Directional distance functions provide very flexible tools for investigating the performance of Decision Making Units (DMUs). Their flexibility relies on their ability to handle undesirable outputs and to account for non-discretionary inputs and/or outputs by fixing zero values in some elements of the directional vector.  and  indicate how the statistical properties of Farrell–Debreu type of radial efficiency measures can be transferred to directional distances. Moreover, robust versions of these distances are also available, for conditional and unconditional measures. B?din, Daraio, and Simar (2012) have shown how conditional radial distances are useful to investigate the effect of environmental factors on the production process. In this paper we develop the operational aspects for computing conditional and unconditional directional distances and their robust versions, in particular when some of the elements of the directional vector are fixed at zero. After that, we show how the approach of B?din et al. (2012) can be adapted in a directional distance framework, including bandwidth selection and two-stage regression of conditional efficiency scores. Finally, we suggest a procedure, based on bootstrap techniques, for testing the significance of environmental factors on directional efficiency scores. The procedure is illustrated through simulated and real data.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a technique for evaluating relative efficiencies of peer decision making units (DMUs) which have multiple performance measures. These performance measures have to be classified as either inputs or outputs in DEA. DEA assumes that higher output levels and/or lower input levels indicate better performance. This study is motivated by the fact that there are performance measures (or factors) that cannot be classified as an input or output, because they have target levels with which all DMUs strive to achieve in order to attain the best practice, and any deviations from the target levels are not desirable and may indicate inefficiency. We show how such performance measures with target levels can be incorporated in DEA. We formulate a new production possibility set by extending the standard DEA production possibility set under variable returns-to-scale assumption based on a set of axiomatic properties postulated to suit the case of targeted factors. We develop three efficiency measures by extending the standard radial, slacks-based, and Nerlove–Luenberger measures. We illustrate the proposed model and efficiency measures by applying them to the efficiency evaluation of 36 US universities.  相似文献

In the data envelopment analysis (DEA) efficiency literature, qualitative characterizations of returns to scale (increasing, constant, or decreasing) are most common. In economics it is standard to use the scale elasticity as a quantification of scale properties for a production function representing efficient operations. Our contributions are to review DEA practices, apply the concept of scale elasticity from economic multi-output production theory to DEA piecewise linear frontier production functions, and develop formulas for scale elasticity for radial projections of inefficient observations in the relative interior of fully dimensional facets. The formulas are applied to both constructed and real data and show the differences between scale elasticities for the two valid projections (input and output orientations). Instead of getting qualitative measures of returns to scale only as was done earlier in the DEA literature, we now get a quantitative range of scale elasticity values providing more information to policy-makers.  相似文献

The present study extends prior research on data envelopment analysis (DEA)-based returns to scale in view of the fact that the standard methods are very restrictive. The extension is made in the context of the directional technology distance function that generalizes the Shephard input and output distance functions. The two main results in this extended setting are as follows. First, we show how Banker's most productive scale size (MPSS) concept is characterized. Second, we obtain scale elasticity measures and examine the properties and the relationships with standard scale elasticity measures.  相似文献

Estimation of efficiency of firms in a non-competitive market characterized by heterogeneous inputs and outputs along with their varying prices is questionable when factor-based technology sets are used in data envelopment analysis (DEA). In this scenario, a value-based technology becomes an appropriate reference technology against which efficiency can be assessed. In this contribution, the value-based models of Tone (2002) are extended in a directional DEA set up to develop new directional cost- and revenue-based measures of efficiency, which are then decomposed into their respective directional value-based technical and allocative efficiencies. These new directional value-based measures are more general, and include the existing value-based measures as special cases. These measures satisfy several desirable properties of an ideal efficiency measure. These new measures are advantageous over the existing ones in terms of (1) their ability to satisfy the most important property of translation invariance; (2) choices over the use of suitable direction vectors in handling negative data; and (3) flexibility in providing the decision makers with the option of specifying preferable direction vectors to incorporate their preferences. Finally, under the condition of no prior unit price information, a directional value-based measure of profit inefficiency is developed for firms whose underlying objectives are profit maximization. For an illustrative empirical application, our new measures are applied to a real-life data set of 50 US banks to draw inferences about the production correspondence of banking industry.  相似文献

