In the present paper, we propose Krylov‐based methods for solving large‐scale differential Sylvester matrix equations having a low‐rank constant term. We present two new approaches for solving such differential matrix equations. The first approach is based on the integral expression of the exact solution and a Krylov method for the computation of the exponential of a matrix times a block of vectors. In the second approach, we first project the initial problem onto a block (or extended block) Krylov subspace and get a low‐dimensional differential Sylvester matrix equation. The latter problem is then solved by some integration numerical methods such as the backward differentiation formula or Rosenbrock method, and the obtained solution is used to build the low‐rank approximate solution of the original problem. We give some new theoretical results such as a simple expression of the residual norm and upper bounds for the norm of the error. Some numerical experiments are given in order to compare the two approaches.  相似文献

Iterative methods of Krylov‐subspace type can be very effective solvers for matrix systems resulting from partial differential equations if appropriate preconditioning is employed. We describe and test block preconditioners based on a Schur complement approximation which uses a multigrid method for finite element approximations of the linearized incompressible Navier‐Stokes equations in streamfunction and vorticity formulation. By using a Picard iteration, we use this technology to solve fully nonlinear Navier‐Stokes problems. The solvers which result scale very well with problem parameters. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel memory‐efficient Arnoldi algorithms for solving matrix polynomial eigenvalue problems are presented. More specifically, we consider the case of matrix polynomials expressed in the Chebyshev basis, which is often numerically more appropriate than the standard monomial basis for a larger degree d. The standard way of solving polynomial eigenvalue problems proceeds by linearization, which increases the problem size by a factor d. Consequently, the memory requirements of Krylov subspace methods applied to the linearization grow by this factor. In this paper, we develop two variants of the Arnoldi method that build the Krylov subspace basis implicitly, in a way that only vectors of length equal to the size of the original problem need to be stored. The proposed variants are generalizations of the so‐called quadratic Arnoldi method and two‐level orthogonal Arnoldi procedure methods, which have been developed for the monomial case. We also show how the typical ingredients of a full implementation of the Arnoldi method, including shift‐and‐invert and restarting, can be incorporated. Numerical experiments are presented for matrix polynomials up to degree 30 arising from the interpolation of nonlinear eigenvalue problems, which stem from boundary element discretizations of PDE eigenvalue problems. We construct, analyze, and implement SSOR‐like preconditioners for non‐Hermitian positive definite system of linear equations when its coefficient matrix possesses either a dominant Hermitian part or a dominant skew‐Hermitian part. We derive tight bounds for eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices and obtain convergence rates of the corresponding SSOR‐like iteration methods as well as the corresponding preconditioned GMRES iteration methods. Numerical implementations show that Krylov subspace iteration methods such as GMRES, when accelerated by the SSOR‐like preconditioners, are efficient solvers for these classes of non‐Hermitian positive definite linear systems. The restarted block generalized minimum residual method (BGMRES) with deflated restarting (BGMRES‐DR) was proposed by Morgan to dump the negative effect of small eigenvalues from the convergence of the BGMRES method. More recently, Wu et al. introduced the shifted BGMRES method (BGMRES‐Sh) for solving the sequence of linear systems with multiple shifts and multiple right‐hand sides. In this paper, a new shifted block Krylov subspace algorithm that combines the characteristics of both the BGMRES‐DR and the BGMRES‐Sh methods is proposed. Moreover, our method is enhanced with a seed selection strategy to handle the case of almost linear dependence of the right‐hand sides. Numerical experiments illustrate the potential of the proposed method to solve efficiently the sequence of linear systems with multiple shifts and multiple right‐hand sides, with and without preconditioner, also against other state‐of‐the‐art solvers.  相似文献

