We discuss an explicit example of a map of the plane R 2 with a nontrivial attracting set. In particular, we are concerned with the concept of rotation number introduced by Poincaré for maps of the circle and its subsequent extension by Birkhoff to maps of the annulus. The use of rotation number allows nontrivial attractors to be distinguished. The map we discuss has an attracting set containing a set of orbits with infinitely many different rotation numbers. We obtain the map by considering an Euler iteration of a family of vector fields originally described by Arnold and find that the resulting Euler map undergoes some bifurcations which are analogous to those of the family of vector fields. Specifically, there are Hopf bifurcations where changes of stability of a fixed point result in the creation of an attracting circle. The circle which grows from the fixed point is then shown to undergo structural changes giving nontrivial attracting sets. This arises from Euler map behaviour for which the corresponding vector field behaviour is a heteroclinic saddle connection. It is possible to give an explicit trapping region for the Euler map which contains the attracting set and to describe some of its properties. Finally, an analogy is drawn with attracting sets which arise for forced oscillators.  相似文献

New sufficient conditions for the existence of generalized Hopf bifurcations are given in the context of asymptotically compact dynamical or semidynamical systems on a metric space. These conditions weaken the hypotheses of previous contributions to the subject. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000) 34K18, 74H60  相似文献

We illustrate and discuss the computer-assisted study (approximation and visualization) of two-dimensional (un)stable manifolds of steady states and saddle-type limit cycles for flows in R n . Our investigation highlights a number of computational issues arising in this task, along with our solutions and “quick-fixes” for some of these problems. Two examples illustrative of both successes and shortcomings of our current approach are presented. Representative “snapshots” demonstrate the dependence of two-dimensional invariant manifolds on a bifurcation parameter as well as their interactions. Such approximation and visualization studies are a necessary component of the computer-assisted study and understanding of global bifurcations. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary Engineering and physical systems are often modeled as nonlinear differential equations with a vector λ of parameters and operated at a stable equilibrium. However, as the parameters λ vary from some nominal value λ0, the stability of the equilibrium can be lost in a saddle-node or Hopf bifurcation. The spatial relation in parameter space of λ0 to the critical set of parameters at which the stable equilibrium bifurcates determines the robustness of the system stability to parameter variations and is important in applications. We propose computing a parameter vector λ* at which the stable equilibrium bifurcates which is locally closest in parameter space to the nominal parameters λ0. Iterative and direct methods for computing these locally closest bifurcations are described. The methods are extensions of standard, one-parameter methods of computing bifurcations and are based on formulas for the normal vector to hypersurfaces of the bifurcation set. Conditions on the hypersurface curvature are given to ensure the local convergence of the iterative method and the regularity of solutions of the direct method. Formulas are derived for the curvature of the saddle node bifurcation set. The methods are extended to transcritical and pitchfork bifurcations and parametrized maps, and the sensitivity to λ0 of the distance to a closest bifurcation is derived. The application of the methods is illustrated by computing the proximity to the closest voltage collapse instability of a simple electric power system.  相似文献

The Falkner-Skan equation is a reversible three-dimensional system of ordinary differential equations with two distinguished straight-line trajectories which form a heteroclinic loop between fixed points at infinity. We showed in the previous paper (1995, J. Differential Equations119, 336-394) that at positive integer values of the parameter λ there are bifurcations creating large sets of periodic and other interesting trajectories. Here we show that all but two of these trajectories are destroyed in another sequence of bifurcations as λ, and by considering topological invariants and orderings on certain manifolds we obtain unusually detailed information about the sequences of bifurcations which can occur.  相似文献

The mixing of different types of bifurcations, i.e. supercritical Andronov–Hopf (SAH), double loop (DL) and saddle-loop (SL) bifurcations in the vicinity of their total annihilation, is examined on the highly nonlinear six-variable model for the Bray–Liebhafsky (BL) oscillatory reaction under continuously well-stirred tank reactor (CSTR) conditions. For this kind of the reaction system where the law of mass conservation is additional constraint that must be satisfied and where because of that, some simple bifurcations cannot be formed independently to the others, the considered transformations of the bifurcations are particularly important. That is why as the control parameters for bifurcation analysis, the specific flow rate (j0), as well as the inflow hydrogen peroxide concentration (h = [H2O2]in), were used. The complex bifurcations obtained from numerical simulations are compared with some experimental results. It was shown that these complex bifurcations cannot be easily recognized in experimental investigations without knowing their evolution.  相似文献