We deal with the problem of an investor who is using a mean-risk model for accessing efficiency of investment opportunities. Our investor employs value at risk on several risk levels at the same time which corresponds to the approach called risk shaping. We review several data envelopment analysis (DEA) models which can deal with negative data. We show that a diversification–consistent extension of the DEA models based on a directional distance measure can be used to identify the Pareto–Koopmans efficient investment opportunities. We derive reformulations as chance constrained, nonlinear and mixed-integer problems under particular assumptions. In the numerical study, we access efficiency of US industry representative portfolios based on empirical distribution of random returns. We employ bootstrap and jackknife to investigate the empirical properties of the efficiency estimators.  相似文献

In this paper we focus on scale elasticity measure based on directional distance function for multi-output–multi-input technologies, explore its fundamental properties and show its equivalence with the input oriented and output oriented scale elasticity measures. We also establish duality relationship between the scale elasticity measure based on the directional distance function with scale elasticity measure based on the profit function. Finally, we discuss the estimation issues of the scale elasticity based on the directional distance function via the DEA estimator.  相似文献

Economic activity produces not only desirable outputs but also undesirable outputs. Undesirable outputs are usually omitted from efficiency assessments (i.e., applications of Data Envelopment Analysis) which fail to express the true production process. The directional distance function model has been used for handling asymmetrically both desirable and undesirable outputs in the assessment process. In the present paper, we apply a generalized directional distance function to measure the efficiency of the health systems of 171 countries. We incorporate both desirable and undesirable outputs into the efficiency assessment without transforming the latter type of outputs into inputs or into their inverse form, as is done in most of the extant studies that deal with the measurement of health efficiency. The methodology that we apply introduces a modified definition of the efficiency score which yields results consistent with those obtained from radial DEA models. In addition, our results are independent of the length of the direction vector.  相似文献

Nonparametric conditional efficiency measures: asymptotic properties   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Cazals et al. (J. Econom. 106: 1–25, 2002), Daraio and Simar (J. Prod. Anal. 24: 93–121, 2005; Advanced Robust and Nonparametric Methods in Efficiency Analysis, 2007a; J. Prod. Anal. 28: 13–32, 2007b) developed a conditional frontier model which incorporates the environmental factors into measuring the efficiency of a production process in a fully nonparametric setup. They also provided the corresponding nonparametric efficiency measures: conditional FDH estimator, conditional DEA estimator. The two estimators have been applied in the literature without any theoretical background about their statistical properties. The aim of this paper is to provide an asymptotic analysis (i.e. asymptotic consistency and limit sampling distribution) of the conditional FDH and conditional DEA estimators.  相似文献

This paper develops a new radial super-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA) model, which allows input–output variables to take both negative and positive values. Compared with existing DEA models capable of dealing with negative data, the proposed model can rank the efficient DMUs and is feasible no matter whether the input–output data are non-negative or not. It successfully addresses the infeasibility issue of both the conventional radial super-efficiency DEA model and the Nerlove–Luenberger super-efficiency DEA model under the assumption of variable returns to scale. Moreover, it can project each DMU onto the super-efficiency frontier along a suitable direction and never leads to worse target inputs or outputs than the original ones for inefficient DMUs. Additional advantages of the proposed model include monotonicity, units invariance and output translation invariance. Two numerical examples demonstrate the practicality and superiority of the new model.  相似文献

For measuring technical efficiency relative to a log-linear technology, a generalized multiplicative directional distance function (GMDDF) is developed using the framework of multiplicative directional distance function (MDDF). Furthermore, a computational procedure is suggested for its estimation. The GMDDF serves as a comprehensive measure of efficiency in revealing Pareto-efficient targets as it accounts for all possible input and output slacks. This measure satisfies several desirable properties of an ideal efficiency measure such as strong monotonicity, unit invariance, translation invariance, and positive affine transformation invariance. This measure can be easily implemented in any standard DEA software and provides the decision makers with the option of specifying preferable direction vectors for incorporating their decision-making preferences. Finally, to demonstrate the ready applicability of our proposed measure, an illustrative empirical analysis is conducted based on real-life data set of 20 hardware computer companies in India.  相似文献

