A unital -algebra is said to have the (APD)-property if every nonzero element in has the approximate polar decomposition. Let be a closed ideal of . Suppose that and have (APD). In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that makes have (APD). Furthermore, we show that if and or is a simple purely infinite -algebra, then has (APD).

Let be an -dimensional space of linear operators between the linear spaces and over an algebraically closed field . Improving results of Larson, Ding, and Li and Pan we show the following.

Theorem. Let be a basis of . Assume that every nonzero operator in has rank larger than . Then a linear operator belongs to if and only if for every , is a linear combination of .

It is shown that for an approximate algebra homomorphism on a Banach -algebra , there exists a unique algebra -homomorphism near the approximate algebra homomorphism. This is applied to show that for an approximate automorphism on a unital -algebra , there exists a unique automorphism near the approximate automorphism. In fact, we show that the approximate automorphism is an automorphism.

Let be a -algebra acting on a Hilbert space , let be a linear mapping and let be a -derivation. Generalizing the celebrated theorem of Sakai, we prove that if is a continuous -mapping, then is automatically continuous. In addition, we show the converse is true in the sense that if is a continuous --derivation, then there exists a continuous linear mapping such that is a --derivation. The continuity of the so-called - -derivations is also discussed.

Let be a unital, simple, separable -algebra with real rank zero, stable rank one, and weakly unperforated ordered group. Suppose, also, that can be locally approximated by type I algebras with Hausdorff spectrum and bounded irreducible representations (the bound being dependent on the local approximating algebra). Then is tracially approximately finite dimensional (i.e., has tracial rank zero).

Hence, is an -algebra with bounded dimension growth and is determined by -theoretic invariants.

The above result also gives the first proof for the locally case.

A family of commuting bounded operators on a Hilbert space is said to be a spherical isometry if in the weak operator topology. We show that every commuting family of spherical isometries is jointly subnormal, which means that it has a commuting normal extension on some Hilbert space Suppose now that the normal extension is minimal. Then we show that every bounded operator in the commutant of has a unique norm preserving extension to an operator in the commutant of Moreover, if is the commutator ideal in then is *-isomorphic to We also show that the commutant of the minimal normal extension is completely isometric, via the compression mapping, to the space of Toeplitz-type operators associated to We apply these results to construct exact sequences for Toeplitz algebras on generalized Hardy spaces associated to strictly pseudoconvex domains.

Given the disk algebra and an automorphism , there is associated a non-self-adjoint operator algebra called the semicrossed product of with . Buske and Peters showed that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the contractive Hilbert modules over and pairs of contractions and on satisfying . In this paper, we show that the orthogonally projective and Shilov Hilbert modules over correspond to pairs of isometries on satisfying . Let be the Banach algebra of all bounded analytic functions in the unit disk . A function is said to be universal with respect to the sequence of noneuclidian translates, if the set is locally uniformly dense in the set of all holomorphic functions bounded by . We show that for any sequence of points in tending to the boundary there exists a closed subspace of , topologically generated by Blaschke products, and linear isometric to , such that all of its elements are universal with respect to noneuclidian translates. The proof is based on certain interpolation problems in the corona of . Results on cyclicity of composition operators in are deduced.

A -semigroup on a Banach space is called hypercyclic if there exists an element such that is dense in . is called chaotic if is hypercyclic and the set of its periodic vectors is dense in as well. We show that a spectral condition introduced by Desch, Schappacher and Webb requiring many eigenvectors of the generator which depend analytically on the eigenvalues not only implies the chaoticity of the semigroup but the chaoticity of every . Furthermore, we show that semigroups whose generators have compact resolvent are never chaotic. In a second part we prove the existence of hypercyclic vectors in for a hypercyclic semigroup , where is its generator.

Examples of such arrangements are hyperplane arrangements and toral arrangements, i.e., collections of codimension 1 subtori, in an algebraic torus. Specker proved that the group of integer-valued sequences is far from free; all its homomorphisms to factor through finite subproducts. Nöbeling proved that the subgroup consisting of the bounded sequences is free and therefore has many homomorphisms to . We prove that all ``reasonable' homomorphisms factor through finite subproducts. Among the reasonable homomorphisms are all those that are Borel with respect to a natural topology on . In the absence of the axiom of choice, it is consistent that all homomorphisms are reasonable and therefore that Specker's theorem applies to as well as to .