The generic isolated bifurcations for one-parameter families of smooth planar vector fields {Xμ} which give rise to periodic orbits are: the Andronov-Hopf bifurcation, the bifurcation from a semi-stable periodic orbit, the saddle-node loop bifurcation and the saddle loop bifurcation. In this paper we obtain the dominant term of the asymptotic behaviour of the period of the limit cycles appearing in each of these bifurcations in terms of μ when we are near the bifurcation. The method used to study the first two bifurcations is also used to solve the same problem in another two situations: a generalization of the Andronov-Hopf bifurcation to vector fields starting with a special monodromic jet; and the Hopf bifurcation at infinity for families of polynomial vector fields.  相似文献

In the present paper we study certain characteristic features associated with bifurcations of chaos in a finite dimensional dynamical system – Murali–Lakshmanan–Chua (MLC) circuit equation and an infinite dimensional dynamical system – one-way coupled map lattice (OCML) system. We characterize chaotic attractors at various bifurcations in terms of σn(q) – the variance of fluctuations of coarse-grained local expansion rates of nearby orbits. For all chaotic attractors the σn(q) versus q plot exhibits a peak at q=qα. Additional peaks, however, are found only just before and just after the bifurcations of chaos. We show power-law variation of maximal Lyapunov exponent near intermittency and sudden widening bifurcations. Linear variation is observed for band-merging bifurcation. We characterize weak and strong chaos using probability distribution of k-step difference of a state variable.  相似文献

This contribution discusses the non-linear dynamic behaviour of a rotor system equipped with a compliant seal. The investigated model consists of a Laval-Rotor and a stiff seal ring which is visco-elastically supported. The fluid forces stemming from the turbulent incompressible lubricant film are accounted for by the non-linear Muszynska model. The added compliance leads to an improved stability behaviour of the steady state. Within the post-critical regime the additional compliance gives rise to bifurcations of the stationary vibration: Hopf bifurcations lead to limit cycles which can loose their stability via Neimark-Sacker bifurcations. In this paper, we consider a regulated logistic growth model. We first consider the linear stability and the existence of a Hopf bifurcation. We show that Hopf bifurcations occur as the delay τ passes through critical values. Then, using the normal form theory and center manifold reduction, we derive the explicit algorithm determining the direction of Hopf bifurcations and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions. Finally, numerical simulation results are given to support the theoretical predictions.  相似文献

Bifurcations for a predator-prey system with two delays   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this paper, a predator-prey system with two delays is investigated. By choosing the sum τ of two delays as a bifurcation parameter, we show that Hopf bifurcations can occur as τ crosses some critical values. By deriving the equation describing the flow on the center manifold, we can determine the direction of the Hopf bifurcations and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions. In addition, special attention is paid to the global continuation of local Hopf bifurcations. Using a global Hopf bifurcation result of [J. Wu, Symmetric functional differential equations and neural networks with memory, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 350 (1998) 4799-4838], we may show the global existence of periodic solutions.  相似文献

Summary It is now well known that the number of parameters and symmetries of an equation affects the bifurcation structure of that equation. The bifurcation behavior of reaction-diffusion equations on certain domains with certain boundary conditions isnongeneric in the sense that the bifurcation of steady states in these equations is not what would be expected if one considered only the number of parameters in the equations and the type of symmetries of the equations. This point was made previously in work by Fujii, Mimura, and Nishiura [6] and Armbruster and Dangelmayr [1], who considered reaction-diffusion equations on an interval with Neumann boundary conditions. As was pointed out by Crawford et al. [5], the source of this nongenericity is that reaction-diffusion equations are invariant under translations and reflections of the domain and, depending on boundary conditions, may naturally and uniquely be extended to larger domains withlarger symmetry groups. These extra symmetries are the source of the nongenericity. In this paper we consider in detail the steady-state bifurcations of reaction-diffusion equations defined on the hemisphere with Neumann boundary conditions along the equator. Such equations have a naturalO(2)-symmetry but may be extended to the full sphere where the natural symmetry group isO(3). We also determine a large class of partial differential equations and domains where this kind of extension is possible for both Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions.  相似文献