A definition for functions of multidimensional arrays is presented. The definition is valid for third‐order tensors in the tensor t‐product formalism, which regards third‐order tensors as block circulant matrices. The tensor function definition is shown to have similar properties as standard matrix function definitions in fundamental scenarios. To demonstrate the definition's potential in applications, the notion of network communicability is generalized to third‐order tensors and computed for a small‐scale example via block Krylov subspace methods for matrix functions. A complexity analysis for these methods in the context of tensors is also provided.  相似文献

The squared Smith method is adapted to solve large-scale discrete-time Lyapunov matrix equations. The adaptation uses a Krylov subspace to generate the squared Smith iteration in a low-rank form. A restarting mechanism is employed to cope with the increase of memory storage of the Krylov basis. Theoretical aspects of the algorithm are presented. Several numerical illustrations are reported.  相似文献

We propose a numerical method for solving large‐scale differential symmetric Stein equations having low‐rank right constant term. Our approach is based on projection the given problem onto a Krylov subspace then solving the low dimensional matrix problem by using an integration method, and the original problem solution is built by using obtained low‐rank approximate solution. Using the extended block Arnoldi process and backward differentiation formula (BDF), we give statements of the approximate solution and corresponding residual. Some numerical results are given to show the efficiency of the proposed method.  相似文献

By introducing a variable substitution, we transform the two‐point boundary value problem of a third‐order ordinary differential equation into a system of two second‐order ordinary differential equations (ODEs). We discretize this order‐reduced system of ODEs by both sinc‐collocation and sinc‐Galerkin methods, and average these two discretized linear systems to obtain the target system of linear equations. We prove that the discrete solution resulting from the linear system converges exponentially to the true solution of the order‐reduced system of ODEs. The coefficient matrix of the linear system is of block two‐by‐two structure, and each of its blocks is a combination of Toeplitz and diagonal matrices. Because of its algebraic properties and matrix structures, the linear system can be effectively solved by Krylov subspace iteration methods such as GMRES preconditioned by block‐diagonal matrices. We demonstrate that the eigenvalues of certain approximation to the preconditioned matrix are uniformly bounded within a rectangle on the complex plane independent of the size of the discretized linear system, and we use numerical examples to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of this new approach. The block‐Lanczos method serves to compute a moderate number of eigenvalues and the corresponding invariant subspace of a symmetric matrix. In this paper, the convergence behavior of nonrestarted and restarted versions of the block‐Lanczos method is analyzed. For the nonrestarted version, we improve an estimate by Saad by means of a change of the auxiliary vector so that the new estimate is much more accurate in the case of clustered or multiple eigenvalues. For the restarted version, an estimate by Knyazev is generalized by extending our previous results on block steepest descent iterations and single‐vector restarted Krylov subspace iterations. The new estimates can also be reformulated and applied to invert‐block‐Lanczos methods for solving generalized matrix eigenvalue problems.  相似文献

The concept of a representative spectrum is introduced in the context of Newton‐Krylov methods. This concept allows a better understanding of convergence rate accelerating techniques for Krylov‐subspace iterative methods in the context of CFD applications of the Newton‐Krylov approach to iteratively solve sets of non‐linear equations. The dependence of the representative spectrum on several parameters such as mesh, Mach number or discretization techniques is studied and analyzed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the large sparse block two-by-two real nonsingular matrices, we establish a general framework of practical and efficient structured preconditioners through matrix transformation and matrix approximations. For the specific versions such as modified block Jacobi-type, modified block Gauss-Seidel-type, and modified block unsymmetric (symmetric) Gauss-Seidel-type preconditioners, we precisely describe their concrete expressions and deliberately analyze eigenvalue distributions and positive definiteness of the preconditioned matrices. Also, we show that when these structured preconditioners are employed to precondition the Krylov subspace methods such as GMRES and restarted GMRES, fast and effective iteration solvers can be obtained for the large sparse systems of linear equations with block two-by-two coefficient matrices. In particular, these structured preconditioners can lead to efficient and high-quality preconditioning matrices for some typical matrices from the real-world applications.

