followed by a five-membered ring formation involving two of the Si surface atoms bound to a surface dimer. Core-level photoemission spectra support the ring-opening reaction and the SiO and SiC bond formation, while from the valence spectra a more extended molecular fragmentation can be ruled out. We discuss the most likely geometry of the five-membered ring.  相似文献

A study of surface and interface properties of reconstructed Au-SiC(0 0 0 1) surfaces is reported. Two reconstructions were prepared on SiC(0 0 0 1), a √3 × √3R30° and a Si-rich 3 × 3, before Au deposition and subsequent annealing at different temperatures. For the Si-rich 3 × 3 surface the existence of three stable reconstructions 2√3 × 2√3R30°, 3 × 3 and 5 × 5 are revealed after deposition of Au layers, 4-8 Å thick, and annealing at progressively higher temperatures between 500 and 950 °C. For the 2√3 surface two surface shifted Si 2p components are revealed and the Au 4f spectra clearly indicate silicide formation. The variation in relative intensity for the different core level components with photon energy suggests formation of an ordered silicide layer with some excess Si on top. Similar core level spectra and variations in relative intensity with photon energy are obtained for the 3 × 3 and 5 × 5 phases but the amount of excess Si on top is observed to be smaller and an additional weak Si 2p component becomes discernable.For the √3 surface the evolution of the core level spectra after Au deposition and annealing is shown to be distinctly different than for the Si-rich 3 × 3 surface and only one stable reconstruction, a 3 × 3 phase, is observed at similar annealing temperatures.  相似文献

The Au adsorption induced √21 × √21 super-lattice structure on the Si(1 1 1)-√3 × √3-Ag structure has been investigated using reflection high-energy positron diffraction. The height of the Au adatom was determined to be 0.59 Å from the underlying Ag layer from the rocking curve analysis with the dynamical diffraction theory. The adatoms were preferentially situated at the center of the large Ag triangle of the inequivalent triangle structure of the Si(1 1 1)-√3 × √3-Ag substrate. From the intensity distribution in the fractional-order Laue zone, the in-plane coordinate of the Au adatoms was obtained.  相似文献

We have investigated a BC3 covered NbB2(0 0 0 1) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The STM images reveal characteristic features of a Moiré pattern reflecting an incommensurate relation of the BC3 sheet with the substrate: bright protrusions with the periodicity of the substrate lattice are modulated in intensity with the periodicity of the BC3 lattice. As a result, the surface exhibits nm-scale patchy regions with either the √3 × √3 or the 1 × 1 structure of the substrate. The two-dimensional Fourier transformation pattern of the STM image is consistent with the LEED pattern proving the epitaxial and incommensurate relationship between BC3 surface sheet and substrate. No feature of a predicted superconducting gap was found in STS spectra measured at 5 K.  相似文献

The atomic structure of Si(1 1 1)-√21 × √21-Ag surface, which is formed by the adsorption of small amount of Ag atoms on the Si(1 1 1)-√3 × √3-Ag surface, was determined by using reflection high-energy positron diffraction. The rocking curve measured from the Si(1 1 1)-√21 × √21-Ag surface was analyzed by means of the intensity calculations based on the dynamical diffraction theory. The adatom height of the extra Ag atoms from the underlying Ag layer was determined to be 0.53 Å with a coverage of 0.14 ML, which corresponds to three atoms in the √21 × √21 unit cell. From the pattern analyses, the most appropriate adsorption sites of the extra Ag atoms were proposed.  相似文献

The adsorption of CO on Pt(1 1 1), (2 × 2) and (√3 × √3)R30° Sn/Pt(1 1 1) surface alloys has been studied using temperature programmed desorption (TPD), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and infrared reflection adsorption spectroscopy (IRAS). The presence of Sn in the surface layer of Pt(1 1 1) reduces the binding energy of CO by a few kcal/mol. IRAS data show two C-O stretching frequencies, ∼2100 and ∼1860 cm−1, corresponding to atop and bridge bonded species, respectively. Bridge bonded stretching frequencies are only observed for Pt(1 1 1) and (2 × 2) Sn/Pt(1 1 1) alloy surfaces. A slight coverage dependence of the vibrational frequencies is observed for the three surfaces. High pressure IRAS experiments over a broad temperature range show no indication of bridge bonded CO on any of the three surfaces. Direct CO adsorption on Sn sites is not observed over the measured temperature and pressure ranges.  相似文献

The Au silicide islands have been fabricated by additional deposition of Au on the prepared surface at 270 °C where the Si islands of magic sizes were formed on the Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) dimer-adatom-stacking fault substrate. The surface structure on the Au silicide islands shows the Au/Si(1 1 1)-√3 × √3 reconstructed structure although the substrate remains 7 × 7 DAS structure. The size of the Au silicide islands depends on the size distribution of the preformed Si islands, because the initial size and shape of the Si islands play important roles in the formation of the Au silicide island. We have achieved the fabrication of the Au silicide islands of about the same size (∼5 nm) and the same shape by controlling the initial Si growth and the additional Au growth conditions.  相似文献

Possible formation of stable Au atomic wire on the hydrogen terminated Si(0 0 1): 3×1 surface is investigated under the density functional formalism. The hydrogen terminated Si(0 0 1): 3×1 surface is patterned in two different ways by removing selective hydrogen atoms from the surface. The adsorption of Au on such surfaces is studied at different sub-monolayer coverages. At 4/9 monolayer (ML) coverage, zigzag continuous Au chains are found to be stable on the patterned hydrogen terminated Si(0 0 1): 3×1 surface. The reason for the stability of the wire structures at 4/9 ML coverage is explained. It is to be noted that beyond 4/9 ML coverage, the additional Au atoms may introduce clusters on the surface. The continuous atomic gold chains on the substrate may be useful for the fabrication of atomic scale devices.  相似文献