A two-dimensional piecewise linear continuous model is analyzed. It reflects the dynamics occurring in a circuit proposed as chaos generator, in a simplified case. The parameter space is investigated in order to classify completely regions of existence of stable cycles, and regions associated with chaotic behaviors. The border collision bifurcation curves are analytically detected, as well as the degenerate flip bifurcations of k-cycles and the homoclinic bifurcations occurring in cyclic chaotic regions leading to chaos in one-piece.  相似文献

The onset of instability in autonomous dynamical systems (ADS) of ordinary differential equations is investigated. Binary, ternary and quaternary ADS are taken into account. The stability frontier of the spectrum is analyzed. Conditions necessary and sufficient for the occurring of Hopf, Hopf–Steady, Double-Hopf and unsteady aperiodic bifurcations—in closed form—and conditions guaranteeing the absence of unsteady bifurcations via symmetrizability, are obtained. The continuous triopoly Cournot game of mathematical economy is taken into account and it is shown that the ternary ADS governing the Nash equilibrium stability, is symmetrizable. The onset of Hopf bifurcations in rotatory thermal hydrodynamics is studied and the Hopf bifurcation number (threshold that the Taylor number crosses at the onset of Hopf bifurcations) is obtained.

In this paper, we consider a model described the survival of red blood cells in animal. Its dynamics are studied in terms of local and global Hopf bifurcations. We show that a sequence of Hopf bifurcations occur at the positive equilibrium as the delay crosses some critical values. Using the reduced system on the center manifold, we also obtain that the periodic orbits bifurcating from the positive equilibrium are stable in the center manifold, and all Hopf bifurcations are supercritical. Further, particular attention is focused on the continuation of local Hopf bifurcation. We show that global Hopf bifurcations exist after the second critical value of time delay.  相似文献

A simple model for the angle-dependent interaction betweenC 60 molecules in the face-centered cubic lattice is proposed. The bifurcations of the solutions of the nonlinear integral equations for orientational distribution functions in the mean-field approximation are analyzed, and the orientational phase transition in solidC 60 is described. The quantitative results for the orientational phase transition agree with the experimental data. In this paper, we consider a simple discrete two-neuron network model with three delays. The characteristic equation of the linearized system at the zero solution is a polynomial equation involving very high order terms. We derive some sufficient and necessary conditions on the asymptotic stability of the zero solution. Regarding the eigenvalues of connection matrix as the bifurcation parameters, we also consider the existence of three types of bifurcations: Fold bifurcations, Flip bifurcations, and Neimark–Sacker bifurcations. The stability and direction of these three kinds of bifurcations are studied by applying the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. Our results are a very important generalization to the previous works in this field.  相似文献

Research on the bifurcations of the multiple limit cycles for a parametrically and externally excited mechanical system is presented in this paper. The original mechanical system is first transformed to the averaged equation in the Cartesian form, which is in the form of a Z2-symmetric perturbed polynomial Hamiltonian system of degree 5. Then, using the bifurcation theory of planar dynamical system and the method of detection function, the bifurcations of the multiple limit cycles of the system are investigated and the configurations of compound eyes are also obtained.  相似文献

We study multiple bifurcations in a system of reaction–diffusion equations defined on a unit square with Robin boundary conditions. First we investigate linear stabilities of the system at the uniform steady state solution. Then we discuss how multiple bifurcations can be generated by mode interactions of the system, and how these multiple bifurcations can be preserved in the associated discrete system. A continuation-unsymmetric Lanczos algorithm is described to trace discrete solution curves. Numerical experiments on the Brusselator equations are reported.  相似文献

We investigate a scenario for the creation of irregular chaotic attractors in Chua’s system. We show that irregular attractors in Chua’s system are created by those and only those mechanisms that characterize Lorenz, Rössler, and other dissipative nonlinear systems described by ordinary differential equations. These mechanisms include cascades of Feigenbaum period doubling bifurcations, subharmonic cascades of cycle bifurcations in Sharkovskii’s order, and homoclinic cascades of bifurcations.  相似文献