This paper uses a mechanistic frontier approach as a reference to evaluate the ability of conventional parametric (SFA) and non-parametric (DEA) frontier approaches for analyzing economic–environmental trade-offs. Conventional frontier approaches are environmentally adjusted through incorporating the materials balance principle. The analysis is worked out for the Flemish pig finishing case, which is both representative and didactic. Results show that, on average, SFA and DEA yield adequate economic–environmental trade-offs. Both methods are good estimators for technical efficiency. Cost allocative and environmental allocative efficiency scores are less robust, due to the well-known methodological advantages and disadvantages of SFA and DEA. For particular firms, SFA, DEA and the mechanistic approach may yield different economic–environmental trade-offs. One has therefore to be careful when using conventional frontier approaches for firm-specific decision support. The mechanistic approach allows for optimizing performances per average present finisher, which is the production unit in pig finishing. Conventional frontier methods do not allow for this optimization since the number of average present finishers varies along the production functions. Since the mechanistic production function is based on underlying growth, feed uptake and mortality functions, additional firm-specific indicators can also be calculated at each point of the production function.  相似文献

This paper extends the cross-efficiency evaluation for use with directional distance functions. Cross-efficiency evaluation has been developed with oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models, so the extension proposed here is aimed at providing a peer-evaluation of decision making units (DMUs) based on measures that account for the inefficiency both in inputs and in outputs simultaneously. We explore the duality relations regarding the models of directional distance functions and define the cross-efficiencies on the basis of the equivalences with some fractional programming problems. Finally, we address in this new context the problem with the alternate optima for the weights and propose some models that implement different alternative secondary goals.  相似文献

We contrast the different approaches of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) to superficially similar problems. The concepts of efficiency and Pareto optimality in DEA and MCDM are compared, and a link is demonstrated between the ratio efficiency definition in DEA and a distance measure in input–output space based on linear value functions. The problem of weight sensitivity is discussed in terms of value measurement theory, highlighting the assumptions needed during model formulation in order to justify the use of value judgements to constrain weight flexibility in DEA. Finally, we propose a stochastic approach, in which a probability distribution on efficiencies can be derived for each decision making unit, as a basis for comparison.  相似文献

In DEA, we have two measures of technical efficiency with different characteristics: radial and non-radial. In this paper we compile them into a composite model called “epsilon-based measure (EBM).” For this purpose we introduce two parameters which connect radial and non-radial models. These two parameters are obtained from the newly defined affinity index between inputs or outputs along with principal component analysis on the affinity matrix. Thus, EBM takes into account diversity of input/output data and their relative importance for measuring technical efficiency.  相似文献

Profit,Directional Distance Functions,and Nerlovian Efficiency   总被引:26,自引:0,他引:26
The directional technology distance function is introduced, given an interpretation as a min-max, and compared with other functional representations of the technology including the Shephard input and output distance functions and the McFadden gauge function. A dual correspondence is developed between the directional technology distance function and the profit function, and it is shown that all previous dual correspondences are special cases of this correspondence. We then show how Nerlovian (profit-based) efficiency measures can be computed using the directional technology distance function.  相似文献

In this paper, a directional distance approach is proposed to deal with network DEA problems in which the processes may generate not only desirable final outputs but also undesirable outputs. The proposed approach is applied to the problem of modelling and benchmarking airport operations. The corresponding network DEA model considers two process (Aircraft Movement and Aircraft Loading) with two final outputs (Annual Passenger Movement and Annual Cargo handled), one intermediate product (Aircraft Traffic Movements) and two undesirable outputs (Number of Delayed Flights and Accumulated Flight Delays). The proposed approach has been applied to Spanish airports data for year 2008 comparing the computed directional distance efficiency scores with those obtained using a conventional, single-process directional distance function approach. From this comparison, it can be concluded that the proposed network DEA approach has more discriminatory power than its single-process counterpart, uncovering more inefficiencies and providing more valid results.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a new measure of input allocative efficiency that we estimate using directional distance functions. Our new measure compares the gain in output if a firm reduces technical inefficiency for the direct production possibility set and the gain in output if the firm reduces technical inefficiency for the indirect production possibility set. Because the directional distance function uses a translated origin, the gain in output from an optimal reallocation of inputs can be estimated for non-radial expansions in output. We estimate efficiency for Japanese banks during 1992–1999. The gains in outputs from reducing allocative inefficiency by reallocating inputs are greater than the gains in outputs that can be attained by reducing technical inefficiency.  相似文献
