The sharp Sobolev inequality and the Banchoff-Pohl inequality on surfaces   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Let be a complete two dimensional simply connected Riemannian manifold with Gaussian curvature . If is a compactly supported function of bounded variation on , then satisfies the Sobolev inequality

Conversely, letting be the characteristic function of a domain recovers the sharp form of the isoperimetric inequality for simply connected surfaces with . Therefore this is the Sobolev inequality ``equivalent' to the isoperimetric inequality for this class of surfaces. This is a special case of a result that gives the equivalence of more general isoperimetric inequalities and Sobolev inequalities on surfaces.

Under the same assumptions on , if is a closed curve and is the winding number of about , then the Sobolev inequality implies

which is an extension of the Banchoff-Pohl inequality to simply connected surfaces with curvature .

A generalization of Kwack's theorem to the infinite dimensional case is obtained. We consider a holomorphic map from into , where is a hypersurface in a complex Banach manifold and is a hyperbolic Banach space. Under various assumptions on , and we show that can be extended to a holomorphic map from into . Moreover, it is proved that an increasing union of pseudoconvex domains containing no complex lines has the Hartogs extension property.

Let denote the set of all -roots of the identity in a Lie group . We show that is always an embedded submanifold of , having the conjugacy classes of its elements as open submanifolds. These conjugacy classes are examples of -symmetric spaces and we show, more generally, that every -symmetric space of a Lie group is a covering manifold of an embedded submanifold of . We compute also the Hessian of the inclusions of and into , relative to the natural connection on the domain and to the symmetric connection on .

Suppose that is harmonic on an open half-ball in such that the origin 0 is the centre of the flat part of the boundary . Under somewhat stronger hypotheses, the conclusion is that . These results strengthen recent theorems of Baouendi and Rothschild. While the flat boundary set can be replaced by a spherical surface, it cannot in general be replaced by a smooth -dimensional manifold.

Assuming that these groups are finite, we derive, under certain restrictions on and , a formula for the order of the subgroup of of -invariant elements. As a corollary, we obtain a simple formula relating the orders of , and when is a quadratic extension and is the twist of by the non-trivial character of .

This paper gives a new proof of a result of Geoghegan and Mihalik which states that whenever a contractible open -manifold which is not homeomorphic to is a covering space of an -manifold and either or and is irreducible, then the group of covering translations injects into the homeotopy group of .

We characterize those pairs such that, for each harmonic function on which is uniformly continuous on , there is a sequence of harmonic polynomials which converges to uniformly on . As an immediate corollary we obtain a characterization of Mergelyan pairs for harmonic functions.

For a prime divisor of the order of a finite group , we present the set of -subgroups generating . In particular, we present the set of primary subgroups of generating the last member of the lower central series of . The proof is based on the Frobenius Normal -Complement Theorem and basic properties of minimal nonnilpotent groups. Let be a group and a group-theoretic property inherited by subgroups and epimorphic images such that all minimal non--subgroups (-subgroups) of are not nilpotent. Then (see the lemma), if is generated by all -subgroups of it follows that is a -group.

We shall use a -algebra approach to study operators of the form where is subnormal and is normal. We shall determine the spectral properties for these operators, and find the minimal normal extension and the dual operator. We also give a necessary condition for to contain a compact operator and a sufficient condition for the algebraic equivalence of and .

We also consider the existence of a homomorphism satisfying . We shall characterize the operators such that exists for every operator .

The problem of when is unitarily equivalent to is considered. Complete results are given when and are positive operators with finite multiplicity functions and has compact self-commutator. Some examples are also given.

Let be the usual Hardy operator, i.e., . We prove that the operator is bounded and has a bounded inverse on the weighted spaces for and . Moreover, by using these inequalities we derive a somewhat generalized form of some well-known fractional Hardy type inequalities and also of a result due to Bennett-DeVore-Sharpley, where the usual Lorentz norm is replaced by an equivalent expression. Examples show that the restrictions in the theorems are essential.

We characterize when the product is a generalized derivation in the cases when the ring is the algebra of all bounded operators on a Banach space , and when is a -algebra . We use these characterizations to compute the commutant of the range of .

We prove that the space of compact operators on a Banach space is an -ideal in the space of bounded operators if and only if has the metric compact approximation property (MCAP), and is an -ideal in for all separable subspaces of having the MCAP. Given a -linear operator from a product of spaces into a Banach space , our main result proves the equivalence between being completely continuous, having an -valued separately continuous extension to the product of the biduals and having a regular associated polymeasure. It is well known that, in the linear case, these are also equivalent to being weakly compact, and that, for , being weakly compact implies the conditions above but the converse fails.
