We establish the following result.

Theorem. Let be a integrable bounded group representation whose Arveson spectrum is scattered. Then the subspace generated by all eigenvectors of the dual representation is dense in Moreover, the closed subalgebra generated by the operators () is semisimple.

If, in addition, does not contain any copy of then the subspace spanned by all eigenvectors of is dense in Hence, the representation is almost periodic whenever it is strongly continuous.

It is shown that is a compact, locally compact, second countable, -space, that is an algebraic lattice isomorphic to the lattice of open subsets of , and that is isomorphic to the algebra of continuous, complex functions on . If is semisimple, then is isomorphic to the algebra of continuous, complex functions on , the primitive ideal space of . If is strongly maximal, then the sum of two closed ideals of is closed.

Let be a representation-finite algebra. We show that a finite dimensional -module degenerates to another -module if and only if the inequalities hold for all -modules . Rules and reals     
A ``-rule" is a sequence of pairwise disjoint sets , each of cardinality and subsets . A subset (a ``real') follows a rule if for infinitely many , .

Two obvious cardinal invariants arise from this definition: the least number of reals needed to follow all -rules, , and the least number of -rules with no real that follows all of them, .

Call a bounded rule if is a -rule for some . Let be the least cardinality of a set of bounded rules with no real following all rules in the set.

We prove the following: and for all . However, in the Laver model, .

An application of is in Section 3: we show that below one can find proper extensions of dense independent families which preserve a pre-assigned group of automorphisms. The original motivation for discovering rules was an attempt to construct a maximal homogeneous family over . The consistency of such a family is still open.

Let be a non-trivial finite Galois extension of a field . In this paper we investigate the role that valuation-theoretic properties of play in determining the non-triviality of the relative Brauer group, , of over . In particular, we show that when is finitely generated of transcendence degree 1 over a -adic field and is a prime dividing , then the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the -primary component, , is non-trivial, (ii) is infinite, and (iii) there exists a valuation of trivial on such that divides the order of the decomposition group of at .

Suppose is a maximal ideal of a commutative integral domain and that some power of is finitely generated. We show that is finitely generated in each of the following cases: (i) is of height one, (ii) is integrally closed and , (iii) is a monoid domain over a field , where is a cancellative torsion-free monoid such that , and is the maximal ideal . We extend the above results to ideals of a reduced ring such that is Noetherian. We prove that a reduced ring is Noetherian if each prime ideal of has a power that is finitely generated. For each with , we establish existence of a -dimensional integral domain having a nonfinitely generated maximal ideal of height such that is -generated.

Let be a planar regular region whose Schottky double has genus and set . For fixed we determine the range of the function where is the Riemann theta function on . Let be an algebra over a field and a finite group of automorphisms and anti-automorphisms of . We prove that if satisfies an essential -polynomial identity of degree , then the -codimensions of are exponentially bounded and satisfies a polynomial identity whose degree is bounded by an explicit function of . As a consequence we show that if is an algebra with involution satisfying a -polynomial identity of degree , then the -codimensions of are exponentially bounded; this gives a new proof of a theorem of Amitsur stating that in this case must satisfy a polynomial identity and we can now give an upper bound on the degree of this identity.

Diamond, Pomerance and Rubel (1981) proved that there are subsets of the complex plane such that for any two entire functions and if , then . Baraducci and Dikranjan showed in 1993 that the continuum hypothesis (CH) implies the existence of a similar set for the class of continuous nowhere constant functions from to , while it follows from the results of Burke and Ciesielski (1997) and Ciesielski and Shelah that the existence of such a set is not provable in ZFC. In this paper we will show that for several well-behaved subclasses of , including the class of differentiable functions and the class of absolutely continuous functions, a set with the above property can be constructed in ZFC. We will also prove the existence of a set with the dual property that for any if , then .

We denote the reduction number of by , which is the smallest integer such that for some reduction of In this paper we give an upper bound on in terms of numerical invariants which are related with the Hilbert coefficients of when is Cohen-Macaulay.