The solution of large systems of equations often involves the use of iterative solution procedures, mostly by means of Krylov subspace methods. The performance of these methods, however, strongly depends on the spectrum of the resulting system matrices, which is affected by the polynomial approximation function space. The current work shows that finite elements based on Bernstein polynomials yield particularly good performance in combination with commonly employed Krylov solvers. Adapting the basis of Astley-Leis infinite elements, the Bernstein polynomials may also be used for exterior acoustic simulations. The efficiency of such elements for interior acoustic problems as well as for sound radiation analyses is assessed. (© 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

For a class of block two-by-two systems of linear equations with certain skew-Hamiltonian coefficient matrices, we construct additive block diagonal preconditioning matrices and discuss the eigen-properties of the corresponding preconditioned matrices. The additive block diagonal preconditioners can be employed to accelerate the convergence rates of Krylov subspace iteration methods such as MINRES and GMRES. Numerical experiments show that MINRES preconditioned by the exact and the inexact additive block diagonal preconditioners are effective, robust and scalable solvers for the block two-by-two linear systems arising from the Galerkin finite-element discretizations of a class of distributed control problems.  相似文献

A deflated restarting Krylov subspace method for approximating a function of a matrix times a vector is proposed. In contrast to other Krylov subspace methods, the performance of the method in this paper is better. We further show that the deflating algorithm inherits the superlinear convergence property of its unrestarted counterpart for the entire function and present the results of numerical experiments.  相似文献

This paper introduces and presents theoretical analyses of constraint preconditioning via a Schilders'‐like factorization for nonsymmetric saddle‐point problems. We extend the Schilders' factorization of a constraint preconditioner to a nonsymmetric matrix by using a different factorization. The eigenvalue and eigenvector distributions of the preconditioned matrix are determined. The choices of the parameter matrices in the extended Schilders' factorization and the implementation of the preconditioning step are discussed. An upper bound on the degree of the minimum polynomial for the preconditioned matrix and the dimension of the corresponding Krylov subspace are determined, as well as the convergence behavior of a Krylov subspace method such as GMRES. Numerical experiments are presented. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this work, we propose a new method, termed as R‐CORK, for the numerical solution of large‐scale rational eigenvalue problems, which is based on a linearization and on a compact decomposition of the rational Krylov subspaces corresponding to this linearization. R‐CORK is an extension of the compact rational Krylov method (CORK) introduced very recently in the literature to solve a family of nonlinear eigenvalue problems that can be expressed and linearized in certain particular ways and which include arbitrary polynomial eigenvalue problems, but not arbitrary rational eigenvalue problems. The R‐CORK method exploits the structure of the linearized problem by representing the Krylov vectors in a compact form in order to reduce the cost of storage, resulting in a method with two levels of orthogonalization. The first level of orthogonalization works with vectors of the same size as the original problem, and the second level works with vectors of size much smaller than the original problem. Since vectors of the size of the linearization are never stored or orthogonalized, R‐CORK is more efficient from the point of view of memory and orthogonalization than the classical rational Krylov method applied directly to the linearization. Taking into account that the R‐CORK method is based on a classical rational Krylov method, to implement implicit restarting is also possible, and we show how to do it in a memory‐efficient way. Finally, some numerical examples are included in order to show that the R‐CORK method performs satisfactorily in practice.  相似文献

We construct a class of quasi‐Toeplitz splitting iteration methods to solve the two‐sided unsteady space‐fractional diffusion equations with variable coefficients. By making full use of the structural characteristics of the coefficient matrix, the method only requires computational costs of O(n log n) with n denoting the number of degrees of freedom. We develop an appropriate circulant matrix to replace the Toeplitz matrix as a preconditioner. We discuss the spectral properties of the quasi‐circulant splitting preconditioned matrix. Numerical comparisons with existing approaches show that the present method is both effective and efficient when being used as matrix splitting preconditioners for Krylov subspace iteration methods.
