Let G be a planar graph without 5-cycles or without 6-cycles. In this paper, we prove that if G is connected and δ(G)≥2, then there exists an edge xyE(G) such that d(x)+d(y)≤9, or there is a 2-alternating cycle. By using the above result, we obtain that (1) its linear 2-arboricity , (2) its list total chromatic number is Δ(G)+1 if Δ(G)≥8, and (3) its list edge chromatic number is Δ(G) if Δ(G)≥8.  相似文献

The well-known Ore??s theorem (see Ore in Am Math Mon 65:55, 1960), states that a graph G of order n such that d(x)?+?d(y)??? n for every pair {x, y} of non-adjacent vertices of G is Hamiltonian. In this paper, we considerably improve this theorem by proving that in a graph G of order n and of minimum degree ????? 2, if there exist at least n ? ?? vertices x of G so that the number of the vertices y of G non-adjacent to x and satisfying d(x)?+?d(y)??? n ? 1 is at most ?? ? 1, then G is Hamiltonian. We will see that there are graphs which violate the condition of the so called ??Extended Ore??s theorem?? (see Faudree et?al. in Discrete Math 307:873?C877, 2007) as well as the condition of Chvatál??s theorem (see Chvátal in J Combin Theory Ser B 12:163?C168, 1972) and the condition of the so called ??Extended Fan?? theorem?? (see Faudree et?al. in Discrete Math 307:873?C877, 2007), but satisfy the condition of our result, which then, only allows to conclude that such graphs are Hamiltonian. This will show the pertinence of our result. We give also a new result of the same type, ensuring the existence of a path of given length.  相似文献

We denote the distance between vertices x and y of a graph by d(x, y), and pij(x, y) = ∥ {z : d(x, z) = i, d(y, z) = j} ∥. The (s, q, d)-projective graph is the graph having the s-dimensional subspaces of a d-dimensional vector space over GF(q) as vertex set, and two vertices x, y adjacent iff dim(x ? y) = s ? 1. These graphs are regular graphs. Also, there exist integers λ and μ > 4 so that μ is a perfect square, p11(x, y) = λ whenever d(x, y) = 1, and p11(x, y) = μ whenever d(x, y) = 2. The (s, q, d)-projective graphs where 2d3 ≤ s < d ? 2 and (s, q, d) ≠ (2d3, 2, d), are characterized by the above conditions together with the property that there exists an integer r satisfying certain inequalities.  相似文献

The strong chromatic index of a class of graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The strong chromatic index of a graph G is the minimum integer k such that the edge set of G can be partitioned into k induced matchings. Faudree et al. [R.J. Faudree, R.H. Schelp, A. Gyárfás, Zs. Tuza, The strong chromatic index of graphs, Ars Combin. 29B (1990) 205-211] proposed an open problem: If G is bipartite and if for each edge xyE(G), d(x)+d(y)≤5, then sχ(G)≤6. Let H0 be the graph obtained from a 5-cycle by adding a new vertex and joining it to two nonadjacent vertices of the 5-cycle. In this paper, we show that if G (not necessarily bipartite) is not isomorphic to H0 and d(x)+d(y)≤5 for any edge xy of G then sχ(G)≤6. The proof of the result implies a linear time algorithm to produce a strong edge coloring using at most 6 colors for such graphs.  相似文献

The concept of degree distance of a connected graph G is a variation of the well-known Wiener index, in which the degrees of vertices are also involved. It is defined by D(G)=∑xV(G)d(x)∑yV(G)d(x,y), where d(x) and d(x,y) are the degree of x and the distance between x and y, respectively. In this paper it is proved that connected graphs of order n≥4 having the smallest degree distances are K1,n−1,BS(n−3,1) and K1,n−1+e (in this order), where BS(n−3,1) denotes the bistar consisting of vertex disjoint stars K1,n−3 and K1,1 with central vertices joined by an edge.  相似文献

For a pair of vertices x and y in a graph G, we denote by dG(x,y) the distance between x and y in G. We call x a boundary vertex of y if x and y belong to the same component and dG(y,v)?dG(y,x) for each neighbor v of x in G. A boundary vertex of some vertex is simply called a boundary vertex, and the set of boundary vertices in G is called the boundary of G, and is denoted by B(G).In this paper, we investigate graphs with a small boundary. Since a pair of farthest vertices are boundary vertices, |B(G)|?2 for every connected graph G of order at least two. We characterize the graphs with boundary of order at most three. We cannot give a characterization of graphs with exactly four boundary vertices, but we prove that such graphs have minimum degree at most six. Finally, we give an upper bound to the minimum degree of a connected graph G in terms of |B(G)|.  相似文献

