Under minimal requirements on the coefficients and the boundary of the domain it is proved that the spectrum of the first boundary-value problem for an elliptic operator of second order always lies in the half-plane Re , where is the leading eigenvalue to which there corresponds a nonnegative eigenfunction. We study the regularity of the minimizer u for the functional F (u,f)=|u|2 + |u–f{2 over all maps uH 1(, S 2). We prove that for some suitable functions f every minimizer u is smooth in if 0 and for the same functions f, u has singularities when is large enough.

We study the nonlinear eigenvalue problem F(x,) = L()x +R(x,) = 0 where F : X × R X with X a Hilbert space. IfL() is a polynomial in , then it is shown that 0> 0 is a global bifurcation point of the eigenvalue problem provided astandard transversality condition is satisfied, the dimension of the nullspace of L(0) is an odd number and L() is composed of asequence of positive operators on the finite dimensional null space ofL(0).  相似文献

In many problems the local zero-pole structure (i.e. locations of zeros and poles together with their orders) of a scalar rational functionw is a key piece of structure. Knowledge of the order of the pole or zero of the rational functionw at the point is equivalent to knowledge of the -module (where is the space of rational functions analytic at ). For the more intricate case of a rationalp×m matrix functionW, we consider the structure of the module as the appropriate analogue of zero-pole structure (location of zeros and poles together with directional information), where is the set of column vectors of heightm with entries equal to rational functions which are analytic at . Modules of the form in turn can be explicitly parametrized in terms of a collection of matrices (C ,A ,B ,B , ) together with a certain row-reduced(p–m)×m matrix polynomialP(z) (which is independent of ) which satisfy certain normalization and consistency conditions. We therefore define the collection (C ,A ,Z ,B , ,P(z)) to be the local spectral data set of the rational matrix functionW at . We discuss the direct problem of how to compute the local spectral data explicitly from a realizationW(z)=D+C(z–A) –1 B forW and solve the inverse problem of classifying which collections (C ,A ,Z ,B , ,P(z)) satisfying the local consistency and normalization conditions arise as the local spectral data sets of some rational matrix functionW. Zusammenfassung Das Stabilitätsverhalten der Strömung einer zähen Flüssigkeit im Ringraum zwischen zwei unendlich langen koaxialen Zylindern wurde theoretisch untersucht; der innere Zylinder rotiert mit konstanter Winkelgeschwindigkeit, während der äussere in axialer Richtung schwingt. Die nichtlineare Analysis zu diesem Problem zeigt, daß diese Strömung stabil ist, wenn Frequenz und Amplitude der Schwingung einem gewissen BereichD der Frequenz-Amplituden-Ebene angehören.D hängt von der Reynoldszahl ab, die hier wie üblicherweise bei der Couette-Strömung definiert ist. Ist cr die kritische Reynoldszahl der stationären Couette-Strömung, so zeigt die Untersuchung, daß das angegebene StabilitätsgebietD zur Achse verschwindender Ampltidue zusammenschrumpft, wenn gegen cr strebt.D ist leer für> cr .
Summary The stability of the flow of a viscous fluid in the ringspace between two infinitely long coaxial cylinders is investigated; the inner cylinder is assumed to be rotating with a constant angular velocity while the outer one is oscillating in the axial direction. A nonlinear analysis shows that this flow is stable if the frequency and the amplitude of the oscillation are taken from a domainD of the frequency-amplitudeplane.D depends on the Reynolds number defined as usual in the case of Couette flow. When tends to cr the critical Reynolds number of the steady Couette flow,D is shown to shrink to the axis of vanishing amplitude.D is empty for> cr .

Summary For a non-linear boundary value problem with a positive and increasing non-linearity there exists a critical value* of the parameter, beyond which there are no solutions. We give a minimax characterization of*.

In dieser Arbeit wird* durch ein Minimaxprinzip charakterisiert. Der Beweis beruht auf der Anwendung von Ober- und Unterlösungen und monotonen Iterationen.

We characterize the relationship between the space L1() and the dual L1() of the space L1(), where (, ) is a dual pair of vector measures with associated spaces of integrable functions L1() and L1() respectively. Since the result is rather restrictive, we introduce the notion of range duality in order to obtain factorizations of operators from Banach function spaces that are dominated by the integration map associated to the vector measure . The basic necessary condition for the existence of a TD(5, ; v)-TD(5, ; u), namely v 4u, is shown to be sufficient for any 1, except when (v, u) = (6, 1) and = 1, and possibly when (v, u) = (10, 1) or (52, 6) and = 1. For the case = 1, 86 new incomplete transversal designs are constructed. Conditions are obtained under which the spectrum of the operator B(t) in the gap (, ) is either discrete, or does not accumulate to the right-hand boundary of the spectral gap, or is finite. We introduce a one dimensional contact process for which births to the right of the rightmost particle and to the left of the leftmost particle occur at rate e (where e is for external). Other births occur at rate i (where i is for internal). Deaths occur at rate 1. The case e= i is the well known basic contact process for which there is a critical value c>1 such that if the birth rate is larger than c the process has a positive probability of surviving. Our main motivation here is to understand the relative importance of the external birth rates. We show that if e1 then the process always dies out while if e>1 and if i is large enough then the process may survive. We also show that if i< c the process dies out for all e. To extend this notion to d>1 we introduce a second process that has an epidemiological interpretation. For this process each site can be in one of three states: infected, a susceptible that has never been infected, or a susceptible that has been infected previously. Furthermore, the rates at which the two types of susceptible become infected are different. We obtain some information about the phase diagram about this case as well.  相似文献

It is a classical problem to determine explicit algebraic conditions on the i so that F may have roots with multiplicities 1,...,r.
