The structure of a unital linear map on hermitian matrices with the property that it preserves the set of invertible hermitian matrices with fixed indefinite inertia is examined. In this paper we prove some characterizations of the matrix orthogonal polynomials whose derivatives are also orthogonal, which generalize other known ones in the scalar case. In particular, we prove that the corresponding orthogonality matrix functional is characterized by a Pearson-type equation with two matrix polynomials of degree not greater than 2 and 1. The proofs are given for a general sequence of matrix orthogonal polynomials, not necessarily associated with a hermitian functional. We give several examples of non-diagonalizable positive definite weight matrices satisfying a Pearson-type equation, which show that the previous results are non-trivial even in the positive definite case.A detailed analysis is made for the class of matrix functionals which satisfy a Pearson-type equation whose polynomial of degree not greater than 2 is scalar. We characterize the Pearson-type equations of this kind that yield a sequence of matrix orthogonal polynomials, and we prove that these matrix orthogonal polynomials satisfy a second order differential equation even in the non-hermitian case. Finally, we prove and improve a conjecture of Durán and Grünbaum concerning the triviality of this class in the positive definite case, while some examples show the non-triviality for hermitian functionals which are not positive definite.  相似文献

We prove a convexity theorem on a generalized numerical range that combines and generalizes the following results: 1) Friedland and Loewy's result on the existence of a nonzero matrix with multiple first eigenvalue in subspaces of hermitian matrices, 2) Bohnenblust's result on joint positive definiteness of hermitian matrices, 3) the Toeplitz-Hausdorff Theorem on the convexity of the classical numerical range and its various generalizations by Au-Yeung, Berger, Brickman, Halmos, Poon, Tsing and Westwick.

This paper is concerned with asymptotic stability of a system of reaction-diffusion equations which is expressed in terms of Volterra integrals, under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The effect of diffusion and delays on the stability of the system are analyzed, and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of positive solutions of the corresponding steady-state problem. Their global attraction with respect to nonnegative solutions of the time-dependent system is discussed. The main tools are Lyapunov functionals, positive definite kernels, and Laplace transforms.  相似文献

This paper adds to the growing body of research happening in multivariable calculus by examining scalar and vector line integrals. This paper contributes in two ways. First, this paper provides a conceptual analysis for both types of line integrals in terms of how theoretical ways of thinking about definite integrals summarized from the research literature might be applied to understanding line integrals specifically. Second, this paper provides an initial investigation of students’ understandings of line integral expressions, and connects these understanding to the theoretical ways of thinking drawn from the literature. One key finding from the empirical part is that several students appeared to understand individual pieces of the integral expression based on one way of thinking, such as adding up pieces or anti-derivatives, while trying to understand the overall integral expression through a different way of thinking, such as area under a curve.  相似文献

A certain class of definite integrals is considered in which the integrand consists of a one-signed function together with another function which has a one-signed derivative in a certain interval. By examining the Cauchy form of the remainder, sets of bounds are developed which have a certain optimum property. The integrals may be multi-dimensional. The Ostrowski-Reich theorem states that for a system Ax =b of linear equations with A nonsingular, if A is hermitian and if the diagonal of A is positive, then the SOR method converges for each relaxation parameter in (0,2) if and only if A is positive definite. This is actually a special case of the Householder-John theorem, which states that for A=M?N with A,M nonsingular, if A is hermitian and M1+N is positive definite, then M?1N is a convergent matrix if and only if A is positive definite. Our purposes here are to generalize the Householder-John theorem and to provide an insight into how and why the SOR method can converge. As a result the Ostrowski-Reich theorem is extended in two directions; one is when A is hermitian but the diagonal of A is not necessarily positive, so that A is not necessarily positive definite, and the other is when A+A1 is positive definite but A is not necessarily hermitian. In the process, several other convergence results are obtained for general splittings of A. However, no claims are made concerning the case in which the convergence results obtained here can be applied to practical situations.  相似文献

In many seemingly diverse physical contexts (including, for example, certain radiation field problems, studies of crystallographic minimal surfaces, the theory of scattering of acoustic or electromagnetic waves by means of an elliptic disk, studies of elliptical crack problems in fracture mechanics, and so on), a remarkably large number of general families of elliptic-type integrals, and indeed also many definite integrals of such families with respect to their modulus (or complementary modulus), are known to arise naturally. Motivated essentially by these and many other potential avenues of their applications, we present here a systematic account of the theory of a certain family of incomplete elliptic integrals in a unified and generalized manner. By means of the familiar Riemann–Liouville fractional differintegral operators, we obtain several explicit hypergeometric representations and apply these representations with a view to deriving various associated definite integrals, not only with respect to the modulus (or complementary modulus), but also with respect to the amplitude of the incomplete elliptic integrals involved therein.  相似文献

Elliptic-type integrals have their importance and potential in certain problems in radiation physics and nuclear technology. A number of earlier works on the subject contains several interesting unifications and generalizations of some significant families of elliptic-type integrals. The present paper is intended to obtain certain new theorems on generating functions. The results obtained in this paper are of manifold generality and basic in nature. Beside deriving various known and new elliptic-type integrals and their generalizations these theorems can be used to evaluate various Euler-type integrals involving a number of generating functions.   相似文献