A total coloring of a graph G is a coloring of all elements of G, i.e., vertices and edges, in such a way that no two adjacent or incident elements receive the same color. Let L(x) be a set of colors assigned to each element x of G. Then a list total coloring of G is a total coloring such that each element x receives a color contained in L(x). The list total coloring problem asks whether G has a list total coloring. In this paper, we first show that the list total coloring problem is NP-complete even for series-parallel graphs. We then give a sufficient condition for a series-parallel graph to have a list total coloring, that is, we prove a theorem that any series-parallel graph G has a list total coloring if |L(v)|min{5,Δ+1} for each vertex v and |L(e)|max{5,d(v)+1,d(w)+1} for each edge e=vw, where Δ is the maximum degree of G and d(v) and d(w) are the degrees of the ends v and w of e, respectively. The theorem implies that any series-parallel graph G has a total coloring with Δ+1 colors if Δ4. We finally present a linear-time algorithm to find a list total coloring of a given series-parallel graph G if G satisfies the sufficient condition.  相似文献

The main result of this paper is the following theorem: Let G = (X,E) be a digraph without loops or multiple edges, |X| ?3, and h be an integer ?1, if G contains a spanning arborescence and if d+G(x)+d?G(x)+d?G(y)+d?G(y)? 2|X |?2h?1 for all x, y?X, xy, non adjacent in G, then G contains a spanning arborescence with ?h terminal vertices. A strengthening of Gallai-Milgram's theorem is also proved.  相似文献

On island sequences of labelings with a condition at distance two   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An L(2,1)-labeling of a graph G is a function f from the vertex set of G to the set of nonnegative integers such that |f(x)−f(y)|≥2 if d(x,y)=1, and |f(x)−f(y)|≥1 if d(x,y)=2, where d(x,y) denotes the distance between the pair of vertices x,y. The lambda number of G, denoted λ(G), is the minimum range of labels used over all L(2,1)-labelings of G. An L(2,1)-labeling of G which achieves the range λ(G) is referred to as a λ-labeling. A hole of an L(2,1)-labeling is an unused integer within the range of integers used. The hole index of G, denoted ρ(G), is the minimum number of holes taken over all its λ-labelings. An island of a given λ-labeling of G with ρ(G) holes is a maximal set of consecutive integers used by the labeling. Georges and Mauro [J.P. Georges, D.W. Mauro, On the structure of graphs with non-surjective L(2,1)-labelings, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 19 (2005) 208-223] inquired about the existence of a connected graph G with ρ(G)≥1 possessing two λ-labelings with different ordered sequences of island cardinalities. This paper provides an infinite family of such graphs together with their lambda numbers and hole indices. Key to our discussion is the determination of the path covering number of certain 2-sparse graphs, that is, graphs containing no pair of adjacent vertices of degree greater than 2.  相似文献

A graph G satisfies the Ore-condition if d(x) + d(y) ≥ | V (G) | for any xy ■ E(G). Luo et al. [European J. Combin., 2008] characterized the simple Z3-connected graphs satisfying the Ore-condition. In this paper, we characterize the simple Z3-connected graphs G satisfying d(x) + d(y) ≥ | V (G) |-1 for any xy ■ E(G), which improves the results of Luo et al.  相似文献

A Fan Type Condition For Heavy Cycles in Weighted Graphs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A weighted graph is a graph in which each edge e is assigned a non-negative number w(e), called the weight of e. The weight of a cycle is the sum of the weights of its edges. The weighted degree d w (v) of a vertex v is the sum of the weights of the edges incident with v. In this paper, we prove the following result: Suppose G is a 2-connected weighted graph which satisfies the following conditions: 1. max{d w (x),d w (y)∣d(x,y)=2}≥c/2; 2. w(x z)=w(y z) for every vertex zN(x)∩N(y) with d(x,y)=2; 3. In every triangle T of G, either all edges of T have different weights or all edges of T have the same weight. Then G contains either a Hamilton cycle or a cycle of weight at least c. This generalizes a theorem of Fan on the existence of long cycles in unweighted graphs to weighted graphs. We also show we cannot omit Condition 2 or 3 in the above result. Let G be a simple graph on n vertices. In this paper, we prove that if G satisfies the condition that d(x)+d(y)≥n for each xyE(G), then G has no nowhere-zero 3-flow if and only if G is either one of the five graphs on at most 6 vertices or one of a very special class of graphs on at least 6 vertices.  相似文献

