Representations of Central Matrix-Valued Carathéodory Functions in Both Nondegenerate and Degenerate Cases

We derive left and right quotient representations for central q × q matrix-valued Carathéodory functions. Moreover, we obtain recurrent formulas for the matrix polynomials involved in the quotient representations. These formulas are the starting point for getting recurrent formulas for those matrix polynomials which occur in the Arov-Krein resolvent matrix for the nondegenerate matricial Carathéodory problem.     

Inequalities for solutions of singular initial problems for Carathéodory systems via Ważewski’s principle

In this paper we give sufficient conditions for solvability of a singular initial problem formulated for Carathéodory systems of ordinary differential equations. The existence of solutions is proved by the supposition that corresponding auxiliary lower and upper singular problems have solutions. The proof technique uses a notion of a regular polyfacial subset which is developed for Carathéodory systems of ordinary differential equations and a modification of the topological method for such systems given by Palamides, Sficas and Staikos. An application concerning the existence of positive solutions for a special class of singular problems is given as well.     

Isolated periodic minima are unstable

A classical result, studied, among others, by Carathéodory [C. Carathéodory, Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations of the First Order, Chelsea, New York, 1989], says that, at least generically, periodic minimizers are hyperbolic, and consequently, unstable as solutions of the associated Euler–Lagrange equation. A new version of this fact, also valid in the nonhyperbolic case, is given.     

On rank invariance of generalized Schwarz-Pick-Potapov block matrices of matrix-valued Carathéodory functions

In view of a multiple Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem, we study the rank of generalized Schwarz-Pick-Potapov block matrices of matrix-valued Carathéodory functions. Those matrices are determined by the values of a Carathéodory function and the values of its derivatives up to a certain order. We derive statements on rank invariance of such generalized Schwarz-Pick-Potapov block matrices. These results are applied to describe the case of exactly one solution for the finite multiple Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem and to discuss matrix-valued Carathéodory functions with the highest degree of degeneracy.     

Estimates of the Carathéodory metric on the symmetrized polydisc

Estimates for the Carathéodory metric on the symmetrized polydisc are obtained. It is also shown that the Carathéodory and Kobayashi distances of the symmetrized three-disc do not coincide.     

On 4-flattening theorems and the curves of Carathéodory, Barner and Segre

We discuss three classes of closed curves in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ which have non-vanishing curvature and at least 4 flattenings (points at which the torsion vanishes). Calling these classes (de.ned below) Barner, Segre and Carathéodory, we prove that Barner $\subset$ (Segre $\cap$ Carathéodory). We also prove that (Segre)\ (Segre $\cap$ Carathéodory) and (Carathéodory)\(Segre $\cap$ Carathéodory) are open sets in the space of closed smooth curves with the C-topology. Finally, we define a class of closed curves containing the class of Segre curves and -based on contact topology considerations, as the Huygens principle- we establish the conjecture that any curve of our class has at least 4 flattenings.     

Effective formulas for the Carathéodory distance

For a class of Reinhardt domains we give formulas for the Carathéodory distance. As an application we discuss the product property of the Carathéodory distance when one factor domain is a Reinhardt domain of special type.     

Positive Carathéodory interpolation on the polydisc

The positive Carathéodory interpolation problem in the Agler-Herglotz class on the polydisc is solved, along with a several variable version of the Naimark dilation theorem. In addition, the positive Carathéodory interpolation problem for general holomorphic functions is discussed and numerical results are presented.     

Existence theorems for hyperbolic differential inclusions in Banach algebras

In this paper, an existence theorem for a certain hyperbolic differential inclusions in Banach algebras is proved under the mixed Lipschitz and Carathéodory conditions. The existence of extremal solutions for Carathéodory as well as discontinuous hyperbolic differential inclusions is also proved under certain monotonicity conditions.     

Carathéodory interpolation on the non-commutative polydisk

The Carathéodory problem in the N-variable non-commutative Herglotz-Agler class and the Carathéodory-Fejér problem in the N-variable non-commutative Schur-Agler class are posed. It is shown that the Carathéodory (resp., Carathéodory-Fejér) problem has a solution if and only if the non-commutative polynomial with given operator coefficients (the data of the problem indexed by an admissible set Λ) takes operator values with positive semidefinite real part (resp., contractive operator values) on N-tuples of Λ-jointly nilpotent contractive n×n matrices, for all n∈N.     

Carathéodory's method for a class of second order differential equations on the half-line

The method of equivalent variational methods, originally due to Carathéodory for free problems in the calculus of variations is extended to investigate boundary value problems for a class of second order differential equations on the half-line. Some applications are presented to illustrate the potential of this method.     

A random Euler scheme for Carathéodory differential equations

We study a random Euler scheme for the approximation of Carathéodory differential equations and give a precise error analysis. In particular, we show that under weak assumptions, this approximation scheme obtains the same rate of convergence as the classical Monte–Carlo method for integration problems.     

On the sequences of the Weyl semi-radii associated with matricial Carathéodory and Schur sequences in both nondegenerate and degenerate cases

In this paper we discuss Weyl matrix balls in the context of the matricial versions of the classical interpolation problems named after Carathéodory and Schur. Our particular focus will be on studying the monotonicity of suitably normalized semi-radii of the corresponding Weyl matrix balls. We, furthermore, devote a fair bit of attention to characterizing the case in which equality holds for particular matricial inequalities. Solving these problems will provide us with a new perspective on the role of the central functions for the classes of Carathéodory and Schur.     

Structure and the coefficients of certain classes of regular functions

In this paper, the well-known results of Carathéodory, Toeplitz, F. Riesz, Herglotz, containing the characterization of the Carathéodory class with the aid of the Stieltjes integral and with the aid of nonnegative quadratic forms (conditions on the coefficients), are extended to certain other classes of functions, regular in a circle or in an annulus.Translated from Zapiski Nauchnykh Seminarov Leningradskogo Otdeleniya Matematicheskogo Instituta im. Caratheodory interpolation kernels

Kernels over the unit disk for which a version of Carathéodory interpolation is true are characterized in a simple computationally verifiable manner.     

On differential equations for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle

In this paper we characterize sequences of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle whose corresponding Carathéodory function satisfies a Riccati differential equation with polynomial coefficients, in terms of second order matrix differential equations. In the semi-classical case, a characterization in terms of second order linear differential equations with polynomial coefficients is deduced.     

On a Multivalued Version of the Sharkovskii Theorem and its Application to Differential Inclusions

Motivated by the applications to differential equations without uniqueness conditions, we separately prove multivalued versions of the celebrated Sharkovskii and Li–Yorke theorems. These are then applied, via multivalued Poincaré operators, to Carathéodory differential inclusions. Thus, besides another, infinitely many subharmonics of all integer orders can be obtained. Unlike in the single-valued case, for example, period three brings serious obstructions. Three counter-examples, related to these complications, are therefore presented as well. In a multivalued setting, new phenomena are so exhibited.

One dimensional φ-Laplacian functional equations

In this paper we study functional φ-Laplacian equations with functional boundary conditions. The non-linearity belongs to a class of completely continuous operators, which includes Carathéodory ones, while the functional boundary conditions are given by compactly-fixed operators. We extend, in particular, a solvability result of C. Bereanu and J. Mawhin.