For a graph G, ??(G) denotes the minimum degree of G. In 1971, Bondy proved that, if G is a 2-connected graph of order n and d(x)?+?d(y)????n for each pair of non-adjacent vertices x,y in G, then G is pancyclic or G?=?K n/2,n/2. In 2001, Xu proved that, if G is a 2-connected graph of order n????6 and |N(x)????N(y)|?+???(G)????n for each pair of non-adjacent vertices x,y in G, then G is pancyclic or G?=?K n/2,n/2. In this paper, we introduce a new sufficient condition of generalizing degree sum and neighborhood union and prove that, if G is a 2-connected graph of order n????6 and |N(x)????N(y)|?+?d(w)????n for any three vertices x,y,w of d(x,y)?=?2 and wx or $wy\not\in E(G)$ in G, then G is 4-vertex pancyclic or G belongs to two classes of well-structured exceptional graphs. This result also generalizes the above results.  相似文献

The pair length of a graph G is the maximum positive integer k, such that the vertex set of G can be partitioned into disjoint pairs {x,x}, such that d(x,x)?k for every xV(G) and xy is an edge of G whenever xy is an edge. Chen asked whether the pair length of the cartesian product of two graphs is equal to the sum of their pair lengths. Our aim in this short note is to prove this result.  相似文献

Let G be a finite connected graph. If x and y are vertices of G, one may define a distance function dG on G by letting dG(x, y) be the minimal length of any path between x and y in G (with dG(x, x) = 0). Thus, for example, dG(x, y) = 1 if and only if {x, y} is an edge of G. Furthermore, we define the distance matrix D(G) for G to be the square matrix with rows and columns indexed by the vertex set of G which has dG(x, y) as its (x, y) entry. In this paper we are concerned with properties of D(G) for the case in which G is a tree (i.e., G is acyclic). In particular, we precisely determine the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of D(G). This determination is made by deriving surprisingly simple expressions for these coefficients as certain fixed linear combinations of the numbers of various subgraphs of G.  相似文献

The circular list coloring is a circular version of list colorings of graphs. Let χinc,l denote the circular choosability(or the circular list chromatic number). In this paper, the circular choosability of outer planar graphs and odd wheel is discussed.  相似文献

In 2001, Kawarabayashi proved that for any odd integer k ≥ 3, if a k-connected graph G is \({K^{-}_{4}}\) -free, then G has a k-contractible edge. He pointed out, by a counterexample, that this result does not hold when k is even. In this paper, we have proved the following two results on the subject: (1) For any even integer k ≥ 4, if a k-connected graph G is \({K_{4}^{-}}\) -free and d G (x) + d G (y) ≥ 2k + 1 hold for every two adjacent vertices x and y of V(G), then G has a k-contractible edge. (2) Let t ≥ 3, k ≥ 2t – 1 be integers. If a k-connected graph G is \({(K_{1}+(K_{2} \cup K_{1, t}))}\) -free and d G (x) + d G (y) ≥ 2k + 1 hold for every two adjacent vertices x and y of V(G), then G has a k-contractible edge.  相似文献

Let G=(V+s,E) be a 2-edge-connected graph with a designated vertex s. A pair of edges rs,st is called admissible if splitting off these edges (replacing rs and st by rt) preserves the local edge-connectivity (the maximum number of pairwise edge disjoint paths) between each pair of vertices in V. The operation splitting off is very useful in graph theory, it is especially powerful in the solution of edge-connectivity augmentation problems as it was shown by Frank [Augmenting graphs to meet edge-connectivity requirements, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 5(1) (1992) 22-53]. Mader [A reduction method for edge-connectivity in graphs, Ann. Discrete Math. 3 (1978) 145-164] proved that if d(s)≠3 then there exists an admissible pair incident to s. We generalize this result by showing that if d(s)?4 then there exists an edge incident to s that belongs to at least ⌊d(s)/3⌋ admissible pairs. An infinite family of graphs shows that this bound is best possible. We also refine a result of Frank [On a theorem of Mader, Discrete Math. 101 (1992) 49-57] by describing the structure of the graph if an edge incident to s belongs to no admissible pairs. This provides a new proof for Mader's theorem.  相似文献

In the upper bound graph of a poset P, the vertex set is V(P) and xy is an edge if there exists an mV(P) with x,yPm. We show some characterizations on split upper bound graphs, threshold upper bound graphs and difference upper bound graphs in terms of m-subposets and canonical posets.  相似文献

We study an inverse problem for a non-compact Riemannian manifold whose ends have the following properties: On each end, the Riemannian metric is assumed to be a short-range perturbation of the metric of the form 2(dy)+h(x,dx), h(x,dx) being the metric of some compact manifold of codimension 1. Moreover one end is exactly cylindrical, i.e. the metric is equal to 2(dy)+h(x,dx). Given two such manifolds having the same scattering matrix on that exactly cylindrical end for all energies, we show that these two manifolds are isometric.  相似文献
